Tessa’s face flushed so fast it was like someone had flipped a switch, the heat climbing all the way to the tips of her ears. Her mouth opened—closed—then opened again in a helpless stammer before she finally exploded.
“You—! Are you actually serious right now?!” she burst out, pointing a shaking finger at J like that alone might undo the last thirty seconds. “I was teasing you, Jaybird! That’s all this was—just me winding you up! There was never a deal, there was no agreement, no contract signed in blood saying ‘yes, please shove your entire face in mine!’ What the hell was that?!”
She ran both hands down her face, groaning as she started pacing short, jittery steps across the pod. “And the way you just went for it! No pause, no hesitation—just bam, like you’ve been waiting for this exact opportunity since the day we met. I didn’t even have a chance to blink before it happened, and you’re sitting there like you’ve just won a bloody trophy!” She stopped mid-step to jab her finger at J again, cheeks burning brighter. “And don’t you dare give me that smug ‘be careful what you wish for’ look—because I wasn’t wishing for anything! There wasn’t even a wish! You just—took it upon yourself to… ugh!” Throwing her hands up, she turned away, muttering under her breath as if J couldn’t hear every word. “Bloody ridiculous… never again… not falling for it… course like a cat’s tongue… should’ve seen it coming but nooo…”
"J..." Tessa’s voice was a soft murmur, barely audible over the low hum of the room. She stepped closer, slowly, deliberately, like she was afraid that one wrong move might send J bolting. Her hands reached out, gentle but insistent, cupping J’s face with surprising care. Her palms were cold, fingers rough with grime and dried fluid from whatever repair job she’d last walked away from.@tessajameselliottm
J shiver went up J’s spine upon feeling Tessa’s cold hands. Her eyes narrowing, out of slight annoyance due to the grime. She alowly glaring into the abyss of the helmet’s visor. Not entirely trusting her tone of voice nor her careful actions.
Tessa? You’re acting weird. What is it?..

Tessa jerked back, hands flying up as she tried to push J away, coughing and wiping at her mouth with the back of her glove.
“—Oh my god! I didn’t actually expect you to do it!” she blurted, voice cracking halfway between shock and a nervous laugh. Her cheeks flushed hot, and she shook her head like she could rattle the memory out.
She pointed accusingly at J, still wide-eyed. “And—what the hell—why is your tongue so coarse?! It’s like kissing sandpaper with a pulse!”
Her voice pitched higher, trying to cover the fact that her ears were burning red. “You can’t just—ugh—throw yourself at me like that when I’m teasing you! There’s supposed to be, I dunno, build-up!”
She looked away quickly, fiddling with the cuff of her sleeve, muttering under her breath. “God, I can still feel it…”

“You can keep pretending you’re tough and in control, but I know what I see.” She leaned in just a hair closer, enough so J could feel the breath but not cross any real line yet.
“Here’s a thought,” Tessa said, voice dropping to a softer, coaxing tone. “Stop fighting it. Stop playing games. Just lean in—give me a real kiss, no holding back.” “Show me you’re not just all bark. Because, honestly? I’m dying to see what happens if you actually try.”

Tessa’s eyes flicked down to J’s cheeks, the faint glow of her blush impossible to miss even through the light scatter of the visor. She let her wrist go slack in J’s hand, watching as J’s fingers closed around the tie’s fabric.
“I mean, seriously—are you sure you’re not enjoying this?” Tessa teased, voice low, careful not to push too hard. “You’re blushing like hell.”
She leaned in just enough that J could feel the warmth off her suit, then drifted back with a soft laugh. Her posture relaxed, shoulders dropping from their earlier tension.
“It’s… kinda fun, messin’ with you like this,” she admitted, a hint of genuine warmth creeping into her tone. “Seeing that reaction—makes all my stupid jokes worth it.”
Tessa glanced down at their intertwined hands for a moment, then met J’s eyes again. “But, hey, if you want me to stop, just say the word. Though I gotta say, I’ve never been one for gentle victories.”

Tessa straightened, brushing a stray lock of hair back with a soft huff. She folded her arms and tilted her head, giving J that familiar “I dare you” look. She took a slow step forward, closing the distance until they were only an arm’s length apart
Her fingers curled tight around J’s tie, the fabric bunching in her grip as she gave it a sharp, deliberate tug. The heat radiating from Tessa’s body contrasted sharply with the cool, polished metal of J’s frame. Her warm breath brushed over the exposed plating at J’s neck, carrying the faint scent of oil and something sweeter—familiar, human.
Tessa’s voice came low, intimate, every syllable deliberate. “Y’know, for all your scowls and sarcasm… you’re really bad at hiding when you’re rattled.”
Her lips hovered just beside J’s ear panel, close enough to trigger every sensory ping in the bot’s system. “I could say anything right now, and you’d remember it for days. Weeks. Hell—maybe longer.”
She loosened her grip on the tie, only to slide her hand higher, knuckles brushing against the edge of J’s jawline. Her tone shifted, dripping with a dangerous mix of teasing and sincerity.
“Thing is… I don’t even have to kiss you to make you crack.”
“Look, I could tell you why I’m doing it. Could give you the whole ‘because I like you’ speech or some bull about breaking your walls down. But that’s cheesy. And we both know you’d roll your—” she caught herself, smirk edging back on her face, “—your ‘emotional support syringe’ eyes at me.” Tessa leaned against the bulkhead, gaze steady.
“So here’s the deal: I enjoy watching you squirm. It’s fun. It’s honest. You try so hard to keep everything buttoned up, and when you let one crack show—well, it’s the only time I can actually see you instead of the commander or the robot.”
She paused, as if weighing whether to add something more genuine. Finally, she shrugged.
“Don’t overthink it, Jaybird. I tease you ‘cause you let me. You could have brushed me off, punched me, flown away—but you didn’t. So maybe next time you feel that heat creeping up your hull, just admit you’re curious. Hell, admit you like it.”

Tessa didn’t flinch. If anything, the corner of her mouth twitched higher, her visor glinting as J leaned in closer. She let the silence stretch until it almost felt unbearable, before finally answering with a low chuckle.
“There it is. That fire.” She tilted her head just a fraction, deliberately matching J’s lean so their faces were only inches apart. “See, this is why I do it—‘cause you can’t stand not knowin’. You’ll puff your chest, bare your teeth, try and stare me down, but underneath it? You’re curious. You hate that you’re curious.”
Her voice softened to a near whisper, dripping with smugness. “Why now? Maybe I just like watchin’ my lil Jaybird squirm. Maybe I’ve thought about it more than I’d ever admit. Or maybe…” She dragged the word out, letting it hang heavy between them. “Maybe I just wanted to prove I could get under your skin whenever I damn well please.”
Tessa let her hand hover at J’s chin again, not touching this time—just close enough to remind her she could. Her grin was sharp, taunting, but there was a glimmer of something more in her tone. “You’re right, though. I do have a reason. But where’s the fun in tellin’ you flat out? Nah. I think I’d rather let you stew in it.”
She leaned in the tiniest bit further, breaking the stalemate by deliberately brushing her face against J’sjust enough to make it feel like a kiss that wasn’t.
Then she pulled back with a wicked smirk. “Face it, mate. I don’t even have to touch you. I’ve already won.”

Tessa tilted her head, her thumbs still resting lightly against the curve of J’s jaw. She didn’t move back if anything, she leaned in closer, just enough to make J feel cornered by the proximity.
A sly grin tugged at her lips. “Ohhh, what’s the matter, Jaybird? Can’t handle me bein’ soft for once? You look like I just threatened to rip your tail clean off.”
Her voice dropped, playful but tinged with something uncomfortably sincere. “Maybe I just like seein’ you squirm. Makes a change from all that broody glaring you do.”
Tessa let her fingers trail slightly, brushing grime across J’s cheek with deliberate slowness, watching the other drone’s LED eyes flicker in response. She chuckled under her breath, low and amused.
“Relax, mate. I’m not about to kiss ya… unless…”
