She'd got Gawain on to the military campaigns of General Tacticus, which were suitably bloodthirsty but, more importantly, considered too difficult for a child. As a result his vocabulary was doubling every week and he could already use words like disembowelled in everyday conversation. After all, what was the point of teaching children to be children? They were naturally good at it.

Happy Terry Pratchett Day, on what would have been his 77th birthday.
To mark the occasion, we are putting our focus on reading for all, so we invite you to pick up a book, celebrate those championing literacy and access, share the stories that impacted you most, and celebrate your local libraries, who make this accessible across the country.
Terry was a firm believer that reading should be for everyone, and we continue to champion this ethos. No matter the age, format, or genre, there's a power in words and stories to transport readers.
For those looking to bring a little bit of Discworld into your, or younger readers', lives, Gollancz have given us some free sample colouring pages from the Discworld colouring book to share and print at home: https://terrypratchett.com/free-to-download-discworld-colouring-pages/
A continued and hearty thanks to all who keep Terry's work and legacy alive, and mark days like today in his honour. And to those who continue to fight for access to reading, for the importance of libraries, and the worlds that await within the pages of books - we thank you.

Having finally read Moving Pictures (Discworld #10, Industrial Revolution #1) I think it's entirely possible that I'll refer to popcorn as "banged grains" from now on🤣🍿

Heinrich had a reputation locally for cunning, but Ankh-Morpork had overtaken cunning a thousand years ago, had sped past devious, had left artful far behind and had now, by a roundabout route, arrived at straightforward.

The hay meadow was high on the hill behind the farm, overlooking the cornfield. She watched him for a while. It was the most interesting technique she had ever witnessed. She wouldn't even have thought that it was technically possible. Eventually she said: "It's good. You've got the swing and everything." THANK YOU, MISS FLITWORTH. "But why one blade of grass at a time?" Bill Door regarded the neat row of stalks for some while. THERE IS ANOTHER WAY? "You can do lots in one go, you know." NO. NO. ONE BLADE AT A TIME. ONE TIME, ONE BLADE. "You won't cut many that way," said Miss Flitworth. EVERY LAST ONE, MISS FLITWORTH. "Yes?" TRUST ME ON THIS.

MISS FLITWORTH, WHY DOES NOT THE COCKEREL CROW PROPERLY? "Oh, that's just Cyril. He hasn't got a very good memory. Ridiculous, isn't it? I wish he'd get it right." Bill Door found a piece of chalk in the farm's old smithy, located a piece of board among the debris, and wrote very carefully for some time. Then he wedged the board in front of the henhouse and pointed Cyril toward it. THIS YOU WILL READ, he said. Cyril peered myopically at the "Cock-A-Doodle-Doo" in heavy gothic script. Somewhere in his tiny mad chicken mind a very distinct and chilly understanding formed that he'd better learn to read very, very, quickly.

Everything feels better when I remember the Tiffany Aching quote “It doesn’t stop being magic just because you learn how it works.”

The wizards ran down the corridor "How can you kill ghosts?" "How should I know? The question doesn't usually arise!" "You exorcise them, I think." "What? Jumpin' up and down, runnin on the spot, that kind of thing?" The Dean had been ready for this. "It's spelled with an 'O', Archchancellor. I don't think one is expected to subject them to, er, physical exertion." "Should think not, man. We don't want a lot of healthy ghosts buzzin' around."
