Yotasuke: the outpouring of love and attention that you reject bc you never got accustomed to it little by little.

And the only kind of love and affection you hardly ever understood and felt you attracted, was the smothering and patronizing kind.

&

Hashida: the love you get by being helpful and trying your best, the terror of thinking you're not good enough.

Not knowing who you are. But knowing you absolutely don't want to let anyone down. Wanting to cling to one thing, you want to define you, but finding it very bitter because you feel the results don't match.

Yotasuke being defined by the one thing he's told he's good at because he does it all the time and happens to be seen as gifted at it: art

Hashida being told he's good at everything and knows everything: only wants to be defined by art, but can't seem to find what he wants in it, because he sees a murky reflection of the self that he suppresses.
