I love to see people being selective about what's in the books.

The whole "a mate would know what's wrong," but Lucien can't see what's going on with Elain, and the same with Azriel and Gwyn. -> FALSE

Madja in ACOWAR:

The ancient healer jerked her chin toward Lucien. “See what he can do. If anyone can sense if something is amiss, it’s a mate.”

Previously to this phrase, Lucien had asked the IC to get Elain out of the house where she was withering away for months; she was depressed. He asked them to take her to a garden or the sea. And that's what they do, turns out it helps Elain. He knew that being locked in that house was killing her. He saw she was suffering and offered a solution.

I could have sworn his ruby hair gleamed like molten metal as his temper rose. But it faded, his russet eye fixing on me. “Take her to the sea. Take her to some garden. But get her out of this house for an hour or two.”

Fast forward to the same chapter Madja tells us this information. They let Lucien for the second time be near Elain.

The sound seemed to startle Elain, who swiftly set down her teacup. She rose to her feet, and Lucien shot to his.

“I’m sorry,” he blurted.

“What—what was that?”

Lucien pulls in the bond, Elain is startled, stops, apologizes, and then Nesta interferes. It's then that Elain has a proper vision in front of Lucien for the first time. Elain described a vision in front of the others previously, which she called nightmares, Azriel shows interest. After that Nesta asks Elain what she wants "sunshine"

Elain only stared at him for a long moment. And any lucidity faded away as she shook her head, blinking twice, and said to Nesta, “Twin ravens are coming, one white and one black.”

Back to Lucien they ask him what he felt. He confirms there is a bond (more to himself) and what he felt was something different.

“No—I didn’t have time. I felt her, but …” A blush stained his cheek. Whatever he’d felt, it wasn’t what we were looking for. Even if we had no idea what, precisely, that was.

It's finally when Azriel has been present for more than one vision and knows what happened in the library that he stops a concerned Lucien:

“She doesn’t need anything,” Azriel answered without so much as looking at Lucien.

Elain was staring at the spymaster now—unblinkingly.

“We’re the ones who need …” Azriel trailed off. “A seer,” he said, more to himself than us. “The Cauldron made you a seer.”

Azriel who saw Elain as an advantage for the Night Court in the upcoming war. Once again, I bring this up, if Azriel names the powers she gained, does it mean it's a problem, an ill, because "a mate knows what's amiss with them"? Or does Rhys naming Nesta's powers now make him her mate?

Let's go to the Bonus chapter. Azriel reads Elain's lie like an open book. No, it's not because he is his mate, it's because he reads people. With that same logic, Azriel should be Bryce's mate because he saw through her lie without even knowing the language or seeing how she had hurt herself with the rocks (he isn't, obviously).

And Azriel does know what's going on with Gwyn, she doesn't like the memory that both have resurfaced.

For a heartbeat, their gazes met. He blocked out the bloody memory that fashed, so at odds with the Gwyn he saw before him now.

Her head ducked, as if remembering it too. That he’d been the one who’d found her that day at Sangravah.

Gwyn makes a dismissal and Azriel doesn't accept it and teases her, they both do. Once again we see Azriel read Gwyn.

Pure amusement glittered in her stare. Better than the pain and grief he’d spied a moment before. So he offered her a crooked smile. “I can’t sleep without my favorite dagger.”

And he asked Gwyn if she was cold, not because he couldn't see what was going on, but because Azriel had been torturing himself with the cold night a couple of sentences before. When he leaves, Gwyn is still training, and he once again brings up the cold; he tells her not to be out much more or she'll freeze.

“Happy Solstice,” Azriel said before aiming for the archway into the House. “Don’t stay out too much longer. You’ll freeze.”

i'm thinking about the guards outside aventurine's room in the reverie. stuck working a boring security job on THE planet of festivities, stationed outside a room in boring reality where someone's literally just sleeping all day. absolutely jackshit to do.

but there's no way aventurine would trust just any old grunt to guard him when he's that vulnerable; they had to have been hand-picked, personally vetted over years of working for him. it's no small feat to become someone aventurine trusts not to stab him in the back, even with the built-in insurance that if you shank your boss, he can't sign your paychecks anymore.

so they were familiar enough with him to know how he works, i.e., pulling off insane stunts and doing it solo. i have to think they're the kind of people who would've wanted to join him - not because they're sore about not getting to see the dream, but because they want to guard him IN the dream. you have a whole team of us, boss! put us to work!

and he keeps insisting no, he has to do it alone. it's too risky.

what could notorious gambler aventurine possibly find "too risky?" it's not that he thinks they'll slow him down or get in his way; it's not that he just prefers working alone or hates relying on others. that's what other people, in other departments, might think.

but these guys know: he does these missions solo because he doesn't want to risk their lives - that's the unacceptable risk to him.

(they also know not to ever say so aloud, because said notorious gambler has a reputation to maintain, and "worries about his employees' wellbeing" does not fit the image.)

So very interesting that these shots of Dean getting attacked by a vampire are constantly used to reference him being the 'subject of male gaze', situate him as the 'female', claim it's a simulation for gay sex or SA, or to showcase his supposedly submissive nature, that Sam dominates him, etc.

But no one (that I've ever seen) goes on to apply those ideas to what happens next- namely, Dean resists the temptation to turn and kills every vampire in that nest single handed while also kinda hallucinating. Then his family finds him like this:

It feels safe to assume that's the case because those theories don't make sense in the big picture and they only look plausible in the short snatches of story line that always get picked out for this.
