La Casa Muda (2010) - Gustavo Hernández
This Uruguayan Horror film was recorded with a Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR photographic camera. Shot over 4 days it does an incredible job at keeping you on the edge of your seat with your hand ready to shield your eyes.
Only two lamps and few light tubes were used to light the set. Budget : $6000.
You might be familiar with the American remake starring Elizabeth Olsen.
Stick with the original. Totally underrated.

Hello! I used to be a horror fan, but stopped watching it, since I never had anyone to talk to about it. But I've recently started to get interested again. As you post different movies on here, I take the time to watch them, and it's really great to get all the exposure to such an awesome genre! Do you have a list of must-see movies that you would recommend to someone who's just getting into the genre?
Thanks! I usually recommend people who are new to the genre or are kind of still skeptical about the genre to start by watching things that are kind of cross-genre. I don’t want to just have someone jump into an obscure slasher like The Prowler right out of the gate.
If comedy’s your thing, I’d check out An American Werewolf in London, Shaun of the Dead, Tucker & Dale vs. Evil, Night of the Creeps, Return of the Living Dead, Bubba Ho-Tep, Evil Dead 2, What We Do in the Shadows… things like that are really good examples that are fun, funny and also play on classic tropes so that if you’re really interested in them, you might go back and check out the movies they’re referencing.
If you’re more into drama, psychological, I’d check out Misery, Candyman, Silence of the Lambs, Bram Stoker’s Dracula, and maybe Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer if you can stomach it.
For sci-fi, I’d go for the heavy hitters like Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, The Thing (1982), Event Horizon, The Fly (1986)
While Scream kind of plays on awareness of the genre, it’s the movie I think it’s one that really proves to be an accessible gateway for a lot of people.
As for things I just think are plainly and simply the best of all time:
Psycho
Frankenstein
Bride of Frankenstein
The Wolf Man
An American Werewolf in London
Halloween
The Thing ‘82
The Fly ‘86
Poltergeist
The Exorcist
The Changeling
Carrie
The Shining
The Texas Chain Saw Masacre
Videodrome
A Nightmare on Elm Street
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors
Wes Craven’s New Nightmare
Scream
The Exorcist
Exorcist III
Night of the Living Dead
Dawn of the Dead
Day of the Dead
Martin
Creepshow
Zombie Flesh Eaters
The Beyond
High Tension
Audition
The Devil’s Backbone
Horror of Dracula
Nosferatu
Nosferatu ‘79
Fright Night
Near Dark
The Lost Boys
Pumpkinhead
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer
Those are the biggest ones I could grab off the top of my head.

The Conjuring (2013) Amazon Online/iTunes ★★★
Ok, ok, so I’m really biased because I love James Wan. If you’re not into his movies or his kind of horror, just go ahead and skip this because I have no shame in the James Wan game.
(ps. I know I should have watched this a long time ago, but somehow I ended up watching the other two Conjuring movies before this one, but whatevs)
James Wan has this wonderfully happy way of making the audience want to be scared to death. It doesn’t matter what kind of horror you’re into, this movie will make you want to do some paranormal investigation of your own; and if you do any at all about this movie, you will be fairly disturbed to find out that these guys stuck really well to what genuinely happened to the Perron family in the early 70′s.
The way the story builds up, the style, the transitions, literally everything about this movie kept me glued to the screen. You can tell Wan has seen his classics- The Exorcist, The Amityville Horror, and Poltergeist- and it plays out perfectly in it’s own unique new style in that the typical jump-scares just don’t happen for a long while into the movie as well as obviously the effects and methods of creeping you out are modern and very well done.
Lights go out, clocks stop at a specific time, crosses are knocked off shelves, all the good stuff you know and love takes place, but not right away. I don’t really like when a movie starts out with BAM! Here’s the evil thing you need to be afraid of! And luckily, the immense build-up pays off in exactly the right amount of time. An hour into the film, I suddenly realized I’m clinging to my chair, hoping these Warren guys pull out the rosary already and banish this thing for god’s sake.
Again, I know I’m biased, but look at it this way- the actors are believable, the soundtrack is bangin’, and even if you aren’t really into this sub-genre of horror, you gotta give this gorgeous cinematography a chance.

Invoked (2015) Netflix streaming ★
Yet another found footage film I've stumbled upon. I didn't really like the characters, but I always feel that way watching college kids trying to party and it turns spooky kind of thing.
The effects were the exact kind of thing I adore in horror movies. The turning of the camera and catching a glimpse of something sitting in the corner type thing. I enjoyed the last 20 minutes of the film, but the build up was slow and I felt really bored for the majority of the film.
I'm all about creepy found-footage goodness, but I honestly just didn't really like this one. I found myself checking the time and seeing how much longer until the good stuff started happening.
Unfortunately, it was already rated poorly on pretty much every website I checked, but I still wanted to give it a chance. Imdb says the whole thing was shot in 3 days, and honestly, it shows.

Creep (2014) Netflix streaming ★★★
This movie. Hm. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. For some reason I thought this was made a long time ago? Like in the 80′s or even before then, but it was made and released in 2014. As it turns out, this was made after “a series of conversations” between the only two actors (who are also the directors and writers of the film) in the movie. After reading that, it definitely gives this movie a more disturbing vibe.
The film follows “Aaron” as he takes up an ad to film a guy who promises a good wad of cash in return for “8 hours of your time” and nothing more. The two guys definitely have a good chemistry on screen and the title could not be more appropriate.
Honestly, I can’t believe how simple this was laid out and how genuinely unnerving the whole thing felt. It was kind of a found footage film, in that everything was more or less filmed by Aaron, but the ending is kind of screwed up, so is it found footage? Maybe?
I was certainly on edge for a majority of this film, becuase the man from the ad, Josef, was so kind and sweet and very charismatic. Knowing that, but also knowing this was a thriller, yeesh, I couldn’t make heads or tails of what I was going to be seeing. I thought it would be more fucked up than it was, but that kind of adds to the eerie setting of the whole film. It wasn’t as fucked up as the gore-porn I’ve come to expect modern horror to be, which in turn made me feel almost dirty when it was over.
Patrick Brice, the film’s director who also plays “Aaron”, has made it public that there is to be two more Creep films within the next few years and thank god for that. There’s so many questions I have for this Josef guy.
Creep 2 is tentatively set for 2017.
For a weird stream-of-consciousness liveblog of the film, click through!
I’m gonna do something different and more or less live-blog this. Here goes? I guess?
Ok, so right off the bat, I didn’t realize this was such a recent movie. I thought it was an older one? Obviously I was wrong.
Aaron is so handsome?? Wow.
Josef is already weirdly creepy and I can’t even imagine were this is going. Oh god. Peachfuzz.
This guy keeps hugging Aaron and it makes me feel werid. He also keeps running ahead on this trail. This whole thing is unnerving. He keeps jumping out and scaring him? Ugh.
Oh god. Did he kill his wife? I dont believe any of this. I believe that he broke into his own house. He fucked his wife.. with peachfuzz? Oh god. What the hell. HE STOLE HIS KEYS. Oh my god this is so weird. “Did I freak you out with my rape story?” YES YOU DID?!!?? DONT STAY THERE AARON GET OUT WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU LEAVE
Ok. So, Angela’s not his wife. And now he’s disappeared from the living room. Oh man, this is so brilliantly filmed. I’m so on edge.. DEATH. Oh man. Josef. This is so weird. Who is he?? Why is he so keen on being -- and he’s running again. This is so scary?? I don’t even know what I’m feeling right now besides tense.
Ok, so I’ve been literally scared into watching this thing without really saying much. This guy is the weirdest. Aaron got out, which is good. But Josef is clearly following him around and NOW HE KNOWS WHERE HE LIVES OH MAN
So, this guy has shown up at his house. He sent him a wolf and a locket inthe wolf.. And heS BEEN IN HIS HOUSE HE TOOK A LOCK OF HIS HAIR GODDAMNIT
The truth is.. I am.. I don’t know whats wrong with me..
