Petro knew they couldn’t stay there any longer. They had to flee. He moved forward, taking Zatt’s arm and hooking it across his shoulder. “You have to stand.” Zatt shook his head, eyes still shut tight. “I can’t,” he whispered. Petro didn’t know if it was because of his ankle or his spirit. He knew they were both broken, and he knew he would have to be the one to speak or neither one of them would survive. “Hey, look at me,” Petro demanded, gripping Zatt’s arm tighter. Zatt’s eyes slid open, and Petro saw his own pain reflected back in their depths. “We’ll go together, okay? You and me.” It took Zatt a moment, but he finally nodded. “You and me,” he repeated in a whisper. Petro hauled Zatt to his feet, letting the other boy lean into him. As they hobbled away from their burning home, Petro vowed, right then and there, to never leave Zatt again.

I wrote this chapter in practically one sitting. I have never had a chapter flow out of me the way this one did, and nothing I wrote was planned. All I wanted to do was focus on Petro and Zatt's Order 66 flashbacks. I ended up with an intricately wonderful relationship instead.

If Ganodi had known she was walking away from them for good, she never would have left that table. She would have sat there all night long, facing the end of the war beside them. But it had been a normal day at the Jedi Temple on Coruscant, and there had been no reason for her to suspect the end was near.

Despite everything inside her protesting, Katooni turned and ran. She ran away from Master Balhou. She ran away from her friends. She ran away from the only safe home she had ever known, which had just been torn down by the people she once trusted. Katooni ran and ran until breathing became more painful than what she was running from. And then ran further still.

He jumped down from the desk, turning to find his four friends looking sullen. The flurry that had enveloped them in their rush to make a plan had been tossed out the window with the rope, leaving behind stillness and uncertainty. Petro had the sinking feeling he might never see them all again.

Before he could lose his nerve, Zatt threw himself around the corner and ran. He ran for the Jedi. He ran for his friends. He ran for the unknown future that loomed in the distance, the one he knew he wouldn’t be able to face without Petro. Zatt ignored the pain shooting up his ankle into his knee. He ignored the clone trooper’s yells for him to halt. He just ran.

He couldn’t turn back now; he could hear one of the clones chasing at his heels. Gungi prayed to the Force that Byph would survive, that he would find some place to hide and make it back to the infirmary. Then he shoved all thoughts of his friends and the Jedi out of his mind and ran.

Byph gripped the blaster in his hands in an attempt to stop the room from spinning. You can’t help them now, he told himself. But you can help the others. With one last look at the unconscious clone trooper, Byph turned and ran out of the room, racing back towards the infirmary where he had left Ganodi.

Anytime I rewatch TCW Gathering arc, all I can think about is what happened to these kids the night of Order 66. It haunts me.

You'll have to excuse my friend here," said Petro, voice pulling him back to reality. He slung his arm across Zatt’s shoulder, squeezing it slightly. A reminder of something solid. "He's a bit starstruck. Always wished he could be a trooper like you." Lucky for Petro, Zatt's fear far outweighed his annoyance. Otherwise, he would have slapped him upside the head. Instead, Zatt nodded, playing along. “Yes,” he said, finding his voice. “I missed my chance to be an Imperial cadet.” One conversation about Imperial training and ten minutes of his life he’d never get back later, Zatt and Petro were waved through the gate, strolling into the city. When the Imperials were out of sight, Zatt shoved Petro. "I always wished to be a stormtrooper?" "Hey, it worked, didn't it?" Zatt didn’t answer, letting the silence of the morning settle between them. He was very aware of Petro’s worried side glances, but he couldn’t bring himself to revisit that day. Not now, in the middle of a strange town where there were plenty of ears on them already. Instead, he shoved his hand into his pocket and pulled out a tiny screwdriver, tinkering with his loose comm link as they walked. The tool felt heavy in his fingers, grounding him. It gave him a point of focus, somewhere to direct his brain to keep him from spiraling. Tightening screws was easier than looking at Petro, so Zatt kept his eyes down when he finally spoke. “Thanks,” he said. “I didn’t mean to freeze.” “I know,” Petro said. For once, he seemed to have nothing more to say.

This was the beginning of Petro and Zatt, though I didn't know it at the time. All I knew was that the two of them had the kind of relationship that goes beyond explanation. They were everything to each other, right from the start.
