Kaya had a rough time growing up. From her sister going missing, to the loss of her mother.. it seemed like the universe had it out for this little girl.

Her family moved to Japan when she was 5 years old for business opportunities, her older sister Ria went missing shortly after, and her mother passed when she was 7. Not only did she lose two important people in her life, but one of them died to save her.

Her mother died when the family home caught on fire. The doorway was blocked by burning debris, so her mother shoved her outside, since Kaya was small enough to fit through the gap underneath the debris. Her mother was not so lucky.

Kaya didn't know that her mother died, since her father Elliot quickly picked her up and took her to a hospital.. where everything got even worse.

Kaya was seen by Celia Marlowe, a doctor at the local hospital. Elliot left Kaya in her care and left after dropping her off. He was in shambles, and didn't want his daughter to see him in that state.

Celia took care of Kaya's burns, and later on talked with Kaya's father while his daughter was resting in a hospital room. Empathizing with him, she told him to take some time to heal from the incident, and she would take care of Kaya while he did so. It was hard losing a spouse in an accident, after all.

Elliot quickly agreed, moved by the doctor's kindness. He fully left Kaya in her care, taking Celia's advice and taking some time for himself. His other daughter was old enough to take care of herself anyhow.

What he didn't realize was that he would never see his youngest daughter again. He lost most of his family, only a couple years apart.

Kaya was transferred to another "hospital", which was actually a lab in the middle of the woods, hidden from pretty much everyone. She was there for years, getting experimented on and used to spread despair.

She had to fight another experiment in a 'naming ceremony', where experiments are put to the test for their new name. If they pass, they get a positive name. If they fail, they get a negative name.

Kaya failed. The name she was given from that day forward was Whelp. She had no chance, despite her opponent trying to give her one. She was just so scared and refused to fight, until her opponent cornered her, trying to end the test as painlessly and quickly as possible, while also trying to make it believable to Celia. She fought back, and her opponent lost control of herself.

Her opponent, Oddity, fed on her own despair and got more violent, actually hurting Kaya. After the naming ceremony, Kaya felt on edge whenever Oddity was around.

She eventually started feeling comfortable around her again after spending time with her, and after learning Oddity was not in control of her actions. She viewed Oddity as a big sister.

When Oddity escaped the lab, Kaya felt lonely. She befriended some of the other experiments, but she still felt.. sad. She missed her big sister horribly.

She befriended a girl named Ruin who had needles for hands, a man with lizard traits named Liraz, and a kid with crow traits named Zura. Kaya gave Zura a nickname! She calls them birb!

Kaya was really close with Zura, despite some of her things getting stolen by them sometimes. He couldn't help it though, he loved shiny things! She sometimes gifted them shiny things she found on missions! Mostly rocks.

History repeated itself. Kaya escaped the lab to go find Oddity, and left her friends all alone. She keeps in touch with them, but they have to be sneaky about it! One wrong text, and Celia could find her again.

She found Oddity, and found that she started going by Aditi instead! So she began calling her Big Sis Aditi!

She now lives with Aditi and her roommates, and is living a much better life than she had before. She can actually celebrate her birthday now! And Christmas! And other holidays!!

She still wears bandages despite her wounds being healed, however. She doesn't like to look at the scars. She also speaks in third person. She wasn't allowed to use her real name in the lab, and she doesn't want to ever be called Whelp again. She uses her name as much as she can so it won't be forgotten. She almost forgot her own name, and that terrified her.

Riley was the older brother of Damien Borders. On days he wasn't chasing a news story or writing away at his computer, he was spending time with his little brother. He had always wanted a brother, and his wish came true, albeit a few years later than expected.

He introduced Damien to photography when he was around 11 years old. Photography was a vital part of any article! He proudly watched as his little brother practiced photography every day, becoming more and more adept at his skill. When Damien was officially named the Ultimate Photographer, Riley couldn't have been more proud. Yes, he cried. Who wouldn't?

They got along great, and spent most of their time avoiding their narcissistic mother, Charlotte Borders.

Then The Tragedy arrived.

Riley wanted to help stop the Remnants of Despair before their city was absolutely destroyed. Anything to keep the two of them out of severe danger.

Sonia Nevermind had arrived in their city with her army, killing people left and right. Riley saw this and wanted to put an end to it. He found a way on board one of their main weaponized vehicles, and even succeeded in disabling it!

However when he turned around to leave the control area, his path was blocked by none other than Sonia herself. He had the misfortune of choosing the vehicle she was on as the one to disable first.

She called for two of her subjects to drag Riley out of the vehicle, bringing him to an area where anyone could see them easily. Another subject of hers approached, handing her a sword. He almost couldn't hear her rambling at him over his own heart racing in his chest.

When he least expected it, the sword was thrust through his stomach. He collapsed to the ground, and was stabbed once more to ensure his death.

He made eye contact with Damien who was watching from afar, and upon realizing that his brother was going to watch him die, he smiled. Even in his final moments, his brother came first. He wanted to apologize for doing something so stupid, but didn't have the words or the energy to do so.

Damien fled as far as he could from the scene, leaving Riley to die alone. He had to prioritize his safety, otherwise they both would have died that day.

Riley bled out from his injuries shortly after.

Damien grew up in a not-so-great environment with his older brother, Riley, who he was closest with in his family. His family made a decent wage, able to support their needs and then some.

He always had such long hair as a kid, that his mother always paid to have done professionally. One day, his dysphoria became too much for him and he cut his hair himself... and got caught. His mother was furious.

She posted a picture of him online to humiliate him, which he did not find out about until years later. Thankfully, his brother was there to take his side, and defended his actions. Riley took Damien out to eat, mostly just to get the two of them away from their mother, and to chat about things.

Damien came out to Riley first, knowing that he was someone he could come out to safely. Riley accepted his little brother as his brother, and promptly ruffled his hair to mess with him.

Riley took Damien to get his hair cut the way he wanted it to look, paying for it out of his pocket so that their mother couldn't get upset at Damien.

Things went well between them for the next few years.. then tragedy struck. The Biggest, Most Awful, Most Tragic Event in Human History... also called The Tragedy.

Damien had lost his brother during The Tragedy. The person he looked up to the most. Gone. Murdered in cold blood.

And all he could do was watch it all unfold in front of him.

He grew his hair long again to honor his late brother, who always had his hair in a long braid. It was the least he could do. He always felt like his brother's death was his fault, and the rest of his family blamed him too.

Tetsu grew up comfortably with her four siblings in a welcoming home. Their needs were met, with some extra money left over for other things, like restaurants or fun activities with the family.

At around 13 years old, she started to realize how she felt about her gender identity, and came out to her family a year later. They accepted her and helped her with her transition!

Tetsu is also autistic, with a special interest in geology. Which is the reason for her talent/career! Her favorite gemstone is malachite.
