Having to go through the same cycle every few days of someone being murdered, investigating the bodies of your classmates, unraveling the world's most complex murder schemes and sending another one of your classmates and friends to their gorey death

Be trauma flashbanged every few days with memories that a) you and your classmates were being hunted for sport, b) there was a funeral held for all of you, c) meteors were coming down at the same rate that killed the dinosaurs, d) the outside world has been fucking obliterated, e) youre all on a space ship and are possibly the only survivors of humanity, and f) one of your classmates that has been sus as hell was an underling of the girl that started the end of the world

Cool okay that's a lot to process, but THEN while your friend is destroying the space ship you're all on -- which will 100% result in everyone dying -- you find history books that don't add up with your memories, and THEN youre thrown into another trial to clear the name of your friend who was already executed

And THEN in that trial the mastermind, who was probably the girl you suspected the LEAST, tells you that NOTHING is real, everything was scripted, and you're not even a real person which is almost worse than the world being destroyed

this is giving me the stupid but funny idea of the project eden gang all having to deal with main cast minis, makoto (and komaeda if we're adding not thh minis) is the only person who liked the friendship hope speech at the end of chapter one

Alright yes, Mini THH P:EG AU, because I have no self-control.

The funniest person to give Makoto to would be Mark. I find that simply adorable and funny. My first thought for Makoto was Desmond, because I was imagining an exchange where the Diana speech happens, Makoto goes, "Wait, she's right!", and Desmond very quietly answers, "No, no she's not, that was cringe..."

I'm not sure whether to sort this by talent or Rule of Funny, but let's do this.

Damon- There is a certain appeal to sticking him with Makoto. While Makoto tries to be optimistic, Damon is often shutting that down. He finds him naive. Plus, he would deeply resent being given a "lucky student" while other people get "actual" Ultimates. For a while, he's annoyed whenever Makoto says or does anything.

But Makoto's a hard person to ignore for long– both on the virtue of his skills at getting close to people, and just based on the fact that Damon is tasked with taking care of him and he's still tiny, clumsy Makoto who will get very, very lost somewhere if Damon ignores him.

Like, Makoto tries to change Damon's outlook, Damon decides to ignore him, and then several hours later it occurs to him that he hasn't heard from Makoto in a while and he has to search everywhere. Finds him deep in the kitchen trashcan, shaking and covered in food. Damon reacts to this a little like an older sibling who accidentally got the younger sibling hurt and needs them not to tell Mom; a lot of, "Hey, you're okay, shh, you're fine. Here, let's wash that off." He has no choice but to engage with Makoto. Any amount of "Just pretend he's not there" will result in another scare like that. At least once, he finds Makoto treading water in the basement, close to drowning.

Also, the mini I'm giving Kai makes this all the better.

Cassidy- CASSIDY GETS TAKA, for sure. Her being a communist makes for such fun dynamics. He'd enjoy her spirit while disagreeing with aspects of her conduct. And honestly, I think they'd have more ideologically in common than not. Which is great, because their vibes are so different.

Desmond- I think I'll give him Mukuro. Works for talent, and their vibes are different enough. He'll be trying to bring her out of her shell, and just generally being friendly in the face of her overall stoic and pragmatic demeanor. I think they'd be fun. I'm imagining, after Diana's speech, Mukuro is like, "Yikes," and Desmond shushes her.

Diana- Super valid option for Junko, especially given her unsuccessful hope speech. But she's getting Celeste instead. I enjoy the idea of, after Diana tries to encourage everyone and fails, Celeste being the only one for her to talk to. Like, "If you do not adapt, you will die here." Poor Diana's just trying to be a person, and Celeste is there like, "Fortify. Do not let them get to you like this or see you like this ever again."

It's kind of sweet. They genuinely care about each other.

Eloise- Sakura would be great for her. They'd really study each other's martial arts. Eloise is shy (with a quiet strength to her when necessary), and I think Sakura's sort of sage, intimidating presence (even in miniature) would be a cool vibe contrast.

Eva- The exact worst option for her would be Toko. Absolutely not. It's tempting to give her Hina, since I think a kind jock encounter would be cool for her, but I'm not going that route.

I think Chihiro would be pretty good. They've both had a lot of negative social experiences in school, but Chihiro hasn't stopped being receptive to friendship in the way Eva has. Plus, they can both relate to hiding aspects of themselves in an attempt to be safe. Chihiro would be crying over stuff Eva says and does, and I think Eva would be pretty impatient about it. Mainly because Chihiro reminds her of herself, but in the exact way she doesn't want to be seen: vulnerable. Weak. The grudging way she cares for Chihiro speaks to how she feels about her past self, who let people's behavior get to her.

Grace- She's getting Hina, and I imagine she has some shades of "Aren't you tired of being nice?" about it. She likes her, but she also sees Hina's pleasant demeanor and is like "You know you don't have to do that, right?". I think this could be pretty cute. Hina would be startled and alarmed when Grace attacks Tozu, but also she supports it 100%.

Ingrid- She gets Hifumi, and he keeps asking her for a cool sword. I think she'd be a good influence on him. She's someone no one likes to disappoint.

Jean- Giving him Leon. No insights there; the dynamic is barely different than when I gave Leon to Nekomaru.

Jett- Giving him Mondo is pretty on-the-nose, but I'm alright with that. I can see him frequently telling Mondo, "Dude, relax," in a really easygoing way. Plus, they talk a lot about engines or something.

Kai- Definitely Junko. Sensitive influencer and edgy supermodel. She makes him cry. But also they kinda get along. I'm just picturing them both standing in front of their bathroom mirror, doing their makeup and chatting. And Damon is rooming with them, which means Makoto is rooming with them. That's fun. Junko and Makoto hanging out.

Mark- I'm giving him Sayaka, because it's all the hilarity of giving him Makoto, while keeping him with someone musically talented. I like to imagine Mark shuffling up to someone like, "My mini wants to talk to your mini..." Sayaka being so extroverted would be a fun fit for him.

Toshiko- She gets Byakuya. Talent-wise, Wenona would get Byakuya, but there's not as much to play with there. Toshiko would be able to call his bluff on all the tsundere behavior (exclusively in private; she's not blowing up his spot) while conducting herself in a way that wouldn't embarrass him. It occurs to me that this is basically giving Byakuya a little sister who ships Naegami, and I love it.

Ulysses- He gets Toko. Because he can't smell, he's likely very vigilant about regular bath times, so he's making sure she's taken care of even when she doesn't make time to take care of herself. (He's not going to wash her himself, but if he draws water in the sink basin and leaves her there for a certain length of time, she's gotta do something. It's not like she has her writing stuff, in there.) Plus, vibe-wise, I think they'd really get along.

Wenona- She gets Yasuhiro. They both like money, but she's just worlds better at it than he is. His kinds of money-making schemes are beneath her dignity, and she'd have no problem saying so. Plus, they're both pretty un-trusting people, but again, she has more poise about it. They definitely have different areas of expertise, and it would be cool to have them share insights with each other. The vibe for this pairing is that she's her cool self and he comes across as a little caricature of all her thoughts and feelings.

Wolfgang- He gets Kyoko, and Damon hates it. (In this scenario, maybe Kyoko doesn't forget her talent.) She and Wolfgang get along pretty well, though she does warn Wolfgang when she believes his actions will backfire. And he doesn't like letting her wander off, which she finds annoying. But when she asks him to go somewhere and/or let her see something, he does. (If Wolfgang dies, Damon will gladly volunteer to take Kyoko.)

Did Yakumo have some sort of connection to this temple? Perhaps that was why he didn't want to talk about it. It's cold though. She hadn't noticed while walking, but the wind was biting when she stood here alone like this. Why did she have to wait here by herself? Anger rose within her as she waited. 'Hurry back!' Unable to keep in her anger, Haruka picked up a rock at her feet and threw it towards the direction Yakumo had walked. 'Ouch!'

"So, you picked up some trouble because you were blinded by money?" Yakumo threw a cold gaze at Haruka. "It's not like that." "But you just said that there was a reward involved. Turns out you're pretty calculative yourself." "Isn't it you that's aaaalways interested in money!?" said Haruka in an angry, high-pitched tone. Yakumo had treated her as if she were a slave for money. "Don't get worked up." "I'm not worked up. I won't ask for your help anymore. Thanks."

"Just kidding-" said Yakumo. His voice was clearly different from before. The intonation sounded like he was fooling around. "Eh?" Ishii hesitantly opened his eyes and saw Yakumo standing there with a thin smile. "Sorry. I was just messing with you guys a little. I'm fine," said Yakumo nonchalantly. Finally, Ishii grasped the situation. "Idiot!" Haruka shouted as she approached Yakumo, landing a punch onto his shoulder. Ishii normally would've tried to intervene, but right now he had no intention of doing so.

'Oi. Where to next?' interrupted Gotou. 'Please head along this road.' 'Which road?' 'Just straight ahead. 'Straight ahead? There's no road here.' 'There is.' Haruka pointed with her finger. Though it was only wide enough for one car to pass, there was a road there. 'That's a road?' Gotou cocked his head. She knew it was just that he wasn't used to it, but she felt like she was being made fun of. 'Please just go!'

She ended up speaking in an irritated tone. 'Y-yes,' replied Gotou, sounding a bit afraid.

"Did you make these?" "Um, together with Makoto-san...?' Why did I decide to call it a collaborative work when I could have said I made it myself? Before that, Makoto-san, I'm sorry that I took the liberty to use your name. Yakumo opened the wrapper and was about to put his hand on the chocolate when there was the sound of a knock and the door opened. "Hello." The one who appeared was, no joke, Makoto "Ma-Makoto-san!"

Tutoring

"This is so effin' stupid." Ryuji grumbled as he made his way to Akira and Ann's classroom after the day had ended. He burst open the door and stormed up to his friends.

"This is complete bullshit!" The duo's attention snapped to Ryuji.

"What's wrong?" Akira cocked his head slightly.

"Ugh! I'm being forced to get a tutor because my grades are too low! The sucks!" Ryuji plopped down on a desk, wallowing in self pity. Ann snorted in response,

"I had no idea your grades were THAT bad. Maybe it'll be good for you." Ryuji scrunched up his face.

"Hell no! This is just effing stupid." Akira sighed at his friend.

"When and where are you supposed to go?" Ryuji cursed.

"Uh now. In the library. There's no way I'm doin' that shit." Akira raised a brow.

"Really? What do you think Makoto will do when she finds out?" Ann laughed.

"Oooh man. When she finds out just how bad your grades are, and that you ditched tutoring, she's gonna be sooo mad." Ryuji sighed and stood up.

"Screw you guys. Fine, I'm goin'." The blonde boy walked to the library, grumbling the whole way. When he opened the door there were only a few people there. Crap, how was he supposed to know who his tutor was? There was no way in hell he'd ask. Awkwardly scratching the back of his head, Ryuji glanced around the room. Who here looked smart? A cute girl was walking to the door, bringing Ryuji back to reality.

"Oh, uh, sorry." He said, getting out of her way, thinking she was trying to leave.

"Oh no, you're okay. I came over to talk to you, actually. You're Ryuji Sakamoto, yeah?" Once again scratching the back of his head, Ryuji nodded.

"Okay cool! I'm pretty sure you came here looking for me." The girl smiled at him, and his jaw dropped.

"No way, you?! You're-" the girl gently took hold of his arm, leading him away from the people who had started staring.

"Yep, me." She lowered her voice, whispering to him. "I'm guessing that you don't want the whole school knowing that you're being tutored. I was told that you were really against it." Ryuji blushed awkwardly. Great, so this cute girl knew he was stupid, and probably already hated him. She led him to the stairs, taking him to the roof.

"Uh, you know the roof door is locked right? It's off limits or somethin'."

You nod, taking out the key.

"Oh I know, but I got permission to come up here to tutor you."

Ryuji's eyes widened.

"But why would you do that?" You only shrugged.

"Well I knew you weren't really on board with the idea of tutoring, so I... I figured you might do it if you were somewhere people from school wouldn't be able to see you. I'm sorry... I didn't mean to make you feel awkward I just thought-" Ryuji cut off your rambling.

"I'm just a stupid no good guy. Why would you go through all this trouble when you're already gonna have to tutor me?" You offered an understanding smile.

"Because I know who you are. I know about how you got a bad rap just because of your temper. And I want you to prove to yourself that you're a good, capable, person. You're not stupid, you've just never had the right person to teach you." Ryuji felt his face heat up. Who the heck is this girl? People usually don't spare him so much as a glance, but now this girl he'd never met before made him feel... validated?He sighed quietly.

"I guess I'll give this a shot. Only cuz you went to all this trouble."

The tutoring session went well, and so did the next, and the one after that, and so forth. Ryuji actually started somewhat enjoying the tutoring, and you two became good friends. He felt like he did pretty well on midterms and was really excited to tell you. You two had already scheduled to meet like normal, just to talk about how Ryuji did on the exams. He opened the door to the roof and you were already sitting there waiting. The blonde ran up to you like an excited puppy.

"(Y/n)! I think I did okay, I kinda felt like I knew what I was doing!" He brought you into a tight hug, picked you up and spun you around.

You giggled as he spun around. Setting you back on your feet he grabbed you shoulders and shook you.

"I'm so happy I could- I could just kiss you!" Pink dusted both of your faces as his words hit you, and he realized what he said.

"O-oh I mean um... I didn't mean to say that haha... I'm just really excited and-" You shushed and with a laugh.

"I'll make you a deal. Let me start this out by saying that I'm confident in how you did. When the grades are posted, if you marked in the average category, you can kiss me. I mean, um, unless you were joking when you said that, then we can just-" Ryuji interrupts you, a wide smile and blush ever present on his face.

"Deal. And if I got in average I'm gonna take you on a date. If you're cool with that." The two of you shook hands smiling.

"Deal."

Ryuji stuffed his phone into his pocket with a huff. Mona could stuff it. Stupid cat. He was sure he did well... At least he hoped he did. Even without the extra motivation he had just been given, he wanted to make you proud. You were pretty hard on yourself when you couldn't get him to understand, and he knew you'd blame yourself if he didn't rank average. All he could do now was wait for the grades to be posted, and wait he did.

After going through every possible scenario in his head, it was finally time for grades to be posted. Before he even got through the crowd to see his rank, Ryuji got a text.

6:55 (Y/n): Are you at the school yet?

6:55 Ryuji: yeah, I was heading to check my grade

6:56 (Y/n): Okay, check it then meet me on the roof. And don't even try to get into your head and psych yourself out before you see it.

Stuffing his phone back into his pocket, Ryuji pushed his way to the board. Finally he found his name, a wide grin spreading over his face. He was three away from being right in the middle of all the average ranking kids. He'd made it, and you'd already seen his grade. Akira was suddenly next to him, a gentle smile on his face.

"Looks like you did it. Go get her, man." Ryuji spun to face his friend, bouncing excitedly.

"Hell yeah, man! I did it! I gotta go, she's waiting for me!" The blonde took off, running up the stairs to the roof. Swigging the door open, his gaze met yours. Ryuji took a second to try and compose himself.

"Hey." He greeted, trying to sound like he hadn't just booked it up here. You laughed standing to meet him.

"Hey yourself." Now that you were in front of each other, silence fell.

After staring at him for a few moments, you cleared your throat.

"If I remember correctly, we made a deal." Ryuji nodded, color coating his cheeks.

"Y-yeah we did. Just so you know, I haven't really done this before. I'm kinda an idiot, but you know that." You placed a hand on his cheek, giggling slightly.

"How many times do I have to tell you? You're not an idiot." You laced you hands behind his neck, pulling him closer. You could feel his heart pounding against your chest. Taking a deep breath, Ryuji cupped your cheek.

"I'm just gonna do it." Without giving you a chance to respond, Ryuji crashed his lips into yours.

Your lips moved in sync after the somewhat sloppy start. He hugged you close as the kiss progressed. Your hands found themselves toying with the ends of his hair. Finally the need for air came, and you two parted, heads spinning. You smiled at each other as you caught your breathe.

"Okay so, what do I get if I rank above average?" You laughed at his question, hiding your blushing face in his chest.

What IS Affluent Progeny as a Talent™️ even!?

I keep mulling it over and every Talent I can possibly think of is like, a measurable skill, y'know? Baseball Star, Pop Idol (i.e. idol-specific skills), Programmer, Biker Gang Leader, Moral Compass, Doujin Author, Gambler, Martial Artist, Soldier, Detective, Swimmer, Fortune Teller, like...! They are all irrefutably some kind of skill to be done, with the exception of Luckster.

The Luckster I can forgive strictly because the entire point of the title is that the holder is otherwise unremarkable in every way. Makoto's Just Some Guy Who Got Lucky. Like that's the Point. He's not SUPPOSED to be Talented by Hope's Peak's definition.

Even in the other games:

In SDR2 we've got Imposter, Cook, Photographer, Swordswoman, Traditional Dancer, Musician, Nurse, Team Manager, Breeder, Gamer, Mechanic, Gymnast, Yakuza, and Princess with the exception of once again the Luckster and Hajime (a nobody).

In V3 we've got Adventurer(/Survivor), Pianist, Tennis Pro, Maid, Artist, Aikido Master, Anthropologist, Inventor, Entomologist, Supreme Leader (Different From Princess imo), Astronaut, Assassin, Magician, Cosplayer, and Detective with the exception of Robot because Audience Insert Gimmick Or Whatever.

So what's up with the Affluent Progeny???

Literally like it's not a Talent really, because it it's core the dictionary interpretation of an "affluent progeny" is literally just like. A "child of wealth." Even if he did "win" the name of Togami head of household through a battle royale or whatever (if you accept DR:T as a Thing), that's not how inheritance works and that doesn't turn inheritance into a measurable skill, y'know?

So it's like.

Out of all the Talents, this one is fake as hell??? Like. It's a Talent in name only, almost like it was bought out by the Togami family for the Prestige Points to have a Talent that only they can have, and making it seem that much more like an actual skill by having their weird contest thing to validate its existence or whatever?

Genuinely like I blame @duhhtheyellowrose for this 100% for getting me thinking about the actual legitimate semantics of it but like. My turn to Pepe Sylvia:

It's a title the Togami family made up and paid Hope's Peak exorbitant amounts of money to make real for the Prestige because They Are The Togami Family, of course they'd be Ultimate just by virtue of Being A (fucking) Togami.

What would HAPPEN? if a genuinely talentless person just had the pressure of Talent slapped on them for literally no reason. Not even like the Luckster, because at least they KNOW they're Normal outside of like. Luck.

Sojiro: (Places a Ren's Drink Down on the Table in Front of Him) One cup of hot coffee on the house.

Ren: (Carefully Picks Up his Cup and Takes a Sip of the Drink Sojiro Made For Letting Out a Relaxed Sigh) Another perfect cup of coffee to a crappy morning........ (Looks Up at Sojiro) How you do it, Sojiro?

Sojiro: I don't know. I've tasted the coffee you made for you plenty of times in the past and I say their fantastic in their in own right.

I love all of these statements from him because they reinforce and validate all of what I've said about Celestia over the years, stuff that's more widespread among fans now but used to not be and led to some egregious misunderstandings of the character. Going point by point:

1. From Dengeki: Kodaka confirms that Taeko Yasuhiro is not a clever, strategic mastermind that she tries to make herself out to be as Celeste: all her victories came from her luck-based talent and she feels embarrassed about it, and jealous of Makoto for having a luck-based talent he can be open and honest about and unburdened by. He also states similarly she "wasn't able to be a complete villain": signs of a conscience clearly slipped through especially at the end where she gave the key to Alter-Ego back and didn't sell out his existence to Monokuma, implied more vulnerable reasons to her villainy than just greed, and sincerely wished her classmates well and that they could meet in another life. She genuinely attempted to play a cold, murdering sociopath, but never fully became it no matter how hard she tried.

2. From Twitter: Alternatively, the last part can translate to "And she's fascinating", which reinforces my view that she's one of the most interesting characters in the game since she herself is a mystery you have to work at uncovering much like Kyoko, Byakuya and Junko.

3. From Twitter: Related to the above. Kodaka liking Celeste's FTEs the most goes hand in hand with "you're supposed to try uncovering the mystery that is Celeste", sifting through the truth and the lies until you determine what kind of sad, insecure person Taeko Yasuhiro is.

4. From Twitter: Again related to the above, as the radio drama in question was fully voice-acted FTEs. Kodaka is saying that the nuances in the VA's delivery increased the intrigue.

5. From Twitter: Talking about Danganronpa the Animation and commenting how well it shows Byakuya, Kyoko and Celeste working off one another with their similar yet different personalities. Also, I will shamelessly take it as an endorsement of any ships with them.

6. From Twitter: Referring to this, where the lyrics paint a more vulnerable picture of Celeste.

7, 8, 9. From Twitter: Birthday messages from Celeste, displaying her good and bad traits.

10. From Bsky.Social: He says that Celeste wants to "create a world similar to Interview With a Vampire" for herself. The phrasing validates my read on Celeste's ultimate motivation: she is scared and miserable living in the world as Taeko Yasuhiro so she wants to create a world where she can live as Celestia Ludenburg (the European castle). She wants an escape from reality, a full-on retreat into delusions and lies. It's so twisted and tragic and I love her for it.

Last time, Makoto wanted to make up for what happened at the BBQ where he outed Madoka, and eventually had a really touching conversation with them in the park. Kakeru bonded more with Hasegawa, and had a meaningful conversation with his rival at a makeup tutorial. The focus of the episode was on Mika feeling like the family takes her for granted, and how the misogyny of her era kept her out of the workforce and pursuing a career in publishing that she was excited about. The family came together and got Mika tickets for her favorite boy band in a scene that made me cry.

It's a real relief to see Kakeru hanging around the family again.

Already getting emotional about Kakeru finding a school he wants to attend and recommitting to his high school degree. The trust he has in his mom and sister means so much to me.

That they're also willing to worry about the things that made Kakeru flee school with Makoto is a sign of how far he's come.

Oh fuck I forgot about the old creep that got moved to their team. He's awful. I like him as a character in this show. Makoto was trained by men like him, and it means a lot that he's turning away from that.

Aww the girls loved Kakeru's smile.

Well, Makoto finally got invited to lunch, but at what cost?

Okay, it's funny that they all got his standard lunch.

Makoto, what did I say about making stuff up. This conversation was so awkward and off-base, but he's sorta right? Great comedy with Maki and Moe.

Incredible editing to go from Makoto flubbing with Kakeru, to having a good dad conversation about how Madoka is allowed to make his own choices and choose Daichi, to Makoto realizing again how he's taken Mika for granted.

28,000 yen for two tickets in the modern era is not terrible.

Oh, Mika doesn't seem happy about the price for the tickets.

This bra scene was also fantastic. I wanna see how shocking this old man into submission goes.

I do love this response to being asked about his sexuality. "I'm not sure who I might like yet," is a valid response. I like that Hasegawa framed this as an appreciation for Kakeru's strength or character because Hasegawa usually caves to peer pressure.

Don't let me down, Hasegawa!

I totally get Mika, but I'm glad that Makoto insisted that she still use the tickets and enjoy herself. This works well from what Igarashi said earlier, and it's something Makoto has needed to say for a long time.

Oh no. They're about to miss the hint that Kakeru isn't dating snyone.

Oof, there it is.

That's the big part about being queer that this show understands: the misplaced assumptions about you. Hasegawa did well earlier, as did the girls, because they responded to his energy. The girls saw that Kakeru didn't want to talk about the baseball club and left it alone. Hasegawa asked a direct question, accepted Kakeru's answer, and gave genuine appreciation for what that answer confirmed for him. His parents really mean well when they say they'll support whoever he likes, but they assumed he liked someone at all. Back in my Koisenu Futari feels. This also works well with the work stuff, where they're going to torment that old man with his own presumptions.

If there is one useful bit of advice Byakuya gave Makoto, it's that, to paraphrase, "it's a mistake to assume everyone else thinks like you". Fandoms could learn from this, and not assume that "everyone else universally loves and hates the same things we do." Fandoms could learn that other people might really, seriously disagree with them, without insisting that "all stories must be written our way, or they need to be 'fixed'."

You're SO right.

That last sentence in your Ask especially speaks to me. What grinds my gears lately is people reflexively calling something "bad writing"/"problems with the writing"/"flaws in writing" when what they REALLY mean "This wasn't done in a manner that suits my personal taste." Not everything someone dislikes is automatically "bad writing." (A subgenre of this is people confidently assuming they know what the creators of a work thought/felt about their decisions without any actual evidence to back up their assumptions. But hey—at least they're trying to interpret underlying intent, so that's something!)

For example: Disliking someone's characterization is NOT "flawed writing." You didn't like that Korekiyo turned out to be a creepy-ass incest freak? Fair enough! Makes sense. But that doesn't mean the writing of his character was BAD; it means you didn't like it. And that's totally fine! Your opinion is, of course, 100% valid!

I suppose that, as a writer myself, I'm probably just feeling defensive of other writers. But even though liking something or calling it "bad writing" can all be boiled down to opinions, I still feel like there's a real distinction between them. If you find the dialogue in something unbelievable/awkward/out of character? You could say that's bad writing. If you believe there's a plot hole in the narrative? You could argue that's bad writing. However, if you—to cite a recently discussed example—didn't like the usage of brainwashing in DR3, even after you learned about the backup evidence? That doesn't mean it was "bad writing"; you just didn't like it for other reasons.

I'm not sure if I'm being clear about this, and I think I kind of went off on a rant... feel free to ignore. :P

Point is that writers work really hard to produce what they do, it takes a shit-ton of time—typically far more than visual arts—and maybe don't reflexively say they suck when you simply dislike a choice. :P

makoto would much rather have a lover who expresses his love through exclusively actions, rather than having one that expresses it exclusively through words.

even if you're a man of few words, it doesn't matter much to him, because he still feels cared for and loved. it'd be a different situation if you never did anything to show your love for him, because he'd just feel forgotten and neglected in that case.

but because you do show it, he picks up on it, and acknowledges that how you express love is different from how others express it. and he accepts that!

It isn't expressed in the same ways (usually; they don't growl anymore, but when Byakuya is trying to monopolize Makoto and someone else comes up to bother them, he might subconsciously bend his knees a little as if preparing to spring), but in general, a lot of the sharp edges of aggression and defensiveness are sticking around.

The basic holdovers from being undead are:

Jumpiness. They had a lot of skirmishes when they were undead, and long after the cure they remain hypervigilant of anyone being behind them. Some of them take to standing with their back against a wall, but most of them just stand normally and find themselves looking around more than usual.

For lack of a better phrase, oral fixation. Biting was a huge part of how they interacted with the world and expressed themselves before, and while they don't have quite the same level of need-to-bite, they need to do something. Makoto and Nagito (who continue to be a little caretaker-y for a bit after) take to carrying gum, mints, or hard candy for them to chew. Mikan develops a habit of chewing her hair. Leon chews toothpicks, to look cool, but he does end up chewing them practically to a pulp. Some of them (Ibuki) do just still bite people.

They're more in touch with their emotions. Before the "disease", Byakuya was pretty in-denial about liking Makoto. His disposition toward Makoto was largely, "I suppose you're decent company, compared to everyone else here." Now that he has vague memories of dragging Makoto to his sleep spot to cuddle and snapping at anyone who came near, he's not pretending he doesn't want to spend time with him, because that would be like admitting embarrassment, and he refuses. Celeste, similarly, realizes how much she likes her classmates, but she still isn't expressing that too much. Fuyuhiko and Peko hug in front of everyone. Hifumi is more chill about body stuff, now that he vaguely remembers bathing with everyone. Just generally, there's a lot of "I love you guys." "You guys are my best friends." Etc.

Weird reactions to meat and blood. The specifics vary; some of them are repulsed, some of them are weirdly compelled. Akane actually might be in the repulsed group; after having visited her usual ravenous hunger on human bodies the whole time she was undead, now raw meat and blood seriously turn her stomach. She can't even eat meat that's anything less than well done. No pink. Idk, it's fun to give her something to be squeamish about. Partially because I do still ship Mikane and I think it's fun to have Akane doing her normal athletic hijinks, getting injured, and for once being actually unable to look at the injury. Mikan helps her and feels so needed and appreciated. And maybe kind of hungry, seeing Akane's blood...That's weird...Hopefully it's temporary.

Subvocal/nonverbal communication. Some of them just kinda don't talk out loud as much as they used to. I think Kazuichi would be one of those. If you talk to him while he's focused on something else, he might respond exclusively in gestures, hum, and grunts. Honestly, not a troublesome symptom at all. He's valid. It's just different from before.

Temper. They are trying to keep it together, but they go from zero to a hundred way easier than before. Which is saying a lot, for some of them. Fortunately, this intersects with the "in touch with their feelings" thing, so the kinds of things they get angry about are different. More honest. But still, they're getting into more fights than anyone wants. Usually with people outside their class. If anyone says anything to Nagito about feeding Reserve Course students to his classmates, Fuyuhiko is going off, because Nagito should never have been in that position in the first place! What, did they want him to hunt for animals until they ran out and lose a finger, like the kid? (At this point, some of Makoto's classmates get mad, because they're all still sensitive about that, and this might end with Peko pointing a sword at Mondo.)

Altered physical boundaries. Like the blood thing, some of them are more into physical contact than before, and some of them are more averse than before. I'd say most of them fall in the first group, with only a couple in the second. Hiro is more touch-averse, out of caution.

A few of them do follow their lucksters around like ducklings. Often not consciously. It just happens. I could see Taka and Mukuro being like this. Kazuichi and maybe Chiaki, too. For the most part, the touch-averse ones (the ones who weren't touch-averse before) are significantly less so with the lucksters. They have vague memories of haircuts and gentle hands cleaning their injuries. Their defenses aren't high, toward their lucksters.

I'm sure this ask is innocent but I feel like you're trying to get me in trouble lolol or maybe that's just my fandom anxiety.

First, just to clarify, I don't "only" see Shuichi as trans. I've written many cis Shuichi fics and also I have many DR characters that I see as nonbinary (Chihiro, Keebo, Twogami, to name a few) and trans (Tsumugi, Hiyoko, Mikan, Makoto, to name a few)

Shuichi being a trans man is my second favorite gender hc behind they/them nonbinary agender Chihiro :)

That being said, I am not the biggest fan of trans Kokichi hcs. I will and have read fics with this premise and it's lovely! But to me, he way too closely fits the archetype of cis gay men that I knew in high school for me to really hc him as anything other than that. He's loud, flamboyant, will absolutely dress GNC, but at the end of the day he identifies with he/him and that's what he was born as.

I feel like you have to say this in fandom spaces these days, so I apologize if this feels belittling or obvious: But a reminder that just because I don't see him as trans doesn't make any trans Kokichi hcs any less valid. And if that's how you see him, then be loud n proud about it like I am for Shuichi being a trans man :D

Hi! I kinda read a post about Senpai is an otokonoko and would like more information.

From what I read, it seems like the story doesn't fully commit to the characters being LGBT and just makes weird changes to keep the story long. I don't know if it's that way, but I have these impressions so far from reading Webtoon and your post (spoilers):

-Makoto: I feel that Makoto's gender identity story just stopped without a proper ending. Like look, if they were a femboy, that would be OK, it just feels that there is no conclusion and suddenly the story doesn't say anything about that. The last thing was them kinda considering "why choosing when I can be both", but when Ryuji confessed it was like "it's my fault because I look like a girl", which as a trans girl myself, I don't feel good seeing this kind "backtracking"

-Aoi: she was super in love with Makoto, no matter the gender they were, but there was this obvious hint she was at least lesbian or bi. But out of nowhere, she has a trauma that makes her stop following her even though she loves her because she thinks there are others who love her more and then change her whole story to focus on her grandma and dad issues.

-Riuji: the author makes a good story explaining how Riuji is gay and he loves Makoto for who they are, but so far it feels that them both exploring their relationship is going kinda slow, and even he knows (from today's chapter) that Makoto doesn't feel the same way as him. But then, the author makes episodes that feel that Aoi and Riuji are getting too close, kinda like a way to step back their queerness and that feels bad too.

I don't know, these are my conclusions so far and I don't know if I'm right or wrong or if things will get better, but from what I read from your post yesterday, it doesn't feel like that.

Aoi's trauma was valid and actually made a very good and compelling story.

Makoto's the one character that wasn't developed the right way for me imo. However, they do end up their story by accepting themselves and by having their family accept them in a more positive way. They went the "I'm just who I am route" though.

We're still waiting for the volumes to come out so that we can maybe get some more content from the bonus chapters, right now there are 6 volumes out of probably 10, volume 7 coming out on November.

I really hope we get some kind of epilogue or something by volume 10, because the ending wasn't all that satisfying to me.

Vivia time!!!

My first impression of him had a lot of squealing. I thought he was adorable and wanted to get him all the books he wanted. I assumed he was gonna be one of the first detectives we worked with because his personality wasn't super obvious, so I thought they'd want to showcase it immediately so people didn't get bored of him. They did not do that but i did not get bored, let me tell you

Some headcanons, like Makoto and Yuma he is ALSO schizospec. You're welcome guys. Improving media one silly at a time. Anyways I also think that, despite him enjoying laying in uncomfy spots, he likes fuzzy soft plushies and pillows. Just to hug em while he naps.

One complaint I have is that his warnings about Yuma bringing disaster and bad things just... is sort of dropped? Mainly because he only gets a focus in chapter 4, and chapter 5 immediately starts the investigation and you don't have vivia and the others. That plotline should have been introduced earlier, I think. Vivia could've been giving all these cryptic warnings and such in the previous chapters, and chapter 4 could have resolved it better. Because. I mean. Vivia isn't wrong, Yuma has brought a bit of death to Kanai Ward. Literally. However I love every single other bit of Vivia's character. He's so cute and sweet, and chapter 4 was so emotionally charged- he's like the Shuichi we never got.

As for my favorite pairing, it's actually Yuma and Vivia. I know the fandom really likes Vivia and Yakou, but I see it as more one-sided? Yakou was suuuuper focused on revenge to even think about possibly being romantically involved with anyone else. Yuma and Vivia get a cool anime fight and a clash of ideals and... honestly, both sides do have their merits. In chapter 4 and 5 it shows both sides being valid in some capacity. Of course, Yuma always chooses the truth, but like... both sides truly are understandable. Also, the height difference is amazing. 10/10.

Overall, Vivia is a really great character. It just sorta seems like the game thrust everything for him into chapter 4, which... sucks. You could say that for the others, but they didn't have as much going on. Yakou had some slight foreshadowing, even. Vivia didn't. He does acknowledge this in chapter 3 though, that was funny. I love him, he's a cute goth boy. I'd sit and read with him <33
