yossarian and the chaplain have the opposite problem that so many homoerotically-charged duos in classic lit seem to have. a lot of great classic books and plays have a bizarre, palpable undercurrent of barely-repressed homosexuality (for both gay and lesbian pairs) but then the text doesn't say anything outright, so you kinda have to accept that a good chunk of the readers never picked up on the subtext and will look at you like you're a maniac when you say that so-and-so was pining for whats-their-face all along. meanwhile, catch-22 literally opens on telling you bluntly that yossarian wants to fuck the chaplain, and then it spends probably 95% of the runtime staunchly refusing to elaborate

Anyway now that America is over we can definitely say Catch-22 was the Great American Novel and it isn't even close. Banger quotes in literally every paragraph. Ugh. Delicious.

really obsessed with the chapter in catch 22 that's dedicated entirely to making a guy named major major major major look as pathetic and miserable and mediocre as possible, as if the name didn't already do that for him. he was born in a wet cardboard box all alone

I feel there is something of a similar vibe between Holden Caulfield and John Yossarian.
