Next week is Cherry Magic's last episode and I'd like a suggestion as to what to watch next. Since last year I've watched some shows that I've enjoyed to different degrees. So far I've vibed more with the Japanese ones and only have watched two Thai shows: step by step and cherry magic.

I definitely like cherry magic more but I'd like to watch some more Thai bl, as I can see they're very popular, but honestly I don't know where to begin. I don't know if mentioning my favorite shows would help?

I think you're vibbing more with Cherry Magic Th because it's following the original yaoi so closely, so it's def more JBL feeling story than it is ThBL.

Before I start, off script, seek ye Seven Days. It's my favorite JBL of all time and it's absolutely amazing and very special. It's in two parts and worth every effor to try to find. Here's me talking about it.

First, let me triage some connective tissue.

You like JBL so that means higher filming standards and certain aura of authenticity.

10 Thai BLs to try if you prefer soft Japanese BL

1 Until We Meet Again (YouTube)

UWMA is, without question, a work of narrative genius with a powerful and cohesive romantic backbone and stellar performances. It is (to date) the only Thai BL that I’ve rated a 10/10 predominantly on the basis of story structure. That said it is also very well cast (and it’s a BIG cast), with solid production values, and enduring pair branding and a softness and complexity that should appeal for a JBL stan. More of my feels on this on here.

2 I Feel You Linger in the Air (iQIYI or grey)

I truly loved this time travel romance. IFYLITA is an exquisite BL, from filming techniques to narrative framework (much like Until We Meet Again). Steeped in history and family drama it edges into lakorn AKA soap opera. This is an elegant and classy BL… from Thailand which normally doesn't even try for classy. The main couple (both as a pair and individuals) were excellent, particularly Bright (Yai) whose eye-work acting style is a personal favorite of mine. Pity about the ending. Oh it wasn’t that sad but it wasn’t great either. However, JBL isn't noted for sticking the landings either. Full review and discussion here.

3 My Ride (Gaga)

Thai BL grew up with this little pulp (the first ever to make my end of year top 10). It’s a truly lovely and special little show featuring the extremely rare pairing of sunshine/sunshine (AKA a cinnamon roll couple) plus mature explorations of relationships using one of the softest, sweetest and most innocent friends to lovers vehicles. Kindly, overworked doctor meets broken-hearted motorcycle taxi driver in an “other side of the tracks” slow burn romance. The support cast is excellent, making for great friendship groups and family dynamics. With honest queer rep that adds to, but doesn’t impede, the story, and genuine conversation about the nature of class, wealth, and classism, not to mention communication, honesty, and respect for boundaries, you can’t go wrong with this show. Full review.

My caveat with this one is, like Step by Step, it is a Thai pulp which mean production values will not be up to Japan's standards. So if you bounce hard off the style of the first few 2 eps, it doesn't get better, so drop it and move on.

4 A Tale of Thousand Stars (YouTube)

With great casting and cinematography this drama nods at BL tropes but manages to elevate them (and itself) with a strong mature story concept about a spoiled rich kid who gets a heart transplant and becomes a rural teacher in order to pay out survivor’s guilt. On the way he falls in love with a local park ranger and contends with his own classism and escapist tendencies. Everyone seemed to perfectly suit their roles and GMMTV made the most out of its stable. Combined with excellent production (and post production) values, 1000 Stars is without question GMMTV’s most mature, charming, and smart BL series. I think it should go down as one of the top BLs of all time. I feel safe recommending this one to friends and non BL watchers.

5 He's Coming to Me (YouTube)

Boy and ghost boy fall in love, must solve ghost’s murder. Peak pining but also pretty tame, features my favorite sweet but important coming out sequence. The third in my precious triumvirate of unbeatable Thai BLs, that are only nominally BL because the story, acting, and production values are so good. (others are UWMA & 1k*)

You don't mention any PNR or high concept, but I still think it's worth giving this one a try.

6 Moonlight Chicken (YouTube)

I enjoyed this complicated little show, even though it’s spectacularly messy gay with lots of shrapnel and authentic pain. I thought the leads (EarthMix from 1k*) turned in their most compelling performance to date. But it was GeminiFourth (My School President) who stole my heart. That said, the most interesting central relationship was that of Jim & Li Ming, their father-son angst mixed with evident affection made me tear up. This was more slice of life than it was BL, but it ended happily so I’m not mad at it. Full review here.

It's not as soft as you like, but you might try it anyway, because it is Very Good.

A note if you watch this and enjoy GeminiFourth, you could try their BL, My School President. I chose not to explicitly rec it to you because it's VERY Thai Bl with lots of comedy and slapstick, and you named prestige JBL and KBL (which are the anthesis of this). Taht said, MSP has no more or less than Japan's Cherry Magic, so you might enjoy it.

7 Make a Wish (grey)

An odd pull but I'm going with it. This PNR (from noted Y-novelist Sammon - Manner of Death & Triage) about a doctor who can see the dead and strikes a bargain with a wish-granting irreverent tree angel - naturally they fall in love. The Thai afterlife is incredibly bureaucratic but I enjoyed the premise and the unfolding of the story (it’s not predictable but still satisfying and with nice little twist). I like that the doctor is just gay af and has a fag hag bestie and everything. The cast is excellent but the comedic stylings could feel too overblown and tonally off. (But again no more than something like Japan's Cherry Magic.) It had sad parts and did make me cry but is ultimately happy with a great sex scene, good smiley kisses, and all the agency.

8 Bed Friend (YouTube -cut version, iQIYI - v high heat)

You didn't name My Personal Weatherman (a great high heat JBL from last year) but if you want to try some Thai-style high heat, this is your best bet. Office frienamies transition a flaming hot one night stand into a f-buddy relationship that is built on a puppy/cat dynamic (and kinks into it at one point). Our puppy is loyal, smitten, and protective with endlessly longing eyes, while our cat is snarky, prickly, and deeply damaged (ALL THE TRIGGERS). NetJames give lovely high-heat with excellent chemistry and tuned-in performances of surprising depth, the story ultimately fails them at little as it waffles and went off the rails. But that's a Thai BL thing. Full review here.

9 The Eclipse (YouTube)

This is a good show but the cast is excellent and the leads are absolutely flawless, which elevates it beyond just good. We got a nuanced and multifaceted burgeoning relationship: philosophical (and socio-political) conflict contrasted to moments of empathy; flirtation contrasted to moments of genuine affection, plus plenty of angst. This narrative is less about love than it is about courage and tenderness. However, near the end the pacing was off and the plot frustrating. Still, this is an enjoyable watch, with a finale that features verbal consent and a fun blooper reel.

10 Love By Chance (YouTube)

Okay I dithered a lot over this last one and finally chose this. Because in an intro to Thai BL you should have at least one trail by fire and that's bound to be a MAME offering.

AePete’s meet cute is one of the best ever put on screen. They are just so genuine and soft with each other, it’s hard not to love them from the first moment. All the best Thai BL tropes deployed (and there are a lot of them) are earned honestly by the narrative, including the seme/uke dynamic (such as it is). The characters are unique as this is a poor/rich pairing, where Ae is tough & scrappy, caring & protective, and probably demisexual, while Pete is timid, shy, lonely, and out gay (with his peers). The language is also glorious with Pete using formal (even old fashioned) register, while Ae is entirely rude. You can train your ear for Thai high & low registers with this show (in fact, it's why I started learning them). As surrounding characters point out, they shouldn't work together, and yet they're very much wonderful when they are together.

HOWEVER: You watch LBC for the mains, ignore the sides (trigger warnings), and don't bother with any of the follow ups and you'll be fine. AePete will remain in your heart for a really long time. They are still one of my all time favorite couples. Also (still) two of the Thai BL industry's most famous actors.

For those who are wondering, yes the last contender was, indeed, Bad Buddy. But I chose LBC purely on the basis of softness.

I searched your blog and saw that you’ve gotten asked about the chemistry of Alicent and Rhaenyra on HotD, but it was about the younger versions, so my question is would you say the older versions have it? I think they kinda do have something, and the actors are very close irl, so it seems to me that while narratively it’s pretty one-sided (I know you don’t care for that), chemistry-wise they’re both giving something. To elaborate a bit, I don’t think the writing for their “river of history” (line from script) was any good, but just looking at the scene I can believe it.

well as i've said before ... offscreen chemistry does not necessarily bleed into onscreen dynamics so i don't really use whether or not actors are friendly irl as an indicator of anything. if someone tells me oh and they're best friends or oh and they dated irl or oh and they're married i can be like that makes sense but i don't use that as a deciding factor.

in terms of chemistry i mean they don't look entirely indifferent to one another in that scene but that isn't really chemistry. catelyn and cersei have more of a moment of understanding with each other

i saw that they'd expanded it, it's extraordinary! i'd love to know how many hundreds of thousands of us were watching shaky livestreams all around the world with all those people who were in italy.

the end IS "very dark and final," but as with all art, can be utilized for different emotions and purposes, so i'd guess he liked the "this is the end, my beautiful friend" as a farewell note. whatever comes next will be a whole new chapter for him, so this does stand as a specific conclusion too. plus the fact that this is the last show he'll probably ever play in his 20s!

that ad with him stepping from the dark into the bright open threshold of the doorway makes me think of both lights up and the you are home website, it's just so harry symbolically :')

i would love to know what instrumental music he was listening to at that time! i thought the piece he wrote for DWD was perfect, it's pretty but so eerie and pulls that double duty of seeming like a comfort melody to becoming the trigger song. tbh all of the music, soundtrack and score, in that movie was impeccable. (the visuals too! any problems came down to the writing in the script, especially in the last act, but the artistic elements were good!)

It sounds more like a young Sam & Dean show, which is what most people think of when they hear "prequel".

I doubt Jensen would have been keen to the idea because it would still be about Sam because he was the one of the "special children" and young Dean was also all about Sam ("look after Sammy").

Personally, I think Jensen thought about The Winchesters five minutes after he read the finale script, which was before this EW interview took place.

I love seeing Uncle Denzel spitting out facts of wisdom. 😅 He is SO RIGHT!! An actor's "branding" is huge, and it's, "are they any good?" It's not, "are they everywhere?" That is so true! Especially for decent actors. I think Tom and Zendaya on some level understand this, but they also walk the fine line of having a young fanbase and wanting to remain "relatable" and "fan-friendly" (especially since they are in large franchises - I'm almost sure it's required), but at the same time, you want to also be a bit mysterious on some level as well...

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio mentioned this in an interview as well IIRC. He doesn't do many interviews (not even late night) and you rarely if ever see his actual face on his Instagram account. He doesn't even really promote his work lol. His account is mainly about environmental awareness. When asked why he's that way, he mentioned in an interview a while back that he prefers to keep some mystery to him, because he feels that if ppl know TOO much about him, then it will be harder for audiences to see him as different characters in different roles.

I have to admit, he has a point!

I mean, I feel like everyone can have their OWN way of doing things on their OWN media account. Actors have been acting looong before Twitter and Instagram anyway. (*gasp!* 🙊 I know)

I notice Timothée Chalamet rarely really posts as well. I think many actors are aware of being OVER-exposed. It's always better for ppl to MISS you, than for ppl to be like: "Ugh.... them again???" 🙄

Hi again, anon! Thanks for the new link :) I just watched the scene (oh wow, it was so well-written, better than most adaptations out there haha), and here’s basically what happens during the flashback:

Golden cicada visits Wukong while he’s stuck under Five Finger Mountain and comments on how far the Great Sage Equaling heaven has fallen. Wukong says he recognizes the GC as one of Buddha’s disciples. GC says he came from the western paradise and that he’s on his way to reincarnate/enter the human realm. But before he does, he wants to ask if Wukong acknowledges his wrongdoing and if he regrets causing havoc in heaven.

Wukong says his only regret is not dying 300 years ago and that he hates GC and co. for allowing him to live. Being stuck under the mountain is worse than death and he regrets wanting to be a celestial/seeking immortality in the first place. He shouldn’t have tried to change his own fate. --> but he is VERY bitter saying all this. The voice acting and the kid’s expression are excellent.

This is when GC gives Wukong a peach as a present- he took it from Flower Fruit Mountain. Wukong says, “This is a peach from my Huaguo...” before he starts crying while eating it. After he’s done, GC snatches the peach seed and turns it into a tree.

He then tells Wukong that they’re the same because GC is a golden cicada born from the earth and sky. But the difference is that GC dedicated himself completely to Buddhism and has no complications in his heart. However, Buddha says that’s not true and GC still has a lot of issues he hasn’t let go of, which is why Buddha wants him to reincarnate as a human. Before he disappears, GC tells Wukong their fate’s entwined by karma and fortune.

That’s it! Hope it helps! And once again, that was an excellent scene- Tianzhenpai really is one of the superior adaptations! It uses child actors, but damn, that script is smarter than most other versions XD

They want to leave some good things behind, both during their lifetime and posthumously. My old friend Louis Koo (古天樂) is such a hero in the film industry of Hong Kong. He is a very handsome man, remarkable actor, prolific producer and generous investor. He even takes up leadership responsibilities in film organisations such as Hong Kong Performing Artistes Guild(香港演藝人協會) and Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers(香港電影工作者總會). What he does not know or does not want to know is perhaps that happiness consists of getting enough sleep.

I guess this guy probably sleeps 4 hours a day but still untired—so long as film can fill up his time. When the sun is overhead, he is occupied with shooting, meetings, running his film production and post-production companies, cursory PR activities and filming commercials for clients. When the moon lights up the sky, Louis has dinners with film investors, reads scripts or proposals and solves problems for other film professionals. Anxiety and stress? Exhaustion? Headache? This superstar surely has feelings of burnout but Louis Koo faces it bravely alone. He is ordinarily reticent because he does not wish his dread to stir anyone.

What I have is a malevolent curiosity. I once asked Louis, “Isn’t it wiser for you spend money on something else? Film is a risky business.” He, as usual, prudently replied, “I made a great living by what I got from the film industry and Hong Kong. I get more and I want to give more too. It is my sense of duty to put back into the film industry and Hong Kong the equivalent of what I took, in fact too much, out of it.”

This year, Louis made a major breakthrough in Hong Kong film genres—no more gangster movie for Hong Kong! His newly produced work is Warriors of Future (明日戰記) which is a science fiction thriller, though filled with typical characters and clunky dialogue, has been immensely entertaining because of its spectacular visuals and ample special effects. This quintessential Hong Kong blockbuster is packed with non-stop action and popping fight. The effort will only be meant as a starting point for inspiring more such Hong Kong films to come if this new genre that employs technology and digital instruments can prove to be of attractive commercial returns to the investors. When I watched the film in a local district Chai Wan, I saw families all over the cinema. Shouts and laughter were everywhere. They came to support Louis Koo, the superstar who now stands for the spirit of Hong Kong! They will not let the spirit be destroyed.

Life is like a sandwich. Success in one slice of bread and failure is the other. What Louis has put in-between the slices is his belief about the immortality of films of Hong Kong—the forgotten ‘Hollywood of the Far East’. Louis said, “As long as there is money being invested in Hong Kong films and we can keep people in the industry not to change jobs, our hopes and dreams will not be sabotaged!”

oohoo, I love all of this so much!! the wide angle especially, and how it lets you see both the band and what the screens are showing! his little smile and the 1-2-3-4 of him counting the band in for the chorus, and yEESSS his little guitar-playing bunny-hopping all over the stage 😂 he’s so much more mobile than he gets credit for - I’ve noticed in other vids that show the screens the camera operator has a hard time tracking him while he ping pongs back and forth!
