So Sanji’s brothers would beat him up when he was younger because he was the weak one? Even his younger brother?
I know all 5 of the siblings were abused by the dad and it’s not uncommon to see the dynamic where some siblings are formed into the bullies of the other. However it makes me wonder if any of them get a redemption arc or if all the fan art I’ve seen of the brothers is pure fanon!
Have yall been lying to me again!?

no, your point was loud and clear.
because i have this same issue too.
where is the line? why is there a line?
intention doesn't make it less problematic.
ai di and yongjie are the same issue i have with (excuse me for using this example) kinn and vegas.
vegas planned to rape porsche and so he is bad. but somehow, kinn's actions were seen as less harmful because "he didn't intend to rape porsche. it just sort of happened."
after all, porsche and chen yi both wanted it. after all kinn and ai di didn't plan it.
to me, there's no clear cut difference ai di and yongjie. both guys fucked up. and those were thier brothers.
the two reasons that have made the most sense to me are:
people who could have been hating on the incest/noncon in kdtm were already ticked off by the age-gap with ruizongyi to begin with and already left
kdtm is less shocking because it's been seen before. hcty's situation came out of nowhere and so people resisted it more because it was relatively newer
any "moral" reason works against both couples, in my opinion. because they're as brotherly as each other and the situations are both murky. we just have to accept and/or enjoy them the way they are
someone needs to explain something to me
how come no one was okay with the incest in History 4: Close to You, and yet, everyone is actively shipping the incest in Kiseki: Dear to Me?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both sets of brothers:
were raised by the same parent(s).
were not blood related
had one brother see the other as a brother while the other was clearly in love for years
had sex while one was drugged/drunk
I mean, how come? Because if H5 was sooooo bad, how come KDTM is somehow... okay?

Additional thoughts on the ending of Ruyi & Zhen Huan, per discussion with @guzhuangheaven, that I had while unloading the dishes.
The more I rewatch Ruyi and Zhen Huan, the more I'm convinced that Zhen Huan actually had the bleaker ending, even though on the surface level it's the other way around. For the simple reason that Ruyi - as sad as the end of her story is - fundamentally got what she wanted as a character: freedom (see, the letter she wrote to Yongji).
But Zhen Huan, when I look from her starting point -- she got power at the cost of everything else. She lost virtually everyone she loved, even her identity, and it's hard to imagine how her life will have any joy in the next 50 years. It will be an endless cycle of scheming to keep her power, and thinking about it (we saw that in Ruyi) is just exhausting.

Hi ABL! I was wondering if you have recs for bl couples where a younger seme/top aggressively pursues an older, initially-unwilling uke/bottom?
I realized this trope was my absolute JAM when I fell hard and fast for Wei Zhiyuan x Wei Qian, Sun Boxiang x Lu Zhigang, and Yongjie x Xingsi. Bonus points for age gap, stepbrothers trope or the older uke being endlessly indulgent?
I mainly watch China and Taiwan bls, so I’ll love anything from there. I’ll take recs from other countries too, they might become my first foray into non-mandarin bls
I know this is a somewhat specific request so thank you sm if you manage to come up with anything! I really appreciate all the work you put into this blog ā˜ŗļøšŸ’œ
Oooo MY FAVORITE!!!
Hyung Romances! (wrap-up post)
I call these hyung romances because that's like noona romances but gay.
Specifically you said:
younger seme aggressively pursues an older initially-unwilling uke
I am utter TRASH for this! YES PLEASE!
Minato’s Laundromat
Japan 2022 GaGaĀ
AKA Minato Coin Laundry AKA Wash My Heart! AKA Minato Shouji Koin Randorii AKA Minato Shouji Coin Laundry
Younger seme older uke, very clearly yaoi derived dynamic, 10 year age gap. I love this show so much. This is by far the best long running example that really dwells on this trope, Shin is very much the aggressor also very much still a high school kid. Minato is very much NOT.Ā
Tumblr media
Old Fashion CupcakeĀ
Japan 2022 Viki & GaGaĀ
Also from Japan, another 10 year gap, and a flipping genius version. This time both parties are older, so there’s less of a stigma around the age gap, but there is stigma about the one being the other’s boss.Ā
This show had me from the moment they broke the egg yolk with the chopsticks in the opening credits for episode one. It’s about a younger man with a long cherished crush on his boss (ten years older and going through a mid life crisis) who decides to save and seduce said man with pancakes. It’s wholesome, comforting, sexy, and a very necessary narrative about still having hope, interests, and openness to affection at any age. It’s coming of age/queerness packaged in a subtle critique of expectations around masculinity and love and loneliness... and it’s beautiful. Full review.Ā

Lovely Writer
Thailand 2021 YouTubeĀ
Sib is quite a bit younger than Gene and defines aggressive pursuer. Gene is out of university and established in his career, Sib is still in college.
Thailand criticizes itself and the BL industry while simultaneously giving us classic seme/uke with great chemistry in a one-two punch of ā€œwe love it, but are we supposed to? and must we think this hard, yet enjoy it SO MUCH?ā€ This show won’t appeal or make sense to those who don’t already have at least some Thai BL watching experience. What Lovely Writer does, at heart, is reexamine Thai BL has done to queerness, but in a very gentle way that has more to do with Thai BL growing up than any actual queer authenticity. It’s not parody or pastiche, but it is self reflective and trying to correct for some chronic mistakes. Whether it is ultimately successful in this matter is going to depend on the watcher’s relationship to BL and queer identity. But that’s what makes this show beautiful, interesting, and thought provoking. And I, for one, applaud the effort even if I didn’t personally connect to the characters.

Oxygen
Thailand 2020 YouTubeĀ
Thailand’s first real stab at this dynamic as a main couple and it so worked for me. There are many who find this BL too slow and wooden, but I loved it.Ā
I think of this as a paragon of Thailand’s softer BL style, since Oxygen uses every BL trope in the playbook for one of the gentlest lowest angst BLs ever made. This one showcases how far Thailand is moving BL from its yaoi roots, and is a prime example of the sweet ā€œnew BLā€ model for which Thailand is the main advocate (Korea is liking it a lot these days too, tho). My first watch along.Ā
Tumblr media
SOTUS
Thailand 2016 YouTubeĀ
Guess who started this trope in Thailand? Yeah, sometimes I forget too. But they are not just classic sunshine/tsunder but classic younger/older.Ā Just not by much.
This is the BL that launched a hundred BLs. No literally, it was SOTUS’s international success that pretty much built the Thai BL industry into the juggernaut it is today. People have baggage around SOTUS, I have nostalgia. Trigger warning on bully hazing. Review here.Ā

En of Love: TosseraĀ
Thailand 2020 YouTubeĀ
Younger boy wants to court older boy and does and… that’s it. No really that’s the WHOLE STORY. There is actually no angst, drama, or, indeed plot. But are they the softest bois ever to BL as a main couple? Yes they are.
*pulp warning*

Private Lessons
Korea 2020 GaGaĀ
A BL short from Strongberry that I love, it's age gap and teacher/student (catnip por moi). The chemistry is slightly off though, but stil I do love this one for the dynamic. Certainly worth watching especially if this is your trope since it's like 8 minutes long and very stylish.
MingKit MarkKit
2 Moons (VERY side dish) YouTubeĀ 2 Moons 2Ā YouTube (major side dish) Gen Y (leads) Gen Y 2 (sides again in LTR)Ā
Thailand’s premier version of this dynamic I just lumped them all into one category. Only in 2 Moons 2 are they played by different actors, otherwise it is all KimCop, and who can complain about that? If you want to watch specifically for this dynamic than go for Gen Y. Trash watch here.Ā
SIDE DISH CORNER
Not Me (DanYok)
DanYok is an age gap, but it isn’t really the point or the plot of their romantic arc
Don’t Say No (LeonPob)Ā
Leon and Pob qualify. That’s all I have to say about that.Ā
HIStory 3: the BL that shall not be named (BoXiang & ZhiGang)
Also appear in HIStory 4: Close to You
The side characters in H3:MODC (and cameos in H4) BoXiang & ZhiGang have a huge age gap, 12 years, and it is a big deal for their relationship. When they start outĀ BoXiang is a desperate himbo high school kid andĀ ZhiGang is a small business owner.Ā BoXiang’s friends tease him more for his lust over such a much older man than for being gay.Ā
Bonus on this one, there is some very high (and it's Taiwan so) very well done heat. That said, the main couple will, in fact, wreck your psyche for life. Proceed with caution.
THE THAI PULPS
You’re My Sky (SanAei)
Side could (and only good part of this show) SanAei are a classic uni age gap pairing. San is a bit of a spoiled rich kid jock who identifies the older nerd character as HIS and is just like, MINE. That’s MY elder gay.Ā
Brothers (KhunKaow)Ā
This is not a good show, but side couple Khun & Kaow are great in it. Khun is in university and Kaow has a small baking business.
Top Secret TogetherĀ andĀ Love By ChanceĀ both have sub plots of high school boys pursuing college ones, but the one didn’t go anywhere and the other went very very bad, so yeah… no. Although I would personally LOVE to see this done well.Ā
BONUS POINTS ROUND
Stepbrothers trope
HIStory 4: Close to You (sides)
YongJie is quite a bit younger than XingSi, not sure on the specifics but he’s in middle school when XingSi is in high school and still in college when XingSi has his own business.
Addicted has the stepbrothers trope but not the age gap.
Older uke being endlessly indulgent
Tumblr media
Future
Thailand 2023 YouTubeĀ
Based on a y-novel by Faddest (En of Love) about an engineering student and a dentist (shocker). This is just a soft sweet cotton candy fluff piece about a younger boy who pursues an older boy and then manufactures silly gay drama. Nothing wrong with that. But I don’t think this style of BL really appeals to a very large market share. Will I rewatch it? Sure. Will anyone else? Nope.
If you want your endlessly indulgent older gay, this is the you crack, they made if for you.
*pulp warning*
Tumblr media
Manner of Death
Thailand 2021 WeTV
It’s not really relevant to the story, but Tan is younger. Not only that, he’s Bun’s friends younger brother.Ā Bun is very indulgent, but in a grown up way.
I like MoD a lot but I’m conflicted over it being actual BL. It’s a great gay romantic suspense, although the mystery element is its weakness. MaxTul, the Kings of chemistry, are, of course, perfect and perfectly cast, but their romance thread is more a distraction than an addition. Still, I could watch them make-out the phonebook. Watch along here.Ā
Tumblr media
Seven Days
Japan 2015 greyĀ
AKA Seven Days: Monday-Thursday AND Seven Days: Friday-Sunday Japan
Seryou kinda counts as the pursuer, but the dynamic is very very weak in this one. Still the way he asks to use Yuzuru’s first name (so CHEEKY) and the way he says ā€œsenpaiā€ in SUCH a cute way makes me so happy. And Yuzuru is NOTHING is not indulgent, it kinda defines his character. I mean he just LETS him call him by his FIRST name... right away.
Never doubt my ability to recommend this show. One of the best live action yaois ever made, with perfectly structured angst, fantastic characters and acting, and no problematic tropes (rare in Japanese BL). The leads have excellent chemistry although it’s low heat there’s still some really cute mutual kisses.Ā
Just Taiwan
Tumblr media
HIStory 2: Crossing the Line
2018 VikiĀ
Seme uke is VERY weak with this one but the younger character is certainly the pursuer. It’s SO GOOD.Ā
Lin Pei Yu directs this is a sports romance (volleyball) with a good boy/bad boy pairing, and mu favorite of the HIStory franchise. There is no clear seme/uke. Ostensibly it's high school set but Taiwan doesn't care about age appropriate actors. It's a very soft sweet romance with some ridiculously easily overcome conflict. There's great kisses but it's medium heat. The side dishes are the stepbrother trope but they’re very tame, and there’s no other triggers. It's not just my favorite of the franchise, it’s one of my favorite BLs with a perfect happy ending.
Tumblr media
Kiseki: Dear to Me
2023 Gaga
The mains are a major age gap, but I always forget because they def don't look it. Also, Taiwan, so very weak seme/uke. Still there is age gap, he's in high school and our gangster is out of college and in the workplace.
The plot is totally ridiculous and slightly unhinged, but that’s normal for Taiwan. It involves all the tropes under a very casual framework of gay mafia gangs + food = love. Absolutely every character is queer. There’s a gum-ball machine of cameos, elder gay rep, great chemistry from all pairs, and a KILLER side couple. As a result Kiseki is a poster child for Taiwanese BL, and I happen to love Taiwanese BL. Bonus? They also managed to END IT WELL, which we cannot expect from Taiwan.
(Triggers for knife play, child abuse, lingering trauma.)
Tumblr media
Unknown
2024 YouTube
Unknown is a wonderful BL with a pitch perfect portrayal of long term pining, age gap, and the stepbrothers trope. The acting and chemistry are ON POINT (especially from the leads) which made the resulting characters very believable. When it dwells in intimate family drama, it's stunning. It's slightly less successful when it leaves the home and goes gritty. Still, those are mere quibbles. This is an excellent show, one of Taiwan' s best.
As you see above I mostly had to take you to Japan and Thailand for this one. Considering your preferences try Japan first, it's closer in DNA to Taiwanese stuff, but it won't go as high heat. If you want the heat, you'll need to try the Thai stuff (or the ones from Taiwan you haven't seen). I would start with Lovely Writer.
Okay I think I have given you enough and, unless I miss my guess, I may have tempted you to try some Japanese BL.
Comes to the weirder (and weird hair) side. We have pancakes.
Tumblr media
Yeah I think you should watch Old Fashion Cupcake.
EVERYONE SHOULD WATCH OLD FASHION CUPCAKE!!!

What was the prince/princess position during the Qing Dynasty?
During Ruyi's series I noticed how arrogant Jingse was with the concubines and thought she was better than her brothers precisely because she was a legitimate princess and the oldest among them all. I know all princes are supposed to refer to their father's concubines as "mother." This left me intrigued, even though I know this was just for the plot, I can believe that in real life many princesses/princes were like this because of their mothers' position.
Jingse's arrogance is based on a system called di-shu which is a hierarchy between the children born of official wives (di) vs. children born of concubines (shu). See the linked Wikipedia for details, but for reference, of the children who have screentime in the drama, the hierarchy would likely be:
Yonglian (as the eldest di son, whose mother is the official wife, actually the second son)
(Yongcong, second di son, actually seventh son, mother is the official wife)
Jingse (as the eldest di daughter, whose mother is the official wife, actually the third daughter - first and second all died young)
Yongji (as a di son, whose mother was also the official wife when he was born, but she was the second wife, who is considered subordinate to the first, actually twelfth son)
(Yongjing - thirteenth son, Jingsi - fifth daughter, mother is the second wife)
Yonghuang (eldest son, but still considered lower than sons born of official wives because his mother was a concubine. Yonghuang's position is specified a shuzhangzi 庶长子 (aka eldest son whose mother is a concubine, which is a very precarious position as technically he should be ranked on top but can't be because of his mother's position, but being the eldest he is a threat to Yonglian's position which is why Langhua hates him so much.)
Other princes according to order of birth*
Other princesses according to order of birth*
*but also sometimes according to the prestige of/amount of favour enjoyed by their mothers
In Legend of Zhen Huan, the empress' entire villian backstory was rooted in di-shu. A lot of dramas like Story of Minglan, The Sword and the Brocade revolves around the fate of unfavoured shu daughters where a lot of the angst/conflict stems from their inferior position in the household.
In terms of choosing an heir/successor, the three main debates are between choosing the di son ē«‹å«”, the eldest son 立长, or the most talented 立蓤. Of course, the perfect choice would be the eldest di son who hopefully would also be talented.
Qianlong due to his (in drama) backstory of his mother being a palace maid has a big hang up regarding the di-shu positions of his children. For a long time he was only in favour of making his di sons successors, and part of the conflict between him and Ruyi later was because Qianlong still wanted to make Yongji his successor despite him being not that suited for the position and Ruyi clearly not wanting him to inherit the throne.
When he chooses Yongqi it was a case of choosing for talent. Although, at the time, Yongqi is also technically the eldest since Yonghuang, Yonglian, Yongzhang have all died and Yongcheng has been disinherited/adopted out.
By the time he choose Yongyan I guess he didn't have that many choices left:
Yonghuang, Yonglian, Yongzhang, Yongqi, Yongcong - dead
Yongcheng - adopted out
Yongrong - probably tainted by association to Luyun and Yongzhang
Yongxuan & Yongxing - tained by association to Yuyan and Yongcheng
Yongji - probably also dead by then
Yongyan
Yonglin - younger than Yongyan so between the two of them obvious Yongyan was the one
For someone who had 17 sons, he really didn't have that many choices for a successor ĀÆ\_(惄)_/ĀÆ

11, and please feel free to list more than one :)))))))
SO. All but one of the asks I've gotten so far include 11, which is very funny. I suspect this has something to do with my loud and proud enjoyment of several taboo setups, such as stepsiblings/pseudoincest. And I wanted to take this opportunity to write about some of those, I really did. I thought I was finally going to write about my treasured mess, Ye Xingsi and Fu Yongjie. But here's the thing: taboo is different from forbidden, and the more I thought about it the less it fit. The forbiddenness in that relationship isn't the primary or even the secondary issue. And instead of writing a whole essay on why they and most other pseudoincest pairs aren't doing "forbidden love" as a primary trope, I sigh and turn my gaze to other pairs.
Forbidden Love, to me, has to involve at least one of two things as a primary obstacle: unyielding social/familial barriers, or deep internal guilt. It's one of several tropes on the list that plays a little different for gay ships, because in so many contexts just the fact of being a same-sex couple makes it a forbidden love. Most BLs let the social barriers soften pretty quickly, if they're present at all, and very few have the characters really wrangling with guilt (shame is slightly more common, but that's another essay I'm not going to write right now.) However, we do have a few stellar examples.
Pat and Pran, Bad Buddy
Tumblr media
Obvious when you think about it. Pran's mother explicitly says that she'd accept Pran being with anyone except Pat (or Pat's sister.) From Pran's secret, agonized pining to them sneaking into each other's rooms years later, their whole relationship is conducted under the understanding that their parents cannot and will not accept it. A lot of Bad Buddy's power comes from the way it transmutes familial homophobia, letting queer viewers who live under that same degree of forbiddenness and secrecy see their experiences reflected without having to sit through on-screen homophobia.
In and Wang, 180 Degree Longitude Passes Through Us
Tumblr media
Here's the other side of forbidden love, one that's primarily about internal guilt. The attraction between In and Wang is deeply triangulated on the ghost of Wang's father, but that doesn't mean it isn't genuine. Here's a love that In understands to be forbidden in every aspect: by age, by prior bonds, by his own enduring reluctance to accept his desire for men. Inthawut's guilt is a millstone in every moment between them, and in the end it sinks any possibility of a longer relationship. Now, is it better for both of them that it went that way? Almost certainly. But it's still a relationship saturated with guilt and the consciousness on In's side that this is and must be forbidden. And it constantly calls up the echo of In's past relationship to Siam which, without the same weight of guilt, might have taken beautiful flight.
And I don't want to end without a nod to a few historical ships, where the characters really are restrained by the simple fact of being gay in a hostile society:
Tian and Jiu, Khun Chai
Tumblr media
Eeang Peung and Maey, I Feel You Linger in the Air
Tumblr media
Jom and Yai, I Feel You Linger in the Air

EUNBIN / GO-TO PLAYLIST
happy - day 6 wing wing - hyukoh dressed in a black skirt - kim hyunchul sun or suck - woodz nan chun - se soneon every second - mina okabe ģ²ģ¶˜ė§Œķ™” - lee mujin sudden shower - eclipse (byun woo seok) small girl - lee yongji ģ‚¬ėž‘ķ–ˆė‚˜ė“ - yoon dohyun
to be quite honest, eunbin doesn't have a typical "music taste". she doesn't really nitpick over genres, and tends to have the same playlist playing over and over again until she finally gets herself into creating more songs.
i will say as of late, she's listening to a lot more "band" sounds, which is the first few songs. she really enjoys day 6, hyukoh, and se soneon (was pretty sad when se soneon decided to go separate ways / hiatus). but these songs are usually what she's listening to when her headphones are plugged in and she's going from one spot to the next.
as for oldies, she's a huuuuge oldies fan. so, you'll have her listening to kim hyunchul, lee seungcheol, yoon dohyun, and yoon jongshin quite often. in fact, these tend to be the songs she sings at nrb, when she's just belting songs one after another after a few rounds of soju (to be honest, she's the type that doesn't let go of the mic when she's at nrb). sometimes, you'll have her crying by the end... does she know why she's crying? no, but regardless, these songs are usually her 18.
she tends to listen to "indie" (i say this loosely) when forced to pick a genre. she likes to listen to random western artists that aren't necessarily popular but popular in korea (ex: anne marie). lately, she's discovered mina okabe, and she has her songs on loop. similarly on a domestic front, she likes lee mujin as she likes the singer/songwriter image. in fact, if she'd ever be allowed to go solo, this would probably be her inspo.
lee yongji - i have this song on here only because it tends to just shed light on the type of person eunbin is. she's never felt pretty and out of place, and doesn't necessarily think love is in the cards for her. so, she resonates with the lyrics of this song and that's initially what drew her to it.
lastly, the eclipse / lovely runner ost - blame her or blame someone else, but in the case of her filming for that drama - she fell for her co-star (typical eunbin lol) but she literally liked him so much bc she was immersed in it. and what do you get? you get a girl who lives vicariously through the scenes she replays from the drama through that song (poor girl really thought boy was singing to her, when in reality it wasn't that at all.)

Researchers develop solid-state thermal transistor for better heat management
A team of researchers from UCLA has unveiled a first-of-its-kind stable and fully solid-state thermal transistor that uses an electric field to control a semiconductor device's heat movement. The group's study, published in Science, details how the device works and its potential applications. With top speed and performance, the transistor could open new frontiers in heat management of computer chips through an atomic-level design and molecular engineering. The advance could also further the understanding of how heat is regulated in the human body. "The precision control of how heat flows through materials has been a long-held but elusive dream for physicists and engineers," said the study's co-author Yongjie Hu, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering. "This new design principle takes a big leap toward that, as it manages the heat movement with the on-off switching of an electric field, just like how it has been done with electrical transistors for decades."
