"Authors artificially inflate comment counts by thanking people, I can't find anything with a real comment count to read." No they fucking are not, they're grateful for engagement.

"I can't read anything under 100k." That's the majority of fics you're ignoring, most novels aren't even that long.

"I don't have time to look for the incredibly rare diamond in the rough, so I won't read anything below a certain amount of kudos, comments, and hits." Those fics are popular because people gave them a chance and then snobs like you found them.

"I won't read anthing with a single typos." You made typos in that sentence, get off your high horse.

"One singular author didn't thank me for commenting, I'm never commenting on any fic again so I don't get burned." You're punishing people because someone didn't give you engagement they don't owe you that they might not have seen.

"This fic is three months old, it's so old, it doesn't matter if I comment or kudos, it's old." Fics do not have expiration dates, comment and kudos.

Gentle reminder that very little fandom labor is automated, because I think people forget that a lot.

That blog with a tagging system you love? A person curates those tags by hand.

That rec blog with a great organization scheme and pretty graphics? Someone designed and implemented that organization scheme and made those graphics.

That network that posts a cool variety of stuff? People track down all that variety and queue it by hand, and other people made all the individual pieces.

That post with umpteen links to helpful resources, and information about them? Someone gathered those links, researched the sources, wrote up the information about them.

That graphic about fandom statistics? Someone compiled those statistics, analyzed them, organized them, figured out a useful way to convey the information to others, and made the post.

That event that you think looks neat? Someone wrote the rules, created the blogs and Discords, designed the graphics, did their best to promo the event so it'd succeed.

None of this was done automatically. None of it just appears whole out of the internet ether.

I think everyone realizes that fic writing and fanart creation are work, and at least some folks have got it through their heads that gif creation and graphics and moodboards take effort, and meta is usually respected for the effort that goes into it, at least as far as I've seen, but I feel like a lot of people don't really get how much labor goes into curation, too.

If people are creating resources, curating content, organizing the creations of others, gathering information, and doing other fandom activities that aren't necessarily the direct action of creation, they're doing a lot of fandom labor, and it's often largely unrecognized.

Celebrate fan work!

To folks doing this kind of labor: I see you, and I thank you. You are the backbones of our fandoms and I love you.

i was going over this art with said pal while doing the comm for her and i was like “damn this art is deceivingly lighthearted in contrast with the fic it’s based on 😂” then we dapped each other up

as to your question, in a nutshell yeah! i am interested in OC/canon! but mostly if they’re my friends’ OCs/self-inserts. i love hearing about them. i once did this commission of their oc that they shipped with h.u.n.k and also who hunk was in their headcanon. so fun. whenever a friend mentions an OC i turn into that monkey_neuron activation gif . so fun hearing/reading what people cook up with.

oddly enough i don’t have any of my own (but i do with my other interests; i suppose RE’s canon already suffices enough?). or if they count, i guess there was a stray cat i thought of for ada. and the OCs i did for the weshwii fic i’m writing, but they were as necessitated by the story and not i consistently poke around with. and there was probs a procreate canvas or two where i was trying to draw expressions and it was a self-insert of me being in ashley’s place aggravating leon while he tried to rescue me because i get confused and panic easily. nothing plot-worthy, just crack rescuer-rescuee dynamic since i don’t see leon *that* way like his stans mostly do. the canvas has been long deleted now haha

literally i look like a no-life ‘cause i keep drawing weshwii for days but i swear y’all i draw other stuff i have a whole ass tiktok account for my drawing timelapses 😭
