Neil leaned closer to Andrew without touching him. No matter how much Andrew thought he hid it, the wear and tear of so many hours spent under stress showed in the bags under his eyes. His lips twitched into a grimace every now and then, and for a moment, Neil wanted nothing more than to kiss every frown away.

I'm on yet another work trip this week but hopefully I'll have some time to be able to get some WWs written up.

Edna handed him another ball of yarn and, after making sure he still remembered the pattern, helped him cast on enough stitches for another scarf. That time, she told him to keep repeating the pattern until the scarf felt like it would be long enough. Andrew thought of Betsy and tried to imagine how long she would need the scarf to be. Definitely longer than his first scarf. Maybe he could give that one to the cats, or they could use it as a coaster.

I'D ALSO LOVE SOME SILLY LITTLE BOOP FIC?

He was too afraid of waking Jeremy up if he opened the door to their dorm, so he shoved his comforter to the side and remained in bed. 

In the short time Jean had been awake, he’d managed to instinctively block out any memory of the nightmare that snapped him out of his slumber. However, the constant patter of rain against the windows in the room were enough of a clue as to explain what memories he’d been reliving in his dreams that he didn't need to linger any further to find answers. 

Instead of getting up, Jean stared up at the ceiling, at the constellation of glow in the dark stars that Cat had sent him. And as he traced the shapes and patterns that were slowly becoming more and more familiar, Jean spotted the same lights from the suncatchers dancing over the stars, even though they were much fainter than normal.

But Jean didn’t say anything. Instead, he loosely curled his arms around Jeremy and forced his body to relax.

And eventually, it did.

“I've got you,” Jeremy whispered, and Jean tried his best to accept it as truth.

Somehow, the suncatchers scattered about in their room managed to uphold their beauty even at midnight on the cloudiest, rainiest nights that would block out all of the moonlight. 

Jean found this out after he woke up in the middle of the night with his heart racing and a cold sweat that had glued his shirt to his back.

Jean pouted and kicked his feet back and forth under the counter. He tried again, his voice little more than a grumble: “Could you go back to your own room? Please?” 

“No no no, not quite. I think you'll find a good approach soon, though. I believe in you, Jean,” his grandmother said.

“I don't,” Jean said.

He tried, and failed, to avoid admiring how beautiful Renee was from every angle. Her entire body was muscled, although she ate enough to soften the edges that otherwise would have formed to make the muscles more visible to a person with much less attention to detail. His eyes inevitably drifted from her strong shoulders to her waist, and then further south. 

Given that Abby’s eyebrows were drifting further and further up her forehead when they reentered the home, he could deduce that hadn’t lifted his gaze in time to avoid being spotted. 

“What is it, Nurse Winfield? Is something wrong?” Renee asked, all too innocently. The mischievous smirk on her lips and her glance over her shoulder was enough to prove to him that she knew exactly why Abby had made such an expression. He instinctively looked away, which only further outed himself.

“Oh, I was just admiring how wonderful it is to see Jean looking so peaceful,” Abby said. Jean sent her a glare, which she responded to with a wink when Renee wasn’t looking.

Although his grandmother clearly had to stifle a laugh, she managed to school her expression into one of moderate concern. “A young boy of a stature such as yourself should have a much higher self esteem than that,” she said, raising an eyebrow.  “Now. Give it another shot.”

“I was being sincere,” Renee said, the pain in her voice more than enough to prove she was speaking the truth. “I hope you can help him when I could not.”

“I’ve made a lot of mistakes myself,” she said with a chuckle. “That’s how I know how to tell when I’ve made another. I’m sure once you get the hang of it, you’ll be the speediest knitter out of all of us. It’s one of the best feelings in the world to be able to hardly even focus on what your hands are doing and know that you’re making more progress in fifteen minutes than you once made in a day.”

Regardless, he tucked the finished, shitty square of knotted yarn in his bag and began his work on his first real project. The notion of what he was supposed to do and what the needles wanted to do didn’t quite align, and he found himself frequently holding his project out to Edna in complete silence, only for her to take a look at his work and quickly diagnose the issue and explain how to fix it.

She was usually a woman made of hard lines and soft edges, but the level of wistfulness in her voice was only ever present when she reminisced on a memory that had taken her years, if not decades, to extract the pain from. In other words, Jean knew that the story had to be good. 

“Something on your mind, Mamie?”

Whatever memory she’d been recounting faded from the forefront of her mind, and with clearer eyes, she shook her head, her smile still present but falling. “Nothing you need concern yourself with, dear.”

“So I shouldn’t mention the bruise I have on my leg from when Amélie kicked me in the middle of the night?” Jean grumbled.

“That would make them feel guilty, don’t you think?” his grandmother asked, leaning across the counter in Jean’s direction. There was a softness in her voice that hinted to a larger, unspoken story or memory, and Jean desperately wanted to hear all of it.

“Camille, Amélie,” Jean began, “I haven’t been able to sleep very well lately. My bed isn’t big enough for all three of us to sleep in it every night, and lately I’ve been too warm to be comfortable. I can still read you stories before bed, but I need to read them to you in your own beds from now on, okay?” 

His grandmother’s wrinkled lips thinned into a smile. “Much better.”

His sigh turned into a groan as he peeled himself off of the countertop and sat up, properly. Back straight, his hands in his lap, his expression as controlled and manicured as the fancy but boring garden at the Parc Borély. His grandmother was fond of scolding him for how he carried himself, to the point that he could hear her mantra in the back of his mind without her needing to draw a single breath: You must hold yourself with the same respect you expect others to give you, for if you do not respect yourself, no one else ever will.

“Don't,” Jean whispered. “It’s not your fault. Besides, I know better than to pick up anything that I wouldn't be able to carry."
