Strange coincidence: I watched "Gilbert Grape" only yesterday. Very intense, contained and impressive portrayal, but do you think Johnny and Hallström were really on the same wavelength? Glad that Johnny stuck to his guns...
Oh that’s awesome, I’m glad you liked it! Funny you say that, because according to Lasse, they actually weren’t on the same wavelength. This is what he said just a couple years ago:
“I think Johnny was frustrated by the fact that we hadn’t figured out how to end the film. We had a big fight in the middle of the shoot over how the script was all free-flowing and floating and we kept shooting on an outline. I was walking past Johnny’s trailer one day, and a mobile phone came flying out the window. It wasn’t always rosy and happy times.”
“There was this huge creative tension between them,” says Harrington. “Johnny had a very specific idea, which is his genius, to play these Edward Scissorhands-like characters that had this quirky aspect. Lasse wanted him to play it straight; he said, ‘No, no, I want this to be real.’ And both of them are very caring people, so it was interesting that they’re having that struggle, because [fighting] didn’t fit either personality.”
Btw, Johnny himself has admitted that he was a moody, drunk little shit on the set of that film, and that one of the main reasons he did Chocolat was to work with Lasse again and basically apologize for Gilbert Grape lol but yeah, they definitely had creative differences still.
EW wrote a ‘20 years later’ article that you might find interesting after just watching it, here’s the link :)

The way it turned out was perfect, and I tend to think of it as a sort of meshing of both Johnny and Lasse’s ideas about the character. But Gilbert Grape was probably one of the most personal and darkest role he’s played so it’s no surprise to me that he was very insistent on ‘playing it real.’
