Redraw of an old piece.
What if Kakashi-sensei, as Hokage, had a hidden side where he showed his anger in private? I'd love to see him drop that calm demeanor and let his frustration out.

A First Time For Everything ✧ Chapter 6

Chapter 6: Souvenir
Part 3 of the For Your Own Good Series Chapter 6/? ✧ Work Masterlist

relationship: Kakashi Hatake x fem!Reader
content: early relationship fluff, developing relationship, first kiss. self-ship coded; please see author's note on series page for defined characteristics of reader.
word count: 3.1k
chapter summary: kakashi follows his instincts.
Read on AO3

It was just like it had been on your first date; sitting on the park bench, comfortable with one another, the only two people in the world.
But this time was even better.
This time, Kakashi had your head on his shoulder. Your waist beneath his fingers. Your legs all but tangled with his.
How did I get so lucky?
He could feel your pulse; still slightly fast, but in a good way. It wasn’t just the lingering effects of running around with his hounds. Even in your relaxed state, your heart beat with a little extra vigor, matching the rhythm his own heart was drumming inside his chest.
You were happy. And so was he.
Could it have always been this easy?
As quickly as the thought popped into his head, he dismissed it. Sure, whatever this was between you was still new. But he suspected—no, more than that; he knew—he wouldn’t feel this way with someone else. Even if he had given it a shot back in his ANBU days, it would have ended before it even began. He was too guarded then, and so was everyone else. His own walls were still present, but he couldn’t imagine anyone other than you being able to take them down slowly and carefully; the way you did now, without even trying.
No; a few years ago, the idea of showing vulnerability to someone was the last thing Kakashi Hatake would have entertained. He thought no good could come from it. Either it would be used against him, or it would lead to another person getting hurt because of him. Possibly both.
But he couldn’t see this feeling as a weakness. The trust he felt was different from what he would show to a fellow shinobi. This was a strength; one he had been missing nearly all his life.
How good would it feel to fully let you in?
It astonished him—how comfortable he was. How much more he wanted, and so quickly. How hard and fast he’d fallen, like his heart had always known where it belonged, and it had just been waiting to be safe in your hands.
The early evening breeze toyed with the wild phlox, pinks and blues swaying all around you. You reached a hand out to fiddle with the tiny blossoms bordering the blanket, the soft gesture making his heart melt even more. Kakashi had never taken the time to appreciate this place when he was younger, but thankfully, the blooms seemed not to hold a grudge.
“This really is a beautiful spot,” you said quietly. “Thanks for bringing me here.”
You punctuated your words with another soft kiss to his cheek; the motion already so natural between you that Kakashi couldn’t help but blush. “We can come back anytime you want.”
Golden streaks of sunlight signaled that sunset was fast approaching. Kakashi didn’t want to move, but he wouldn’t make you traipse back to the heart of the village in the dark, either.
Although… he couldn’t help but consider how romantic it would be at dusk, with fireflies twinkling among the grasses. Or at night; the stars would be so clear out here. Maybe he could bring you back a little later in the summer when the temperature wouldn’t drop so low overnight. Spending the evening lying side by side, stargazing, sharing a kiss or two that only the moon could see…
Kakashi chuckled to himself as he softly shook his head clear. He was getting ahead of himself, but it sure was nice to think about. And the fact that he could really see it…
If it was something you’d want to do with him, he would do everything to make it happen.
You hummed and nuzzled a little closer against his collarbone. The feeling came over him again like a wave; how easy it would be for him to lean down and kiss you. He remembered how you told him you would be patient, but that you did want him to kiss you, and you’d be ready whenever he was.
His skin felt charged with want. Every little place that your body was in contact with him was like a beacon.
Was this what ready felt like?
Before he could decide, you stretched away from him and reached for your bag. “Oh, before we go, could we take a picture?”
“Of what?”
“Of us, you goofball,” you smiled. You rummaged around for your camera, holding it up to show him. “It has a timer feature, so we can prop it against something and take a photo of us together.”
You turned back to look at him, your eyes darting over his face before scrunching in embarrassment. The look only lasted a second before you laughed it off. “Unless you don’t want to—it’s a silly idea…”
Kakashi took the camera from you and turned it over in his hand. It was small; the type to eject a photo one at a time as they were taken. “Hmmmm. Honestly, what I think would be a better idea, would be to take two photos. That way, we can each keep one.”
Your features softened. “Yeah?”
He smiled as he nodded. “I’d like to have one. I could keep it by the photo of Squad Seven.”
Sitting back, Kakashi watched you position the camera to ensure you’d both be in frame. Then you ran your fingers through your hair a few times, working the flyaways back into place. “I don’t look too messy from running around with your hounds, do I?”
“Not at all,” he answered. “You still look beautiful.”
The pink tint of your cheeks would still be visible in the photos, despite the time you’d taken to position the camera and return to sit between his legs again. It was like your back just fit perfectly against his chest; like you belonged caged between his legs, which he bent at the knee to fully surround you. He kept one arm braced behind him for stability, but he used the other to hold you around the waist in a way that could have felt like just a pose for the photo, but really was just what felt right. You wrapped your left arm around his leg, encircling his thigh and shin and pulling him close. Your right followed his own arm, your hand blanketing his and encouraging his gesture.
“Okay,” you announced. “Smile!”
But it was entirely unnecessary. He couldn’t have done anything but smile if he’d tried.
Again, Kakashi walked you home that evening. Both his and your footsteps landed with more of a delay the closer you got to your home, until you arrived safely at your door. As excited as you were to display the photo you’d taken, you would rather just stay with the real thing. But you’d spent nearly the whole day with him, and you knew he had other commitments he needed to devote his time to.
Still, that didn’t mean you couldn’t stall for a few extra seconds of loaded eye contact.
You smiled and blinked your eyes, feeling somewhat silly but you just weren’t ready to say goodbye. And Kakashi was no better; gazing back and putting on his own show of stalling.
“Thanks again for showing me that picnic spot. I had a great time.”
You put your hand on his shoulder to steady yourself as you leaned in and kissed his cheek. It had already become a habit at this point, and maybe something you looked forward to a little more than you wanted to admit. More than a small sense of pride washed over you at the simple action. But it was justified. After all, the Copy-nin didn’t just let anyone into his personal space like this.
Still, it was a privilege you didn’t want to overstep.
You pulled back, ready to say goodnight to him like always, when you felt his right hand gently cupping your jaw. He had a look in his eye that you couldn’t place. And before you really even had a chance to question it, he leaned forward, closed his eye, and—mask still up—kissed you. Kissed you. On the mouth.
You weren’t sure what to do—well, more accurately, you weren’t sure what he wanted you to do. Your instincts were begging you to pull him closer, kiss him harder, take as much of him as he was suddenly—apparently—willing to give. But that might scare him off, and you didn’t want to take the chance. So, you settled for slowly responding, trying to meet him in the place where he was comfortable.
It was a little strange, pressing your mouth to the layer of fabric that hid his face from you. But just behind that fabric, you felt his warm, perfect lips. Knowing he was right there caused your heart to race.
With your eyes closed, you could focus on the feeling, creating a picture in your mind. You pictured his mouth, lips pursed to meet your own. You imagined the angle of his jaw, the curve of his chin, the plains of his cheeks. How close the bottom of his scar might be to reaching his mouth.
Spending so long being this close, you could smell the very faint woodsy, pine scent that was clinging to either his clothes or his body. It made you wonder what he would taste like. What he would really taste like, if there weren’t a barrier between the two of you. If your tongue could be so impossibly bold as to come into contact with his.
He flattened his hand on the center of your back, holding you in place against him. You wondered whether this was unusual for him too. It didn’t feel like it was the first time he’d kissed anyone, but you’d never heard of anyone actually having kissed Kakashi Hatake before. Not that people hadn’t tried. There was never a shortage of women looking to discuss how attractive yet cold he was; to speculate on his experience in bed and how selfish of a lover they suspected he would be.
So far, you could say with absolute certainty that they had all been wrong.
You had never overheard anyone guess that Kakashi would be so gentle—unhurried, but almost pleading in the way he kissed. He held you securely yet softly, as though he wanted to be sure nothing could interfere, and the only way the kiss would end would be if you pulled away. But if he left it up to you, the two of you might starve here at your door.
It felt like a dream, one you would willingly, gratefully, never wake up from.
Kakashi, meanwhile, had never felt more alive. He was alert, focused, full of purpose. Kissing you was making long-dormant parts of his mind reawaken. Forgotten muscles unfurled and stretched, discarded dreams and desires suddenly flooded back into his chest.
He just hadn’t been able to resist when he felt you pulling back. Each time you kissed his cheek had been better than the last, but it had only made him want more. The kisses were too quick, too one-sided. The urge for more overrode his brain, but before he knew it, you were already pulling back from his cheek. And the idea that it was over just… wasn’t acceptable. So he had done the only thing he could think of.
And now, he was feeling the warmth of your mouth against his. Well, essentially against his. It was as close as he could get to you in the whirlwind of his own impulsive decision to actually get you that close. He hadn’t thought it through—not consciously anyway—but that didn’t matter anymore. What mattered was that it was better than he had let himself hope. Better than he dared to expect in the split second between deciding to close the distance between you and actually doing it.
Why the hell did I wait so long??
Ready as he felt to charge forward, he forced himself to be cautious. It would be a serious blow to his self-esteem if he finally kissed you, only to do something wrong. He needed to let you take the lead. But you were hesitant as well; he suspected from a desire not to push him beyond his comfort level on this. After all, he had held off these past couple weeks, wanting to kiss you but giving you signals like it wasn’t possible. But when it came down to it, he was more than comfortable. So many endorphins were flooding his brain. For as worried as he had been, he couldn’t have imagined that this would feel so… right. And as a consequence, it almost felt like an act of cruelty when you did pull away.
He reluctantly allowed the connection to break, leaning back and looking at your face. Your cheeks were bright pink and warm, and when you opened your eyes, the expression in them was something he had never seen before.
You parted your lips to speak, and he was so distracted by the knowledge that he had just kissed those lips that he almost didn’t hear you.
“Was that okay?”
A nervous laugh escaped him. “I should be asking you that,” he insisted, focusing his eye on yours to make sure you knew he took your answer seriously. “Was that okay?”
Instantly, you smiled. “Yeah. You?”
Kakashi felt his entire face light up, cheeks stinging the same way they had after your first date. “Yeah,” he echoed you, unable to think of any way that accurately described how very okay it was.
Your smile only grew in response. “Do you want to do it again?”
“Yes.”
Neither you nor Kakashi could have said for sure who kissed who that second time. Your hand, which hadn’t yet moved from its privileged position on his shoulder, shifted a little to hold the base of his neck. He, in turn, let his hand burrow a little into your hair, his fingers exploring the roots at your scalp. Your free hand reached forward to rest on his arm, the contact made as you each leaned closer to the other. And suddenly, you were again attached at the mouth.
The relief Kakashi felt was euphoric. This was exactly where you were supposed to be. And with one hand in your hair and the other splayed over your back, he could hold you there as long as he wanted. And you were holding him just as close, the smile on your face tangible against his own.
He pulled back just enough for the connection to break, simply so that he could press his lips to yours again. The sweetest sigh rushed from your lungs, and your face went so warm that Kakashi could feel the heat on the tip of his nose. He quickly lost himself, just kissing you over and over until you giggled and broke the spell.
His eye blinked rapidly as he forced himself to reenter reality. Kakashi felt his arm twitch with the urge to push his headband up. He wanted to look at you with his Sharingan, so he could call up the image of your beautifully blushed freshly-kissed face any time he wanted.
All at once, it hit him.
“Y/N…”
He wasn’t sure how to approach it. Asking now felt more than a little silly—considering he’d just kissed you about a dozen times over—but after making a tongue-tied mess of himself in front of Pakkun, he didn’t want to stumble over the issue again. He wanted to confirm it. Proudly.
So what if the timing was odd? He’d never claimed to be doing any of this in the most logical way. And as he was quickly learning, logic stood little chance against the way you made him feel.
“I was wondering earlier… are you—I mean, would you say you’re… my girlfriend?”
You paused, and he instantly wanted to take the words back. It was too fast; you would think he was possessive and clingy and weird. He hated how clueless he was.
But then you smiled, and like always, it shattered every reservation and worry he had. “Do you want me to be?”
He could feel himself nodding before you even finished the question. “I do.”
“Then, I think you’re supposed to ask,” you challenged as your smile stretched into a giddy grin.
Between the look and your face and the fact that you’d let him spend the last three to five minutes kissing you, the answer was obvious. But still, his heart pounded as he spoke the words. “Y/N, would you be my girlfriend?”
The prettiest blush rose in your cheeks, and Kakashi had his answer. “Yes please,” you beamed, more and more joy shining on your face even as you tried to control it. “To be honest, I sort of already felt like I was.”
“So did I,” he chuckled. “But I’m happy to have it officially stated.”
Your mouth curved into a sultry grin. “I’m your girlfriend,” you confirmed, stepping closer and fiddling with a runaway tuft of his hair. “And that makes you my boyfriend.”
Kakashi had been collecting monikers all his life: The Sharingan Hero, Copy Ninja, Cold-Blooded Kakashi, Kakashi of a Thousand Jutsu, Friend Killer.
Good or bad, he had never cared for any of them. But this was a title he hoped would define him for a long time. “Yes, it does.”
In a fit of boldness, Kakashi pulled you back for one more peck. His eye was half-lidded as he pulled back to admire you. “Goodnight, Y/N.”
The red tint on your face deepened, and he knew he had done the right thing. He was proud enough of himself that he felt the look on his face tip toward arrogant. I can do that to her, just by kissing her?
“When can I take you out again?”
Your mouth took on a sharp smirk, threatening to rival his own cockiness. “We can go again right now if you want.”
And that was the moment Kakashi considered that he might—just might—be falling in love with you.
But… surely it’s too early for that, right?
The idea was heavy on his mind as you gently smiled back at him. The look on your face could only be described as longing. For a second, he thought you might even lean in and let him kiss you again. But instead, you gave him a teasing grin that proved he had met his match.
And he loved it.
He was still rooted to the spot as you turned and opened your door. You paused for the moment he needed to get his ass in gear, smiling enticingly and offering a wave as you began to disappear inside your apartment.
“See you soon, Y/N.”

chapter summary: everyone gets caught up on the new couple's personal lives.
Read on AO3

He should have known it couldn’t last.
Normally, Kakashi would have been just pessimistic enough to predict the coming obstacle. But on this particular morning, he was too hopelessly smitten and drunk on optimism to even consider anything getting in his way.
And then it did, and it was more of a shock than he would like to admit.
He woke to the unmistakable sound of one of the Hokage’s birds tapping on his window with a missive. A C-rank mission for Squad Seven, to begin in one hour; delivering a sealed scroll across the Land of Fire’s border.
The assignment sobered his giddy mood, his lack of sleep these past few days hitting him like a slap to the face. He now had exactly 58 minutes to prepare himself on the details of the mission, arm himself accordingly, and round up his squad.
His nosy, intrusive, meddlesome squad.
Kakashi ran a hand through his tangled bedhead, allowing himself half a minute to calm his overactive brain and make a plan. His knack for strategy came in handy outside of battle just as often as inside one.
He would retrieve Sakura first and remind her that focusing on the mission meant not bombarding him with questions. She wouldn’t like it, but she would listen. And as far as he knew, Sasuke and Naruto didn’t even know he’d taken you on the date yet. So as long as he could keep the topic from surfacing, the boys would be much more concerned with finally being assigned a mission with higher stakes than leaving behind an unharvested vegetable.
Yeah, that should work.
Kakashi read on, his heart sinking when he realized the delivery would take them to the Land of Grass. Even at his quickest, it would take him alone no less than two days just to get there. The delivery itself would be simple, but that timeframe…
He refused to follow that perfect date with a possible week of silence. He couldn’t disappear on you.
A quick glance at the clock confirmed that he now had only 52 minutes. No time to overthink this. He hastily scrawled a note to you, explaining the situation and his intent to pick up where the two of you left off when he returned. He winced a little as he wrote, cursing his awkward writing, but he figured it was better than nothing. As long as he wasn’t accidentally offending you somewhere in the message, it was probably as good as he could get.
He rapidly stuffed his weapons pouch full of kunai and shuriken, then shrugged on his flak jacket on his way out the door. He sprinted along the rooftops to your apartment, figuring he’d better take care of this before rousing his team. There was no way he could avoid their questions if they saw him leave a message for you.
By the time he arrived at your door, the sky had barely begun to lighten. He wasn’t sure if you were awake yet or not, but he chose not to take the chance of disturbing you. Instead, he tucked the note in your door and lingered for just a minute before running off to what would probably feel like the longest mission of his life.
Y/N, Squad Seven will be away for the next week on a mission so I won’t be able to see you as soon as I had intended. But when we return, I hope you will still let me take you on another date. Kakashi
Your cheeks stung as you smiled, reading the words over and over. Sure, it was disappointing that Kakashi would be away for a while. But such was the life of a shinobi; especially one as talented as him. You already missed him, but the fact that he had thought of you before leaving—writing down this little promise that his offer of another date would still be on the table once he got back—made warmth flood your chest.
You kept the note securely in your pocket as you made your way to Ichiraku, feeling invincible. No matter what the day threw at you, you had another date to look forward to.
“Well there she is!”
Ayame’s announcement was showy and saccharine enough to intrigue the whole village. You tied on your apron and flashed her a look; something between You-can’t-seriously-expect-me-to-talk-about-it-right-now and I-might-die-if-I-don’t-talk-about-it-right-now!
“Good morning,” you responded, testing the quality of your voice. Did you sound too daydreamy? Too distracted? Whispering with Ayame was one thing, but you didn’t want to risk a line of questioning from your father. Speaking of… “Wait, where’s dad?”
She waved her hand. “He had to go on an emergency produce run. Something about bad mushrooms.”
“Seriously? I just got those enoki yesterday. There’s no way they should be—”
“No offense Y/N but who cares about mushrooms right now?” she frantically cut you off. “I want to hear about your date!!”
A fresh flame of heat singed your cheeks. “It was incredible,” you swooned. “He’s so sweet. He brought me flowers and we went to dinner at that new place down the street and then we just walked around for a while and talked… and he’s so funny! Subtly though, like sharp and witty—”
“Okay and how about his face!?!!”
“His face?” you absently repeated. “What about it?”
“Hellooooo what does it look like?!”
You blinked at her. “I didn’t see it.”
“What?!” she barked. “I’m confused. How do you go out to eat with a guy and not see his face!?”
“I—” Somewhere between the explanation existing as a mere thought in your mind and speaking it out loud, you realized how ridiculous it was about to sound. “I closed my eyes.”
Ayame looked dumbstruck. She stayed silent for a full minute as her brain whirred in overdrive, trying desperately to make sense of what you’d just said.
Unfortunately, a minute wasn’t long enough.
“You closed your eyes??” she hissed. “You sat across from him, at a table, at a restaurant, on! a! date! and you closed your eyes?!”
“Well of course it’s gonna sound dumb when you say it like that!” you argued. “But my eyes weren’t closed the whole time; just when he had his mask down.”
Ayame’s eyebrow twitched in frustration, similar to a look you’d seen Iruka give to an obnoxious Naruto time and time again. “How is that even a solution though?” she asked. “Couldn’t everyone else still see him?”
“...I held my hand up. To block their view.”
She narrowed her eyes in disbelief. “You sat there with your eyes closed and your hand up while he ate.”
“It’s not like he told me to or anything! You just don’t get it,” you immaturely huffed. “We were talking the whole time and… I don’t know, it didn’t feel weird.” You understood her reaction, but it really was that simple. Being there with Kakashi just felt easy, even if the details seemed strange on paper. “Honestly, he made me feel really comfortable.”
Ayame crossed her arms, her eyes still suspiciously narrowed. “You really didn’t even peek?”
“Are you seriously asking me that?”
“Well he took you on a whole date and you technically still don’t even know what he looks like!” she countered. “Don’t you want to know?”
“Of course I do,” you agreed, “but he isn’t ready, and that’s that.”
“So boring,” she scoffed.
“It was not boring at all,” you defended, helpless against the smile that formed on your face every time you thought about the date.
“And if you didn’t see his face I guess there’s no point in asking if you kissed.”
You bit the inside of your cheek to keep from beaming. Ayame wouldn’t be impressed with the peck on his cheek, but it was already a memory you held close to your heart. “You seriously don’t get it,” you repeated. “It was only our first date. I can’t wait to see him again.”
“Except you don’t actually get to see him—”
“Shut up,” you laughed. “He’s on a mission for the next week anyways, so I’m your problem until he comes back.”
Soon enough, you reminded yourself. Soon, he would be back.
“Naruto! Knock it off!”
Kakashi was starting to wonder if he’d been speaking in a foreign language the last few days. The squad was finally on their return trip—finally less than a day’s journey to the village. To home. And the mission itself had gone well; not a single outside disturbance to set them back, despite what a C-rank could potentially entail.
Personally, Kakashi failed to see how this was a bad thing. Yet every day that went by without a larger threat, Naruto grew more agitated. And more annoying.
The blonde genin fell into the same habit as he had on every other mission since the business in the Land of Waves; charging forward to do everything in his power to one-up Sasuke and show off. But on a simple delivery mission, opportunities for showmanship were few and far between.
Heading back without having a chance to be the hero of the mission, Naruto somehow managed to convince himself that an ambush was coming any minute—a swarm of enemies hidden in the trees, waiting to pounce. Kakashi had already humored the boy by scanning for chakra signatures, but Naruto still insisted on running literal circles around the rest of the squad, trying to be a one-man defense team.
Now, the running-in-circles would be one thing, if Naruto were actually being vigilant or, at the very least, keeping up with the rest of the team. But he wasn’t. Every few minutes, the orange walking headache was finding a “suspiciously broken branch” or hearing a “threatening crunch,” forcing everyone else to slow down.
And honestly, Kakashi was sick of it.
“Naruto!” he bellowed again. “Keep up!”
“But Sensei!” Naruto wailed. “I really think there are spies following us!”
“We already delivered the scroll,” Sakura pointed out. “Why would anyone bother following us now?”
“Because! Maybe we were the targets all along, not the scroll!” he gasped. “Wait, what if this whole mission was just a trap. Believe it! There was probably nothing in that scroll at all; they just wanted us to let our guards down!”
Sasuke scoffed. “That’s so stupid.”
“Nuh-uh!”
“Naruto, please,” Kakashi groaned. “I appreciate your dedication, but could you just focus it a bit more on actually reaching home?”
“But Sensei—!”
“Come on Naruto, aren’t you excited to get back to the village? How about this; why don’t we get some ramen after we turn in our report.”
“Really?! Wait, your treat right?! I mean it was your idea and all…”
“Sure, Naruto. I’ll treat you to one bowl of ramen.” He would have agreed to almost anything, but thankfully, Naruto could reliably be bought with the same bribe every time. And the fact that that bribe was relatively cheap and just so happened to be served by the girl of his dreams? Proverbial icing on the proverbial cake. “In fact, Ichiraku can be our first stop. The Hokage can wait a little longer for our report.”
“Wow thanks Sensei!” Naruto started snickering and sidled up next to Sakura. “Ha, you hear that, Sakura?! What a sucker. I played Kakashi-sensei like a fiddle, believe it.”
Kakashi rolled his eyes, pretending he couldn’t hear the whispering. If letting Naruto think he outwit him gave the genin enough pride to finally wrap up this trip, he was all for it.
“Naruto, you’re even dumber than you look,” Sakura huffed. “As usual, you have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“Huh?”
“Do you honestly think he suggested Ichiraku just for you?”
“Why else would he want to go there?!”
“To see Y/N, obviously.”
“Oh yeah!” Naruto let out a few mischievous giggles. “It’s funny watching him try to ask her out,” he snickered. “What do you think his excuse will be this time?”
“Hmph. Shows how much you know,” she sneered.
“What’s that supposed to mean?!?”
“It means he already went on a date with Y/N.”
“WHAT?!?” Naruto screeched to a halt, forcing the team to stop yet again. “Hey, SENSEI!”
For a few brief seconds, Kakashi just kept going; imagining he could leave the troublesome genin and all their invasive chatter behind. It might be a fitting punishment for not following my orders, he thought. If they’re capable of a C-rank, surely they can find their way home on their own.
He was so tired of explaining his every move. If it wasn’t a group of nosy kids, it was his ill-behaved ninken, or his humiliating best friend. He could barely say two words to you before someone wanted a play-by-play and to give their unrequested advice on what he should do next. Hasn’t anyone ever heard of privacy, or minding their own business?
But still he found himself turning back to face this next great waste of time.
“Don’t feel bad that you didn’t know,” Sakura continued. “Sensei needed help with stuff like what to wear and what to talk to her about, so of course he came to me.”
“Kakashi-sensei is that true??!?” Naruto squawked.
“Our memories vary on the finer details,” Kakashi mumbled, “but that’s close enough.”
“Hold on—so you’re telling me you went on a date with Y/N?!”
Sasuke groaned. “Isn’t that what you and Sakura have been trying to get him to do this whole time??”
“Well yeah but he’s been so weird I didn’t think he was actually gonna do it!”
Sasuke and Sakura had matching expressions: dumbfounded and appalled. “What?!?”
All Kakashi could do was sigh. Of course, it would be his luck that the fragile hold he had over the squad would fully crumble in the last few hours. He just had to fall for the girl his hyperactive student felt strongly attached to.
…Not that he could blame him.
“Why didn’t anyone tell me??” Naruto howled, turning toward his sensei with his face scrunched into an unreadable mess. Kakashi braced for another weirdly protective rant before the genin suddenly beamed.
“THIS IS AWESOME!”
Kakashi let out an exhale, only to remember this meant the usual barrage of questions was sure to follow.
“He said he won’t talk about it until the mission is complete,” Sakura explained.
“Well it’s done now!” Naruto shouted. “Tell us what happened!”
“What about the ambush you were so sure of five minutes ago?” Kakashi deadpanned.
“Nah, I totally scared them off already, believe it.”
Sasuke scoffed. “A kitten wouldn’t even be afraid of you.”
Kakashi began walking forward. “Can we at least keep moving while we do this?”
“So how did it go?!?” Sakura burst, walking twice as fast to catch up to him. “She wasn’t too upset that you were late, right?”
“You were late?!” Naruto shrieked. “Come on Kakashi-sensei!!”
“It was a mistake,” he answered tightly, “and yes, she forgave me.”
“Awwwwww! I swear she’s just perfect for you, Sensei,” Sakura gushed. “I think most girls would have given up on you by now.”
“Very helpful, Sakura. Thank you.” Kakashi felt his shoulders drooping with every step. Would being harried by his students for the next few hours be the thing that finally broke his sanity?
“So did she have fun? Is she gonna go out with you again?”
“We have plans, assuming we ever make it back to the village…”
“Where are you gonna take her next!?”
“I haven’t decided,” Kakashi admitted.
The dinner really was nice; you were more accommodating about things than he could have hoped. But he still couldn’t shake the feeling that he could have done better. He couldn’t completely let his guard down in a crowded restaurant, but he wasn’t sure where else he could take you that would qualify as a date. Honestly, he felt most comfortable just sitting beside you in the park. Talking to each other about nothing and anything, losing track of time, being together without expectations and curious stares from onlookers…
So what if we do more of that?
It didn’t sound like much, but you’d already made it clear that his intention was what was important to you. A date didn’t need to be formal or showy. Surely there was another way he could make it a bit more special.
“Something different this time,” he concluded. “Though I should still make sure it’s nice, considering this mission set us back a week—”
“Wait, Sensei!” Naruto shouted. “You mean you’re supposed to be with Y/N right now?!”
“Well maybe not right this second,” Kakashi answered, “but we did plan to see each other again before we got this assignment—”
“Then what are we waiting for!?”
“You, mostly.”
“Come on!” The Uzumaki boy grabbed Kakashi’s hand, pulling his sensei along as he broke into a sprint. “Even I know you’re not supposed to keep a girl waiting!”
For the time he was gone, not an hour went by where you didn’t think about Kakashi. While part of this was simply because you missed him and worried for his (and all of Squad Seven’s) safety while on their mission, another large part was due to everyone else’s curiosity.
Word had spread of your outing with the Copy-nin, and suddenly everyone who visited Ichiraku was pointing you out, whispering how you’d caught the eye of the aloof shinobi. A few people even went as far as to ask you about his face, and they were just as disappointed as Ayame had been to learn you had no answer to give them.
Even Iruka stopped by for dinner one night, happily giving you a hard time between bites of his ramen. “And you told me the two of you were just friends,” the chūnin teased, accompanied by Ayame singing her new and already worn-out catchphrase: “I told her so, I told her so, I told her so!”
All the attention grew old fast, and you found yourself hiding in the stock area for a few moments of peace.
But even thinking about Kakashi basically nonstop didn’t prepare you for how you reacted when you spotted him in the flesh, sauntering up to the back entrance of the shop with one hand lifted in a wave.
“Hello,” he grinned.
Your heartbeat went haywire at the sight of him; a particular spot in your chest pulled toward him like there was something connecting you together. You nearly reached out for him but held yourself back.
“Hello yourself,” you smiled. “Welcome home.”
He propped his forearm against the back wall of the shop and casually leaned closer, one half-lidded eye focused only on you. “Glad to be back.”
You felt yourself blush under his gaze. “I should warn you; Ayame’s had nothing but questions about our date all week. She might interrogate you when she sees you.”
He shrugged. “I gave Naruto some money and set him loose out front, so your sister should be occupied for a few minutes at least.”
“That’s genius,” you laughed. “So the mission went well?”
“It was pretty routine. Not enough excitement for Naruto, though.”
You hummed knowingly, letting your eyes travel across his shoulders and chest. “Nothing ever is.”
“So,” he cleared his throat, shifting his stance just a little straighter. “If it’s not too short notice, I was wondering if you’d like to go on another date with me this afternoon.”
You smiled back up at his face. “My dad will be here in about two hours to take over. I’ll just need to run home to change and clean myself up a bit.”
“Perfect,” he grinned. “I still have to turn in our mission report and then get a few things ready, so take your time. I’ll meet you at your place?”
“This date requires prep work?” you teased.
“I was thinking we could go on a picnic,” he explained, standing up straight to massage the side of his neck. “I know a place… if you’d be interested in something like that.”
Ayame shouted your name, and you knew your free time was nearly up. “I’d love to.”
“Great,” he smiled. “I’ll get everything ready and see you in a few hours.”
“I can’t wait.”
Your heart fluttered in your chest. A secluded picnic with the Copy-nin… You couldn’t think of anything cuter.
