Pellinore X Guinevere's Sister?!

Okay. So... this was a something that was brought to my attention by @wandrenowle There's this very small detail in Le Morte D'Arthur that is so obscure that, as far as I see online, most Malory enjoyers never discuss because it's so obscure. But despite that, it's still pretty shocking to any well-learned Arthuriana enthusiast like myself: Merlin prophesizes to Arthur that he will wed his sister to King Pellinore. As seen in the second image above, it would seem that Aglovale, Percival, and Lamorak are referred to as Nephews of Arthur, implying that, yes, Pellinore has legally wedded one of Arthur's sisters.

The headscratcher obviously comes in the form of "Who?/which sister?". There are only three stated (half-)sisters of Arthur in Le Morte - Morgause, Elaine and Morgan - all of whom are already taken by Kings Lot, Nentres and Urien, respectively.

So, who on earth did Pellinore marry? One might be tempted to believe it's Morgause, since her husband dies early in Le Morte and thus free to remarry. Or that Malory has (unintentionally?) introduced a fourth sister of Arthur for Pellinore to marry. The problem with either possibility is that Sir Lamorak, Pellinore's son, is presented as Morgause' lover and a possible suitor, which would be massively problematic under Medieval culture since that would be incest and illegal under Church Law. It should be noted that Arthur supports a marriage between Lamorak and Morgause, which, again, would be extremely wrong and ridiculous if they were related by blood:

Rationally, we have to strictly discount Morgause as Pellinore's potential wife. Likewise, Morgan, Elaine and any unmentioned sister are also off limits because of Lamorak's narrative. So, what now? Kenneth Hodges, in the book Mapping Malory, proposes a very interesting solution: the "sister" of King Arthur being referred to here is not a blood sister but a sister-in-law. In Medieval language, "sister" could mean either your own female sibling or a female sibling from your legal spouse. Similarly, nephews could refer to one's blood nephews or nephews by marriage - Guinevere does refer to Sir Gawain as her nephew in other texts. Hodges believes Pellinore's wife could be Queen Guinevere's sister:

So, we have a possibility that Pellinore married one of Leodegrance's daughters and is (in Maloryverse) the mother of his legal sons, including Percival and Lamorak. This neatly solves the problem of Lamorak wooing Morgause, as "affinity does not beget affinity" if they're only related through Guinevere. This concept is further bolstered by certain details such the claim by Percival that they have Royal Blood on both sides of the family, which discounts the half-sisters of Arthur as they are the daughters of Duke Gorlois and strictly not Royal lineage (Although, Hodges admits that can be disputed):

If the notion of Pellinore marrying a sister of Guinevere's is taken as fact, this puts an interesting dimension to the feuding in Malory's story. Because it means Guinevere's brother-in-law and nephews are sworn enemies of Arthur's other relatives, the Orkney family:

...Making one of the central conflicts in Le Morte D'Arthur not just a blood feud between the families of King Lot and King Pellinore, it's also a blood feud between the families of Arthur and Guinevere

Andrew would fit with the strict people of heartslabyul, even if he dosen't want to say it he is a control freak deep down(similar to riddle before the overblot).

If andrew is not part of heartslabyul then he would be part of pomefiore, because andrew is so hiperfixated on being seen as normal that he tends to mask his ulgy traits using manipulation and sweet talking, wich is very pomefiore if you ask me.

Ashley goes well with the superficiallity of pomefiore, in many chances on the game she is very focused on her appearance and being percieved as atractive, and also being very toxic towards other girls who she percieves as competence.

My sister said that other option for ashley is scarabia, why? Because of one of the most important traits of this dorm is see the future or see the things straight ahead, wich considering her ability to see the future in dreams is very fitting.

Julia is most likely to end up in scarabia mostly beacuse they are the kindest dorm, their hospitality is something i can conect with julia's sweet personality.

Other option would be heartslabyul, most likely because julia is not someone who's conflictive or problematic.

Nina's is a sweet ignihyde girl because i said so because of the commentary of liking smart guys over beefy ones, and or maybe octavinelle for the same reason.

Janie(lady from 302) alongside Bennett(friend B) would be ignihyde, janie because of her love for the videogames and Bennett for science.

Jeanette is a octavinelle girlie! She has her way with bussiness and is very clever for them, so she's gotta fit in the dorm.

Xabier and all his family is part of savanaclaw without a doubt! He would be one of the most kind residents but with the same love for sports and the wild!

Si Andrew no es parte de Heartslabyul entonces sería parte de Pomefiore, porque Andrew está tan obsesionado con ser visto como normal que tiende a enmascarar sus rasgos desagradables usando manipulación y palabras dulces, lo cual es muy pomefiore si me preguntas.

Ashley va bien con la superficialidad de pomefiore, en muchas ocasiones en el juego está muy concentrada en su apariencia y en ser percibida como atractiva, y también es muy tóxica con otras chicas a quienes percibe como competencia.

Hello hello I started following you after seeing your wonderful LeGuin art, and I was really curious about your novel as well, if you’d be willing to share a little bit about it…👀

Oooooooh, thank you so much!!!!! 🥺 Omg, my novel… Thank you for asking this question. Tbh I can talk about it for hours, but I’ll do my best to be concise.

Disclaimer: I mostly write in Spanish, which is my native language, and the novel is far from being completed (I'm currently at around 25% of the first draft of the first book). So don't expect to find it in the shelves of your local bookshop any time soon, sorry...

Anyways, I actually believe my story is partly inspired by Ursula K. Le Guin’s work. I first read The Left Hand Of Darkness when I was around 23, which was also the time I started to develop stories of my own (mostly through GMing), and also got heavily interested in human evolution and anthropology. And I know LHOD had a heavy influence on me (on how I understand gender and humanity, for instance). So it would make sense that there is some of it in my work.

The story I'm working on will probably be a bilogy or trilogy. It explores the theme of two different human groups making contact with each other after being isolated for hundreds of thousands of years (at this point they’re two different species). It’s epic fantasy with a substantial science component (mostly anthropology and cell biology) and delves deep into colonialism, genocide, faith, trauma, queerness and empathy.

Now, to the juicy stuff. There are two main characters: Delshed and Vahna.

Delshed is a military officer from the Celestial Empire. After years hating what his job has made him do, he has left the army to pursue diplomacy. However, he is called back to it and tasked with the mission to eradicate the ‘demons’ that are attacking the empire’s eastern border. He then says: well okay let’s go they’re demons they have no soul so I can go kill them with my mind at peace (he is very religious, and celestial faith states all souls are sacred, hence his conflict with his own occupation). The problem is the enemy is way harder to fight than anyone had expected, and his soldiers pay the price. Which tears him apart. And let's say he doesn’t have the healthiest coping mechanisms in the world.

Here’s an old sketch of the problematic yet handsome man:

On the other hand, Vahna (she/they), whose name is Keahane at the start of the novel, is a warrior of a Heruze clan, aka one of the ‘demons’ that are attacking the empire. When the Celestials first arrived to their native land, the Heruze were massacred and displaced, and now they’re cornered into a barely inhabitable mountain range, hiding and slowly dying from hunger. So they decide to try and take back their land. Their advantages are: 1) the empire has mostly forgotten them and 2) they have the power to grow and modify the tissues in their own bodies at will. Keahane is a bleeder (one of the 3 Heruze genders), an expert at body modification, and one of their best warriors. However, horrified after being ordered to kill a whole family from the empire, they do something that is forbidden for their gender: voicing their opinion. They are then banished from the clan and stripped from their name (the worst possible punishment for their people). Their whole arc then revolves around finding out who they really are and what they want.

So the story starts with a war between these groups, which leads to Delshed and Vahna unexpectedly clashing in the battlefield. The central point of the novel is how they, instead of killing each other, end up bridging the gap that exists between them and, after much conflict, become a sort of precarious link between the two species. Which ends up spiraling into a revolution that will rattle the predatory foundations of the empire itself.

You may have seen other characters in my pieces. Such as Isenjat, one of Delshed’s officers and also his best friend. She is totally on board with eradicating the Heruze because one of them killed her first love and left her with permanent injuries that turned her life into a nightmare. She can be an insufferable spite-driven asshole sometimes but I love her.

And the other icon I draw the most is Tairitz, who appears quite late in the story, but also has me obsessed. He's a musician and a storyteller, of an ethnic minority absorbed by the empire long ago. He has lost everything yet somehow manages to be the emotionally healthiest and most deconstructed member of the cast. As an anarchist, he will be more than happy to join a revolution. It may pose a bit of an internal conflict if he falls for the imperial prince tho. Which he totally won't.

As you may have guessed, most of the cast is queer. I really really wanted an ace protagonist who would manage to have beautiful romantic relationships in which their identity is not only respected but honoured, and that is Delshed. Vahna, through the discovery of her own identity, allows me to question the whole construct of gender. And I don't know, I was craving complex and beautiful stories about queer people healing together and making the world a better place. There aren't that many in fantasy (although thankfully that's changing).

If you've read through all this, you have my eternal gratitude. I love these characters with my whole heart and they are the thing that has kept me going through very dark times. 🥺

my fic for asian les mis week is EXTREMELY strange to write because i write so many character driven stories and essentially character studies that writing a circumstance driven story is beyond difficult to write but also very interesting. like im able to explore more big picture topics and issues that i normally wouldn't be able to weave into a character driven story without going off track too much.

like im currently writing a dialogue between montparnasse and eponine (for context this fic takes place in urfa during the armenian genocide, eponine is armenian orthodox, and montparnasse a kurdish muslim, both somewhat unpracticing) but regardless, eponine a more obvious victim of the islamic driven genocide finds herself with extremely problematic and islamophobic beliefs which hurt her relationship with the non genocide supporting montparnasse who holds the objectively correct belief that islamophobia is still completely wrong, even in this situation and even when such attrocities are in her face.

idk just interesting to explore topics like this that are less surface level and actually someone like me whos family were victims of the genocide, sometimes needs to step back and look at my own beliefs

More on the problematic NPC trio of not-WWX, not-WQ, and not-JC at our Trinités rpg table last weekend!

- not!WQ and our characters successfully convinced not!WWX to tell not!JC he'd lost his GC equivalent. Not to say it was a sacrifice, of course! Just say it was an accident.

Not!WWX: *looks tempted, but...* you want me to tell him I made a mistake? *offended*

We did convince him, but yeah. Insufferable.

- not!WWX dragging not!JC away from the class not!JC was giving. "You can see he's locking his legs and then regularly he stops and goes along with it."

- not!WWX: "so you see I was trying to fix you because it's so important for your family, haha, you know, since we've grown up together and we've been super close since we were kids, I owe everything to you parents, so I did what I had to do--"

My character, whose patience for not!WWX's bullshit is extremely low at the best of times, absolutely aghast at the energy not!WWX will put into putting off stuff for two more minutes and at how awkward this entire sequence is: "Okay we're far enough. You can tell him now."

- Player who doesn't know mdzs: "I use 'everything I desire' on not!JC. What's his deepest, most secret desire?"

GM, after a few seconds: "Not!WWX."

Player: ".................er. .........as a friend, or it's romantic?"

GM: "yes."

- GM, to same player: "oh yeah, when you try to pull not!WWX's arm away from JC's shoulder, you can't, you'd need a lever or something. There's a lot more strength here than you'd think looking on."

- when the plan to Make The Gardens The Jiang-Clan Equivalent Is Tasked With Guarding Safe (in fact, it's an expedition to secretly get not!WWX's GC-equivalent back) is explained to not!JC's parents, not!JC covering for WWX's 'flakiness' over the previous months by saying WWX was busy researching and planning the expedition and it's mostly his idea.

- GM: "you feel he has, erm, opinions about his son, that might not have everything to do with reality."

Me: "k I'm gonna have a masculinist moment but: I wish one of us would bang his wife. It'd make me feel better and she would have a great time!"

- the thing that would work out the best for us at this point was if not!JC's family and entourage was attacked and murdered by the rest of the organization, which would make recruiting the trio without angering our other allies much easier!

TVA - fave TVC character (IMO Armand is THE most sympathetic character in the books, and Claudia's THE most tragic); beautifully written, interesting time period, found family dynamics, religious trauma, I love it all

Blood Communion - the series finale! bittersweet, but it had a very Disneyfied happily ever after, that at least lets all the fan faves get what they want out of immortality; no muss no fuss

Blackwood Farm - funniest/craziest TVC book IMO. Random AF and I liked the Mayfair crossovers, although I'm pissed about Merrick. My least problematic version of Lestat, just chilling with Quinn and being a diva.

Prince Lestat - the payoff I wanted after QotD; as THE plot advanced. Very action-packed & mysterious goings-on

QotD - The Twins are goated, esp. Mekare. I dislike Lestat in this book, but his dynamic with Akasha is horrifyingly fascinating

Merrick: Other than Claudia's seance & Merrick's history of the Black Mayfairs, I hated this book. Louis was #Depressed. David is a effing degenerate (derogatory). I DO NOT care what that colonizing culturally appropriating closeted racist fetishizing pedophile has to say. And Aaron disappointed me, too--I really liked him in the Witching Hour.

Blood Canticle: WTF. Like...WHY?

TotBT: I hate everything about this book. Lestat was the stupidest he's ever been, to trust a single word coming out of Raglan James' mouth. I hated the way he treated Louis (who was right all along, as usual); I hate how sloppy & messy the chase is; and I hate David (though I do feel bad for what Les did to him, that was effed up)

Most excited to see from AMC:

Mekare vs Akasha (hopefully we see Enkil in action, too)

I'd like AMC to make Rhoshamandes actually fight Louis & Gabrielle; they were already sitting ducks in QotD, and I'd like for them to have a chance to at least TRY to defend themselves, like Marius was able to do (his fight was so cool)

Louis needs more friends other than Daniel; and DEFINITELY some platonic Bipoc friends. Khayman, Seth, Nebamun, SOMEONE; who's refined and old and smart and bookish and kind that Louis can chill with. I know AR said David is Louis' best man at Loustat's wedding, but I effing hate that. That's my anti-headcanon; I rebuke it in the name of the lord. Let Louis & Gabrielle be BFFs ganging up on Lestat or something, IDFK, but please god not David.

Percival and Galahad from arthurian legend do kiss in the Holy Grail quest! I worded it as making out as a joke, they don't make out-

It's meant to be a platonic kissy obvs similar to how in Kirby you kiss when healing but it does happen

The text is actually multiple, as there are so many versions of the grail quest itself

If you pick up the physical book there might be a chance for the word to have been changed to "embrace", but some versions of it don't touch that word.

Ramble about the grail quest below, I finally have a perfect excuse to let out all my thoughts on the story and the grail knights hehehe

Percival and Galahad in general can switch to multiple dynamics based on authors, as arthurian legend is basically a bunch of people who inserted their knights ocs into this other story and then others recreated those oc's stories to make it cooler or fit in with those times. So Percival and Galahad can go from being the same person, friends, family and other things depending on what the author chooses. This applies to all characters in Arthurian Legend, there are no actual things set in stone. The canon is messy which is why sometimes u might see people hate a character but refer to it as "I hate Lanval's Guinevere" instead of the character as a whole because there are MULTIPLE versions of that character.

I'm gonna give a basic ramble about some of the story and show interactions I like between these two from multiple books after the ramble

HOWEVER I should warn and add a CW/TW that there's character death and implied su*cide (Galahad's death), the second one being more complicated due to how it's handled as Galahad wishes and asks for death and when it comes it's more of a "guys look he ascended he is now with Jesus Christ yippeee, what a cool act don't you wanna pray now" WHICH IS HMM KINDA BAD

I should also say that some parts of the Grial Quest are quite problematic as it puts down other religions and those who follow it as "sinners" or not worthy.

The grail has multiple interpretations as to why there has to be a quest for it, to spread religion, to heal the land and multiple others. Galahad is brought to the round table and does some cool stuff such as pulling out a sword from a stone similar to King Arthur and sitting on the Siege Perilous (a seat who kills anyone who sits there unless you are the chosen one). The Quest is related in some way to Joseph of Arimathea from the bible™ and in some interpretations the grail knights meet Jesus Christ himself. After achieving the grail Galahad asks God for death as he thinks he's lived long enough (he's like, VERY YOUNG??? AS IN HE IS KIND OF A LITERAL C H I L D??). Galahad seems to just inmediatly throw himself at objects that could kill him and is very careless which is kinda sad because even if he is supposed to be a character who we admire as God's knight he is also a kid who doesn't have the best parents and barely has friends, quite literally raised and born FOR the prophecy so it's no wonder he doesn't exactly know what to do after completing his "only purpose". I personally find the grail quest quite tragic, as I love Percival who's biggest dream was being a knight (he's also a babie™) and Galahad's death affects him enough to fully retire from it. Even if it's portrayed as him being "inspired" by Galahad's death enough to convert even more to religion. Not to mention he dies soon after anyways.

What was Xavier like as a teenager?

He was a mix between the problematic kid and the guy who is friend of everyone, in his teenage years xabier was quite feisty with the people who tried to mess up with him but he was a real nice guy to others as long as they didn't critice his family lifestyle(the punk life is the real way of life, at least to them it is).

He wasn't the best student but he wasn't the worst either, he excelled in music overall and probably learned how to do graffiti with his band in their teenage years(also probably got arrested by first and last time for graffiting a public place, never again).

He got in a lot of fights, that's another reason he started to go to gym(the main reason was the guy who gave him that scar under his eye) so he was pretty active since very young.

Also he had many anger issues as a teen, but he learned to control them as he grew up and managed to have coping mechanisms for this(like the gym, the music, graffiti and more).

This also was an age where he started to experiment with his style, mainly his hair, he tried to make the spiky hair of punk fashion but he ended up needing to shave part of his head instead🤣

I don't have a design for teen xabier at the moment but this are good examples of his fashion style in that age:

Yeah I speak Chinese! In fact I speak both Putonghua/Mandarin (the "standard" Chinese) and Cantonese (branch of spoken Chinese used in Canton regions, including the Guang Dong Province, Macau, and Hong Kong, where I am) I speak Mandarin with my family (except for my sister who's also trilingual, we code-switch)

Ok, here's a quick Chinese lesson! (bare with me, but sharing bits of Chinese stuff with people here is so much fun to me :D)

哥, pronounced "Ge" is the character that means "older brother". In the Chinese language, we have the habit of double a character, sometimes it's as a nickname or making the implication that it's cute, for example, 狗狗 Gou-gou, literally "dog-dog" referring to cuter dogs, sometimes it's just kind of there, and it's often used when it comes to referring to immediate family. For example 媽媽 Ma-Ma meaning Mom, 爺爺 Ye-Ye meaning Grandpa, and in this case, 哥哥 Ge-ge meaning "old brother".

But the thing is when it comes to close friendships, we still refer to friends as family/sibling terms. For example, I have a little sister figure/friend who's my sister's classmate, and she calls me (my name)姐姐 "Older Sister". But as people get older, they tend to use a single character, so for example, I call my older sister figure friend (her name)姐, the same word, but a singular character.

So in adult friendships nowadays, if you're close, you tend to use the singular character. Back in the old days young women also called their boyfriends 哥哥 while guys called their girlfriends 妹妹 ("Mei Mei". little sister), but that's outdated and no longer really used (unless in a teasing manner) and by today's standards kind of has problematic implications.

All this to say, Nick would most likely call Taylor 哥 Ge, singular! Potentially, he would call him Taylor哥 or as Chinese fans call him 泰勒 (“Tai Le”Offical translate of his name)/ 忒樂 ("Tei Le"Fan translation of his name)哥！

A quick note though, usually the younger will call the older one by their singular character honorific, so 姐or 哥, but the older one will call the younger on either by their name/nickname, or in rarer cases, with their double-character honorific. So if somehow the boys miraculously started speaking Chinese with each other, Nick might call Taylor 哥, but Taylor would still call Nick by his name.

A bad guy, who was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, an amazing man and one of the best actors, one of the best, who plays the bad guys, and even the good guys of our time, that's how we talk about the fact that this day has come, that today is the birthday of our most beloved villains or heros, including the "best player" of poker, Le Chiffre, or our favorite cannibal killer and psychiatrist Hannibal Lecter, Nigel or kindergarten teacher Lucas, German doctor Johann Struensee, antagonist and captain of the armed forces Cliff Unger, teacher Martin, scientist and former Nazi Jurgen Voller, or even a new character or hero, a soldier of the Jutland wasteland Ludwig Kalen in the new film "The Promised Land" who is trying to achieve his ambitions, goals and enters into an unequal battle and now risks not only his life, but also his connection with a small, problematic family that arose around him on the wasteland. By that time, Mads had earned several awards like Golden Eye and Bambi, and the awards of the Mallorca and Cannes film festivals, as well as Academy nominations for "The Best Feature Film", this is about The Promised Land, and deserves a lot more, not to mention the hope for season 4 of Hannibal.) it's a matter of time.
