The next part of With Warning | Open Heart | Tobias & Casey

Sienna turned away from the door, her cautious optimism morphing into absolute glee. Grabbing Tobias's arm, she pushed him toward Casey's room so they could have some privacy. Initially, Sienna had just as many doubts about the man as the others, maybe even more, but as the bearer of all things bright, she chose to take a positive approach to the dismay of many. Now that she believed she was being proven right, she couldn't be more delighted, for more reasons than one.

"You did it!" She beamed the second the door closed behind her. "You did it! We've been trying for days... it might even be a week... but in less than an hour... you did it! I am amazed, Dr. Carrick. I am amazed."

"Thank you, I guess, but I didn't do anything spectacular, I just..."

The man was brought to silence by a defiant wave of the tiny but mighty woman's hand. "I know you're not the humble type. So do me a favor and spare me the platitudes. She's only going to be in there ten minutes tops, and I need your help in here."

"In her bedroom?"

"Yes."

Biting her lips to stifle a giggle, Casey shifted in Tobias’s arms to face him, garnering curious stares from co-workers and patients alike. She didn’t know he managed to do it; the man could sneak up behind her, push her hair away from her neck, and kiss her so seamlessly that no one so much as noticed. But she’d just turn around to face him, and a dozen spectators were waiting to feed the gossip pipeline. Though it was already too late to deter that, she took a cautious step to the side.

“You need to stop doing that,” she blushed. “I thought you wanted to keep things under wraps at work.”

Tobias shrugged with a tantalizing smirk on his lips. “I don’t recall saying any such thing. So, ready for our big night? I’ll pick you up at six?”

The afternoon sun caught his aqua eyes, and though she never thought it possible, they were now even more enticing. Forgetting about anyone and anything other than him, she grinned. “Six it is.”

He closed the distance between them, the ever-present swagger in his gait. Casey felt her skin turn to gooseflesh as his hand brushed against hers so quickly no one could see but one look at her face, and he knew his goal had been attained.

“I’m counting the minutes,” he muttered. Pointedly meeting the eyes of each gawker as he marched away.

Casey thought she was in the clear now that he was gone, but she could feel the weight of Jackie’s stare.

“Yes,” she said, eyes fixed on her work to avoid her friend’s judgemental gaze.

“What’s going on with you two.”

“What? What do you mean?”

A Moment In Time | Crimes of Passion | Trystan x Carolina - Final Chapter

Carolina's face turned to stone; an anger usually reserved for criminals she was slapping handcuffs on set in her eyes.

"I can't believe you're defending this!" She spat, quickly walking away, but Ruby was fast at her heels.

"I'm not defending it, Carolina. I'm just saying you're being incredibly unreasonable. You owe him at least..."

"Owe him?" she laughed, though she found nothing amusing at all. I don't owe anyone anything. Especially Trystan. This isn't how it works, Ruby. This isn't how it works at all!"

"Then how exactly should it work? Because from where I stand, he's doing all that he can. Right now, the onus is on you...and I'm not afraid to tell you so."

Carolina had been walking frantically, rushing toward the park's gate as if the crowd on the bustling city street would swallow her whole and provide her with the escape hatch she was desperately seeking. But her friend's words... her brutally honest words... stopped her in her tracks.

"Jesus, Ruby," she whispered, pounding a fist against her thigh. "Jesus, Jesus, Jesus! I hate it when you're right!"

A delightful glint came to Ruby's eyes, but for her friend's sake, she held back her smile. "Then you must be disappointed quite often."

Now I am copying Lily and using this as an excuse to see other WIPs! Aegon’s hand was cold and clammy against Trystane’s own as they wove through the sea of bodies. The packed streets surrounded them at all sides; the heat of mummers and dancers and whores wearing nothing but slips of silk, all flesh, hot, suffocating. Even the Kingsguard could not keep them away — if they were even trying. They wore no armor, and Aegon no crown, but the smallfolk recognized royalty when they saw it. Some bowed their heads, others dropped to their knees; there were shouts of praise, of loyalty, of usurpation and treachery — King Aegon paid them no mind. Whether he was drunk or did not care, Trystane couldn’t be sure. All he could be sure of was his touch, the soft fingers harshly interlocked with his own, pulling him up the street faster than he could follow. An uneven lip of brick caught his cane. The warm torchlit streets blurred as he fell backwards into a firm chest. He heard a shout of laughter in front of him, a curse at his back, and felt his hand slip out of Aegon’s — then Ser Leon Estermont was hissing and shoving him forward, right back into the king. Aegon only laughed more, threw an arm around Trystane’s bony shoulders, and pulled him close. “Having trouble keeping up, good-brother? Don’t fret. We’re almost there.” His breath already stunk of wine. They hadn’t even found their first tavern. “I told you you should have left that thing behind.”

[Open Heart] *I've never written an interview style story before so this was interesting to explore with these three beautiful ladies.

💛 Of Leaves & Laughter: Mal and the boys are cleaning up around the orphanage when Mal has an idea to make things more interesting. [Blades—Orphanage Series] *The orphanage is my favorite so I always love writing that series but also I enjoyed seeing a little flashback to Mal's childhood

💛 Adventures with Threep: Three vignettes of Threep's life with Rayden, Mal, and Daenarya. [Blades] *I've wanted to write Pregnant!Threep since book one, so I was excited to finally tell this story, or at least the beginning of it hehe

Hiii, back again with another art to post! I’m totally aware that I still have WIP and my current mode is to create another and another again🥴. I remember someone posted in regards to royal dinner outfit was like a Christmas tree together with Trystan (although they're not currently present in the art). I’m laughing the thought of it🤣😭, so since its Christmas I thought this will be the perfect one to be shared hehe. A Merry Christmas Everyone💖. OK, my kid made me watch Tangled again, and why am I thinking a Trystan/Carolina Tangled AU would be soooo much fun. lol

I finished Apprentice to the Villain yesterday. I'm semi-obsessed with Evie and Trystan and felt the urge to start a little WIP for them. I have no clue if I'll ever finish it, but I'm tentatively optimistic.

Trystan doesn’t often invite his clients to his office. Removing blood stains from the expensive carpet is always a hassle. They tend to be rather stubborn. And unfortunately, his magic has proven to be rather unhelpful in this particular field of usage.

After all, death magic isn’t meant for cleaning purposes.

And while Trystan has an open-plan office full of underlings who are obliged to do his bidding, HR made it very clear that cleaning up his office is not part of their jobs. He checked their contracts, and to his dismay, he found that Rebecka – his HR manager – was, in fact, correct. Crime scene cleanup is indeed limited to the designated areas: The dungeon with its numerous cells and the torture chambers. The entrance hall where he hangs his clients’ heads. Even the courtyard, in case he feels like tossing an intern out of the window again. But not his office.

Trystan may or may not have sulked about this for an hour … or four.

WIP Intro: Plastic Fangs

Paranormal Literary Fiction / Drafting / Playlist / Pinterest

I finished writing the original “Plastic Fangs” short story early this year. I think in the wrap-up post I wrote about it that I said Marcellus and Abel are two of my favorite characters I’ve written for as of late, and I still completely agree with that. Specifically with Marcellus. He’s just a strange little guy who loves stealing diaries, eavesdropping on conversations, and watching “talkies” (because he was a kid when silent movies were still a thing). I definitely gave him my “weird little man” syndrome. 

My beta readers (Shini-san and my husband Trystan) both loved Marcellus as a character and lamented that the story was, well, a short story. Both straight-up told me that they would love if “Plastic Fangs” were novelized.

So here we are. Novelizing “Plastic Fangs” in time for spooky season!

WHAT

Plastic Fangs follows Marcellus, a sixty-something vampire living his best life in the eighties. Despite technically being a fledgling himself, he meets the fledgling vampire Abel and takes him beneath his wing to show him the ways of vampirism. 

While simple to boil down to an elevator pitch, I think what really shines here are the characters. I already mentioned that Marcellus is a little freak, but Abel matches his freak pretty well. Abel hasn’t had enough time to develop interests as deep or varied as normal as other vampires, considering he’s in his early twenties. Despite that, he’s still a deeply strange person.

The plan is to begin with a first chapter similar to the original short story, then build on from there. Marcellus and Abel go on a gay vampire road trip from state to state as Marcellus teaches Abel how to live as a creature of the night.

I’m expecting a lot of references to other vampire media. Dracula and Interview with the Vampire, because Marcellus loves vampire media and consumes it regularly. And of course, references to some of my favorite vampire stuff: My Chemical Romance, My Babysitter’s a Vampire, my own vampire work Night Bite, What We Do in the Shadows. That sort of vibe. I love vampires, so it’ll be easy for me to make silly references to them. 

THEMES

Plastic Fangs, like most other works of vampire fiction, has a large focus on themes of otherness, immortality, and yearning. So much yearning. 

CHARACTERS

Marcellus

There isn’t much to say about Marcellus that I haven’t already said. If he were human, he would be in his mid-sixties. He’s a young enough vampire that he’s still technically a fledgling. (Vampires are considered fledglings until they reach a hundred years of vampirism.) 

Marcellus is passionate about “following the rules” as he was taught. There’s a certain etiquette to vampirism and feeding that Marcellus thinks is respectful. He’s determined to teach Abel these rules.

In the first draft of the short story, Marcellus was your typical broody vampire. He had a lot of angst about his transformation. However, I found it a lot more compelling if Marcellus enjoyed vampirism and had a funky fresh time with it. So Marcellus became the eccentric little freak he is now. 

Plastic Fangs (the novel) expands on Marcellus’ short story characterization. He’s just as delighted by the modern world (waxing poetic on how much he loves disco balls), just as nosy (frequent eavesdropping on people in motel rooms, “glass on the wall” style), and just as happy to be alive as he is in the short story; he just gets more time to enjoy it.

Abel

Abel is a fledgling vampire. He’s been a vampire for less than two years. The person who turned him did it on a whim and abandoned him. Until he met Marcellus, he hadn’t established a solid relationship with another vampire. He didn’t get to learn from a vampiric master like Marcellus did. He’s making up for lost time now.

I think Abel is just as fun of a character as Marcellus is. We aren’t as close to him, since Plastic Fangs is told from Marcellus’ point of view, but we do get to see a lot of Abel’s character in it. Abel fully enjoys indulging in nightlife. He does some fun things with makeup, in eighties punk fashion, and is wearing these obnoxiously long fake nails when we first meet him. 

Abel is a lot angstier about vampirism than Marcellus. He hasn’t had a lot of time to process his vampirism, and he didn’t get to choose it like Marcellus did. It’s pretty difficult for him. Abel is also a lot closer to everything that happened to him during his human life, so he has a lot more feelings to work through. 

THEATRE TROUPE

Marcellus’s introduction to vampirism was a theatre troupe that rolled through Provincetown. He went to see them perform for the first time and was so smitten he spent all his money returning every night. They welcomed him happily. It wasn’t until he’d been with them for a couple months when the members revealed that they were vampires.

The theatre troupe are often mentioned, but we don’t get to meet them face to face until we’re about halfway through the book. The troupe is composed of a rotating cast of characters. When we meet them, the group consists of: Julius (he/him), Cleopatra (she/her), Smythe (she/her), Mary (they/them), Calliope (she/they), and Ptolemy (it/its). We get mentions of other members offhandedly.

These vampires are all considered “elders” in the context of the story, though they are nowhere near considered elders in the counsels. The only ones who would be considered actual elders in the vampiric community are Ptolemy and Cleopatra, and even then, they don’t really follow the “old ways”. 

Julius

Julius is Marcellus’ former master/mentor. He isn’t an elder vampire by any means, but he’s old enough to have experienced the barbaric “old ways” of vampirism, and stands firmly against them. Julius is overdramatic, enthusiastic, and exactly Marcellus’ type. 

He doesn’t often create spawn, having only three (Marcellus included). Julius is close with all of his spawns, calling and sending mail. He has high standards for vampirism that he’s passed onto Marcellus. 

Their relationship is really sweet, honestly. I love how much they care about each other. From Marcellus’ perspective, Julius is his first love. Julius has great respect for how much Marcellus cares about other people and that Marcellus adopted his teachings. Meeting Abel thrills Julius; he’s overjoyed that one of his spawn is willing to take in a fledgling that isn’t theirs.

EXCERPT

“You don’t seem particularly sociable.” Abel weaves around a tree, glances back playfully. In the darkness, he looks more like a vampire than Marcellus. His long nails and contact lenses aren’t noticeable once the branches above block out the cloud-darkened sky. The swish of his hair and his cape speaks more to vampirism. He doesn’t seem to have problems speaking around the ridiculous plastic fangs.

“Jacaerys and Lucerys,” he affirmed. His voice never rose above a whisper, distant and crackly like the ancient oak in the godswood. “I wish they were dead.” A dreadful taste thickened in Alicent’s throat, dripping low into her belly and settling there like a pit. This was not her doing, surely? She spoke ill of Rhaenyra’s sons often, perhaps more than she ought to in front of Larys’ boy, but such a young, tempered spirit couldn’t have conjured up an idea like that himself… She placed a firm hand on Trystane’s shoulder, steadying herself, and pulled him to face her. He swayed with the force of her touch, but did not fight. “You cannot say such things, sweet boy.” Her words were a murmur, yet sharper than she liked. It was necessary, Alicent told herself; he couldn’t go around speaking about these sorts of things without any sense of caution. “Jace and Luke are…” “Harwin is supposed to be my kin,” Trystane interupted. “He’s supposed to care about me when my father doesn’t. Right?” Alicent took a deep, measured breath. Mother, guide me. “It’s an unkind thing to say.” Luke squealed something in an excited tone, teasing; Aemond bit back with the swish of his wooden sword and a maligned insult. The beds of Alicent’s fingernails itched viciously. “Promise me you won’t say it again.” “Is it?” Trystane tilted his head. His eyes were wide, irises as depthless and blue as the Blackwater itself. “They’re going to die, anyways. They stink of it. Blood and sea salt and cinder. If they got it over with, I could have Uncle Harwin, and mayhaps grandfather would—”
