Dinosaurs, Birds, and Crocodiles: a PSA
While the idea that birds are descended from dinosaurs is pretty well known even to the general public, I see a lot of misconceptions and misunderstandings of the concept, and I want to take a stab at clearing things up.
I'll try to not nerd out too hard and delve too deep into the nitty-gritty, to keep this accessible to a broad audience, so I'm simplifying a bit and avoiding scientific names and such, but here's a basic family tree to start with.
Each bracket here represents a grouping, and each animal on the left of the bracket is a member of that group but not any of the other brackets further to the right. Now that we have a visual, I'd like to tackle a few misconceptions.
#1: Crocodiles are (descended from) dinosaurs
If someone mentions birds being descended from dinosaurs online, chances are there's follow up comment saying "crocodiles are too." This is incorrect. While crocodiles are more closely related to dinosaurs than any other modern reptiles and did live alongside them, they are not descendants. They're more like cousins.
#2: Pterodactyls are dinosaurs
I know I said I wouldn't get into scientific terminology, but calling all pterosaurs "pterodactyls" is like calling all birds "sparrows!" With that out of the way, pterosaurs are also not dinosaurs, although they are more closely related than crocodiles are. Continuing the family metaphor, they're like siblings.
#3: Birds aren't dinosaurs, they're just descendants
This is where the family metaphor falls apart. Scientifically, you don't stop being a member of a group after a certain amount of evolution. An animal that is descended from a group is a member of that group too! Which means that birds technically are dinosaurs. Of course, in the common vernacular, we all know that when someone says "dinosaur," they generally mean "non-bird dinosaur!"
#4: Chickens are the closest relatives of T. rex #5: Specific birds are descended from specific dinosaurs
This is technically true in the sense that any bird is more closely related to T. rex than a crocodile is. But chickens in particular are not any closer to T. rex than ostriches or hummingbirds are! All modern birds are equally distanced from their prehistoric cousins. T. rex and Velociraptor didn't morph into modern birds, they fully went extinct with no descendants. Only a single branch of dinosaurs survived, and that branch became all modern birds.
#6: Archaeopteryx specifically is the ancestor of all modern birds
This is related to the previous misconceptions. The thing about evolutionary trees is: we never know exactly which species evolved into what. The best we can do is say "something very much like this animal" is the ancestor of a given creature. This is why Archaeopteryx is next to modern birds in the very last bracket of the diagram, rather than being a point on a line leading to them, and why none of the branching points have a specific animal at the nexus. We simply can't link specific animals together in a chain - only a series of nested brackets getting more and more closely related. When the nodes are labeled, it's with a family name, not a specific animal.

Hi. I love Hades and Hades 2 as much as everyone else but we NEED to make some noise because Supergiant is refusing to sign contracts with fair pay and anti-AI clauses. And they are straight up recasting VAs to punish VAs who are striking (sag-aftra has been striking for 7 months).

We really need to make noise here because this mistreatment will continue if we don't.
I'm providing a link for the company contact page in the replies. Please send them a comment on their contact page and encourage others to do so. Maybe even leave a steam review about it, idk.

I want one of those scenes in a dude bro film where “tomboy” chick has to wear a dress to go undercover or whatever, but instead of the guys drooling as she walks down the stairs, they’re like “k. U need to stop. Go put the cargo pants back on. You look super uncomfortable and awkward in that. Brutus, you go be the fake prostitute.”
