According to her parents, Cassie Bernall exhibited rebellious behavior during her early teenage years, which included substance use and, at one point, suicidal ideation. Her mother discovered letters in Bernall's bedroom that expressed thoughts of harming her parents, prompting the family to enroll her at Columbine High School in search of a fresh start. Approximately a year and a half before her tragic death, Bernall attended a weekend church retreat that played a significant role in restoring her faith. Her father noted, "When she came back from that retreat, she was an entirely different person. We had gotten our daughter back."

On April 20, 1999, Bernall was killed by Eric Harris during the Columbine massacre. Witness Emily Wyant, who was hiding under the same table as Bernall, recounted that Harris slammed his hand down twice on the table above them and uttered "peek-a-boo" (as heard in a 911 phone call).

He then squatted down, balancing on the balls of his feet while gripping the tabletop with one hand. Harris then poked a shotgun under the table and fired, fatally striking Bernall in the head. His shot was characterized as imprecise, executed with one hand while in an awkward half-squat position. Following the shot, the recoil of the shotgun struck him in the face, resulting in a broken and bloodied nose.

The sawed-off shotgun was notorious for its powerful recoil, which can be observed in the Rampart Range video starting at 10:12.
In reflecting on the similarities between Cassie and Eric, it is noteworthy that both individuals faced significant personal struggles before their paths diverged. Cassie was more openly expressive about her depression, anger, and violent tendencies, often associating with a problematic peer group. Her drastic personality change was evident to her parents, who intervened after discovering graphic letters written by her and her friend Mona. They took decisive action, limiting her freedoms to guide her toward a more positive direction. Cassie's transformation was facilitated by her involvement in church, the support of caring friends, and a family that remained committed to her well-being, particularly through her faith in Jesus, which profoundly impacted her life.
In contrast, Eric Harris exhibited manipulative tendencies and maintained a façade that concealed his distress. It appears that his parents either overlooked or failed to acknowledge his cries for help.
Notably, toward the end of his journal, Wayne Harris, Eric Harris's father, documented the necessity of imposing additional rules on his son due to Eric's unwillingness to manage his sleep and study routines. He limited Eric's television, phone, and computer time and instituted a "lights out at 10 p.m." rule. He was aware that Eric had broken into a van and stolen items from it in January 1998. Furthermore, he had disposed of a pipe bomb found in his son's room just months before the shooting. Nate Dykeman stated in an interview with Good Morning America that the Harrises did not report these incidents to the authorities because Eric was undergoing juvenile diversion for the break-in at that time.
Despite these circumstances, on the day of the shootings, Wayne Harris informed police investigators that he had no reason to believe his son would be involved in such a violent act.
While the stories of Cassie and Eric share certain parallels, the outcomes were tragically different, culminating in the loss of Cassie's life at the hands of Eric.

(from "my secret place")
in my most secret place
there's an ugly secret hidden so my eyes
had always glistened, but now the whole earth
collapsed, the atmosphere frozen,
bodies that unsightly entangled rolling
over the frozen wasteland, and my eyes
no more glisten and my ugly secret
is no longer a secret and my most
secret place lost its meaning.
