fav tracks: like a fighter, bad love
hey guys, HAPPY FEBRUARY!!!! the first was super busy so this one comes a day late, but it’s not like anyone noticed… also, like, i needed a DAY?? TO PROCESS THE EXISTENCE OF THIS ALBUM???
lol, why do we need an album mocking the sounds of the 70s… if NOT TO BE USED AS BACKGROUND CLIP MUSIC FOR A SCENE FROM THE 70S!!!! (if you know, you know. now make fun of me.) space lady is a rip off david bowie, miracle is a rip off beatles track, and… yeah, no clue why i listened to all of this. it certainly wasn’t BAD, but they clearly know how to imitate a sound. lol, where was the synthpop?

Including Terrence Malick’s A Hidden Life, four world premieres, and a screening of the Crazy Ex-Girlfriend documentary feature with series creators Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna in attendance
Austin, TX – August 23, 2019 – Austin Film Festival (AFF), the premier film festival recognizing writers’ and filmmakers’ contributions to film, television, and new media, has announced the first wave of screenings to be included in their 2019 film slate, taking place October 24-31.
AFF will screen legendary writer/director Terrence Malick’s latest film A Hidden Life, starring August Diehl and Valerie Pachner. The film follows the true story of an Austrian farmer who refused to yield to Nazi forces in World War II. Also screening at AFF is the biopic Harriet, written by Kasi Lemons and Gregory Allen Howard and starring Cynthia Erivo, Joe Alwyn, and Jannelle Monáe, following the harrowing journey of American hero Harriet Tubman. In addition, AFF will screen The Truth from writer/director Hirokazu Koreeda starring Catherine Deneuve, Juliette Binoche, and Ethan Hawke.
AFF will also be hosting the world premiere of the documentary feature Cowboys written and directed by Austin locals John Langmore and Bud Force and The Animal People from executive producer Joaquin Phoenix, written by Cassandra Suchan, Denis Henry Hennelly, Sasha Perry, Brian Palmer and directed by Cassandra Suchan and Denis Henry Hennelly. Aline Brosh McKenna will also join the Festival alongside her Crazy Ex-Girlfriend co-creator and star Rachel Bloom to present the documentary Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Oh My God I Think It’s Over that follows the show’s final episode, with filmmaker Katie Hyde in attendance. Following the screening, the three will sit down for a Q&A to discuss the CW musical comedy series that explores mental health issues and modern relationships and the story’s journey through its final season, which concluded in April 2019.
The complete list of programming, including over 100 more films as well as hundreds of panels, will be announced in late September.
AFF FIRST WAVE:
A Hidden Life
Writer/Director: Terrence Malick
Starring: August Diehl, Valerie Pachner, Maria Simon, Tobias Moretti, Bruno Ganz, Matthias Schoenaerts, Karin Neuhäuser, Ulrich Matthes
Based on real events, from visionary writer-director Terrence Malick, A HIDDEN LIFE is the story of an unsung hero, Franz Jägerstätter, who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II. When the Austrian peasant farmer is faced with the threat of execution for treason, it is his unwavering faith and his love for his wife Fani and children that keeps his spirit alive.
A Patient Man
Texas Premiere
Writer/Director: Kevin Ward
In the aftermath of a terrible car accident, a man tries to make sense of his life and seeks revenge for what he has lost.
Cowboys
World Premiere
Writer/Director: John Langmore, Bud Force
In an age of breathtaking change, rapid urbanization, and a daily news cycle, it’s hard to imagine an existence almost entirely divorced from that reality. Yet, COWBOYS: A Documentary Portrait reveals a fascinating way of life tied uniquely to the natural environment and capricious thousand-pound animals. Filmed on location in the most remote parts of the American West, COWBOYS paints an intimate portrait of a surprisingly diverse and eloquent group of men and women committed to a harsh reality while feeding a population they’re likely never to encounter.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Oh My God I Think It’s Over
Director: Katie Hyde
“Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Oh My God I Think It’s Over” is a peek behind the curtain as the team behind the award-winning comedy series "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” wraps up its final season. We watch as co-creators Rachel Bloom and Aline Brosh McKenna and their many talented collaborators steer the show through its final episode. The film highlights their unique process as they juggle writing, songwriting, choreography on a spinning turntable, last minute big ideas and emergencies, and the "impossible task" of creating a smart, feminist, musical comedy show that's a process unlike any other show ever to air on network TV.

Harriet
Writers: Gregory Allen Howard, Kasi Lemmons
Director: Kasi Lemmons
Starring: Cynthia Erivo, Leslie Odom Jr., Janelle Monáe, Joe Alwyn, Jennifer Nettles, Clarke Peters
Based on the thrilling and inspirational life of an iconic American freedom fighter, HARRIET tells the extraordinary tale of Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and transformation into one of America’s greatest heroes. Her courage, ingenuity, and tenacity freed hundreds of slaves and changed the course of history.
Macabre
North American Premiere
Writer: Lucas Paraizo and Rita Gloria Curvo
Director: Marcos Prado
Macabre is a feature film based on the true story of the 'Werewolves of Freiburg', two young brothers who were accused of brutal murders in the 90's, in Brazil. The thriller follows Sergeant Téo in his quest for the suspects hiding in the Atlantic Forest. While the population, the press and the local police condemn the brothers, Téo realizes that one of them may be innocent.
Sleeping in Plastic
World Premiere
Writer/Director: Van Ditthavong
A small Texas town awakes when a high school wrestler gets swept into the dangerous world of an intoxicating drifter and her ruthless lover. Lives intertwine and spiral violently out of control once he becomes her escort driver and risks everything to save her.
The Animal People

The Truth

Fabienne is a star; a star of French cinema. She reigns amongst men who love and admire her. When she publishes her memoirs, her daughter Lumir returns from New York to Paris with her husband and young child. The reunion between mother and daughter will quickly turn to confrontation: truths will be told, accounts settled, loves and resentments confessed.
The VICE Guide to Bigfoot
World Premiere
Writer: Zach Lamplugh, Brian Emond
Director: Zach Lamplugh
The debut feature from director Zach Lamplugh (Adult Swim); This paranormal comedy follows a hopelessly millennial reporter on the most important assignment of his career: Bigfoot.

Day 14: Saturday January 14, 2017 - “Breezy and 65″
A beautiful day, a beautiful day. By 5p we’d be hustling through the Tucson airport to catch a flight back North, less than 24 hours after landing....the day started on 5 hours sleep, dragging but we’d have to make the most of our day; and we boarded knowing we had.
Aria stood in her crib asking for Uncle Jake - how she knew I was there, is beyond us. We’d get collected and roll to the homestead for a classic Bill Breakfast. The spread beat any best brunch spot....and one sure to make the nose run. So love being at the homestead - just a different pace out there under the Rincons, with the qualls, the cactus, and now a Goldie Girl. Stomach full and happy.
A Saturday morning favorite, the Rincon Farmers Market had a special offering today - a chance to reconnect with my road parents, the Porembas! Synchronicity! Sure getting some roasted chilis and some “coffee guy coffee” is a plus to travelling to the Pueblo, but the bonus gravy was sharing energy with these two that mentored us on “life with a view” - a nice shot in the arm to get bubbles in the blood going in the new year.
An opportunity to take a nap? We dont have time for that. While AC got herself ready for the day’s main event, I took on the loop at Saguaro NP....a beautiful cloud flavored sunny breezy 65 day - I want to go see some cactus. Drove out to that favorite overlook and took time to appreciate the smell of the roses found in being in a tshirt outside. Love breezy sunny days like this. A taste of Spring. Sat out there and read my book and was so relaxed I didnt want to leave. That place - sat out here the night I first held Audrie’s hand and again when we’d returned ‘home’ in 2015 after a hard summer - caused some good reflection of the sentiment of place. I do really love Tucson; I suppose thats easy to do in January. On that favorite overlook, it definitely felt like home - a place we always come back to, and the feeling was strong under the cool sun. This boot just fits.
We ended our run by going to a Celebration of Life for a little girl AC had used to work with. I wore a pink shirt to our first funeral together - I thought a little girl would like that. It was such a beautiful gathering where as a picture of her dancing in the rain a week before her death, and they talked about thinking of her wet kisses when it rained, the desert began a downpour outside. As we held little orange hearts, and heard from the family - the biggest takeaway was that life can be long, and life can be short, but what matters is how you do the living. Even with our moments of the angry elf, what matters is how we work through it and figure it out. Reminded me of Chris Galvin teaching me years ago that what matters is that it all had meaning. For a four year old, there was certainly lots of love shared. I appreciated being able to deliver the news of the rain to her parents. I also appreciated what the whole thing meant to Audrie to be there and my partners role in the story. As we raced to the airport to catch our flight, a big bright lush double rainbow bent over Mt Lemmon. Who needs darkness for a celebration of life?
What matters is how you do the living. Today we lived well - filling it with people we love, places we love, and things we love. Whether it be long or short, what matters is that we fill it with days like this, as often as we can. If we do that, we can hope to have as beautiful and colorful day as K had today.

Ep. 325 - Escape Room (Sleuth vs. 12 Angry Men)
It's early January so that must be a cheesy horror movie we can watch instead of homework films like ROMA. Thankfully ESCAPE ROOM arrived right on time and also gave us the opportunity to let Laurence Oliver and Michael Caine in SLEUTH try to outwit other guys stuck in a room with Jack Lemmon and George C. Scott in the remake of 12 ANGRY MEN. All of this could lead somewhere gentlemanly but instead somehow we get on the subject of Mike Judge's EXTRACT and Zach Braff in THE LAST KISS displaying the finer points of cuckolding. Don't @ us Trump fans. But if you must click on the links below:

A note from Coach @mitchelstrongside **HUGE SHOUT OUT!!! :)** This past Saturday, we had the 4th annual Strongside Formal which is an annual event to honor our members/family of Strongside. We are more than just a gym, we are a community and a family. We share a common interest of becoming the best possible versions of ourselves and living life to the fullest. We express it thru exercises and self determination. We all go thru the same pain, struggles, and life aches - we are bonded together thru suffering. It’s a night of food, drinks, dressing up, awards, partying, and spending time together. It’s truly wonderful! We celebrate YOU!! I give out many awards but there are always 3 very special awards that mean so much and are truly earned. I love everyone in this Strongside family! These 3 athletes just rose above and beyond themselves! I am so proud of you and all you’ve done! Keep up the amazing work and you deserve every bit of it! We are all regular people. We have struggles, we have pain, we have doubt, and we all fail at some point. However, what makes this community so special is people like this who rise above. Not only do they rise above what is trying to hold them back but they take others with them to the top. They want to do well and they want others to do well with them. They do not choose to let failure beat them. Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it. Exercise and training is raw - it’s raw because it does not let you lie or hide. The barbell will tell you straight up if you have what it takes or not and that can slap you in the face sometimes. It exposes all weaknesses and makes you humble. Again, I could not be more proud of you and what you’ve overcome! I love you guys so much!! Let’s make some noise for these guys because it’s very well earned!! 2017 Member Of The Year (chosen out of every member of the month): Megan Crum 2017 Spirit Of The Strongside Competition: Zach Barnes 2017 Coaches Choice: Melissa Lemmons Biehl #trainedbystrongside

Lyall’s Week 7 Reportage – Presidents Day Weekend !
Weekend seven of year 2017 was a memorable one for past and present Scozzie’s. The final JCT of the season was held in Baltimore whilst the College National Championships (boys) coincidentally were further up the east coast in Boston. There was a Scozzie record 24 graduates representing their respective colleges, whilst exactly the same number hustled for the 10 highly acclaimed JCT divisional titles. The three days provided electric excitement, tantalizing tussles and well deserved winners, read below for all the Scozzie top hits from a unforgettable Presidents Weekend 2017… and check out our Twitter Stories and Facebook Photo Gallery if you’d like all the best bits!
Mid Atlantic JCT
After the brilliance in Boston where Scozzie brought home two JCT titles in the BU11 and GU17’s, the hope was to continue the momentum down in Baltimore. The draws were packed to the rafters with all the top players desperate to bring a seasons worth of hard training together for the final JCT and also earn valuable seeding points before next month’s season concluding Gold Nationals. After Graeme recently aged up, Scozzie came in without a top seed and there was an opportunity presented for a new superstar to shine. The end result was 6 quarter finalists, which became 4 semi’s and finally presented two finalists when Presidents Day Monday finally arrived after 30 hours of weekend action.
Our quarter finalists came in all five age divisions, we had a U11, U13, U17 and U19, whilst holding an all Scozzie quarter final in the BU15’s. Our U11 top 8 representative was Winston, who continued his record breaking first season of competitive squash with a second successive 5th place finish destroying his provisional seeding and causing many upsets on route. The young man has only been playing squash for just over a year and continues to be one of our fastest improving players as he continues his pathway to stardom. His finishing position will bolster his ranking into the top 10 for the first time and with Nationals just around the corner, it would take a brave man to bet against him! Chase, Elliot and Linus were our other 2 representatives in the U11’s and Elliot managed to record his first ever JCT victory which was a fine reward for all his hard training to start the year.
In the U13’s, Maya stormed through to her second JCT final of the season and continued to display National Championship winning talents. Her semi final 3/0 victory was her best performance of the season and she was desperately unlucky in the final losing out to a strong opponent who was the top seed. The physical nature of the opponent through off Maya’s A game and despite a mature resilient fight back, couldn’t quite overcome the top seed to finish 2nd matching her Seattle JCT finishing position. Maya’s positive philosophy of ‘I never lose, I learn’ will stand her in good stead as she now targets the Nationals with a motivating memory spurring her onto bigger and better things in the training weeks leading up to the event. Jaclyn had a good revenge victory in the Consolation overcoming a 2/0 deficit to beat an opponent she lost to in 5 at last month’s JCT. Bobby, Drew and Ethan all had good runs in the boys Consolation event, which was highlighted with Ethan knocking out Bobby and then Drew knocking out Ethan… if the rest of the country can’t beat them, Scozzie’s eventually have to beat each other! The Drew vs Ethan match up was a classic and the first since the National Championship final of 2016, where the historic five gamer lives long in the memory!
In the U15’s, Christian came in as the 4th seed for the first time this season and aimed to reach his first JCT semi final since the golden U11 days. Like the BU13’s, the draw wasn’t kind to Scozzie match ups and Shaam had to face Yeshwin in R2 with the reward of facing Christian in the quarter on the line for the winner. Scozzie vs Scozzie match ups wouldn’t be famous if we couldn’t continue the Game 5 tiebreakers to decide the winner and that’s exactly what the two young men produced. Yeshwin was the victor this time around and then led Christian 10-6 in Game 4 after fighting from 2-0 down. Unfortunately the monumental efforts in previous rounds caught up with Yesh at exactly that moment and some fine attacking play from Christian delivered him his spot in the semi finals. Not content with 4th, Christian raced to a 2-1 lead in the semi finals and came within touching distance of a first ever JCT final. More unfortunate occurrences, as at the worst time the debatable refereeing decisions were delivered and Christian went down 11/9 in Game 5 to the eventual winner. Despite the devastation of missing out, Christian bounced back like a true champion and played his best match of the whole weekend to win 3rd place and the Bronze Medal. In the Girls event, Kristen made it to the Plate final, but like Christian, faced a tough opponent and ended a the finalist.
Three chapters in and if all that isn’t exciting enough… we aren’t even half way through yet!! The best is yet to come…
In the U17’s, Meghna was finally back to full strength after illness affected her MASA and High School National Championships. The defending JCT champion fought off Scozzie rival Abby in R2 in 4 games, before destroying her quarter final opponent to reach another semi. There she faced the top seed who ended up playing the match of her life and ended Meghna’s JCT win streak of 2017. Disappointment in not backing up consecutive JCT titles won’t stop Meghna over the next 3 weeks, as the extra motivation will spur her onto the Nationals as she aims to become a repeat National Champion after her success as a U15.
The U19’s had our strongest entry and we aimed for another Baltimore title after Sean’s victory last season over the National Champion. This person was Elle, who had her best tournament of the season peaking at the prime time with some exquisite squash over the weekend. Elle had another tough draw and had to overcome the number 2 seed in the quarter finals on route in a memorable 4 gamer against Harvards most recent recruit. The young lady looked unstoppable in the semis and reached another final continuing to build on her record of reaching the most number of JCT finals ever and is still the winningest junior in US Squash history. The only person standing in the way of her first JCT title of the season was an inform and impressive 5.12 rated opponent who had already defeated the top seed in the quarters. Elle played a great game one and had opportunities to take the lead, unfortunately she couldn’t quite shake her extremely talented opponent in the big points and went down in three high level games. A superb tournament and big stepping stone towards a possible National Championship next month. Like Elle, Eric led the Boys charge continuing his fine season in his down Year at U19’s. As if there hadn’t already been enough Scozzie vs Scozzie match ups, Eric had to defeat Max and Peter on his impressive run to the Consolation Final. He’s finally figured out how to win 3/0 and after three successive victories, won the final 3/1 in impressive style(check out the brutal match ball on twitter!). Max had a huge final JCT before he leaves to play for Brown next year and defeated higher rated opponents in succession to reach the top 16. Most notably, he beat former National Champion from 2-0 down in a 90 minute thriller which was voted by coach Lyall as Match of the Weekend. Peter was playing his first U19 since recently aging up and despite a low seeding and tough draw, managed to finish top 16 and more importantly bolster his seeding before Gold Nationals. Pallavi was the final piece of othe U19 puzzle and she had a great winning run on Sunday to reach the Plate final in her last JCT before starting at Columbia next year.
Quarter finalists in every division again shows Scozzie’s strength and depth through a record breaking 2016/17 season. What will Nationals bring next month and is there any way we can top our 6 semi finalists of last season?!?
CSA Men’s Team Championship
Over in Boston, everything was wrapping up on Sunday afternoon and the live online stream had attracted thousands of viewers. There were a record 8 divisional titles up for grabs and incredibly, Scozzie had 24 graduates amongst the 64 teams predominantly spread between divisions 1-4.
Division 1 displayed arguably the strongest showing ever displayed in College Squash. Scozzie Freshman – Sean Hughes had an incredible first season at Harvard and went an undefeated 12-0 leading up to the National Final. Facing number 1 seeds and hot favorites Trinity, Sean completed his undefeated year with a resounding 3/0 victory in the first match of the finale. It was a huge statement and signature win for Sean and the team and put them in prime position. Unfortunately the team couldn’t build from his win and eventually lost a heartbreaking 5-4. Division 2 was stacked with Scozzie’s after defeating Navy (with Mike and Owen in top 9), Zach’s Dartmouth became National Champions with a huge 7-2 victory over Ivy League rivals Princeton. Division 3 had some of our favorite Scozzie Alums and produced the best picture of the weekend with Scozzie Alums Jamie and Patrick who faced in R1, both captaining Williams and Colby respectively. The final saw Justin S representing UVA against Middlebury, and he couldn’t prevent a 6-3 win for Middlebury to win D3. Our sixth graduating senior was Arty Martella and his team at Hobart also lost out in the final of D4.
‘Scozzie’ and ‘Champion’ of the Week
The highlight reel of the Boys College finals was too epic to breakdown. But our personal favorite moment alongside Sean’s undefeated season, came from Penn captain BG Lemmon. His success made him Scozzie’s Champion of the Week, as he emotionally played his last ever college match on Sunday against defending champions Yale. Desperate for personal gratification and more importantly, one last team effort and victory, BG delivered a never to forget team speech beforehand which inspired a group of young men to produce their best result of the year. A 7-2 victory doesn’t explain the magnitude of the result and BG finally defeated an opponent whom he never defeated in 7 years worth of trying and most recently lost to 3 weeks previously 3/0. A complete role reversal of a result makes BG our Champion of the Week and an original Scozzie favorite ends an epic college journey in spectacular style.
The Final award goes to our ‘Scozzie of the Week’ who was chosen by our coaches for his application to detail at every training session and always bringing character and charisma to make everyone’s training experience a more enjoyable one. His name is Mr Elliot Lee, who the day after he was nominated and selected… went on to win his first ever JCT match. The hard work is paying off and our future champion is inching closer to stardom with every training session he completes! Keep up the hard work Elliot!
Finally, we go back to a ‘Drive’ week on Monday to buckle down our foundation driving games and further enhance everyone’s ability to contain and create with their driving games. School squash is finally over and it’s going to be a huge week leading up to the final PA Gold of the season next weekend… don’t miss it!
