unpopular opinion but I don't think Sebastian should be seen as a bad guy for being coerced into casting the cruciatus curse.

idk man, some fics portray it as a more neutral 'shit happens' situation, while other fics portray it as a 'how could sebastian do such a malicious act?' situation and I'm just...

also, the cruciatus curse cast by sebastian/MC doesn't seem to be that bad

firstly, all three of the gang walked into the situation blind, not having any hint of knowledge beforehand that casting the curse would be required. There was no premeditation.

all three of them chose to search for the scriptorium. Ignoring gameplay quest progression, MC made the choice to attempt to convince Ominis, Ominis made the choice to reveal info about the script, Sebastian made the choice to search for the script. Whatever culpability there is for being in that situation, it spreads equally on all three.

once they walked into that room, there were two choices: cast the curse or die. Sebastian had every right to believe there was no other way out. the entire time, he was smelling the decaying stench of an older, more experienced dead witch who had likely done everything she could to get out without casting the curse, to no results.

was the only moral option for all 3 of them to die? MC was the only one who could stop ranrok, so letting them die would have doomed the wizarding world. ominis was sebastian's best friend and sebastian clearly is the type to not want his loved ones to die. not only would anne's chance of a cure be gone with sebastian's death, she would have spent the rest of her isolated life not knowing what happened to her twin. she had given up on her own life, but the scraps of her hopes were placed on wanting sebastian to move on and live his life. to live the rest of her short life with the idea that her twin was dead but never truly knowing what happened would have broken her more than her curse ever did.

through anne, sebastian already had the experience of watching someone he loves slowly wither away. he would have done anything to not have his two friends die of starvation in a small, dark room next to a rotting body. anything, including experiencing the most unbearable pain himself, because...

sebastian was fully willing to be acted upon (have the curse cast on him) as he was willing to act (cast the curse). He was ready to have mc cast the cruciatus curse on him, he was likely ready to have ominis cast the curse on him. Sebastian, while not having personal experience with the curse, knew how deeply it affected people who were victimized by it and he was still willing to be a recipient to it. in his research, he's likely to have read up on many other accounts of the cruciatus and with that knowledge that under a cruel person's wand, the victim to be driven to madness, Sebastian gave MC the choice to cast it on him

someone was going to have to suffer in that room and he was not above considering himself fit for the role

Now, from both a game and a lore perspective, the cruciatus curse isn't actually that bad*. canonically, the pain of the curse has varying degrees of intensity. We know this because Harry Potter used the cruciatus curse twice and while he hurt his victims, he did not drive them to madness. I'm sure that the curse cast by sebastian/MC would have been painful, but considering that MC/sebastian was able to walk off the curse, it was an extremely weak version.

anyways, I think that since we all understand ominis was pressured (through torture) to use the cruciatus curse and was a victim to the situation, we should also realize that sebastian was also pressured (through death) to use the curse and he had to do the only available option in order to survive

How are LGBT characters treated in your HL fanfiction?

Ignoring the meta-explanation that HL devs added in LGBT characters in order to distance themselves from Rowling's transphobia, let’s start off Pride Month with celebrating an openly LGBT-inclusive game world. And then let’s consider the practical implications of that acceptance. (This tumblr post was made by a ravenclaw, if you didn't know.)

Mirabel Garlick, Professor for Herbology, mentions that she is only interested in finding a wife

Sirona Ryan, owner of The Three Broomsticks, says offhandedly that she used to appear as a different gender. In mythology, Sirona was a healing deity of belonging, which fits with the journey of transitioning.

Nora Treadwell, who introduces the Merlin trials, and Priya Treadwell, a potions vendor, explicitly refer to the other as their wife.

Albie Weekes, owner of Spintwitches Sporting Needs, was assumed by the Hogsmeade villagers to be out with a male suitor.

Two male ghosts at the Deathday Party dance together after seeing the romantic success of their friend.

The context of these specific interactions are key to understanding how the wizarding world as a whole views LGBT people.

In three instances we have an adult directly and casually telling a youth about their life with the same aplomb as a straight person talking about their wife/husband. Villagers gossip about Albie Weekes’s romantic life with no special consideration towards the gender of his speculated lover. Two men, the era of their death unknown, dance together without hesitation.

It’s clear that the wizarding world views the interactions of LGBT people as a normal part of everyday life. Not only that, but gay marriage is recognized.

From the average civilian up to structural political institutions, LGBT activity is embedded in wizarding culture.

How does this make sense when 1800s muggle England still criminalizes homosexuality? Because even the Harry Potter books clearly indicate that the religious cultural values of the wizarding world are very different from the muggle world.

(examples: usage of wizarding swears, celebration of christmas being entirely devoid of its religious story, Rowling explicitly stating she intentionally distanced the HP world from the church, etc)

Additionally, while wizarding and muggle culture often intersect, it is obvious that wizards have unique aspects of their culture that differ from muggles. (examples: wearing robes and pointed hats, wizarding literature, literal usage of magic over mechanical actions. etc)

So the wizarding world lacks major incentive for homophobia and is also capable of having different cultural values.

Wizards having a starkly different perception of gender and sex than muggles is not surprising, especially when it’s already established that, for nearly a thousand years, the wizarding world has already held a radically different view of gender equality than the muggle world.

The very basis of Hogwarts requires the wizarding world to not be nearly as restrictive against women as its muggle counterpart.

Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff were considered equals to their male colleagues in the creation of a co-ed boarding school in the 11th century. Even if attendance were restricted to wealthy families, the concept of girls and boys gaining an equal education is one of the most important steps towards gender equality. This was accomplished in the Middle Ages.

Additionally:

The Holyhead Harpies, all-female Quidditch team, are the second-oldest team in the league and play against male teams.

Wizarding Britain had its first female Minister in 1798, whereas muggle Britain’s first female minister was elected in 1979.

This is not an argument for there being absolutely no misogyny/sexism in the wizarding world. Rather, I give examples of how the wizarding world has had less prejudice than the muggle world in at least one aspect.

Just because the wizarding world is seen as ‘behind’ the muggle world in many areas, it cannot be said that they can never be ‘ahead’ of the muggle world in a few topics. (Also, culture is not a progression tree in Civilization.)

Considering how closely homophobia is linked with misogyny and extreme religion, which the wizarding world has a reduction of, it is reasonable for wizards to be accepting of LGBT people, and obviously that’s canon in Hogwarts Legacy.

Personally, the majority of wlw fics I've read haven't included bigotry. In one m/m/m fic, it was a topic on how the muggle world was not accepting towards the trans muggleborn character. I haven't read many ominis/sebastian fics, but Ao3 indicates they are the most likely to include the 'period-typical homophobia' tag. I've also seen straight fics that have minor homophobia/transphobia exhibited by the evil pureblood characters.

Since our perception of the 19th century is one of intense homophobia and misogyny, some stories will replicate that extreme inequality out of a desire to appear period-accurate or to provide drama and discuss those themes. That’s fair. I think that a story without homophobia also makes just as much sense.

Anyways, this is fanfiction and you can make your setting as homophobic as you want.

Used to have one of those semi-anonymous blogs where it’s filled with aesthetic photo compilations (light and dark academia, romanticising living in old cities, tea and coffee photoshoots despite not liking the drinks), but then she went ‘lets be mutuals, Ominis :)’ and realised…

So she panic nuked her blog and started over.

Now it’s full of studyblr, tagamemnon gossip over dead ancient roman poets, and love/romantic poems/excerpts.

went viral when she posted a class project video where she edited how to train your dragon but the dragon was replaced with her pet reptile a la "Jurassic Park but with a Cat" (OwlKitty)

When she starts to fancy Ominis, her reblogged love quotes start to focus more and more on his specific attributes

Since the texts she reblogs don’t have crass language or kinks, she thinks it’s entirely SFW. However, Ominis has learnt not to open her blog when he’s not alone or someone will ask him why he’s red in the face.

In a lot of Ominis x MC stories, it's revealed that Ominis fell in love with MC around the time of post-scriptorium.

How do you think that happens? Sometimes he hasn't spoken much to MC pre-scriptorium, so now he (understandably) starts caring for MC after seeing them in pain. Is part of it trauma bonding?

Does Ominis falling in love with MC hinge on them experiencing the scriptorium together? Is that what people like about the Ominis x MC romance: the 'one-sided enemies' to 'we now share the same trauma' to 'we share the same heart' pipeline?

idk I'm overthinking the progression of my fic since people are catching feelings for each other wayy before the scriptorium. And I'm worried readers will think it's too rushed or abnormal. (despite the 80k words of buildup) {{ (>_<) }}

I think it makes sense because they've been in close contact with each other for 3 months and in a small school you end up interacting with everyone, especially people in your House. And I'm literally showing each miniscule step they take towards each other.

What original lore have you written/planned for your fic? What part are you most excited to write/share with readers? 💛

Thank you so much for the ask! In my fic Shadow consumes the Sun, there are two fundamental aspects that diverge from HP canon, which then snowball into their own consequences:

The wizarding world started separating from the muggle world during the Renaissance and developed their own unique culture. This means, instead of being a ‘younger sibling always a few years behind’ the progress of the muggle world, the wizarding world is rather a ‘cousin’ with their own attributes.

(Traditional European) Wizarding beliefs are intrinsically tied to magic (which ties to the blood and the soul). It is their religion. Magic is viewed as the highest form of power. And because both witches and wizards have magic, it is the fundamental belief that magical women (and men) have power over their own bodily autonomy.

How this affects the world:

The most obvious way to see this is in Chapter 10: Blood Rite, where the traditionalist Slytherin House celebrates Samhain with a ritual that calls to Death, and the first years (+ MC Anesidora) are officially welcomed into the House after learning the unofficial rules.

That chapter also shows wizards having their own death customs! But honestly this fic’s wizarding world is a mix of celtic holidays, Renaissance window dressing, and classical Roman/Greek buzzwords.

Within mythology, witchcraft has such a strong relationship with women’s empowerment that I really try to strengthen the presence of female characters (Miriam, Anne, Isidora), despite the story focusing around a straight relationship and having a male villain and having a male mentor (Professor Fig)...

In contrast to Victorian England, witches have greater control of their life and sexuality. (There are edge cases where this is not true.) I mention a little bit of that culture clash and how it fuels pureblood prejudice. It’s not a main topic of my story, but I do have to touch upon it since I’m exploring pureblood culture in general. Well, as much as I can from the perspective of a girl in a boarding school.

Speaking of which, since Rookwood is a pureblood he has the power of the law on his side. His relationship with MC Anesidora is not immediately hostile.

In general, relationships beyond the ones among the main three characters are important in this setting. The wizarding community + Hogwarts populace is very small and everyone knows everyone. Slytherin House is a tight-knit group that tries to get along because they think it’s them against the world.

Even Ominis, the most isolated of the trio, still has social connections in his cousin, Lyra Black. They aren’t buddies lol but Lyra’s presence gives insight into the softer characteristics of being a traditional(-ish) pureblood.

Oh, I nearly forgot: Ancient Magic doesn’t exist… just kidding. Or not. Anesidora’s power is heightened magical sensitivity and control, which emulates the abilities of ancient magic in the game. The reason for suddenly having that ability is due to transmigration (which is lowkey a thread that I quickly get over…).

Anesidora’s ability is required to get to the repository (which is hidden and not in the Keeper’s Chamber), but it is also a (maternally) inheritable ability. Again, magic is strongly linked with blood.

In fact, most magical talents can be passed down through sharing blood or sharing a soul (Harry Potter’s parseltongue ability). Ancient pureblood Houses will have their own ‘family magic’. However, the truly unique magical traits (Metamorphmagi, Parselmouths, Seers, etc) originate from having interbred with a non-witch/wizard magical creature.

The traditionalist northern European origin myth of magic is that non-magical humans intermixed with the fae and thus the first witches and wizards were created. Does this mean the purebloods are lowkey hypocrites in their blood supremacy? Yeah.

Other background details:

Miriam Fig is alive.

Goblins actually have lives, struggles, and goals outside of being cartoonishly evil enemies against schoolchildren. Offscreen, they manage to win some political rights.

Hogwarts Valley is an all-wizarding region and there are various all-wizarding pockets in London.

Hogwarts follows the Harry Potter books class schedule and has many electives. I plan on showing some of these at the end of the year as NEWT final projects.

Crossed Wands is a thrice a year event and Ominis shows off his dueling skills! (Since he’s been exposed to much more violent situations, he doesn’t blink twice at playfight children’s duels (it would be hard to participate in DADA otherwise).)

There’s like 6+ lesbian characters. They aren’t often mentioned in the story, but there sure are a lot lol

What Historical Era would suit each Hogwarts Character

I got tagged by @/sharlotscarletfox to do the MC time period game by @/t0nks-f4n-gir1 and it reminded me that I had this one in the drafts

Sebastian Sallow: Victorian Era

I know this is literally the time period of Hogwarts Legacy, but hear me out: the Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Frankenstein, Faust, The Picture of Dorian Gray. This is the era of men fucking around and finding out.

Just as these men pushed the boundaries of science/acceptability, so too does Sebastian push the boundary of what is acceptable magic

His path grows darker and darker before succumbing to inevitable tragedy.

This era also has one of the strongest tensions between how a man should act as a gentleman and what his sexual appetites are. We all know how this fandom loves to explore Sebastian's desires.

The vibes reminds me of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Miss Osbourne, which is a film about a man going through a hedonistic sexual journey and his fiancé going 'well sign me up!'

If I had to pick a different era, it would be pre-industrialization Scotland

Ominis Gaunt: Roman Empire on the precipice

This is the roman empire just before its historical fall, the light of its grandeur already tarnished. Barbarians had stripped Rome of its gold, military commanders were challenging each other for authority, the gap between the rich and the poor widened.

The fall of the empire can parallel the fall of the House of Gaunt. Both ultimately survive its catastrophes (Byzantine, Tom Riddle), but never to regain its heights.

Ancient Rome has a few notable stories of men rejecting access to ultimate power of the state in favor of living a simple life as a farmer (Lucius Cincinnatus, Diocletian) and that's something Ominis would totally do

Ancient Rome/Greece have a few mythical and real life figures who are blind (Homer, Appius Caecus), so it's not a black and white situation of 'he would die instantly'

Blindness is also linked with divination, which I cover in my fic

Anne Sallow - Victorian Era

It's a twin thing.

The way Anne gets shafted by the narrative along with Solomon's behavior with her parallels the Victorian attitude of how women should be controlled.

Her curse is tuberculosis /hj

There's a little bit of a class issue at play since we learn Anne and Solomon live a very simple life

The way she is the one who suffers the most for the actions of 3 different men

For a different era, I would go future space exploration era so she can finally find a cure

insta has bad accessibility for completely blind people but Ominis has to make an account anyways for his music class. Sebastian helps him out and picked out the profile picture >:). Ominis follows his class's insta and Sebastian.

In the AU, my OC has a different legal name but she dislikes her father (whose name is known since he works in politics) so she goes by Anesidora and says she's her mother's daughter.

She has a pet snake which she definitely didn't sneak into hogwarts university and got slightly insta famous from posting pics of when she travels around due to her father's job.

HL Modern No-Magic AU - Trio Setup

The other day, I was wildly hallucinating a modern AU oneshot, but it depends on a lot of ideas that I haven't talked about at all. So here they are!

This is in the same universe as my 'What type of tumblr user Hogwarts Legacy characters would be' post.

Hogwarts is a very small university in Scotland that barely anyone has heard of. It’s no Cambridge or Oxford in terms of general populace renown, but as if by magic every single graduate of that school has gone on to be wildly successful. Many legacy families absolutely hate the fact that Hogwarts will admit non-legacy students from lower class backgrounds, but its admissions process is a mystery to all but the highest ranked faculty. There’s no website link or process for potential students to apply. It just sends out acceptance letters.

There are four dormitories students are assigned to. Placement is roughly based off of majors but sometimes students get placed in different dorms depending on rooms filled.

Everyone is in the same year.

Ominis & Sebastian

They went to different secondary schools but met each other online through a Discord server centred around learning musical instruments.

Sebastian’s guitar riff was so bad after he really talked up his skills that Ominis, who rarely interacts in the server, sent a 45 second voice memo roasting the shit out of it.

(Is this foreshadowing for a ‘What HL characters are like as Discord users'?? maybe)

They share a dorm room together and Ominis is the ‘messy’ one because he brought entirely too much stuff and is used to having a much larger bedroom. Everything is organised; he just intrudes on Sebastian’s space. His near-sentient wand is now an actually sentient guide dog. Dobermans are good guide dogs and are the breed of dog to choose their own master, which is another connection to wands. His doberman also doubles as a protection dog.

When he was young, there was an Incident in which his dog bit someone and the dog had to be put down, which upset Ominis a lot

The Gaunt family, on top of being the usual British gentry, are known for breeding very capable dogs. There’s rumours that they breed dogs to fight…

His family still sucks

His parents are extremely absent and his older brother is certifiably diagnosed with a personality disorder, not that anything is done about his sociopathic tendencies besides covering them up.

When they were children, Marvolo once agitated the aggressive dogs and locked Ominis in a pen with them and that’s how Ominis got those scars.

Marvolo actually got sent to one of those teen reform schools when he did something bad to a politician’s son, but the abusive experience there fucked him up even more.

Because religion is in my story (Shadow Consumes the Sun), I’m transferring that over. The Gaunts are catholic (irish heritage) and despite Ominis now being distant from the church, he has all that catholic guilt and religious trauma

Aunt Noctua is alive because I like having living female characters instead of dead ones whose purpose is to move the plot along

Interests

For Ominis’s secondary education he went to a school for the visually impaired. Those schools tend to heavily push music and he stuck with it.

He’s studying music production. To the common people, music producers are hardly known (a few exceptions being Jack Antonoff, Benny Blanco, Trent Reznor). However within the music industry, they are a vital part of the creation process.

Sebastian Sallow

He’s a reddit user and the only playboy thing about him is that his longest romantic relationship lasted 3 months

That makes me sound like I hate him but listen, he’s just a popular nerd. Sebastian’s version of a party is a group study session that devolves into taking shots for every wrong flashcard answer

He's on a scholarship. During freshman year he also had a job to help pay for expenses + Anne, but was too burnt out to continue into second year. His friendship with Garreth was a major help to how he survived finals on 4 hours of sleep

Due to his odd hours, he once was up late in the library and the staff forgot he was still there when they locked up for the night

Tried to spend all his weekends driving back down to Feldcroft to visit a chronically ill Anne, but Anne was like ‘you need to live your life for me, you bloody loser’ and so he only visits once a month

In secondary school, he and his mates tried to start a scottish punk band! They were never commercially successful!

Anesidora Fig

The main character of Shadow Consumes the Sun

True, authentic niece to Eleazar and Miriam Fig. Her immediate family is alive, she just doesn’t like talking to them. She's cousins with Livia Malfoy.

Intended to go to University of London, but her uncle's connections came through and now she's at Hogwarts.

The way she starts interacting with Ominis is that they share a gen ed history class and she drags him into a plot to get the professor fired

Professor Binns still sucks as a history professor and Anesidora wants his ass replaced with someone competent. Binns, however, has tenure and the only way he can get terminated is through a strong justifiable cause… like not providing accommodations to disabled students

Binns is old as hell and still writes on a chalkboard. He has never provided accommodation to Ominis. (Ominis doesn’t care because Binns teaches directly from the book anyways.) But it’s enough that Binns gets replaced.

Once a competent History professor enters the stage, Ominis is like ‘well now I’m failing history. You better help me get through this class, Fig’. They officially become history class study buddies but this quickly turns into them hanging out with a history textbook in the general vicinity.

Anesidora -> history and information science in order to gain a masters and become an archivist

Sebastian -> biomedical science with the hopes he finds a cure for his sister

Rookwood & The Plot

Rookwood has a company that does business with the government. His business is extremely bad for the environment and he polluted the water in Hogwarts Valley. Anne has a chronic illness because of this pollution.

The common people suspect that the Ashwinder Company does dump waste into the environment but they have neither the proof of them doing it nor the scientific evidence to link illnesses to the pollution. There’s also no effective cure to the illnesses.

There’s no goblins because jfc the real world counterpart to a Harry Potter goblin is… yikes

Locations

The thing about living in an old castle of a school is that no one changes the locks. Passed down through his family, Ominis has the key to a disused seminar room that he calls the Undercroft

Essentially, what animals I think suit HL characters the best, taking into account some physical attributes. I’m giving them a non-magical animal and a magical animal just for fun. Tell me what other animals you think suit the characters too :)

I split this into parts because I don't think anyone would read a 1k word post lol

Reasoning I’m linking characters with their animals based on their character theme and physical background. So their storyline, characteristics (blindness, freckles), family (Gaunts, twins), and when they were born (astrology, nativity) will be taken into account, but not used as hard rules. The wiki says:

“Each Animagus bore an identifying mark on their animal form that was caused by some visible trait on their human body.”

so I’ll be giving my idea of what that looks like too.

Sebastian Sallow - Arabian Horse

Parallel: Horses can symbolise power, war, freedom, and transportation. Sebastian is a powerful wizard, excellent duelist, and very much wants to do what he wants. In my fic he plays Quidditch, so that’s why I mentioned transportation (broom riding). Horses will also occasionally give birth to twins and I did need this type of animal to additionally pair well with Anne. Personality: I have him characterised as a guy who is always moving and horses sure do like to run. He has a bit of a wild spirit like an untamed stallion. ‘Stallion’ is also a slang word for someone who is like a playboy, which the fandom likes to characterize him as. I don’t really think he’s a playboy but I think he can have the confidence to act like one (until he finds someone he’s super down bad for and then it’s a whole bunch of stuttering). Species: It’s specifically an Arabian horse because they are the quintessential fiery, proud, intelligent horse breed. I have him as a fire sign so giving him a desert species was what I thought suited him best. Identifying Mark: freckles! He has a bay roan coat– so a red-brown base mixed with white spots like freckles or frosting. Magical Version: Horse Pooka. Pooka are Irish shapeshifting creatures that are often associated with wild colts. They can bring both good and bad fortune and have a mischievous streak about them. They entice humans to take a ride on their back only to lead the rider into “a wild and terrifying” journey, which fits Sebastian very well since he leads MC into a wild journey.
