So. Lapid au. I noticed that the two materia slots on the buster are filled by two very specifically colored stones. Would those perhaps be what remains of the buster's two previous wielders?

So someone did notice! Yes, those very familiar gems are indeed the previous wielders of the Buster Sword!

When Angeal died, he requested Zack place his gem in the Buster Sword. As for Zack’s, I’m still torn on Zack doing in in his final moments or Cloud doing it and forgetting.

While Zack and Angeal aren’t really conscious, they do give the sword abilities - I imagine for Angeal it’s something to do with his wing, probably a move that’s more defensive, while for Zack it’s a more offense move surging forward.

After the whole Sephiroth Ordeal, instead of leaving the Buster in the wastes, Cloud actually gives it to Reeve to look after and hopefully find a way to revive Zack (oh and whoever that second gem is I guess). Of course, easier said than done, and even if they manage to do that, who’s to say Zack will be the one revived, and not the original gem herself?
