the false god talk today is making me think of: and all the pieces fall right into place -> ‘cause it fit too right, puzzle pieces in the dead of night, shoulda known it was a matter of time pipeline. it’s almost an awareness of like, i should’ve known our physical connection alone wouldn’t be enough to save this.

Obviously there’s more to it than that, but there is a thread between the puzzle pieces falling into place (eg the physical intimacy) to it being used as a bandaid to the intimacy finally fading causing the rest of the relationship to crumble for good because the last form of communication is dead.

E.g. remember looking at this room? we loved it cause of the light/now I just sit in the dark and wonder if it’s time // Our maladies were such we could not cure them/And so a touch that was my birthright became foreign // I didn't opt in to be your odd man out // my boredom’s bone deep, this cage was once just fine/am I allowed to cry? // And I'll tell you one thing, honey, I can tell when somebody still wants me // And so on etc.

It’s like: this was a thing that always brought us back together when we were on different wavelengths, but what is left when even that is gone? It just paints a picture of two people who just fundamentally have nothing left to share. The “should’ve known it was a matter of time” to me reads more like, I should have known the voices in his head (eg his issues) would sabotage us yet again rather than directly about sex, but it’s part of that because the whole point is that the issues trump the physical connection when it comes down to it, so it’s all related.

… and then just to hurt your feelings, you get to The Manuscript and you realize how that first experience of intimacy, and how it was withdrawn from her nearly as soon as it began, really affected how she viewed its role in relationships.

It’s so fascinating as a theme in her writing!

(And yes I know people have thoughts about the muses of the song, ultimately it doesn’t matter because it’s the same thread, bla bla bla.)
