Yo La Tengo - Brave New World on KCRW, June 11, 1997
Way back in the 1990s — Yo La Tengo made their way to Santa Monica College to record a brief session on Tricia Halloran's Brave New World program on KCRW. Sometime earlier that year, the band had been on campus to film the classic "Sugarcube" video — a video that is always worth revisiting. I was a regular Brave New World listener at the time, tuning in whenever I could. But I missed this particular show ... and I'd catch YLT the next night at the Troubadour, as they brought the then-brand-new I Can Hear The Heart Beating As One to the masses. I bought one of the shirts you see above ... and apparently someone on eBay is trying to sell one for like $300 right now. I think mine disintegrated sometime in the early 2000s.
This little broadcast, brought to us by the 3 Cameras and a Microphone channel, is pretty sweet. First, we get the various members of the band DJ-ing (and some moody ambient improvs as a backing soundtrack). Then, a short live set, accompanied by some groovy radio static noize; the band seems to think it's a malfunction, but it works pretty well as accompaniment. Especially good is the closing "Autumn Sweater" — it's the rarely heard quasi-Fakebook arrangement, with strummy guitar and dreamy vocal. We could slip away ...

This was the first version of the last artwork I made. It had a warm, cozy vibe with natural lighting but I wanted stronger contrast between light and darkness. I also wanted to practice using only two colors for lighting to make a composition so I discarded all lighting setup and started again. And I replaced Nuri's sketchbook(from Adobe asset) with a model I made because it looked too detailed considering its size compared to Nuri, who is like a mid sized doll in my mind.
At first I used a photograph I took as a background image but it felt limited. So I was like... why not just draw the background?! It was a great excuse to use Procreate.

I don't know why picking 10 favorite albums was so agonizing, especially since half of this list has been set in stone for years, but goddamn. Anyway, tagged by @idasessions for this! Now I'm curious to know what some of my other longtime mutuals are into, if they feel like it. Tagging @fletcherslayer @spencegeek @acleanexecution @eatyourcandyfloss @youidiotkid

5/7/25.
I can't believe that either Micah or other friend Andy never turned me onto either Bill Fox or his band The Mice. His music is right up both their alleys.
Fox first appeared in the 1980s as the leader of Cleveland-based band The Mice. Heck, they even split a 7" with Yo La Tengo. The Mice tended more to power pop in the vein of Big Star and fellow Ohioans, Guided By Voices. Scat Records issued a career spanning compilation CD back in 2004.
In the 1990s, Fox embarked on a solo career, and "Shelter from the Smoke" was the debut and the amazing songwriting is still evident while the songs are toned down. Elliott Smith was a fan, and listening to this does bring to mind Smith's work. But, the harmonies are downright Byrdsesque or reminscent of Teenage Fanclub. And, one can't help but think of Bob Dylan and Pete Townshend.
Finally, I can't imagine that Tony Molina hasn't listened to a ton of Bill Fox over the years. Scat Records reissued "Shelter from the Smoke" and "Transit Byzantium". And, Fox just released a new album, "Resonance". It looks like the initial run sold out, but a new shipment is coming in and you can reserve your copy at Eleventh Hour Recording Company.

Yo La Tengo - Butchie's Tune (2015)
From Yo La Tengo's second covers LP Stuff Like That There, with original YLT guitarist Dave Schramm joining in. Here's a wonderful, warm version of the Lovin' Spoonful song, with Georgia on vocals.
I'll leave and close the door so you won't see me go
