im gonna claw myself apart. we watch netflix together and i keep a respectful and responsible distance; you lean against me to pause the screen. ask if i want cookies. i can’t stop staring at your lips. what? i say. i knew what you’d asked me even as you ask again, i just don’t want the moment to end.

          “ bold of you to assume I have two galleons in the first place. you’re not on, luce. unless you can take an IOU until I shake the loose change from peter’s pants that he’s tossed on the dorm room floor like a slob. Actually, just make it out as an IOU, but put Pettigrew’s name on it. he’s good for it.“

          ‘   as   much   as   i   trust   your   word  ,   rem  ,   i   can   do   with   no   prize  .   ‘m   not   much   of   a   betting   type  ,   anyways  .   never   seems   to   work   well   for   me  .   really  ,   i’d   do   just   about   anything   bar   swimming   in   the   black   lake   to   get   my   mind   off   these   papers  .   two   rolls   of   parchment   on   ovomancy   ?   who   does   mospus   think   he   is   ?   ’

“you’re an absolute gem, luce.” flicking her hair over her shoulders, dorcas followed lucinda’s gaze. laughter burst from the sixth year, shaking her head. “i’d sell every broomstick i’ve ever owned for one of binns’ rants about emeric the evil right now.” hell, she’d rather owe him several essays than what was actually coming for her. “no. uh, mighta transfigured a seventh year into a pig for picking on a second year and it’s possible madam hooch saw what i’d done right after i walked away.” dorcas’ attention turned back to lucinda. “don’t think she saw me, but rather safe than sorry.”

          her   nose   furrows   at   dorcas’   words  ,   though   her   mock   disgust   can’t   wipe   the   smile   off   her   face   from   the   others   laugh  .   ‘   piss   poor   trade   that   is  ,   if   you   ask   me  .   i   reckon   all   your   broomsticks   are   at   least   worth   a   lecture   on   uric  -   again  .   for   the   fifth   time  .   ’   she   shoves   her   bag   higher   up   her   shoulder   as   she   peeks   over   dorcas’   shoulder   before   meeting   her   eyes  .   ‘   at   least   tell   me   you   turned   him   into   a   warty   pig  .   pot   bellies   are   quite   cute  ,   y’know  .   ’

        “ oh, sod off - i’m just over a year older, right ? i haven’t gotten a good reason to take any blame for or from you.” there is no need to acknowledge that if given the circumstance, teddy would probably do just about anything for the female sitting across from him. the mischievous glint in his eyes reflect off hers, flicking the paper covering of the candy in her direction.  “don’t even joke about that - the evil eye is probably having a field day with what fate i’ve been destined to have.” lips now pucker at the incredulous imagery of his mother’s lecture if she even found out that his marks at school were barely above ordinary. “i think for my own safety, i wouldn’t even tell her - just say i’m taking a year long backpacking trip across the country or something.”   

          ‘   i   think   me   willingly   interacting   with   you   calls   for   some   form   of   payment  .   i’ll   be   cashing   in   next   time   a   late   night   castle   trek   is   needed  .   ’   the   corners   of   her   eyes   are   burning   now  ,   a   big   grin   overtaking   her   face  .   she   picks   the   wrapper   that   bounced   off   her   nose    from   the   table  ,   twisting   the   paper   in   her   fingers  .   ‘   probably   best   for   her   to   take   some   time   away   from   you  -   if   you’re   anything   like   the   way   you   are   here   at   home   it’d   save   her   poor   heart  .   ’   she   tosses   the   now   crumpled   paper   back   at   the   boy  ,   picking   another   sweet   from   the   packet  .   ‘   if   you   ever   do   go   backpacking   don’t   forget   to   invite   me  ,   though  .   i   heard   the   beaches   in   cornwall   are   a   sight  .   ’

      “ that is absolutely mad ! it has to be one huge joke. i swear if you’re messing with me, lucy, i will never be able to trust you again. – rotating ? ridiculous. ”

         ‘   if   you   think   that’s   mad   wait   until   you   hear   about   the   french  .   they   eat   frogs  .   real  ,   non-chocolate   frogs  .   ‘s   a   delicacy  ,   but   you   couldn’t   pay   me   enough   to   try   it  .   ’

         “ I’LL HAVE TO TAKE YOU ON THAT - though, i think we should raise the stakes a wee bit. if you lose, you’ve got to go on a date with me.”   

          ‘   works   for   me  .   here   i   was   thinking   you   were   gonna   ask   for   sugar   quills   instead  .   i’m   a   fierce   eye   spy   player  -   champion   of   sorts  ,   if   you   may  -   so   it’s   only   fair   for   you   to   go   first  ,   miss   jones  .   ’

To be honest Indy wasn’t really fussed that someone else was joining her at her table. And honestly, it could have been someone worse than Lucinda. As long sa the girl didn’t talk too much than it would be fun. “Oh I will give you that…. 11 year old gossip is tiresome” And she was sure that they had not been that annoying at 11. “I’m sure we weren’t that annoying”

          ‘   hopefully   not  ,   ’   she   shakes   her   head   following   a   snicker  ,   legs   crossing   on   the   seat   she’s   occupied  ,   ‘   but   i   have   to   admit  -   i’ve   blocked   out   the   majority   of   first   year  .   too   much   prepubescent   cringe   for   my   liking  .   keeps   me   up   at   night  .   ’

       “ i hardly imagine that he had good flavours in mind when he happened upon the formula. you have to give credit to bertie, though. most candy makers get grouped together but i can’t imagine a world where bertie beans won’t be thought about - as grotesque as they can be at times.” 

         ‘   probably   in   a   world   where   everyone   is   tired   of   feeling   sick   after   a   blue   bean  .   ‘sides  ,   if   he   really   wanted   to   leave   a   mark   he’d   broaden   his   products  .   i   reckon   if   bertie   released   a   line   just   of   the   nice   beans   there’d   be   a   market   for   that  .   supply   and   demand  ,   potter  .   ’

          ‘   right  .   well  ,   you   can   bring   that   up   with   the   sorting   hat   when   you   find   the   nerve  .   ’   she’s   partially   suppressed   an   eye-roll  ,   ‘   ‘sides  ,   that   beast   of   yours   was   clawing   at   a   fourth   year  .   probably   best   if   you   grab   her   before   her   tail   gets   stepped   on  .   ’

         ‘   nope  ,   ’   she   pops   her   p  ,   a   cheshire   grin   on   her   face  ,   ‘   and   to   not   have   to   worry   about   that   rubbish   is   incredible  .   you  ,   on   the   other   hand   .  .  .   shouldn’t   you   be   studying  ?   ’

Indiana just raised an eyebrow, and shrugged. Just because she was in a library did not mean she wanted to be interrupted. The library was supposed to be a place of quiet after all. “Oh? And heaven forbid one has to actually interact with first years”

          she’s   now   pulled   the   seat   opposite   from   indiana   out  ,   books   and   saddle   bag   occupying   the   once   devoid   table  .   ‘   no  ,   but   i   don’t   see   why   i   should   have   to   suffer   through   their   eleven-year-old   gossip  .   i   don’t   really   care   if   fionn  -   or   maybe   it   was   finn  ?  -   got   a   howler   today  ,   do   i  ?   ’

      “ but – what about when you can’t go anymore left ? does it just start over like one of those typewriter things ? seems like an awful lot of moving for some silly little tradition… ”

          ‘   good   guess  !   wrong  ,   sadly  ,   but   still   very   good  .   that’s   when   we   move   backwards  .   then   to   the   right  ,   then   back   up  .   once   it   reaches   its   original   spot   we   start   to   rotate  .   ’

      “ oh, so i am the bad influence ? i can think of a few times when you were the one getting me in trouble. you’re no more innocent than me - “ he discerns, egged on by her spectacle. the push and pull in their friendship made teddy’s days most of the time. it was so effortless for lucinda to drag the very best emotions out of him, the gasoline to a fire that already burned so bright. “even if she did that, molly can’t force me to read it. seems like an awful waste of time.” a dismissive shrug is all he offers, inviting himself to one of the sweets scattered on the table. “ it’s the last stretch of my time here - why waste it huddled in the library ? “      

          ‘   blaming   me   for   your   actions  ?   at   your   big   age  ?   i’m   disappointed  ,   ted  ,   really  .   thought   the   older   ones   were   meant   to   take   the   blame   when   needed  .   ’   she   pops   a   sweet   in   her   mouth  ,   smile   still   stuck   on   her   face   mid-chew  .   he’s   right  ,   and   she   knows   it  ,   but   really  ,   did   anyone   expect   them   to   not   sneak   to   the   kitchens   when   their   dorms   were   so   close  ?   ‘   sounds   like   something   someone   who   won’t   be   passing   their   newts   would   say  .   ’   lucy   leans   to   tap   the   side   of   his   head   mockingly  .   ‘   it   won’t   be   the   ‘  last   stretch   of   your   time   here  ’   if   you’ll   have   to   repeat   the   year  .   imagine   what   your   mam   would   say  .   ’

    sybill’s eyes are drawn to look away from the textbook she had been reading, an airy laugh bubbling from her lips. “puffskeins used to scare me as a child, especially when they were in a group. something about how long their tongues were.  they’re very cute when satisfied, i suppose -” her head lulls to the side as she thinks to herself. “but quite the rascals when you’ve left a mess in the kitchen after a large meal.”

          ‘   so  .  .  .   they’re   kind   of   like  -   dogs  ?   ’   her   face   is   scrunched   up  ,   eyes   pointed   on   the   custard   creature   in   the   magazine  .   ‘   they’d   be   useful   after   feasts  .   save   the   house   elves   the   burden   of   cleaning   up   after   us  .   ’
