1. The Ren & Stimpy Show
Tumblr media
There are so many Reasons why Ren & Stimpy is my favorite animated series of all time.Let me describe the ways. The show debuted in 1991 as one of the original 3 Nicktoons.Out of those 3 Ren & Stimpy was the most interesting, and the best out of the bunch easily. The 1980's in animation was more known for creating brands to sell toys.Nickelodeon seeing this decided why don't we give creators more control. So they created Nicktoons if Ralph Bashki's Mighty Mouse started the new Creator Driven cartoons,Ren & Stimpy solidified it's arrival.
The show was edgy and dark, and it harkened back to the golden age of animation. It took everything fun about cartoons and put them all in one show.It was ripe with new ideas and old ideas as well. The show took advantage of their being shows that came before it,and you could tell.It was filled with homages instead of cliches.
The art of the show was simply amazing. You can tell JohnK and crew worked their ass off making an amazing show week in and week out.The most noticeable thing was the great use of acting by the characters. At times Ren can go into a nutty insane rant and you would believe every damn word of it.This is especially noticeable in "Space Madness".An episode I like to call the greatest piece of TV animation I've ever seen.
Ren & Simpy was an amazing show that was filled with great moments that has yet been duplicated. It was a show that helped change everything.A show I believe is the greatest of all time.

2. Dexter's Laboratory
Tumblr media
This is the cartoon that put Cartoon Network on the map.Dexter's Laboratory debuted in 1996 during the early years of Cartoon Network. The Show officially started on Cartoon Network's What-A-Cartoon show in a short created by Genndy Tartakovosky.
The protagonist of the show was Dexter a very short  boy genius who had built a secret Laboratory. The only problem he has is that he can't get his stupid older sister Dee Dee to leave. She's in there day in day out,and whatever he does he cannot get rid of her no matter what. The show also had secondary shows such as Dial M for Monkey (A show about Dexter's pet monkey who is secretly a superhero) and The Justice Friends(A parody of superheroes where the heroes live together in the same apartment)
Dexter's Laboratory was a very well done show.It had everything done right from production design all the way down to writing. The show was top notch. It had a unique design that was either very angular or very curved. The design seemed like it was inspired by Hanna Barbara and Jay Ward, but I personally think that they took the style, and transformed it enough to the point where it becomes something on it's own.
Dexter's Lab lasted multiple season with Genndy until eventually the show went on without him.Nevertheless Dexter's Laboratory is a groundbreaking show.A show that has earned it's spot in cartoon history.

3. King of the Hill
Tumblr media
After Beavis and Butthead ended Mike Judge wanted to do another show. That show was King of The Hill.Apparently Mike Judge was inspired by "Do The Right Thing" to create the series. He liked the dynamic of the old men at the corner all talking to each other. It made him think that he should make a show like that set in his Hometown of Texas, and King of The Hill was born.
King of The Hilll was a basically an animated sitcom that was so good in my opinion that it put alot of Live-action ones to shame. The show centered around propane salesman Hank Hill and his family and Friends in fictional Arlen Texas.Hank was very conservative to the point where he became unlikable.Even with that the show still flourished and was hilarious.
King of The Hill was a great show that had great writing. It lasted 13 great season on FOX.I would have to say it very a very consistent show, and Mike Judge did a great job on it.

4. SpongeBob SquarePants
Tumblr media
Who knew a show about a talking sponge could be so fun.Spongebob Squarepants made it's television debut in 1999.The show was quirky, fun, and pretty unpredictable. The odd nature of the show really pulls you in.
The show is basically about a Sponge who lives in a pineapple under the sea.He works at a fast food joint, and has crazy adventures when he's off.The cast of characters of this show really play well off of Spongebob. To me he's best when he's pestering Squidward, but I think most people love his friendship with Patrick.
Some have said that the show has declined in quality, but I say it's still fine. When it goes on to get to Simpson's level then we have a problem.Spongebob has grown to be a household name, and has gone on to have a plethora of merchandise. It's a great show that I think is one of the best things Nickelodeon has ever done.

5. Adventure Time
Tumblr media
I know that this show is barely in it's fourth season, and I may be jumping the gun putting this show so high, but it's a fantastic show.Adventure Time was created by Pendelton Ward in 2008 for Nickelodeon, and Nickelodeon being the idiots that they are decide to pass on the show.Eventually Cartoon Network picks up the show and it debuts in 2010.
Adventure Time is a very surreal animated series about a boy named Finn and his best friend Jake the Dog.Together they live in the land of Ooo,A post-Apocalyptic version of earth that has turned into a weird fantasy land.Finn and Jake are constantly having adventures in the strange Land of Ooo.Whether it's fighting the Ice King or traveling to the Nightosphere.
Adventure Time is well written and has a very unique art style that's meshes perfectly with the tone of the rest of the series. The show has potential to be a classic, but to me it already is.

6. Beavis and Butt-Head
Tumblr media
Back in the 90's MTV was mostly known for music videos and The Real World. Then they started to foray into animation. One of their series was Beavis & Butthead.A cartoon created by Mike Judge about two young boys who aren't the sharpest tools in the shed.Beavis and Butthead may have been idiots, but the show was brilliant. It seems that they were written to be stupid in a very smart way .
Beavis and Butthead would often get into wild adventures causing miscellaneous mischief, but when they weren't out causing trouble doing stupid shit, they were in the house watching music videos. They would pretty much blast the hell out of sucky videos or they would rarely like them.
Recently MTV brought Beavis and Butthead back for a new run,and it was as funny as it was before. The only major thing that they changed was the addition of them skewering more than music videos.I really hope it comes back for another season, but if it didn't it would still be a landmark in pop culture.

7. Rocko's Modern Life
Tumblr media
Nickelodeon in the 90's had a lot of quality cartoons, and Rocko's Modern Life was easily one of them. For a show that was on Nick it sure featured some risky adult humor.I mean Rocko worked at a sex hotline before. As a kid you don't really notice them, but as an adult it's pretty damn clear.
The show centered around a wallaby name Rocko  who lives in the town of O-Town.There he has friends like a steer named Heffer and a Turtle named Filbert. He constantly gets himself into numerous crazy situations that he usually gets out of in unconventional ways.
The show itself was very hilarious. It had a great sense of humor. The show was kinda surreal and grounded at the same time.It was an ingenious cartoon that was a great addition to Nickelodeon's lineup.

8. The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show
Tumblr media
"Hey Rocky Watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat".One thing Bullwinkle could never do is pull a rabbit out of his hat.Bullwinkle was a certified klutz, and he was a very lovable one indeed. The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show was a quick witted always on it's toes animated series.A show that helped inspire almost every other cartoon I ever enjoyed. The show itself was hilarious, and it's still to this day one of the finest animated series of all time.
Rocky and Bullwinkle were a 2 man crew who would constantly have to stop Boris and Natasha.Boris and Natasha were a duo of evil spies who wanted to takeover the world, and for some strange reason they had to deal with a Moose and a Squirrel. There were other segments that appeared on the show such as Peabody and Sherman,Dudley Do-Right,and Fractured Fairy Tales. All of which were great segments.
Rocky and Bullwinkle was a creation of the genius that is Jay Ward. Some may say the art style is primitive don't realize the complexity and brilliance of the designs.Designs that changed animation. This show is a fantastic show, and I highly recommend it to anyone who hasn't seen it.

9. The Critic
Tumblr media
I have no problem saying that Jay Sherman is my spirit animal.Jay Sherman was a film critic on ABC's (Later moved on to FOX) The Critic. The show was created by Al Jean and Mike Reiss of The Simpsons. The show was off the wall hilarious. The Critic was a very quick witted, well written show. The show starred Jay Sherman a NY film critic who had his own television series called Coming Attractions.
Jay Sherman was very sarcastic person who kinda hated everything. His film reviews mostly ended with him saying "It Stinks".He was very mean spirited when it came to films, but when he was outside of work he had heart, and was a very nice person. It's like film brought the worst out of him.Another thing I liked about The Critic was the strong cast of characters. Not a single character was wasted in my opinion. The show made great use of everyone.
The Critic was really quotable, and it also had some hilarious film parodies that would put Family Guy to shame,It's just sad that the show never got the run it deserved.

10. The Boondocks
Tumblr media
Originally starting in The Diamondback (University of Maryland's school newspaper). The Boondock eventually became nationally syndicated, and popular enough to become an animated series on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. The Strip and cartoon was created by Aaron Mcgruder. The show center around two kids who live with their grandfather in the suburbs of Woodcrest. It features a wild array of characters from the Crazy self-hating Uncle Ruckus to the Gangsta white guys Ed & Gin Rummy. It has a great supporting cast.
The Boondocks is a show that touches on numerous social issues, and puts an entertaining spin on them.A Spin that's both hilarious and insightful.Personally I think they do a way better job than South Park when they tackle things.
Since the show can be controversial. It has also garnered some criticism and has had some episode banned in the US,but to be honest I could care less. The show is fantastic.I really hope we'll be seeing more of Boondocks for many years to come.

11. Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends
Tumblr media
Cartoon Network is a great place for creator-driven cartoons. One of the fantastic creators was Craig McKracken the man who created the Powerpuff Girls. After The highly successful Powerpuff Girls ended he then went on to create Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends.Foster's was a super-stylized animated show using Flash,Photoshop,Illustrator as well as other programs to create it's animation. The style was kinda unique. It was an evolution of sorts to PowerPuff Girls style. It was a lot more  graphic than usual.
Foster's is a home where Imaginary friends go to find new homes. They stay there and await adoption(Like an actual foster home)The stars of the show were Mac and his imaginary friend Bloo.Bloo stayed at the Home becauce Mac's mother did not want him to stay at the house anymore. So Mac has a deal with Foster's where as long as Mac shows up to visit Bloo daily they wont put him up for adoption.
The house in this show was filled with crazy character. The crazy and Zany Imaginary friends were very fun to look at,and see what kind of weird characters they would think of next. The show also was very funny.Which is never a bad thing.Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends was an excellent show that is often forgotten.

12. Batman: The Animated Series
Tumblr media
The DCAU all started with this show.Batman :The Animated Series was a groundbreaking moment in superhero history. It was an all ages cartoon that had the depth of a more mature series. The show took a look at Batman from a more noir type of style. While most other action cartoons at the time were clunkier and had more of a realistic feel to it. The look of this show had a very art deco feel. The stylized nature was brilliant and worked perfectly. It was a style that DC continued to use for a multitude of there shows, but it all began with this one.It helped them stick out.
Batman's rogue gallery was used effectively.None were used better than the crown Prince of crime,The Joker. The Joker (along with Harleyquinn) was the most developed villain  in the entire series.Joker was voiced by Mark Hamill.Hamill did an amazing job (as did most of the cast of the series)voicing The Joker. The chemistry between The Joker and Batman was fantastic.
Batman The Animated series had a lot of positives. So many that it would take forever to list it was a great show that had a fantastic run.

13. Batman Beyond
Tumblr media
If you thought the future of Batman in Batman Beyond was going to be anything like The Dark Knight Returns consider yourself disappointed.Even though it's nothing like that story ,It stands up in it's own right as a fantastic addition to the DCAU.Batman Beyond is a continuation of Batman the animated series.Bruce Wayne is now too old to be Batman so he chooses a young heir (Terry Mcginnis) to take his place.
The future of Gotham seems to be very Blade Runneresque. It is a very Cyber Punk/Tech Noir world now.A world that makes sense due to the latter series' Noir elements. Most of Batman's former foes are either all dead, retired,or in some instances still active (Mr.Freeze,Ras Al Ghul). There are a lot of new foes running around Gotham, and all of them very dangerous.
Batman Beyond is a great Batman series that can stand on it's own,and a great continuation of the Batman mythos started in Batman the animated series.

14. Futurama
Tumblr media
Often called Matt Groening's other show.Futurama can now rightfully stand on it's own.Debyting in 1999 the show centered around Phillip J.Fry a guy from the 21st century who gets accidentally frozen, and awake 1,000 years into the future. The show is very hilarious which is supplemented by the wonderful cast of characters. You have the foul mouth robot Bender,The feisty cyclops Leela, and a ton more fantastic characters.
Futurama not only can make you laugh. It also can pull at the heartstrings. With episodes like"The Sting","The Luck of The Fryish",and of course the infamous "Jurassic Bark". You may find yourself shedding some tears.Futurama is like a love letter to Sci-fi.It's a great show that I'm glad is back.

15. Hey Arnold!
Tumblr media
I love nicktoons.Nickelodeon has a very good staple of cartoons, and Hey Arnold! is one of them.Hey Arnold! started in 1996.The show to me feels like a new generation of The Peanuts. It was fun ,it was hip,it had all the makings of a great cartoon.
The star of the show was Arnold.A very down to earth 9 year old who must solve everything, but I really thought he was the least interesting character on the show. The star of the show in my mind was Helga Pataki.Helga Pataki may be one of the greatest characters in cartoon history.Helga was the school bully/outcast who was secretly obsessed Arnold. She was a character with many layers and an interesting home life.
Hey Arnold! lasted 5 seasons and even got a feature film.It was a great cartoon.A great cartoon that's bound to be a classic.
