The Future of Reideam

Been a long time since I last posted here, but I promise it will be for a good cause.

Back in my college years of 2016-2017, I was working behind the scenes of a new webcomic series. It would be my first, original work and one that would become my passion project. I liked it so much that I decided to work on it as part of my graduating integrative project and got a passing grade in the process. That project was called The Legend of Gamiserun, though it would eventually be changed to Reideam. Even while I was in university, I would still continue working on it, and at the end of 2019, I began to work on the outline for the prelude story The Sparrow and the Serpent.

...Then came 2020, and with it the pandemic. A lot of my motivation for Reideam went down the drain, and I soon began to adopt a hermit-like lifestyle. I still tried to work on character designs and such, but not nearly as much as I did. Near the end of 2020, I began to wonder if I really wanted to do Reideam as a webcomic. (Especially since I ended up putting all of my focus into my final university semester so I could graduate, but that's beside the point.)

I decided to express my concerns about it over on Twitter, debating on whether I should continue with my plans to make Reideam a webcomic or abandon my idea altogether and tell the story in a different medium, even if it may disappoint some people in the process. Especially since doing a webcomic as massive as Reideam (discounting the short stories to go with the lore) would take me up until my mid 40s to complete it. And as much as I want it to be my passion project, I also don't want it to become a burden.

One person commended me for thinking it over and for understanding that my ambitions could make me bite off more than I can chew. She was also confident that I would have a great story to tell regardless of the format -- something which I'd never thought I would hear from anyone. After all, the most important thing is that I tell MY story and the process I undergo to create it. Which would also mean going back to see if I can condense or omit subplots, character arcs, etc. And in a way, she was right!

Which is why I am going to announce my final decision:

Reideam will NOT be presented as a webcomic! It will instead be done as an illustrated novel, along with the short stories that go with it!

I'm aware that some people will be disappointed to learn about this, but this is the route I've chosen to take, and thus the route I would like to take. Maybe once the story's concluded, I might pitch a graphic novel version of it, but for now...it's going to be an illustrated novel. Plus, I really do not think a webcomic would be the best platform to present Reideam in, especially not after what happened to my hard drive (long story). After all, I believe it's better to not start the webcomic at all than start it and discontinue it after several pages or chapters because you were dissatisfied with how it's been going.

TL;DR, Reideam will not be presented as a webcomic, but as an illustrated novel with a possible pitch for a graphic novel version.

WARNING: Potential Deletion Soon

So as the title states, you might notice how I’ve been inactive from a lot of things (much of which I’d rather not talk about). And after thinking it over, I’ve decided that I might end up deleting this entire sideblog and start from scratch; just rebuild the whole thing from the ground up and make it into a proper blog for the content it was meant to have.

Doodled another of the Divine Dragons. This time, it’s Ventus, the youngest of the eight siblings.

Ventus is the Goddess of Perseverance and the Master of the Element of Valor (which is Wind). Excitable and free-spirited, there’s not much that bores this gal, though calling her a baby and saying that she can’t do anything and requires protection is more than enough to set her off. Her design is a mix between a Quetzalcoatl (feathered serpent) and a lindwyrm.

Something I’ve been meaning to do for the longest time, which was redesign the Feliolm race. Mostly because I was sick and tired of people tagging them as cats when THEY FUCKING AREN’T! NOT EVEN IN THE SLIGHTEST!

SO, I took it upon myself to add in some dragon-like embellishments (Radium was created by dragons, after all) while giving the two alternate forms a complete makeover. Eve ended up being my guinea pig for this one, and I like how she turned out.

Speaking of Eve, I also added a slight tint to her main body colour so it would avoid hurting the eyes. I also added a monochromatic version just for fun.

OK, But Real Talk Here

If I had chosen a different path and made Moondust Dreams into an animated series, I’d definitely want to have Roderick speaking with a mature, masculine voice as opposed to a soft, feminine voice.

Because let’s be real here, despite his small size and youthful appearance, Roderick’s actual age is 17, meaning he’s almost an adult but not quite. So it would make more sense for his voice to be deeper and more masculine to reflect upon how mature he is, and a feminine voice will NOT cut it for him!

I heard this month was Smaugust, so I decided to doodle one of the dragon characters from my upcoming webcomic, Moondust Dreams.

Introducing Glacius, the Goddess of Fortitude and Master of the Element of Patience (aka Ice). In other words, she’s one of the Divine Dragons, eight siblings known for having created the world of Radium. Though she has a relatively minor role in Moondust Dreams (and perhaps the Legend of Gamiserun trilogy as a whole), she’s still an important character nonetheless! She’s also supposed to be based on an Eastern dragon, with a hint of Qilin (hence the goat hooves).

My current goal for Moondust Dreams is to draw up references and designs for Welt, Eve and the new character I’ve been thinking about non-stop to complete the set of five main characters, then design the Divine Dragons (Pyrella already got redesigned, but she needs a ref) and actually get around to drawing some of the settings as well as the handful of antagonists...and also the members of the Starcrest royal family.
