Vietnam War: PHILCAG-V at Thành Điện, 1966

Circa December 1966: this diorama presents the PHILCAG-V (Philippine Civic Action Group to Vietnam) forces on their way to Thành Điện during the Vietnam War, in which several units of the PHILCAG-V served from 1966 to 1969. The Thành Điện region is part of the Châu Thành district of the Tây Ninh Province, which is 72.5 kilometers (45 miles) northeast of South Vietnamese capitol of Sàigòn (now Hồ Chí Minh City). Tây Ninh would serve as the base camp/headquarters of the PHILCAG-V, while other medical units would extend their operations to the towns of Phú Cường in the province of Bình Dương, Mỹ Tho in the province of Định Tường, and Bao Trai in the province of Hậu Nghĩa. And the PHILCAG-V equipment facility was located in the Hiệp Hòa district of the Bắc Giang province, which is just 10 kilometers from Châu Thành district.

Unlike the PEFTOK (Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea) that served overseas more than a decade earlier, the PHILCAG-V was on civil and medical operations, specifically to help the Vietnamese people who were displaced by the war. However, the PHILCAG-V also had a Military Assistance Program that would train members of the Địa Phương Quân (VT: Local Army / South Vietnamese Regional Forces) in Long Bình in the province of Đồng Nai, Đà Nẵng in the province of Quảng Nam, Quy Nhơn in the province of Bình Định, and Vịnh Cam Ranh in the province of Khánh Hòa.

The Philippine civic operations started with Operation Brotherhood in 1954, shortly after the Indochina War (1946-1951), where Pres. Ramon Magsaysay Sr. (1907-1957) sent a contingent of medics to help the Vietnamese refugees. But now with the Vietnam War (1955-1975) raging, the United States of America and the Republic of Vietnam (VT: Việt Nam Cộng hòa / also known as South Vietnam) called upon the Philippine military to support the war against the Communist Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam), but sending combat troops was rejected by Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, Sr. (1917-1989) which nullified any initial promises made by his predecessor, Pres. Diosdado Macapagal Sr. (1910-1997). Instead, Pres. Marcos opted to send soldiers and civilians to help the refugees; similar to how Macapagal sent the 16-man humanitarian aid team of PHILCON I (Philippine Contingent) in 1964, but on a larger scale.

From 1966-1968, 10,450 military personnel served under the PHILCAG-V and were dispatched to the Thành Điện region; along with military engineers, doctors and nurses to support other civilian groups in the area. And for the first seven weeks of their deployment, the PHICAG-V teams were treating an average of 2,000 medical and dental patients per week.

The first PHICAG-V units were almost 2,000 men strong, under the command of the WW2 and PEFTOK veteran, Brig. Gen. Gaudencio Tobias; who was replaced in 1968 by Brig. Gen. Ceferino Carreon. The first PHILCAG-V units arrived in Sài Gòn on the 28th of July, 1966.

Although the PHILCAG-V primary orders were for civic duties, these were also battle tested soldiers who had to contend with the constant sniper and ambushes by the Việt Cộng guerillas hiding in the forests of Thành Điện. By the end of the tour of the 12th of December 1969 of Dậu (Vietnamese Year of the Rooster / 酉), the PHILCAG-V only suffered 9 casualties and 64 wounded.

Hab wieder was neues bekommen, dabei bin ich mit dem ersten Pred noch nicht fertig. Ich hab mich vom Diorama hinreißen lassen. Leider fehlen der Figur (Machiko Noguchi) die Hände samt Schwert, aber ich hab mit dem Händler schon geschrieben. Ich bekomm sie nachgeliefert. Hab noch drei andere Figuren zusätzlich bestellt. 😅 ************************************************* I got new tinker stuff, but my first Pred is not done. I am lost in the build for the diorama. On the new figurine, the hands and sword from Machiko Noguchi are missing. I wrote with the vendor and I will get the missing parts delivered.
