Hotmail service was founded by Sabeer Bhatia and Jack Smith, and was one of the first webmail services on the Internet along with Four11's RocketMail (later Yahoo! Mail). It was commercially launched on July 4, 1996, symbolizing "freedom" from ISP-based email and the ability to access a user's inbox from anywhere in the world. The name "Hotmail" was chosen out of many possibilities ending in "-mail" as it included the letters HTML, the markup language used to create web pages (to emphasize this, the original type casing was "HoTMaiL"). The limit for free storage was 2 MB. Hotmail was initially backed by venture capital firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson. By December 1997, it reported more than 8.5 million subscribers. Hotmail initially ran under Solaris for mail services and Apache on FreeBSD for web services, before being partly converted to Microsoft products, using Windows Services for UNIX in the migration path.
Hotmail was sold to Microsoft in December 1997 for a reported $400 million (~$705 million in 2023), and it joined the MSN group of services. The sale had been preceded by a major incident in 1997 where all email was lost for 25% of mailboxes. Hotmail quickly gained in popularity as it was localized for different markets around the globe, and became the world's largest webmail service with more than 30 million active members reported by February 1999.
Hotmail originally ran on a mixture of FreeBSD and Solaris operating systems. A project was started to move Hotmail to Windows 2000. In June 2001, Microsoft claimed this had been completed; a few days later they retracted the statement and admitted that the DNS functions of the Hotmail system were still reliant on FreeBSD. In 2002 Hotmail still ran its infrastructure on UNIX servers, with only the front-end converted to Windows 2000. Later development saw the service tied with Microsoft's web authentication scheme, Microsoft Passport (now Microsoft account), and integration with Microsoft's instant messaging and social networking programs, MSN Messenger and MSN Spaces (later Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live Spaces, respectively).

friendship ended with VS Code. holy shit, friendship majorly ended with VS Code. I regret ever saying it was a decent text editor.
I was stuck on windows during a meeting I didn't have to be a part of and had a huge data migration looming over my head so I wrote a shell script in VS Code to transfer the files, SCP'd it over to my RedHat machine, and got it started. I don't know where things went wrong, but somewhere between saving it in VS Code and transferring it to my Linux box the formatting got fucked, and so twenty minutes after deploying my script I checked the progress and it appended spaces onto the end of alllllll of my copied directories.
My unscheduled downtime of my (luckily backup) production server was prolonged an extra half hour as I manually CP'd the files by hand, and tomorrow I'm going to have to do so much cleanup.
luckily my server is back up and my new environment doesn't have to go live until EOD tomorrow, but hooooly fuck, next time I'm just going to ssh into my Ubuntu box and use Nano (fuck vi and emacs)

my plex server was down all day so i couldn't access my audiobooks while at work. got home and remoted in only to discover it updated itself to windows 11 without any input from me. i really need to migrate this thing to linux

So I finally got around to updating the version of Ubuntu running on my server from 23.03 to 24.01, but being the tremendous moron I am, I forgot to save all of my Plex configuration files to migrate to this fresh installation. Now I have to wait for Plex to rescan everything and then I have to recreate all of my custom collections, download custom poster art for those collections, and manually retag the metadata for a whole bunch of things that the Plex media agent tagged wrongly (including 356 Looney Tunes shorts from the Looney Tunes Golden Collection DVD which is...ugh that's going to take a while). I also had to send new confirmation e-mails to a whole bunch of people because I removed the old server from my account before authorizing them to access the new one, which also whoopsie crumbles.
On the plus side, I did finally get around to doing this, it had been on my list for months, and there's also enough space after repartitioning the boot drive (I had kept the Windows 11 partition intact in case I needed it, but turns out I didn't) that I've got room to enable preview thumbnails.

To hell with Windows, hello Linux!
(Long, long 2 AM rant) I got an Alienware Area-51 Threadripper R6 from FB Marketplace last year. No, it's not my main machine, and don't hate me for it.
It was cheap, and it's nostalgic. I remember watching a bunch of tech videos growing up and this was one of my favorite computers. Did I understand any of the tech garble? No. But I thought it looked freakin' cool. So I saw it online and said why not. It'll make a good birthday present for myself, plus I can use it as a testbed of sorts for whatever computer projects I can think of.
It's treated me well despite my abuse. I've stress-tested it, done some rendering, ran some language models, and dabbled in crypto mining. One of the GPU's failed but i wasn't too surprised.
Throughout all of this, however, I've had three occasions where Windows decided to remove itself from the living realm. The first time I assume it was a driver error. I unplugged a device and it fully froze. After a restart, it would no longer boot. I'm not too worried since, it being a testbed, I don't have important stuff on it. So I reinstall Windows and move on. (Should I have had to do that in the first place, I don't think so.) The second time, it died after an update. A standard Windows update. Can't remember what exactly. But it stopped booting after the restart. This time, however, it appeared to also brick the firmware? Plugged in my installation media, turned on the computer, and I'm greeted with an empty drive list. It couldn't see the drives in my PC. Wack. Spent a few hours troubleshooting that one.
(I'm writing this at 2 AM, about to pass out, can't remember much details lol)
It's been smooth sailing for about four months. I'm having a blast, gaming, surfing, the like. I've started hosting a Minecraft server for my friends for the past two weeks. PC has been on for most of that time, with a few restarts to freshen up the system. Fast forward to yesterday (technically two days ago since it's past midnight). I do another restart, and before starting the server again I decide to check for any updated. Two pop up, I decide to let them install. Windows stopped booting. This time I'm stressed, since I'm hosting our server. I migrated it from Aternos so people can join whenever they want, so it has a months worth of progress on it.
I make an installation media (on a Macbook mind you, don't get me started on that process), and attempt to recover the windows install before I reset it. I spent four hours figuring it out on Tuesday, and couldn't even make it to the Setup screen. I gave up, hit the hay. Wednesday I got right back to it, going as far as to re-installing the BIOS. After that and some more, I finally get to the Setup screen, where I'm met with a new message: "Install driver to show hardware".
"awesome, a new challenge" the he sais to his self *he was then shot 74 times* I saw that message and knew this wasn't gonna end well. Luckily I had an NVMe adapter on hand so I could pull the server files from my drive.
Six hours were spent, wasted, on troubleshooting this error. I've gone through forums on at least half a dozen websites. Nothing worked. All hope was lost for Windows.
Then, a little penguin appeared in my head. I had to try. I've had Linux in the past, only temporarily. It's never given me any problems besides running games with anti-cheat. That's mainly why I haven't switched fully before. But developers have improved Linux support for games, and now Steam has their own Linux-based OS. So I said, why not. I created my Ubuntu flash drive, plugged it in and booted my PC. First try. It worked. Of course it would, it's Linux. It doesn't care if you install it on a literal potato fresh out of the ground. It's now Thursday midnight past, and I'm finally downloading my apps and programs.
At this very moment, I made a decision. I will never use Windows again, unless for the rare circumstance I need to run a Windows-only program. In that case, I'd rather dual-boot my machine than have it Windows-only. I've never had a bad experience with Linux. Is it challenging? Yes. Is it as user-friendly? It can be, as long as you don't need to do anything significant. But I'm fine with that. I'm willing to learn, and I have fun doing so. I'll finally rid myself of Microsoft's greedy and selfish products. And yes, I got the Minecraft server running on Linux. Only took me 15 minutes, and even that's because I've never done it before. It's a five-minute process.

Some things computers should be able to Just Do but for some reason cannot:
Large file transfers Okay, this is kinda the big one. The 300mb file transfer on the network, if you will. Arguably it's the entire point of the Internet: a resilient communications network which allows transfer of large quantities of data over arbitrary media. And yet this is the one thing which computers persistently cannot do well, or at least not easily and natively without blood sacrifice and a credit card.
Print Getting a computer to print is one of the most frustrating things, and I do not know why. Especially inasmuch as the overwhelming majority of printouts are simply black&white text on a piece of standard office paper. This should be very straightforward and in fact so simple that most people never have to think about a printer driver, in the same way that you don't have to think about a monitor driver or a keyboard driver.
Actually shut down It should be possible to simply, without performing a dance, holding the button for precisely 23.52 seconds, or anything else, turn off your computer. This should not be a thing the device can block or prevent. There should be a button or switch - maybe with a safety cover to prevent accidents - to interrupt power. Even on a laptop. It should not go into sleep or hibernation mode. It should not be able to come back on. It should not be in a listening state. It should be physically impossible for anyone to use the device to listen in on you because there is no electricity going to the internals.
Gracefully wake up from sleep mode On the other hand, if a computer does go into any kind of hibernation or sleep mode, it should gracefully return to operational status. There should not be a risk of it being caught in a state where it's not off but you also cannot wake it up. This is my computer, not my spouse at 6am on a Monday. My computer does not need coffee, and will not be getting any. If it cannot reliably return from sleep mode, it's just off but wasting power.
Show me the thing I was just looking at Another big one. It's entirely possible, both online and off, for a computer to display faster than a user can process. "Wait, go back" should be an option. It should not ever be "Well, you scrolled past it, it's gone forever."
Easily search the files I have on my computer This one... used to be better? Right now at least WIndows really wants to read the content of files, so if I'm looking for my 2025 Dental bills, it tries to show me every file I have which includes "dental" and "2025" in the text of the file, and does not just show me the four files I actually named some variant of "2025Dentalblah". This should be easy, and it is not.
Locate duplicate files Maybe this one is just me, but... due to migrations and backups, sometimes I end up with several copies of the same files. It should be really easy to identify these files. I mean, there are checksums, okay? This is a thing a computer can do natively and very easily. Yet for some reason there's no simple way to do this, and even duplicate locator utilities are weird and don't work right.
Identify and display files File formats are not a new concept. It should be exceedingly rare to encounter a file format which a computer cannot readily identify and display. Not "And then run as a program" but simply "Oh, this is a quicktime file, I gotcha boss." For a computer today to encounter a file format it can't identify should be a Major Mystery and not an everyday occurrence.
Not allow evil background shit On the flip side, there's a lot of background activity which ipso facto should not be allowed. There's no reason for an application to be contacting a server every 500ms, there's no reason a data file format should have the ability to run a service. These should not be things at all. And these are the source of so many security holes which could simply be closed by not allowing arbitrary code execution.
Now, I know most of these have known solutions, but if those solutions are more than two steps, they're dumb. Because these should not be complicated at all. These should be simply and native and not require effort. These are not new problems, and should have been solved a while ago.

every now and again I start to think that maybe windows was right recommending a whole key/value database for system and application configuration but I just migrated my weechat config between servers by going `scp -r ~/.weechat awful.cloud:.weechat` and it worked with almost zero apparent issues and I'm like right they were wrong and are actively hurting their users.
I'm still convinced that the registry is part of why Windows gets really slow cold boot times even on modern hardware.
