ONCE — Writebook

Really looking forward to playing around with Writebook. I guess could do a Digital Ocean thing, but I kinda would like to play around with this, you know as an indie publisher of books and other text and image based products.

Downloaded 37Signals’ Writebook because free. I might try to run it locally as a Scrivener replacement, but I’m bristling at the thought of running a full Rails app on the server for what should be static files.

Hat's off to the folks at 37 Signals. They just published Writebook - a free self-hostable and (quite importantly) elegant way to publish books online.

Be it HEY (their take on email) or Campfire (their take on office messaging), I think they are masters at making products.

Both the products above were in decently mature categories. They've addressed meaningful problems and applied creativity to come up with novel solutions. And they've been doing this for decades!

And they're kings at marketing too! 🫡

I think this is very thoughtful. As people grew reliant on services, we forgot about the fundamental property of the internet that everyone with an IP address is equal and you can and should host your own stuff.

How did I become a writer I have been writing for a long time, since I was a child, but I do not consider everything written in that period anything serious. A few years ago, the idea came to me to write a novel and include in it all the interesting things I was looking for, but I didn't find in other books. I carried this idea for 10 years, considering that someday I will necessarily gather all my thoughts together and print. I was also sure I would have the only one novel, so I have to include as many ideas as possible. But time went on, ideas were added and already began to go beyond the existing for the book system of views , thus showing the possibility of writing the following books. So I decided to finally stop the reflections and write the first, but not the only, novel. I cleaned up my act a year and a half ago, and at the moment I already have three novels connected by one cycle. I plan to publish it soon on my own in a type of eBook. Before I published books, I wondered how they could help people. First of all, help should be psychological. Each of the books approaches to the way of revealing the human soul from different sides, because it is necessary to live fully. And so the second book is about... How to turn to yourself when you don't know who you are and what your soul is turned to? Now you can't define the vocation and the world you belong to. Your whole life is a set of abstractions that distract you always from the essence of things. Your job is to remove all of them from your life to leave only the reality to merge with it.
