After visiting the Lumads staying in UP, I was able to learn more about their culture and about the things they are fighting for. It was a great eye-opener for everyone else who were not aware of the facts about the Lumads and about the things that were deprived from them for a long time. Being there with them during their discussion forum allowed me to notice details about them—details that showed their ethnicity, such as the fact that only a handful of them present there can understand Tagalog.
It was unfortunate that I personally cannot understand even a bit of Bisaya and it was a missed opportunity to learn about what they had to say during the discussion. But despite that, being able to see and listen to the small tour in their museum was already a lot to learn about.
In the museum, every object and image best represented their lifestyle and symbolized the importance of their history and existence. While listening to the tour, it was already a reflection on the significance of every ethnic group in our history and society. They are not to be disposed of nor ignored. Just as modernism and technology is important for the development of our country, ethnicity and evidences of our history are of equal worth. All I hope is that everyone else who does not know about the Lumads be able to see and hear the things we were given privilege to through our National Service Training Program (NSTP) activity.
In conclusion, this is proof that us students need the NSTP as part of our curriculum in college to expose the youth to the realities of what is happening in our country today. In fact, the ability to reach out to the world should be slowly and gradually taught to children. Overall, exposures and experiences like this is an essential part of a student’s development of critical thinking abilities to ward away the ignorance that lies deep in the mind of people nowadays.

Manilakbayan 2016
When we went into UP Diliman we were lost for a bit because we did not know where to go but we eventually found the direction of the Manilakbayan by asking directions. When we got into the base of the Lumads that was set up for them by UP we were overwhelmed and surprised of what we saw. We saw a community and that was very lovely to see. we can’t help but notice though that there were no smiles whatsoever on their faces. The talk was not yet commencing so we had time to explore the museum they have set-up on the side. We also got a chance to interview Ate Julie - who told us their story and how they have come here. Afterwards it was already time for their talk, and more tribal leaders narrated their story.
The highlight of their stories where the deaths that they have narrated. We were shocked to know of how violent these deaths happened and we would not wish them upon anyone.
The group (Team Basic) genuinely felt sympathy for the Lumads. Just think about how it would feel if you could not go into your home, a place that is rightfully yours to begin with! It is saddening but at the same time it angers us as well and it frustrates us that up until now nothing is being done for them.
Through this activity we embody Pope Francis’ challenge to become a beggar -- to think, to feel and to do by sympathizing and by putting ourselves in their shoes in our way of thinking, We have to look at this issue in their perspective and see how much this affects them even if to some people it has no affect whatsoever.
The government should prioritize the Lumads wants and needs to save their ancestral and cultural heritages. They should pay attention and give immediate response and actions towards the issue on the militarization of the lands that solely belong to the Lumads. If this is not given immediate attention soon enough there would no longer be indigenous people in the Philippines who could still share their rich and vibrant cultures.
As a group Team Basic would want to start by educating those who have no knowledge about this issue. It is important and vital for the whole Philippines to know that this kind of issue is taking place and that such issues are timely. Informing the public would help raise awareness and then further strengthen the Lumads claims towards their rights.

When I went to the Manilakbayan last October I didn’t know what to expect because it was a whole new experience for me. Naturally, when I got there and so the Lumads, I was a bit overwhelmed and surprised of how they have set up some sort of base there wherein they very much look like a organized and functioning community. When the talks started I was happy to have understood them because I myself am half bisaya and some of the words they used are familiar to me and some are even spoken in our household. Their stories made me sympathize with them, and it made me so much more angry with our government and how they have treated these Lumads. What I do not understand from the Lumads though is how they blatantly support the Duterte Administration who have done nothing for them so far. They are so hopeful that President Duterte will change their lives and I am scared for them because I do not want them to get their hopes up at this point in time. Even though they have successfully set up base in UP Diliman I for one want to see them back in their land, in their HOMES where they rightfully deserve to be without being killed or oppressed by the military presence their. I call out to our government to help the Lumads in their quest for their rights.

Interview with Ate Julie
So yung yung Manilakbayan.”
Ø “Actually, eto ay first time na mangyari a may pambansang minorya o yung pambansang lakbayan. Actually, dati is manilakbayan lang yun e ibig sabihin minano lang yung naglakbay, ngayon ay abot tayo ng anim(6) thousand na mga lakbayani galing sa Mindanao, galing southern tagalong, galing ng cordillera, at galing ng central visayas atsaka ng Panay. So galing sa iba’t ibang katutubo.”

Growing up in the province and understanding their dialect, I can empathize with the Lumads for having a strong will to fight against the deprivation in own their lands despite the difficulties they had to encounter along the way. They started families, formed communities and established their lives as a society in the land they called their home. As the youth of today, each and everyone of us has a purpose to fight for our own rights and along the way, we can also help the Lumads fight for theirs knowing that they are only a minority group in comparison to us living in the congested urban sprawl of Manila. If there is one thing the youth can advocate for the Lumads, it is to hear their cries, support their cause and become a voice for the voiceless and the oppressed.

These indigenous people bring calls asking to stop the attacks in their communities, destruction of not only their environment but also their livelihood and to bring forth peace. These people are asking for our help and understanding hence the seminar not to mention how much they want our government to give importance to their issue.
I had a great experience associating myself with people I haven't had experienced being with before. Then, I am aware of the fact that there are people less fortunate than the ones in my environment but I haven't socialized with such people before. I was both excited and nervous at the same time. I'd be honest that I was nervous because I can't anticipate the atmosphere and the turn of events on that day. But I realized that that was the point of NSTP – taking the risks to step on the world you haven’t been to because you want to genuinely hear and empathize those strangers in the least way you can. I was excited of the fact that later that day I can say that I took the risks and stepped out of my way. It was such an inspiring experience. I didn't know that those people I once called stranger could actually make me realize how grateful I should be with what I have now. They made me want to feel grateful of the things and people I have in my life. Overall, our experiences are both lessons and inspirations.

In the MANILAKBAYAN 2016 that we attended at UP Diliman, there is a lot of tribes from different parts of the country who had their journey from their home to Manila with the hopes of having their ancestral domains back and attain back their rights that were taken from them. To have their homes taken away from them by foreigners would be a total injustice. Their home is where they sleep, eat, work, or just simply LIVE. If they lost their homes, it would be hard for them to adjust live a new life in a new place starting from nothing. Those ethnic tribes are the ones who preserves our culture and our history and this kind of treatment, they don't desrve this.

Hearing the story from one of the Lumads, I felt bad about them and how they are treated by the government. It is very unfair taking their lands and their rights. And I respect them for going all the way here, away from their hometown to voice out what they feel. I just wish that there would be equality and peace soon.
