In Chicago to deliver keynote symposium lecture at U of Chicago East Asia Institute, headed by Wu Hung and his stellar colleagues. While in town, I went to see Zhang Peili's solo show -- all video -- at the Art Institute. It's great! Here is a clip from the iconic 30 x 30, from 1988, regarded as the first video art work made by an artist in China. Zhang sits on the floor, breaking a mirror and then, for 180 minutes, gluing it back together. A laborious and useless act, parodying the state and arts bureaucracy operating so oppressively yet idealistically then. Beautifully installed, underscoring Zhang's deadpan formalism and total conceptualism. You will see more at Guggenheim this fall with Art and China after 1989.
