okay so (pre rat a tat) patricks evil/possessed/brainwashed state can ONLY be triggered with music (as shown in the mighty fall-- his eyes glow when the music starts but stop when The Herald turns the boom box off)

then how come patrick is still evil in Where Did the Party Go?

there's no possible way that he can hear the music from Foxes car all the way in the hospital. even with any special/heightened abilities (which I don't think he has at least pre rat a tat. and even then maybe just enhanced stamina/endurance to keep up with Pete) there's physically no way for Patrick to hear the music inside the hospital.

my theory: during his hallucination, he can hear music -- with the song being Where Did The Party Go.

(I first read about the "Patrick hearing music during his hallucination in the wdtpg music video" in this long analysis of the youngblood chronicles)

I think he is hearing the song that we, the audience, hear during the music video simply because of how Patrick sings along to the music. we see him do this in almost every music video for the youngblood chronicles.

- there's two instances of the audience being directly addressed during the lyrics (Once by Tommy Lee/The Prince in Death Valley and second by Elton John/God in Save Rock and Roll) so it's not completely out of left field to say that the songs have been in-universe acknowledged. -

but before wdtpg I don't think there's been an in-universe presence of the music. I think this video is where the music is first acknowledged by a character.

there's two sides to the wdtpg video: reality (shown by the blue hue of the hospital) and Patrick's hallucination (shown by other neon colors/the presence of the zombie hospital partygoers/the disco ball).

the ONLY time Patrick is singing along to the lyrics is when it is shown that he is hallucinating-- the first/easier example is near the beginning of the song, when he first sings the prechorus "and all the boys are smoking menthols/girls are getting backrubs". we know this is a hallucination because the color of the hallway changes from blue to neon yellow and he is walking much faster (as well as Patrick is stumbling around almost zombie like-- in fact, the zombies in this video seem more alive than he is). when the scene cuts back to reality it shows that Patrick isn't singing at all and is instead wandering around, searching. the next hallucination scene when he's with the nurse, he's singing along to the chorus

unlike the other videos where it's kind of random when Patrick is singing along, the singing in wdtpg feels intentional. Patrick is never shown singing in reality/while hunting the other band members. But while he's hallucinating that party, he IS singing along, oftentimes he's singing TO some other person (the girl in the wheelchair in the hallway, and the nurse in the next scene).

when the singing in the video ends, Patrick snaps back into reality (RIGHT after the last "na na na" part, Patrick's eyes fade back to blue) and sees what he's done. it can't be because he killed Joe that he snaps back-- Joe is dead before Pete and Andy get there (judging by where Patrick is when Pete enters the room). in fact, Patrick starts walking over to them as if he's going to try and kill them next. In Miss Missing You-- the only other time we see Patrick possessed for a long period of time-- the death of Pete (and his own death) isn't enough to stop his evil state. (however, that is post rat a tat, where his brainwashing/possession has been fully completed so take that bit with a grain of salt).

I think this is the first instance we see (and one out of very few) where a character in universe acknowledges the music (and the only other two characters are literally The Devil and God so. add that with the metaphor that Patrick is a messiah type/Jesus figure in the ybc and it creates some interesting parallels between the three).

Also Patrick was like. Awake for all this. He was heavily drugged by the time of young volcanos but he could very clearly see that his friends were eating his organs (and they were definitely eating more than just like a kidney because the shots of the food paralleled with multiple surgery scars on Patrick's body imply that many more organs were taken out.)

I believe the one shot of Pete vomiting blood + the snake (along with some shots of the young volcanos video) imply that he also figures it out but?? Andy and Joe NEVER realize it and it's not even known if Pete even knows what happened at that dinner. Patrick probably knows some as he was awake to see what was happening but too drugged to comprehend it (by the time of the young volcanos video he is very out of it and giddy, so he's been drugged for a while).

This definitely ties in with the brainwashing Patrick goes through where he becomes hostile to music itself . He's had to cannibalize not only part of his physical self but also his metaphorical self.

- physically Patrick has eaten part of his own body that was forcibly removed from him. Like this wasn't skin or anything THESE WERE HIS INTERNAL ORGANS that were being eaten. And Patrick wasn't even put under anything for the operation either: he's wide awake as the women dissect him in The Phoenix mv. There's also some really fucked up ties to the last supper (which adds to the messiah like imagery that surrounds all of the guys but Patrick specifically) as the four of them literally consume the body and blood (I think it's also implied that the wine they drink is blood? Not entirely sure but it is possible). Patrick has part of him consumed by not only himself by but others-- others that he absolutely loves.

-metaphorically a part of him was torn out violently and then consumed by himself in the form of music. Patrick is the frontman! The lead singer + rhythm guitarist! He is VERY tied to music not just in fall out boy but also in his solo stuff. Which is why HE is chosen to become the brainwashing victim instead of Pete or Andy or Joe. Music is very very important to who Patrick is as a person, and that part of him is VIOLENTLY removed in an invasive procedure (paralleling the physical invasive procedure of the dissection in the Phoenix). Both the Alone Together and Rat A Tat mv show how painful the brainwashing process is for Patrick. It's implied he's being violently shocked (the electrodes on his head) while being forced to listen to music, which creates a sort of response that associates music to violence and pain and anger (in a sort of Pavlov's dogs type of experiment). Here Patrick is forced to "cannibalize" his music (whether it was his music or not that he was conditioned with, it's music all the same it's quite literally part of his body) and become something evil for the benefit of others.

What you said about the intimacy of it all-- carrying a part of the person you love inside of you in the most literal, evil sense-- is totally correct and I feel like it has something to do with the toxic relationship imagery that is spread throughout Fall Out Boys music (but VERY specifically in Where Did The Party Go and Miss Missing You).

- both of these songs address a relationship. A very toxic one at that-- WDTPG directly draws parallels between a person and a pack of cigarettes. They're beautiful (in a twisted sense) from afar, but it's only after you start to get involved that true colors are shown and you start ingesting poison. Specifically this parallel to cigarettes makes me think of the feast in Young Volcanos and how Patrick has to watch the people most important to him (whether you choose to view it romantically as in Pete or strictly platonic is up to you. The idea is the same at its core). Patrick has to watch this sort of twisted up beauty-- beauty being in the form of a holy supper, twisted in the sense they are literally consuming his body and blood-- and he eventually has to ingest his own poison himself. Patrick is both ends of the toxic relationship that he has with himself: he is the person that is toxic and dangerous and who you shouldn't get near because he will hurt yoy (as evidenced by him killing Joe and Pete in the two songs I specified) while also being the person dragged into a toxic relationship that slowly poisons him from the inside out.

ybc musical costume in-depth analysis! 💥🎸🎱

hi! I'm jordan, the costume designer (and also an actor and co-writer) of "the young blood chronicles" musical! i posted this on instagram, but i thought it might be cool to post it here too!

my initial role in “the young blood chronicles” musical was costume design, which, as a fashion enthusiast, i was incredibly excited about. i spent about a month curating a huge pinterest board collection and creating individual moodboards. the show takes place in 2013, but i wanted to take inspiration from both pre and post-hiatus fall out boy looks! here’s an in-depth look :’)

patrick’s main inspo was his “soul punk” era, which lives distinctly in the hiatus. i wanted something that would remind us that years had passed since the last time the band had made music together; something cool and trendy, but a little too dressed up for a long day in the studio. even when not onstage, ybc patrick is performing. clothes can give you power and he knows that. the yellow sunglasses were our way of getting around patrick’s glowing yellow eyes from the music videos, but i really love how it makes it seem like he has a mask on. it makes the end of “miss missing you” even more heartbreaking.

pete’s main inspo came from both his early clandestine drops as well as his more androgynous looks (both pre & post-hiatus). pete really cares about fashion, but he still has a chill la vibe. 2013 pete could often veer more edgy, but i chose to move in a different direction in order to better distinguish pete and patrick’s styles. unless you’re a vixen or patrick, you don’t get a leather jacket! sorry pete! to me, pete’s fashion has always felt so current while still being forward-thinking. ybc pete’s outfit could be from 2006 or 2024 and that was very purposeful!

andy’s looks are mostly pulled from more recent years, but band tees never go out of style. the mesh top under the tee alludes to his tattoos, which make up the extent of his stage looks these days since he typically does shows without a shirt on. celia had this mesh top in her closet and i love the colors on her (it’s the only source of color in the heaven outfits!). andy’s outfit is maybe the simplest of the four on paper, but i think it’s sick. it’s laid back, but super specific and grounded. it makes me want to start wearing basketball shorts.

joe’s looks are pulled from both pre-hiatus and early post-hiatus looks! striped sweaters & cargo pants are things he’s worn before, so i'm lucky i had them in my closet (especially since i wasn’t originally joe!). joe, especially in recent years, really likes wearing dark colors onstage, but, similar to how i avoided leather jackets for pete, i wanted to very clearly differentiate the boys from the vixens. any black piece of clothing on any of the boys had to be broken up with a design or pattern. no all black outfits! sorry joe!

the goal with the heaven outfits was to make the exact same outfits in all white. i wanted the exact same silhouettes as before. i’d say we were pretty successful! we got really lucky when it came to finding these costume pieces.

my vixens! these costumes were a lot more nebulous throughout the process. many of the costume pieces came from the actors’ own wardrobes. it was really important to me that each vixen had her own distinct style. baylee’s vixen (whom she named blair) has a more feminine style, her main costume piece being a lacy leotard. she's sweet with an edge. ava’s vixen is second-in-command & her outfit really screams that. the lingerie top is so killer. alexa’s vixen is almost a mix of baylee’s & ava’s in terms of style. the outfit is sweet, but edgy with the ripped tights & lingerie-style top. lauren’s vixen is a little more utilitarian, actually dressed in a way that makes sense for kidnapping four people. she’s more sporty than the others, but her combat boots are incredibly threatening. hbic is all that and more. her outfit is simple, but powerful. she is terrifying.

tiffany had to feel a bit like an outsider. she’s wearing the vixen clothes, but her jacket has some color on it. it’s a little too big on her. the other vixens really live in & embody their clothes, but for tiffany, it's a bit more like a costume.

here’s how i describe the angels: 1) the hottest girls at the ren faire & 2) like that picture of the angel guiding the two kids that every latine family has in their house. they almost feel out of place; so incredibly fluid in a show that is mostly made up of harsh lines. texture and layers were really the name of the game here, but the angels still have an edge to them. to quote fob: “…angels choking on their halos, get them drunk on rose water. see how dirty i can get them, pullin' out their fragile teeth & clip their tiny wings.”

+ i made pete’s bass machete and tiffany’s/joe’s guitar axe! i don’t have much to say about them, but i loved getting to utilize my cosplay foam skills.

this was my first time ever costuming a show and it was such a dream. the entire cast was so willing to experiment with me and it was such a joy to revisit aspects of 2013 fashion, which i remember from my preteen years, but never got to truly participate in! :’)
