YANYEAR JULY 3- Tide Pools
ok i cnat post it on ao3 rn cuz its FREAKING DOWN but whatever
3. Tide Pools
Yanqing peered into the surprisingly clear waters, considering the little crabs scuttling around in them. Yunli and Bailu were similarly transfixed by the anemones at the bottom.
Dan Feng and Yingxing were arguing about the best way to make artificial tide pools– presumably spawned by Baiheng and Yingxing's canal system that had overflowed with murky water, washing out all Dan Feng's little crabs to sea.
Mr. Tail was making a valiant effort to coax Huohuo closer to see the marine life– it wasn't working very well, though she was closer to the pools then she had been 30 minutes ago.
Caelus and Stelle ran across the sand with arms full of little plastic bags of water– were those tiny fish? Dan Heng followed behind with a consigned expression.
"Guys! Guys! Look! The guys at the beach shop said we could feed these to the anemones!" March shouted, far too loud then was probably needed, skidding to a stop at the side of the tide pool. Caelus and Stelle began doling out the bags of fish to each group settled at the tide pools.
Dan Feng and Dan Heng seemed especially infatuated with theirs. They made no move to open the bag and feed the anemones, merely holding it up to the light and staring at the little minnows swimming around inside.
"Can they really eat those?" He wondered out loud.
"Well, anemones eat little fish, right?" March said. "So, they'll probably eat these little fish." "But what about Nemo?" Yunli realized. "The anemones don't eat clownfish. What if we're disrupting the– uh, the ecosystem!"
"She's right…" Caelus gasped.
"It's fine if they eat the fish." Dan Feng sighs. "Just make sure not to put too much in the pools at once." Yanqing took a little paper cup of minnows from Stelle, who was handing them out.
"Yanqing. Yanqing." Yunli stage whispered to him, clutching her own cup of minnows.
"What? I want to feed the anemones."
"I dare you to drink them."
"..?" "The cup! I dare you to drink the minnows from the cup! They're such little fish, how bad could it be?" "I'm not drinking the anemone food." To punctuate his point, he pours a little bit of the minnows into the water just above an anemone.
"You're the worst! First you won't find clams with me–" "I didn't say I wouldn't find clams with you, just that I was busy digging up crabs!" "Yuck. You and Uncle are weird."
He huffed, turning his attention back to the marine life and ignoring Yunli. His peace is shortlived, however, Stelle yelling out and causing half the attendees to look up from their tidepools.
"IS THAT A LOBSTER–!"
Chaos, predictably, immediately breaks out. Yanqing sighs, resolving himself to watching the others run around trying to catch the lobster.

YANYEAR JULY 11- Guitar
IDOL AU TIME IM SO HAPPY IM SO HAPPY. alsoo its late again becausae i am currently stressed and anxious out of my fucking mind send help.
"And now, as everyone has been patiently waiting for, please welcome the famed Jing Yanqing to the stage, everybody!"
"Please, please, that's enough. I get enough applause as it is, haha!" He moves to sit on one of the offered couches, crossing his legs politely and facing the host.
"After the previous break, we've been getting some questions from audience members– would you feel up to answering some? No pressure, of course!"
"I can't promise answers, but go ahead.""Haha, as expected from Jing Yuan's only disciple! Now, our first question is from one Miss Hualiu, asking 'What was your second instrument?' Ah, a continuation of one of the first interviews you've had. Though, I find myself curious as well! The piano being one's first instrument is a common and respectable answer, but the second? Perhaps… a flute? An erhu? Maybe even the drums?"
"Well, you're close, but the second instrument I ever played was actually the guitar."Yanqing peered up at the black guitar hanging unassumingly on the wall, deaf to his father calling his name. It was beautiful– an acoustic, he thinks? At least, the acoustics are the big boxy ones, and the electrics have the knobs n' stuff.
"Yanqing– Oh. Why are you in here, cub?" His dad enters the room, sweeping Yanqing up into his arms. In lieu of a verbal answer (words are hard sometimes, okay!) he points at the guitar, then sweeps his arm to indicate all the other instruments.
His dad pauses, a strange air of melancholy overcoming him. That happened sometimes, when Yanqing did something, or sometimes when Baba woke up in the morning.
"You… hah, you really are just like… Ah, nevermind. Don't pay attention to your Baba's ramblings, A-Qing. Do you want to learn to play the guitar?" He changes the subject quickly. Yanqing narrows his eyes– he's not a baby, he knows all of his Baba's tricks now!– but the temptation of learning to play that instrument is luring him away from his well-deserved revenge.
He nods instead of attempting to uncover the truth. "Well, little cubs have to eat well in order to play well. Here, why don't I bring you a little guitar tomorrow?" Yanqing frowns. Lunch is appealing, but why can't he play the big guitar on the wall? As if sensing his thoughts, his Baba answers. "You can't play that one because it's far too big for you, A-Qing. I bet you could even fit inside it!"
That's just not true! He is big and strong, like Mimi! He would not stand for this slander! Their light-hearted bickering continues as Jing Yuan exits the room, heading towards the kitchen. Yanqing is so incensed that he nearly forgets to be excited for tomorrow– an impossible feat.
"Oh my, the guitar? It doesn't seem too surprising now that we know. Though, I must know, electric or acoustic? There's a right answer here…""Haha, my first was acoustic. Manager Jing Yuan thinks it's easier to learn on an acoustic rather then an electric. And, well, I'm here, so I guess he's right!"
"Not to get off-track here, but could you learning the guitar have anything to do with Jingliu?"
"...Jingliu…?""Since her main instrument was the guitar, some may think your– or Jing Yuan's– choice of the guitar as your second could have been… well, pre-meditated, for lack of a better term, haha!"
"Ah… well…"Yanqing clutched the small guitar reverently, gazing at the strings with awe.
"Do you like it, cub? I almost had to get it custom-made– couldn't find one small enough for the life of me!" Yanqing nods excitedly, complying when Baba sits next to him, showing him how to position himself.
"There you go. Here, this is how you hold the pick– okay, and now your fingers go like–"
He strums the guitar loudly, like he's seen lots of people do on TV. It makes a very loud and discordant sound. He frowns.
"Ah… well, at least you've got strumming down. Maybe let's work on some chords now, huh?"

YANYEAR JULY 10- Car Ride
ofc the idol au section of yanyear starts just when im starting my irl program. life is hell (i literally made yanyear) in my defense i didnt know itd start during this week. i wouldve put idol au further in. this is the shortest drabble but i literally DONT CARE!!!!!
Yanqing curled up in the backseat to the best of his abilities, avoiding jostling Yunli, who was fast asleep on his shoulder.
There, thankfully, wasn't sand everywhere– their dips in the ocean had cleansed most of it away, and Dan Heng insisted on getting out of the water on the rocks. Yanqing was very grateful for that.
His house was… about an hour away still. Ugh! He leaned back, reeling slightly from the phantom currents in his muscles.
Huohuo and Bailu were curled together to his left, fast asleep. Dan Feng and Yingxing were conversing quietly so as not to wake Jingliu, who had wiped out on Baiheng's shoulder. Baiheng was also asleep, but she was a lot less scarier when woken up.
His dad was driving right now, though he'd periodically switch with someone else. Mr. Tail was in shotgun– he would be next in the driver's seat.
Yanqing yawned, relaxing into Yunli, who was practically radiating heat.
He still had an hour, right? Just a little nap wouldn't be too bad, he rationalized.
When they arrived at their house after dropping off Huohuo, Mr. Tail, and Yunli, Yanqing was carried back into the house by a fond Jing Yuan. He slept like a rock for the next 10 hours. Baiheng teased and said it was the longest she'd ever seen someone sleep– which was immediately refuted. Jing Yuan held that record by a long shot.

YANYEAR JULY 9- Diving
anyone else love yanqing
Yanqing peered at the coral, contemplating the little fish that darted in and out of the hidden nooks inside. He was distracted by Yunli rushing past him, sending sand up and obscuring his vision.
"Watch it!" He scolded through the underwater comms.
"Shut it, killjoy!" Yunli retorted, voice only slightly metallic. He ignored it.
Dan Feng floated over, watching the fish in silence alongside him. Some of the fish were attracted to him, swimming around him and hiding in his hair. Yanqing was only a little bit jealous of him and Dan Heng's natural affinity with sealife.
His dad's voice crackled over the comms. "Any updates?" "Not since the last time, five minutes ago, that you checked in." Dan Feng's voice answered.
"Be quiet, I'm examining starfish." Dan Heng chimed in.
"Starfish? Where?" Both Dan Feng and Yanqing asked at the same time, sending each other a knowing glance after the fact.
"Down by the big pink coral– no, it's kind of red, now I look at it– no, more pink, actually…" Caelus starts, trailing off.
"It's, like, to the right of where we dropped in." Stelle adds helpfully.
"No, the left. It was definitely to the left, I would–" Caelus begins the argument, then is abruptly cut short as Dan Heng forcefully moves the twins to a private connection.
Dan Feng turns, swimming off– was he really able to extrapolate the starfish location just from the twins' description? Regardless, Yanqing follows dutifully, only stopping a couple times to examine something particularly interesting.
Eventually, they come upon a little nook near a salmon-colored coral, where Dan Heng is situated. He is pondering the starfish as though they hold the answers to the universe. To the side, Caelus and Stelle are still bickering, gesturing silently in the water.
Yanqing floats over to a cluster of starfish, leaving Dan Feng to meet up with Dan Heng and talk about fish or kiss or something. Whatever adults do.
The starfish do not move as he comes near. They're a lot more colorful then he expected, actually. Caelus swims over with one in his hand. "Yanqing. Look. Look at their underside." He points it at Yanqing, who floats backwards slightly due to the proximity of the wiggling tentacles to his face.
"...Put the poor thing down. I think that qualifies as harassment." Stelle comes up behind him. They resume bickering. Yanqing sighs, plucking the starfish out of Caelus's hand and returning it to it's friends.
He connects to his dad's comms. "Baba, what're you doing right now? These starfish are kind of boring." "Aren't Caelus and Stelle over there with you? I thought they'd be entertaining enough. Are they bored of the starfish as well." "I think they're only here for brownie points with Dan Heng." "Are they getting the points?" "No, Dan Heng is busy with something or other." He steals a pointed glance to where the two are curled up way too close to just be talking about starfish. "Hmm. Come here, me and Baiheng are getting the metal detectors ready. You can be the first one down there with one." "Perfect." Yunli was going to be so jealous.

YANYEAR JULY 8- Buried
i rly need to start queueing these
Jing Yuan lay placidly under the sand, his signature catsmirk remaining even as he was buried. Yanqing giggled to himself as he scooped more sand over the pile.
"We need to sculpt it. We need to make him into a mermaid." Yunli insisted, carrying two buckets of water over.
"Perfect. Yanqing, go get more water." Bailu directed, having finished organizing the seashells by color and size.
"What? Why do I have to do it? Just send Yunli." He grumbled, but got up anywhere, plucking two of the empty buckets that were scattered around.
After flitting down to the shore to fill up the buckets, he valiantly resisted tipping one over Yunli's head in his effort to bring them back.
He kneeled beside the mound of sand, devoting himself to sculpting the sand alongside the other three. Huohuo wasn't really sculpting, more drawing lines in the scales they made, but none of them complained at her.
Jingliu came over, peering down at the five and considering their actions.
"We're turning Baba into a mermaid." Yanqing explained sagely. "When the full moon shines the transformation will be complete." "Ah." Jingliu nods, contemplative. "Cursing your own father in such a way… Dan Feng would be horrified to see his same affliction repeated on his beloved." "I KNEW Dan Feng was a mermaid!" Bailu shouts, standing up. She whips around and runs off, beelining straight towards Dan Feng and Dan Heng who were lounging around the tide pools.
"Ah… I did not mean to set her on them…" Jingliu mused.
"Don't worry. They'll figure it out. But now we have one less pair of hands…" Yanqing peered up at her with a pleading look. When she didn't immediately acquiesce, he turned on the puppy eyes. Nobody could resist his puppy eyes– least of all her.
She sighed, and sat down beside him. "Making me betray my own student in such a way. Unforgivable." "Hey, I've seen those photos of Baba burying you in sand. You are not free from this sin."
"...Who showed you those photos?"

YANYEAR JULY 7- Surfing
this one is small bc i hvnt surfed. if the act of surfing was a bubble and my life was a bubble we would be on opposite sides eof the univesre. please enjoy boyfail yanqing
Yanqing tripped over himself, yelping as he went careening into the water again. Yunli laughed at him, and he resolved to shove her over next time the waves sent him near her.
He clambered back up onto the board, wiping the water out of his face. Huffing, he attempted to keep his balance, only to tip right over as he shifted his weight– there wasn't even any waves!
Peering over the side of the board, he eyed the others enviously. Dan Heng and Dan Feng were riding their boards effortlessly– it kind of looked like they were competing to see who could stay on the top of a wave longer. He huffed.
His dad wasn't surfing– rather lounging on the beach watching them. Yanqing kind of wanted to go join them… but he had to defeat this! If not for himself, then to stick it to Yunli!
Resolute, he climbed back up onto his board, wobbling as he situated himself back on it– not standing up yet.
The waves lapped at him as he paddled back to the sweet spot Dan Feng showed him when they first started, sending a playful glare at Yunli as she turned a bit farther away then he was.
He turned as well, steeling himself not to look back as he started kicking the board further.
Rocking the board, Yanqing felt his heart leap up into his throat as the wave caught him. He snuck a glance over to Yunli, who had started standing up, so he followed suit.
Careful, careful… The board shook as he stood, knees wincing in protest– and he was up! Albeit, very unstable, but he was still upright!
…For all of five seconds, before he fell into the water again.

YANYEAR JULY 6- Sand Castles
this may. be just a lit. just a little late. so. um.... WELL I HAVE THE REST OF THE DRABBLES SO I DONT EVEN WANNT HEAR IT.
The sand sticks to his skin, uncomfortably coarse in the baking sun. But it was all worth it, he thinks, gazing up at their monstrous creation. Hours of work from several different people, and finally, their architectural marvel was complete. Well, nearly complete.
Yunli was, after drafting Yingxing to help, digging several canals a couple inches away from the base of their castle. Actually, Yingxing was less digging and more reinforcing the structural base, but it's the thought that counts.
Bailu and Huohuo were running around collecting seashells and other decorations, then running back to place them in/on the sides of the castle. Bailu had procured couple little flags and umbrellas– upon closer inspection, they were stolen from March's mocktails.
Sushang was busy packing wet sand around pieces of driftwood, or running back and forth carting buckets of water or sand, or general menial work like that. She seemed to be enjoying it, so he wasn't one to complain.
Guinafen laid on a nearby towel, having filmed the whole thing– he wasn't exactly sure if he had helped beyond examining conches Sushang brought to her. Actually, now he considered it, she had run around with Sushang for a time– but he couldn't exactly recall the details.
"Hey, Yanqing! Say cheese!" Yanqing startled, whipping around quickly only to be half-blinded by a camera flash. He winced, stepping away a couple paces– only to topple headfirst into Yunli's moat.
Thankfully, there was no water, but his dignity hurt more then any physical injury.
Yunli burst into laugher from where she was digging a couple feet away. March was stifling his own laughter. In response, Yanqing curled up fully inside the moat– wow, it's a lot deeper then it looks– and accepted his death.
Huohuo peered over the side of the bank, solemnly placing a clam on his forehead. "Don't worry. If you come back as a spirit I'll ask Mr. Tail not to exorcise you."
"Comforting." He groans, plucking the clam off and placing it on the nearest tower once he's dragged himself into a sitting position. "March, I can't believe you'd betray your mentor like this." "Hey, I'm in full support of her actions, so it evens out." Yunli chimes in, skipping over to plop beside him in the trench. "I can't believe you'd antagonize me like this. After we built the castle together!" Yanqing sighed.
"Hmm. That is true. I suppose I'll let you survive this one."
He stood up, dusting sand off his legs, being very careful not to move too close to the castle– if he fell over again and knocked it down, he'd never hear the end of it. Ever.
Sushang accidentally knocked down one of the minor offshoot towers of the building, and March nearly popped a lid. He'd hate to see what she'd do if he destroyed more then that.
Suddenly, a yell rang out from behind them– Yanqing whipped around immediately, eyes wide and searching for the source of the commotion.
…Half the castle stood in ruins, draped over a shellshocked Bailu.
Well, it was only a matter of time, he supposed, watching Huohuo and Yunli scamper over.

YANYEAR JULY 5- Swimming
ok this is late again but I MADE UP FOR IT WITH THIS BEIN THE LONGEST DRABBLE YET! i think. also this isnt set in the same scene as all the others were (which were vaguely in the same scene) the others were intentionally vague so u could interpret it how you wished (modern, canon, etc) this one is aligned with canon sorry
Yanqing hummed to himself as he floated on his back, carried by the waves. Scalegorge Waterscape was beautiful this time of year– well, it was beautiful all the time, but during summer there was just… something different about it.
Bailu, Dan Heng, and Dan Feng seemed to agree, considering how they were darting around in the water like tropical fish, chasing eachother like children. Their cloudhymn fins wove through the currents like birds in the sky, and Yanqing was content just watching the dappled colors from where he floated.
Of course, he was content, at least until two little hands grabbed his ankles and pulled him down into the depths.
He couldn't even protest, indignant Vidyadharan clicks dying in his throat as familiar cloudhymn wrapped around his legs and bled into his meridians. Blinking from the sudden rush of both the water and the cloudhymn, it took him a moment to focus on the weaving shapes around him.
Dan Feng was looking at him expectantly, Dan Heng more worried and reserved, and Bailu was excited as per usual. Why were they looking at him like that? He was answered when he looked down to see a cloudhymn ice mer tail descending from his lower torso. Experimentally, he wiggled his legs, and was rewarded with the tail wiggling as well. The glittering fins reminded him of stained glass.
Honestly, why did they never ask him first before experimenting with their newest cloudhymn spell?
Sighing, he follows Bailu when she zooms off, taking a moment to get used to the odd feeling of swimming with the tail.
She darts off into a coral reef, Dan Feng and Dan Heng hot on their tracks. He slams into the side of a coral a couple times, narrowly avoiding a sharp spinefish, before finally getting the hang of maneuvering in the water.
It was kind of like flying, just… well, it wasn't really like flying. His train of thought is cut off by Bailu abruptly dipping down, swimming through a hole in the seafloor he hadn't even noticed was there. He paused for a moment, before electing to follow her.
Dan Feng and Dan Heng don't follow him in– they're too big to get into the hole. Even Yanqing is pushing it close a little.
He laughs dizzily, cloudhymn transformation sigils on his neck and sides converting the oxygen in the water into stuff he can actually breathe. The tunnels below the seafloor dip and swerve, and it's all he can do just to keep Bailu's tail in his sights.
With a start, they come zooming out in an unfamiliar area– one that strikes the breath right out of his lungs.
An underwater cavern, decorated with glowing algae and coral, little minnows darting in between star-dotted seaweed dangling from the ceiling and swaying in the current. Yanqing had no idea this was even here– it wasn't on any of the geographical maps of Scalegorge.
Well, not much was, considering it was highly illegal to pollute the sacred waters with drones or submarines– even swimming outside designated areas was disallowed.
Dan Feng and Dan Heng suddenly swim up beside him, with matching levels of smugness on their faces.
"Beautiful, isn't it? The location has been passed along High Elders for centuries– you're the only non-High Elder to see this place." Dan Feng speaks in a series of chirps and clicks that carry through the water– it's a trouble and a half to speak without direct tutelage from a High Elder or, occasionally, a Preceptor that's highly advanced in the Vidyadhara's ancient arts.
Luckily, Yanqing has been around the three enough to pick it up– he can't speak it very well though, considering his vocal chords are that of a human and not draconic.
He tilts his head at Dan Feng questioningly, letting out a couple inquisitive clicks. Dan Feng seems to sense his curiosity.
"We brought you here because you were the only one with a body strong enough to handle the experimental transformation." Dan Heng elbows the other dragon with a displeased look.
"And because we wanted you to see it. We trust you, and Bailu was nearly ecstatic when we asked her if she would be okay with it. Bouncing off the walls and everything." Dan Heng continued, glaring at Dan Feng.
Bailu chooses that moment to come shooting over, slamming into Yanqing with the force of an underwater rocket. He goes careening backward, doing cartwheels in the water with the little dragon clutched to his chest.
She's chattering away, voice going too fast for him to understand over the rush of water in his ears. Faintly, he hears the other two laughing– those rats!
He laughs anyway, managing to right himself and let Bailu go, who immediately begins rocketing circles around him.
She grabs his hand, tugging on it excitedly. Yanqing follows her lead, swimming farther into the cavern to explore whatever she wants to show him. The other two dragons get up to whatever they do when nobody else is around– but that doesn't concern him. He's far more fascinated with the tiny, starlike fish coalescing around him.

YANYEAR JULY 4- Fishing
okay this one is so late (and its actually alr midnight for me so oops) but whatev
4. Fishing
A ripple ran out from where Yanqing was skipping rocks, unimaginably bored with the current state of events. His dad insisted patience was a virtue and that the waiting will pay off, but he wasn't convinced. After all, he could be doing so much more interesting things with his time!
He peered over to where Caelus, Stelle, March and Dan Heng were attempting to catch crabs. Well, the twins and March were. Dan Heng was more supervising.
No, actually– he was clutching a crab of his own. Apparently his marine endeavors had inspired the twins and March to catch their own crab. Yanqing stifled a laugh when Stelle toppled over into the water, March and Caelus's laughter ringing across the bank and surely scaring away every fish in the vicinity.
"This is boring. How do you people do this?" Baiheng grumbled.
"It is an art of patience. Of meditation and clearing one's mind." Dan Feng replied primly, sitting crosslegged on the bench. He didn't even have any fishing rods propped on the side of the boat! He had no room to talk.
Dan Feng never liked fishing. He'd come on the trips with them gladly, but he doesn't like to fish. When Yanqing asked, he'd gone on a long rant, but Yanqing retained absolutely nothing of it.
"There are far better ways you could've endeared fishing." Yingxing commented, fiddling with something or other. Yanqing guessed it was some sort of mechanical animal– maybe a goldfish?
Jingliu paid no attention to the bickering that started up, preferring to concern herself with staring into the murky waters. Whenever Jing Yuan dragged them out to fish, Jingliu would stare into the river (or other body of water) for the entire time. Unless a fish bit, upon which she'd become utterly terrifying.
Yanqing once witnessed her wrestle the biggest salmon he'd ever seen into submission. The sight was so different from her typical placid silence that he'd lost his own fish– far smaller then hers, but a fish all the same.
Shouts rang out from the other canoe Mr. Tail, Yunli, Huohuo, and Mr. Huaiyan were on. Yunli had nearly tipped over the side of the boat, inadvertently causing the entire thing to rock and scare Huohuo. A camera shutter clicked beside him, and he turned his head to Bailu, who had somehow gotten ahold of March's camera and was giggling quietly to herself as the polaroid was printed. He paused, looking between the chaos at the bank and the chaos within the other canoe.
"...Bailu, get some pictures of them."
She acquiesced, turning to snap a couple pics of the other scene. Caelus and Dan Heng crashed into the water from where they were tussling, and Yanqing laughed as Bailu took another photo. Those were going up on his wall.

YANYEAR JULY 2- Sunscreen/Suntan
NEWWW PROMPT OUT. everyone say yayyyy everyone say thank you soup we love you soup youre the best writer ever soup see u guys. tomorrowwww
2. Sunscreen/Suntan
"Daaaddd…" Yanqing whined, wiggling in place as a completely unnecessary amount of sunscreen was plastered onto his face.
"Skin cancer kills 60,000 people a year, Yanqing." Jing Yuan answers, finally letting him free and going to go harass Bailu. He doesn't really need to, given that Dan Feng is already doing a good job of that– Dan Feng doesn't need to either, for that matter. Bailu is already all over the sunscreen by herself.
He huffed, running away to where Caelus and Stelle are fighting over the last suntowel. It's not the last, Himeko made sure to pack extra just in case– they're fighting for the sake of fighting. March, for once, isn't filming it, too busy 'getting a tan'.
Dan Heng says she has never tanned, only burnt. March vehemently denies it. Dan Heng and the Stellaron Twins are the ones who tan. Jury's still out on Himeko– she's always below an umbrella.
"This time I'll tan. I even splurged on the extra-expensive sunscreen!" March insists to an unimpressed Dan Heng.
"And I'm sure the extra cost had nothing to do with the current Robin promotion?" He gestures to the image of the popular idol plastered across the tube.
"Well… that was just a plus, okay! 150 SPF!"
Yanqing wanders off to go see what Dan Feng, Yingxing, and Baiheng are up to at the rolling tide. Baiheng is busying herself with digging, and she's enveloped her entire lower body below view from the hole she's steadily carved out.
Dan Feng isn't digging, more rooting around in the abandoned seaweed to pluck out little crabs and let them scuttle in his hands. Yingxing seems far more interested in carving canals between Baiheng's excavation program. He sits down beside them.
"Yanqing. We're demonstrating the blueprint for the next new breakthrough in hydroengineering. You need to get in on this." Yingxing said urgently. It was kind of diminished by the wet sand coating his forearms.
"Ah… Baba already put sunscreen on me. I don't want to wash it off in the sand."
"Suit yourself." He shrugs, and returns to acting out a very convincing trencher.
Dan Feng seems more content to release the crabs into their canal system , padding the tops with seaweed so they don't get away. Yanqing watches them for a moment, partly entranced by whatever entrapment they've concocted.
They're interrupted by Yunli slamming right into Yanqing's back, unable to slow down in the sand.
"You–!" "Watch where you're–!"
Dan Heng sighs from where he'd been bickering with March and sets off to untangle the two, who engaged in a tussle rolling around in the sand, thankfully far away from the miracle of engineering. Looks like he wouldn't be getting his own tan anytime soon.

YANYEAR JULY 1- Grill
first YANYEAR prompt!!!!!!! i meant to post this wayyy earlier but umm. hey i still have 4 hours till midnight.... hah.a........i took a nap ok. is ia crime to take a nap. anyway i hear the hsr servers are up so go gamble or smth AFTER you read my beautiful drabble.
Yanqing laid on the sand complacently while Bailu and Yunli chased each other around the umbrella stand. He had been running with them just a few moments ago, but then he got tired, so now he's sitting down beside the cooler, waiting very patiently (shut up, Yunli!) for the food to be done.
"It'll just be a little bit longer, A-Qing." His dad comforted. "I even bought the good hotdogs this time!"
"I suppose I'll forgive you. But just this once." He sighs, flopping back against the sand. Such a cruel world we live in.
Huohuo trotted over, plopping down beside Yanqing on the sand. "Why're you sitting here?" "I'm waiting for Baba to finish the food." He explained. "He said it was almost done, and then we can go get the others." She nods like he had just informed her of the secrets to the universe.
"Huohuo, do you prefer mustard or ketchup on your hotdogs?" Jing Yuan asked, rummaging with the condiments on a foldup table while the hamburgers sizzled.
"Oh, um… I actually like them with just relish, if that's okay… It's the way Mr. Tail makes them." She stuttered, eyes darting over to her adoptive dad.
"The only proper way to make 'em, no matter what the media says!" He yells back, half occupied by the destructive game of volleyball going on. Yanqing is half tempted to go join in again, if he weren't so tired.
Besides, he thinks, as Baiheng & Yingxing mob Dan Feng for the fifth time after he gets a last-second shot in, he doesn't really want to get more sand in his hair.
"Yanqing, food's ready. Why don't you and Huohuo go fetch the others?" That's all Yanqing needs to hear– within seconds, he's already up and running off to go violently interrupt the volleyball game. Huohuo is walking– at a much more normal pace then him– towards Yunli and Bailu, who immediately run off to go fetch the others from the water.
"Guys, the food is ready!" He yells out after running straight into the middle of the net. Caelus and Stelle's eyes widen, and they immediately nearly trample Dan Heng in their haste to get to the tables.
He laughs, and follows after them, Baiheng and Yingxing falling into step beside him and bickering with each other about who missed the ball last shot.
When they finally reach the table– after Yingxing nearly gets shoved into the water again– there's already a line. His dad is still laughing in that deep, warm way he always does, doling out hamburgers and hotdogs like candy.
