One thing about DWJ is that she wants her characters to feel real. She has said this in interviews! And I love this, mostly because all of her characters come off as little gremlins.

At one point in Howl's Moving Castle, Sophie snores so loud she wakes herself up.

In the companion book, Castle in the Air (no relation to the Ghibli movie Castle in the Sky), the main character has been raised in a society that is hyper-polite. So this man is saying flowery speeches and referring to people with titles that are a full paragraph, but this man is so judgmental, he's just insulting every other person he meets in his head.

In the third book, House of Many Ways, the main character, Charmain, is utterly useless at basically everything because she's extremely sheltered and always has her head in a book. At one point, she decides to turn over a new leaf and become more self-sufficient, starting with being nice to her roommate and picking up the clothes off her floor. She then comes back to find her roommate has cleaned her room for her. An absolutely lovely gesture that is met with utter rage.

And what a mood, I too have been mad at someone for reasons they had no idea about.

(Rant incoming)

I'm neutral to positive about winter. It's not my favorite season but there are things I enjoy and look forward to (in part because my mother noticed that hating a season is hating a 1/4 of the year, and thus a 1/4 of your life, and that's quite a lot. But that's a story for another time)

I like watching falling snow reflecting off street lights late at night, skiing is my favorite and only sport I like doing and that can only happen in winter, and it is the perfect time for nesting and I Love being cozy. But there is one thing I forget about every year. It's So Dry!!!

Every year I forget how dry winter is! Like I'm aware that winter is dry but I forget, or who the hell knows block it out, how bad it actually is. Every year I'm scrambling for the lotion that I haven't used in months because I spent the summer sweating. All of sudden I'm once again digging through my house to find chap stick. And I don't know what's happening this year, but it feels worse. Worse in the way that I can't even go to sleep without a humidifier in my room or I'll wake up with a sore throat. I feel my nasal passages drying out as I breath right now.

Sure, the furnace has a humidifier but my mom doesn't want to turn it on because she's worried about the condensation. And I get that, I Do. We have an old house with hard wood floors and drafty window in old wood sills. But there has to be another option! There has to be something between Rainforest and The Air Stealing The Moisture Directly From My Skin!😭
