concerts attended in 2025:
#9) G-Dragon / 08/23/25 Prudential Center, Newark, NJ
I’ve never seen a show where the performer subsisted on vibes and tenure alone. This is a compliment— Kwon Jiyong stood on stage and gave us the most minute performance laced with his own wacky tics and the crowd ate it up.
This is gonna be a long one so please hit the cut!
First off, as we walked in they handed us all a souvenir guitar pick for the show! I was genuinely stoked because I love myself a custom reminder of an event. It’s honestly one of my favorite things about localized merch— like yes, I have this because I lived this shit. I was there.

Secondly, I had to buy resale for this show, and the cheapest ticket for the main seats never dipped below 200. This man was a hot commodity.
I wound up getting weird tickets for $150 that somehow were a luxury box seat at the prudential center? I had my own VIP entrance, an escort to my seat, I got a special wrist band and a locker for my stuff, there was an all you can eat and drink buffet? It was bizarre. And somehow this was the best show for this for me. I met an amazing k-pop fan in her 50s and we yapped the whole time, such good vibes.
Anyway, the show—
I have been a fan of this man for so long that it felt surreal seeing him live.
He has both changed a lot and not changed at all over the years, and he actually talked at length about that. About how he learned to have more fun with life, laugh more and genuinely appreciate the world around him.
He’s always been a bit like a kid with too much cash, and in the 2010s he def ate up that rich musician lifestyle and partied like a US celeb might, and why wouldn’t he? He was hot shit, he worked with Diplo, he worked with Missy fucking Elliot. He had it all!
But I always wondered if he was really happy or if he was spiraling, letting the fame and money dictate his life. I wondered if he knew how groundbreaking he was being as a performer, if he knew what power he had.
and the answer seems to be that I was a bit too close to the truth. I am genuinely grateful for the g-dragon I met last night, a man showing a side of humility he used to keep fiercely guarded… while still allowing himself to flaunt his ego as well.
He wasn’t out here doing acrobatic stunts or trying to put out beautiful raw vocals, he had a great stage and a live band and a swagger that only he could pull off. It was truly delightful as someone who has seen so much of his journey through music to see him just out there having fun.
He still has a sort of innocence about him— maybe that’s the wrong word? An immaturity almost, a kid who wants to be a performer and the fans who eat that up. He’s really kind of a dork if I’m honest, but that’s why I love him.
I also appreciate that he’s continued showing his appreciation for black performers? I talked about this at length with my new friend at the concert who was a black woman. He might not be as vocal about it but he’s always loved black culture and has made Bad Choices in the past as a result of it, but it seems he’s gotten more mature about that. His entire live band that he seemed to adore quite a lot were black musicians, he’s continued collaborating with notable black musicians, he’s stopped wearing fucking cornrows. I know that’s not like, groundbreaking? But coming from a culture that hasn’t classically accepted that they take so much from black culture it’s kinda nice to see him not only work with but highlight the artists he takes inspiration from.
Anyway that’s my fucking essay about Kwon jiyong, Jesus Christ. I spent too much on merch, I don’t want to talk about it yall

Life can be incredibly cruel, and it feels like every time I forget this fact I am given a stark reminder.
But it also always has a way of using its cruelty to reveal the ways it’s also kind, that it’s not always going to be this bad, that you are not as alone in the universe as you may feel.

I was looking for a pic of a newt, took a wrong turn and ended up discovering Perenties. Absolutely delighted. What a creature !
They’re very lovely! Such cool lizards.
Unfortunately I don’t have newts on the site or in my files yet - the closest I have is a very blobby salamander. I will see if I can find some, although I don’t know what timeline that would be on.
