Final outcome. I quite enjoyed this for the final project; it effectively incorporated many of the skills we had learnt in a very satisfying way. I do feel it was a bit of a rush towards the end, and with more time, I'd have liked to have refined the outcome a little more. However, in fairness, that is largely due to my own time management issues, rather than the course outline itself. I can say I personally feel that I have an even greater appreciation for character designers, having taken this elective.

Jeff questionnaire
Interrogate your Character
and their World
20 Questions
1 How old is your character?
20
2 What's their relationship with their parents? (If their parents are dead then detail the story and their past relationship if you can find it) (If they have a different backstory again, then enter that here)
He was close with his parents growing up; however, their current whereabouts are unknown.
3 Who raised them (ignore if listed in 2)
Parents
4 Do they have any siblings? - If so, describe them and their relationship(s)
No
5 What is the main thing, or some things that challenge them?
His main challenge boils down to feeling obligated to work alongside his best friend's team of criminals that he puts together as they seek to take control of their city. This also leads to him feeling internally conflicted. This also means he is constantly challenged by the public and law enforcement.
6 Describe two or more relationships with other characters – what characterises those relationships?
With his best friend Phil:
He has a very complicated relationship with Phil; they grew up very close, but Phil is currently under the control of a mad scientist seeking to control their city. Jeff feels that if he goes along with this, he will be able to track down the scientist in question and save his friend.
With his friend Jeremi:
Jeremi is a member of Phil's team he puts together. Jeremi is very outgoing, in contrast to Jeff, and they often don’t get along, especially given Jeremi’s flagrant attitude towards crime and morality. Despite this, they eventually come to get along quite well.
7 Does your character have children – If so, how does your character relate to them?
No
8 Does your character have a mentor?
Not in a traditional sense, he is mainly inspired by his friends and family.
9 How has your character’s upbringing shaped their view of the world?
Jeff’s view growing up was very optimistic, at times being challenged as he grew up dealing with the turmoil he would come to face. He still keeps some of that optimism, especially in how he sees people as innately good, though this is also challenged at times.
10 Does your character have chosen accessories/clothing/tools/weapons
He chooses not to carry weapons as he has his supernatural ability if necessary.
11 Does your character have any notable enemies?
His primary Enemy is the scientist in control of Phil, though they do not meet until much later. The local government and authorities also act as a sort of opposition, as much of what he and his associates engage in is very illegal
12 Describe your character’s world
He lives in a world not all too different to ours; however, technology has advanced much quicker, and people have a variety of alien and anthropomorphic features.
13 What are your character’s goals in life?
He primarily just wants peace and safety for himself and those around him, primarily Phil. Unfortunately, everything seems to be working against this goal.
14 What stops your character getting towards their goals?
A treacherous home life and Phil’s nefarious activities work in direct opposition to the life Jeff is trying to create.
15 What personality flaws does your character have and how do they manage them?
Jeff’s primary personal issues come down to his apathetic attitude and how he enables those around him, even if he has issues with their actions. His insistence on saving his friend, being his primary goal, often results in harm coming to those around them both.
16 What special talents does your character have – were they innate or did they develop them, or discover them – if the latter, then how did this happen over time?
The ability to use a string lightning strike type of attack, though unable to properly control it initially, leading to a reluctance to use it further.
17 Is your character a loner or gregarious – or something more complicated (if so, describe)
Naturally a loner aside from his best friend Phil. Later becomes more socially able through being put into more challenging social scenarios
Your additional questions
What is your character’s occupation
He is not employed, and mainly gets his possessions from op shops and theft.
Where does your character live
He is often moving around with Phil and his associates as they are often on the run; they usually move around different grungy flats and other cheap urban accommodation.
Does your character have any pets
He has a dog named Jed

Jeff word cloud, same principle as the previous post, this time applied to my own character. I found this a bit more difficult than the Bojack equivalent, however, as it made me delve deeper into aspects of my character that I had not pondered at length before, a challenging but also rewarding exercise.

Bojack Horseman word cloud for a team assignment analysing a pre-existing character. I enjoyed this activity as I was already a big fan of the source material, so it came rather naturally. My teammates Rico and Andrew also made a mood board and a questionnaire, respectively.
Rico's Questionnaire:
Interrogate your Character
and their World
20 Questions
1 How old is your character?
Answer: In his 50s, 57 as of the series finale
2 What's their relationship with their parents? (if their parents are dead then detail the story and their past relationship if you can find it) (if they have a different back story again, then enter that here)
Answer:
Super bad. Both of his parents were very neglectful and, in some cases, hated BoJack. His father, Butterscotch Horseman, is dead in the present of the story. He got challenged to a duel by a person who didn’t like his book. Before the duel started, he asked if the person actually didn’t like his book, then tripped, hit his head on a rock, and died. BoJack’s mother Beatrice horseman resented BoJack for being born. She blamed him for her life being terrible. She dies during the story from dementia.
3 Who raised them (ignore if listed in 2)
Answer
4 Do they have any siblings? - If so, describe them and their relationship(s)
Answer:
BoJack has a much younger estranged half-sister, that his father had in an affair with the house keeper, Hollyhock Manheim-Manheim-Guerrero-Robinson-Zilberschlag-Hsung-Fonzerelli-McQuack. At first thinking BoJack is her biological father, Hollyhock reaches out to him before learning the truth that he is her brother. Their relationship starts off as fairly wholesome, but as she learns more about him it becomes progressively tense until she cuts him out of her life entirely.
5 What is the main thing, or some things that challenge them?
Answer:
BoJack struggles with addiction throughout the series. He is also a bad person and constantly facing the consequences of his actions.
6 Describe two or more relationships with other characters – what characterizes those relationships?
Answer:
Tod Chaves: Tod is a 20 something (30 as of series finale) guy that BoJack let live in his house rent-free for a good portion of the story. BoJack is often very rude to Todd, telling him to “clean up his shit” and that he wants Todd out of the house, but he also considers him a close friend and has once sabotaged Todd’s career so that he had to keep living with him.
Mr. Peanutbutter: Mr. Peanutbutter is kind of BoJack’s rival. He was the star in ‘Mr. Peanutbutter’s House,’ a show that was a rip-off of
BoJack’s show ‘Horsin’ around.’ BoJack is jealous of Mr. Peanutbutter for being more liked, respected, and successful. Mr. Peanutbutter however is a literal golden retriever of a person and only wants to be BoJack’s friend.
7 Does your character have children – if so, how does your character relate to them?
Answer:
BoJack does not have children
8 Does your character have a mentor?
Answer:
BoJack did have a mentor, Herb Kazzaz, who he met early in his career at a stand-up event that BoJack bombed at. Herb became BoJack’s mentor and later created / directed the show BoJack starred on, ‘Horsin’ Around.’ They’re friendship ended when BoJack didn’t stand up for him when Herb was being kicked off the show.
9 How has your character’s upbringing shaped their view of the world?
Answer:
Being raised by his horrible parents who hated each other gave BoJack a very bitter outlook on the world and people in general.
10 Does your character have chosen accessories / clothing / tools / weapons
Answer
11 Does your character have any notable enemies?
Answer
12 Describe your character’s world
Answer:
BoJack’s world is very whimsical in comparison to the incredibly dark story. It’s filled with talking animal people and regular humans but meat does still exist in the setting and people do eat it. It is otherwise a fairly standard modern setting with cities and technology.
13 What are your character’s goals in life?
Answer:
BoJack’s primary desire is for people to like / respect him.
14 What stops your character getting towards their goals?
Answer:
He is constantly making bad decisions that end up hurting himself and the people around him.
Also his severe substance abuse issues.
15 What personality flaws does your character have and how do they manage them?
Answer:
BoJack is incredibly bitter, selfish, self-sabotaging / loathing, and irresponsible. He is constantly running away from the consequences of his actions until he causes more problems and has to run again. He manages this with drugs, alcohol, and latching on to other people. These methods are not very effective.
16 What special talents does your character have – were they innate or did they develop them, or discover them – if the latter, then how did this happen over time?
Answer:
He’s a fairly good at acting by the end of the series. This was not an innate talent. BoJack only really started to improve his skill when he started on his first acting job outside of ‘Horsin’ Around,’ where he needed to actually act. For a time before the series finale, he was a college acting teacher.
17 Is your character a loner or gregarious – or something more complicated (if so, describe)
Answer:
BoJack is complicated. He has very little patience for the people around him and often prefers to keep to himself at social gatherings but also has the capacity to be charismatic at times.
Your additional questions
18 Does your character have any romantic interests?
Answer
BoJack goes through a multitude of both serious and casual relationships throughout the series, most of which end poorly. One of his more notable relationships was with his costar Gina Cazador on the show Philbert. This ended when BoJack strangled her in drugged up haze during a scene.
19 What is your character’s home like?
Answer For the majority of the show BoJack lives in a lavish apartment in Hollywood. It’s filled with expensive art, a pool, and has a great view.
20 What does your character do for work?
Answer BoJack is an actor, most notably known for being the titular horse the sitcom ‘Horsin’ Around.’

Trying out some different colour schemes, ended up sticking with the first, but it was fun to test out some others and aspects from them will undoubtedly make it into the final outcome. The first was just the closest to my desired look.

Values exercise, for this lesson, we looked into values and how they can change the perception of images. I tried out a couple of poses before deciding on the final for the exercise.

Jeff Silhouette experimentation, I feel I personally could have pushed myself further with this exercise, but it was interesting to try out different proportions and "antenna" designs to see how they would affect readability. I already felt fairly confident in my initial design, leading to a bit of a lack of iteration, unfortunately.

Jeff 100 word character brief
Jeff lives in a semi-sci-fi version of the 2000s in a dull, ultra-consumerist city. He is accompanied by his best friend Phil and, reluctantly, his associates as part of a rag-tag team seeking to take control of the city, a goal he does not share with them. His personal goal is simply to ensure his and Phil’s safety and security, though the odds are always stacked against him. He struggles to morally contend with the actions of the people around him and how he is potentially enabling them. He must also contend with constant pressure from law enforcement.

Character concepts reflection
For this assignment, we were tasked with writing up 3 ideas for a range of unique original characters. I personally found it challenging at times to think of ideas and fit into the set criteria for motivations, setting, challenges, etc... But ultimately, I think it was essential for the final task ahead to get the hang of creating well-rounded characters with specific goals and ideals.
