Central Social Hall; The Perfect Mediocrity

A rather artless offering, the Nachos at Central Social Hall in downtown Edmonton, were indeed, as the menu suggested, "Fare for Sharing". Simply topped with canned black olives, jarred jalapeños, and medium cheddar, the platter was a naive affair. Overall salt levels were solid, the layering was decent, and the portion was large, but these nachos were nothing to write Ol' Uncle 'Cho about. House-made pico de gallo added a slight change-up, and cheese distribution was good, but otherwise, the dish was uninspired. Don't get me wrong, I ate a whole bunch of 'em, accompanied by a $4 "Taptini" (aka. sourpuss from a gun), and had a great breakfast, but I wouldn't recommend Central as your weekly nacho haunt.

If you're a hungry pro-sports team, perhaps this $17 mega-platter would impress, but otherwise, save your hard earned nacho-dollars for alternate tortillas.

More like "Above Ground"

If you think about what we refer to as "underground", it's usually a hidden gem, a secret coolness, the next unusual trend, or a stick-and-poke tattoo. 

However, the nachos at The Underground (10004 Jasper Avenue) are not what the name suggests.  They are mainstream, conventional, and more like a clumsy spray-on tatt you might get at KDays.

Two single red nacho chips flanked the dish, surrounded by their golden counterparts; a sign that the kitchen was really trying to make a decent profit on those two extra chips before opening up the next bag. While the portion was adequate, we ran out of both the salsa and sour cream.

The menu suggested the salsa was homemade, but if it was I would be shocked, because it tasted like many other salsas I have reviewed, a flavour that is best described as "like can". 

I enjoy fresh jalapeños as much as the next guy, but their spice combined with an overwhelming amount of both red and green onion created a flavour that bordered on B.O.

The greatest offence these nachos were guilty of, however, is the fact that (and I have experienced this at least three times at The Underground), the cheese always sticks to the bottom.  You are forced to sit at the table, like a savage, picking away at all of the delicious cheese stuck to the bottom of the pan.  Yes, I said forced.  Nothing makes me more sad then to see perfectly good cho cheese go to waste.

My suggestion for The Underground, invest in some new ceramic nacho dishes, some bigger ramekins, and a more unique personality.  Then make better nachos.

Kelly's Pub; Good for Grub

The thing I love most about the Baked Nachos at Kelly's Pub (10156-104 Street) is the olive tapenade.  The olives are chopped so small, I always think they are ground beef or weird small beans.  Luckily for me, they're tiny chunks of olive, and I love olives.

This dream-tapenade (or dream-penade as I like to call it) provides a nice salty balance to Kelly's house-made tortilla chips.  Kelly's is bold enough to use thinly-sliced fresh jalapeños, which add a freshness to the dish, and don't overcomplicate the saltiness, like canned jalapeños can. This is a choice which will turn off spice-haters, but turn on me.

The 'chos could use more cheese, but other than that, they're pretty solid.

My experience on this particular night in July was tainted by semi-garbage service, but seeing as how I frequent Kelly's Pub, I think this was an anomaly and I would encourage you to check the place out.
