The Seed. a tarot spread for ostara.
1. The Soil.
Where have you grown? While it most certainly is the dawn of a new day, keep in mind your roots are proof that you have already come a long way. The soil is your past. What lesson can you learn from days gone by?
2. The Weed.
You wish to flourish and grow strong, but there is undoubtedly something that is stunting your progress. What are your obstacles, what’s holding you back?
3. The Seed.
Within your immediate future, which area of your life will you first see signs of growth? Which seed has taken hold?
4. The Sun.
The love and support of others is helpful. But the will to grow comes from within. Let the sun be a reminder of what you need to keep in mind in order to help yourself grow.
5. The Rain.
A blessing in disguise. Understand that not all things are always as they seem. Grey skies can sometimes bring you down, but like the sun, rain too is necessary. Through struggle, you will find strength. What blessing in disguise is upon your horizon?

How to start practicing magic
I keep getting this question in my inbox so I figured I’d post the answer publicly so I can refer to it instead. First of all though, there are tons of posts about this already and if you do a quick search through the “witchcraft community” tag or “witchcraft 101″ you’ll find a lot of great advice already circulating. What I’m going to outline here is my personal recommendation, and as for all my posts this is the “YMMV” disclaimer (your mileage may vary, i.e. do what works for you and don’t take this as absolute in any way).
Step 1: Pick a spell. Any spell. Seriously, it doesn’t matter. Well… okay, maybe don’t like… try to conjure Baphomet into your living room or something, but pick any rando spell that you feel like doing. Don’t worry about what it is, or who wrote it, or how “authentic” it is. Do these things matter? Sure, maybe, depends on who you ask, but you can figure this stuff out later. For now, just pick a spell. The only real guideline I’ll give here is that it should ideally be something with a measurable result within a reasonable timeframe. I’ll get to why later.
Step 2: Bake a cake. Don’t actually bake a cake (unless you want a cake, in which case by all means please bake a cake), but this is the part where you gather whatever it is you need for the spell and perform it as it’s written. Spells can in some ways be considered recipes in that you want to try following the directions first, and make your changes afterwards. This is especially true for a beginner or someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing yet.
Step 3: Mouth feel. The spell is done, congrats. You probably feel… nothing, tbh, maybe even vague disappointment. Why? Because this wasn’t really your magic yet, and there’s very likely something (maybe even a lot) missing. This is the most crucial part of your process. What were you expecting? What did you like, not like? It’s time to write this down, and if you’re the type of person who wants to keep a grimoire this is a great first entry. Were you hoping for more ritual? Maybe ceremonial magic is what you should look into. Did you want there to be more bubbling cauldrons? Try looking into hearth magic or herbal magic. Were you missing a chant, a poem? Look more into spellcraft and the power of words. Some key subjects you can look up: crystal magic, herbal magic, hearth magic, cosmic magic, spirit work, death magic, healing magic, bane magic, divination, folk magic, chaos magic, technomancy, sigilwork, spellcraft, hedge walking, deity worship, sex magic, blood magic, etc. If any of these sound appealing to you, do a google search and read about them a little more so you can decide whether or not you want to delve in a little further.
Step 4: The cake is a lie. This is where we drop the food metaphors, and get back to that thing I brought up in step one: measurable results within a reasonable timeframe. This is the part that seems to get lost the most in all the advice going around, and in my opinion it’s the second most important (the first one being that practicing magic feels good/right to you). Grimoires aren’t just supposed to be pretty lists of spells and correspondences, they’re supposed to contain spells that actually work. The key here is to figure out what feels right to you as far as method, and then to refine that method to achieve tangible results. If you already feel great doing magic, let me tell you… you’ll feel pretty fucking amazing when your magic starts having an actual effect on the world around you, and it shouldn’t take years of mastery for that to happen. Small magics and simple spells can be done effectively by beginner witches, and these are the things you build upon to form your craft. If your magic isn’t getting results, it’s not magic: it’s ceremony.
Step 5: Rinse and repeat. For most people there is a specific facet of magic that attracted them to it before they ever cast a spell, and while some people might know what it is straight off the bat most people don’t, and that’s fine. You don’t need to know what you’re doing right at the start, and making mistakes isn’t going to curse your house or open up a portal into the dark realms by accident (still assuming you’re doing beginner stuff and not trying to invoke dark spirits to do your bidding or something). The witchcraft side of tumblr can often look really serious and like everyone knows exactly what they’re doing all the time, but the truth of the matter is there’s a lot of trial and error and that’s exactly what magic is supposed to be. If you’re looking towards magic as something to provide all the answers for you, you’re gonna have a real bad time. It’s about looking at how other people have gotten to where you want to go, and forging your own route from there.
On a final note, I’d just like to add that if anyone claims to be an absolute authority on any given topic of witchcraft or occultism, be extremely fucking wary. If anyone is saying you need to pay x amount of money or buy x number of things to be a “real witch”, be extremely fucking wary. Witchcraft existed before money, before capitalism, before industrialization and consumerism.
As always, my inbox is open if you have any questions about this (or anything else). If I don’t know the answer, I can usually point you towards someone who does or at least give you a direction to search in. Happy witching!

I’m a very new witchling. As you seem to be well knowledgeable in the craft could you perhaps help me out? I’m seeing a lot of post about how Hoodoo and Chakras are off limits to white people. Could you compile a list of types of witchcraft that doesn’t culturally appropriate? Like a these paths are okay kind of deal. Thank you so much.
First of all, any snotty asks I get because of this post will be deleted. If you can be polite, I’m more than willing to hear you out - especially if I make any mistakes on this post!
This post covers the basics on open and closed cultures/religions.
Activities/items that are open to you:
I’m obviously not going to cover everything! Some of these could become appropriation if you are intentionally seeking it out or basing your info off a misinformed source, but in general they are pretty safe!
Altars
Ancestor connection/communication (to your ancestors)
Astral projection/travel
Astrology
Blood magic
Bone magic
Charms
Crystal healing/magic
Curses
Divination
Dream magic
Elements
Energy work/manipulation
Familiar work
Grimoire/Book of Shadows
Herbal magic/herbology
Hexes
Knot magic (there’s so many options besides dream catchers)
Meditation
Nature magic
Numerology
Oils/Essential oils
Poppets (NOT voodoo doll)
Potions
Sabbats
Shrines
Sigils
Smoke cleansing (NOT smudging)
Spirit work (Be aware of cultural boundaries)
Wards
SO MANY MORE. This is why I don’t understand when people complain about being restricted? Like respect the boundaries people requested and practice any of these amazing options (and more) instead? Wow!
*Again, feel free to let me know in a polite manner if any of these are not open*

Types Of Divination That Aren’t Tarot:
I’m tired of tarot cards and tarot readers everywhere…it’s awesome but there’s just too many of ya’ll. I just want my friends list to be more diverse. If I am gonna be honest, tarot isn’t most of your forte. Most of you just aren’t good at it. And further, you set yourself up for failure doing the job that 1000 other blitches are already doing and excelling at! But the good news is there are other options!
TYPES OF DIVINATION THAT AREN’T TAROT:
☕🍷Tasseomancy: Divination from tea leaves, coffee grounds, or wine sediment. Put that drinking or herb habit to good use!
🔮🍶🕯️ Scrying: Divination using a crystal ball (gastromancy), mirror/black mirror (catoptromancy), bowl of water (hydromancy) or other reflective surface. Can also use a flame or ashes from a spell (cineromancy/ceneromancy). Go get some full moon water and Git it.
📖 Stichomancy/Bibliomancy/Rhapsodomancy: Divination from sacred and spiritual texts. Yes, we have sacred and spiritual books that aren’t the Bible. Yes much of our oral tradition has been written down. No excuses.
✋🏾Chiromancy: Palmistry, divination through the study of the hand. There are hands all around you! You have two! Grab and go, fam, grab and go!
🌬️Capnomancy/Libanomancy: Divination through reading smoke. COME ON where my potheads at this isn’t hard. Where my cigar smokers, pipe smokers, roll a bleezy and let’s get to it!
💃🏾Pendulum Reading: Energy reading using an object or your body as the pendulum.
☠️ Osteomancy: Divination with bones, shells, and other parts of nature.
🗿💎Lithomancy: Divination with stones that have symbols drawn on them (runes, a popular British Isles practice but I’m down if you want to drawn indigenous symbols from your culture)
💰I Ching Divination: Utilizes coins and yarrow stalks. You should probably only bust out Chinese coins with holes if you are in some way Chinese FYI. But why not use coins from your hometown? We all have coins laying in the sofa cushions! We all have native twigs in the grass outside!
🏚️🔠 Spirit Boards: Divination with a talking board–the most commonly called a Ouija board. Used since Ancient times (China, Africa, Greece) and for much more than talking to demons. Like please just stop obsessing with the devil lmao.
⚕️Dowsing Rod: A spiritual stick used for fortelling and finding. I’ve seen a million crystal “wands” being sold by blitches, go get one and do this thing!
☁️🌨️Nephomancy: Divination of the clouds. They are beautiful. Best of all…they are free and you don’t have to store them. My husband just reminded me that an episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender was based on a woman who read the clouds ⛅
🌌✨Sortilege: Also called casting lots, ancient form of divination that is quite mysterious and open for interpretation. Found in the Bible 70+ times (most notably to throw Jonah to the whale) it involves taking a group of relevant objects and casting them for the truth. The objects can range from items to paper with words or symbols written on them. Typically all items are placed in a bag and you draw them out one at a time.
☀️🌅🌦️Heliomancy/Solaromancy : Divination of the rays and movement of the sun. We can all see the sun, really this one sounds easy. Why is none of you with Rah on your name jumped on this?
🌓🌔🌕 Selenomancy: Step 1, go outside and look at the moon. Step 2, ______. Step 3, profit. But for real ya’ll love the moon, go read her!
👨🏾👩🏿Physiognomy: Divination through facial reading. You seen faces before! Read them!
😪😴Narcomancy: Divination while sleeping /dreaming.
🌿🍃Phylomancy: Divination of leaves. Your divination pics will never look the same twice! Plus this is another free one!
🛣️Symbolomancy: Divination of things found on the road. I’d follow an IG of someone who did THAT in a meaningful way!
I hope this list inspires you to just jump in and try something new. Stop waiting for a teacher and just PRACTICE. The same way you all are doing with tarot. Feel bold and like you can practice something else…hell make up your own pieces and ways. Blaze a goddamn trail.
Signed,
Tahtahme

Before you defend males being witches I think you need to step back and realize why people are hesitant about involving males in witchcraft. Historically males were the ones burning and murdering females for witchcraft. It's no coincidence why women are more strongly associated with life/death, magic, etc. It's not transphobic to say this and that men deserve no acceptance in something women were persecuted (and in some areas still are). Women own witchcraft.
I’m sorry if you thought you’d be informing me of something I had no clue of, but earnestly this whole “Women own witchcraft” is the very most idiotic, Euro centric argument I have ever heard in Witch Discourse.
You need to get off your racist, sexist high horse right this instant.
I’ve done research and experienced witchcraft in my own culture and have knowledge of the witch hunts of the 1600s. It’s not a case of “The evil males murdering women!!!” It was a case of both women and men who used their religion to murder people horrifically and senselessly out of ignorance and fear. Both genders were the perpetrators and victims, both genders were the victims. Some women are more in tune to their spirituality and open to witchcraft due to the way western culture has brought women and men act. In other cultures, men are more likely to be spiritual leaders, or it may be perfectly egalitarian.
Saying that women own witchcraft because men in their culture fucked shit up for witches is essentially saying that atheists and pagans alone own witchcraft because Christians fucked shit up for witches.
Saying that women own witchcraft is like saying that poc own witchcraft because of imperialism’s damage to poc’s culture.
Saying that women own witchcraft is like saying that only people born to witch families own witchcraft.
Inherently, all people, males included, have the same amount of spiritual potential and energy. The way some people’s witchcraft works is recognizing that we are all witches, we are all beings with energies and spirituality and we choose to develop and partake in our own. Blocking off half the population for crimes they did not commit is disgusting.
Not to mention how GODDAMN RACIST THIS IS!
I come from Miami, and in Miami I’ve experienced a lot of the Santeria culture. Here, people mostly talk about it when there’s dead chickens washing up on shores after sacrifices or when dead animals are dropped off in bags at the courthouse, and I’m going to assume that you think witchcraft is revamped spells from the 1600s where animal bones are cutely replaced with some other herb followed by crystals sitting on the shelf.
However..
Santería is a culture of witches. Santería is very valid witchcraft, it is sometimes bloody and not cute and not adapted to Western Culture but that is the goddamn point. There are males that practice witchcraft in this culture, in fact leaders of all genders.
Native Indigenous culture have had Shamanism and related spiritualistic religions, there are so many tribes where witchcraft comes in the forms of women, men and non binary people such as the complex Two Spirit identity doing rituals, sacrifices, meditations… witchcraft is the practice of magick, and guess who practices magick?
These babies! See the things in grey! Those are called non western civilizations! Theses are places where thousands of individual communities exist, all with their own religions and native cultures! And most of them have all practiced some form of magick! Both men and women and non binary people!
If you’re a crystal witch, male or female or nonbinary Shamans probably made or sold you your crystals. Your lore could be from a Jewish Rabbi, of Jewish Mysticism. Or the Muslim intertwining of pagan and occultism. Or it could be the literal God Of Witchcraft, Thoth, in Egyptian culture. It could be an Alchemist, such as Gilles de Rais or Heinrich Cornelius Agrippa, all males murdered for their practicing witchcraft. The masks and skulls bought may very well be from Ghana tribes that were used as Talismans, or certain artifacts and rituals may come from Benin, West African tribes and communities.
You do not, never have, never will own witchcraft. No one ever will. And if you think men should be excluded, then only female, magick inherited African tribes victim to imperialism should own witchcraft.
Thank you for reading, and fuck Euro Centric supremacy.

Redesigned spread layout! What do y’all think?
Well…Now What?
I created this spread to cheer up a friend who had just been through a rough patch. Despite having come out of the other side of a looooong and difficult situation, she was feeling a little lost and empty so I really wanted to empower her but at the same time give her some hope.
Hope this is useful to you! Happy tarot-ing!

THE SUPER BLUE TOTAL LUNAR ECLIPSE/BLOOD MOON 2018
As many of you may know, this is a special month! On January 31st we will experience a blue supermoon which will reach a total lunar eclipse/blood moon. Here are some aspects you can work with during this upcoming rarity:
Protection
Strength
Beginnings of Positivity
Endings of Negativity
Overcoming Addiction
Healing
Ultimate Power
Spirit Work
Heightened Sensitivity
Psychic Ability
Knowledge and Wisdom
Developing Magical Skills
Divination
Honoring Divinity
Water Magic
Hexes and Curses (If you so choose.)
TIPS
Lately, a few people seem to have latched onto the idea that it’s just plain dangerous to perform magic during a lunar eclipse, especially if you’re a “newbie.” There is absolutely no logical basis for this theory. If you’re worried enough about the state of your psyche that you believe it could be somehow damaged by doing magic during an eclipse, then you need to either (a) not do magic at all, or (b) learn how to ground, center and shield so you won’t self-sabotage any workings you do.
Some practitioners see the eclipse period–which is generally pretty short–as being the equivalent of an entire lunar cycle packed into one brief event.
In some modern magical traditions, a lunar eclipse is considered a sort of metaphysical bonus round–in other words, any spellwork you do during this period is amplified and has a bit of extra power behind it. If you’ve been waiting around for a good time to do some serious spell work, this is it. Pick a goal that serves your or others in a big way.
Looking for something a little different? Raise power during the supermoon by catching the light in a magnifying glass and charging the altar or spell elements with it.
The supermoon creates an especially strong pull on the ocean tides, making it an ideal time to work with the element of water.
Perhaps your schedule doesn’t permit you to use this event at the height of its power. In that case, leave out some crystals or make some moon water to store the supermoon’s energy for later use.

Plant Allies For Gay Witchcraft
Herbs and flowers for magical workings pertaining to members of the LGBTQ community:
Calamus (Water/Moon) The name originates from the Greek myth of Kalamos (“reed”) and Karpos (“fruit”), a couple of gay youths in love. Karpos died while the two were having a swimming contest, and Kalamos, so struck with grief, allowed himself to drown and became the Calamus Reed whose sound in the wind was attributed to sighs of grief. Calamus, also known as Sweet Flag, channels gay masculine energies and the root is considered highly commanding.
Carnations, Green (Fire/Jupiter) Channel gay male energy. Carnations in general are considered highly protective, especially in areas concerning love.
Dill (Fire/Mercury) Dill seeds are considered the “semen of Hermes,” who was invoked during the 3rd century in Egypt for gay and lesbian love spells in Hellenistic (Greek) magick. Added to the bath, it makes the bather irresistible. Dill is known to induce lust when eaten or smelled, and is therefore carried in sachets or charm bags for this purpose.
Hyacinth (Water/Venus) Sacred to gay men and channels gay energy, though smelling the fresh flowers dispels works of “fascination”.
Lavender (Air/Mercury) Draws affection, especially from men, and can be used for gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender energy.
Persimmon (Water/Venus) Considered a “queer” fruit, it is carried by gay, lesbian, transgender and transsexual people to draw luck. Eaten, it offers guidance to your perfect lover. Carry each and every seed from a Persimmon you’ve eaten yourself to aid in image magick. It is said if a female eats 9 unripe persimmons she will change gender within the week.
Queen Elizabeth’s Root (Water/Venus) Also called Orris Root, it is powdered and burned by bottoms/submissives in incense or carried to attract dominant love into one’s life.
Safflower (Fire/Sun) The petals are burned as a love-drawing incense by gay men, often directly before going out to seek a new mate.
Sampson’s Snake Root (Fire/Jupiter) More commonly known as Echinacea, it’s usually used by a top to increase virility and sexual performance in gay sex magick. It can be infused into a tea to drink prior to coitus, or to be rubbed onto the body; or simply carried in a pocket to attract men. Dried Safflower petals steeped with Sampson Snake Root in Safflower Oil and rubbed on the back of the knees, thighs, and buttocks attracts a dominant male lover.

Witchy things to do when you’re low on spoons
As a witch with a chronic illness that can leave me extremely low on energy for weeks at a time, I’m always looking for witchy things to do that won’t leave me exhausted. Even simple spells draw from your own energy pool so these are the things I do when my pool is running dry.
Cleansing - Negative energy always builds up in my space during a bout of sickness, after a good cleansing of my outer I find my inner much more positive also. Here are some easy ways to cleanse
-Light some incense -Fill a spray bottle with water (moon water would be handy for this), herbs of your choice (I usually use sage), and some salt. Then go around to each room and spray some into each corner -Cleanse yourself by taking a bath or shower and using gorgeous smelling products -Open a window and let the fresh air blow positive energy into your house

Public Announcement for the Day
Witchcraft is a craft, a skill. It is not a religion.
You can have witchcraft without religion and you can have witchcraft with religion. Secular Witches, Wiccan Witches, Christian Witches, Pop Culture Witches, Pagan Witches, and many others are legit.
Witchcraft =/= Wicca. They are two separate things.
Witchcraft =/= Pagan. There are many witches who identify as nonpagan.
