💪🏼 MUSCLE MEMORY 💪🏼 One topic of conversation that seems to be coming up a lot with my 1-2-1 clients at the moment is muscle memory • Unsurprisingly most of them were a little worried about loss of muscle mass and strength after several periods of the gyms being closed over the last 18-months, but they've all been surprised with just how well their bodies have re-adapted to life in the gym. So why have they been able to get back into their old routines and start making progress again so quickly? Well aside from hard-work and dedication, it's thanks (in part) to muscle memory. When we stop working out, for whatever reason, our muscles will go into an atrophy (muscle loss) state • This is simply because we stop sending the signals to our muscles to build them and the nuclei/cells begin to shrink. But the good news is that muscle memory means that it won’t take nearly as long to rebuild the muscle mass you may have lost, because while the number of nuclei/cells may have decreased and shrunk they will not have completely vanished • So when we get back to training, muscle memory kicks in and our muscles are prepared & ready respond to the demand placed on them. So, if your worried about taking a week off the gym this Summer; don't • It takes around 2-weeks of complete inactivity before you will start to see any degradation in fitness levels (reduction in VO2 max and blood enzymes), but around 4-6 weeks before muscle mass will start to disappear ... and even if you have to take longer away from the gym for any reason you'll be surprised at how quickly you see that size come back.
