The next time they tell you Americans are “happy” with their employer provided health insurance remember that that “happiness” is fueled by willful ignorance of what the alternatives are really like and fear of losing what little crappy health care they currently have.

Hairdresser: We’re going to have to use a color remover to take out the blue pigment, then apply more pigment to allow for the proteins in the hair to adhere to it. Then possibly mix three different types of toners to reach the goal of your natural hair color.
Hairdresser: pretty simple
Me: this is chemistry
Hairdresser: yeah, but people don’t like when we talk that way

The first training of Zuko we see, Iroh shoots a fireball right into Zuko’s face - while Zuko just stands there unflinching. It’s the very first episode, and Zuko & Iroh are the obvious villains, and it just seems like some macho bs they do. And then comes the duel with Zhao, and Zuko is down, but when he sees that flaming fist to his face, something lets loose inside him that helps him turn the fight around…But it’s not until we learn Zuko’s backstory that all this gets a whole new meaning.
Why would Zuko still be on basics if not because he suffered a huge setback after his agni kai? Imagine how much hard work, patience it was to build Zuko back up again, so he would not freeze in blind panic (or curl up in a ball) when fire gets close to his face. I think Iroh practiced this with him all the time until he could stand there unflinching (knowing that Iroh is in full control of his bending and trusting that his uncle would never hurt him). And when it came to the duel with Zhao, Zuko could react in a RL situation instead of freezing up, and turn all the negative feelings (rage, anger, pain, whatever) into fuel to win the fight against a bender who is much more skilled than he is.
And Iroh obviously drilled him with control and restraint, because no matter how much he lets his rage loose, he has enough control not to hurt Zhao and enough self-restraint not to burn him at the end. I definitely think it was a deliberate choice on Iroh’s part to hold back on teaching offensive forms to Zuko beyond the basics (knowing that combining those with his unprocessed anger could result in him being out of control and hurt people). Instead, it seems he concentrated on teaching him defensive forms, fire breath, heat control, and so on…

Kidnapper: we have your son
Zuko: I don’t have a son
Kidnapper: then who’s making us reevaluate our life choices and keeps telling us he’ll forgive us if we let him go
Zuko: oh my god you have Aang

I know “Do you really think friendships can last more than one lifetime?” is super overdone at this point, but I just really really appreciate how so many characters have inter-generational connections in this show.
There are dozens of examples like this, but if I included all of them, this post would’ve longer than it already is…

Entertainment Spotlight: Daren Kagasoff
Daren Kagasoff, who you may know as Ricky on Secret Life of the American Teenager, is working on a new project. The Village, a show about residents of a Brooklyn apartment building who become each others’ found family. Darren plays Gabe, a young law student trying to juggle law school and his elderly grandfather who has moved in with him. We asked him a few questions about fandom, The Village, and his perfect dog, Kidy.
Are you a super fan of anything?
I’m a super fan of the television series, Ray Donovan. I have been watching since the first season, and that is the only show I watch religiously. The entire cast is phenomenal.
Without any spoilers, what scene or episode of The Village are you most excited for fans to see?
I’m excited for people to see episode seven. You will see a new side of Gabe that even surprises me. He is no longer afraid to do the right thing, even if it is against what his father wants. You see a change in him that he never thought would have been possible.
What would you tell your dog, Kidy, if she understood you for one minute?
Well, the funny thing is that Kidy understands everything that comes out of my mouth. Even if I’m talking about math equations…she knows the answer.
How did you prepare for your role in The Village?
My preparation for The Village was pretty simple. I reached out to a few of my law school friends to get a grasp on how they felt balancing school with their personal lives. Each one of them was extremely overwhelmed. Their experiences helped me understand Gabe‘s mindset no matter what the scene required.
Thanks, Darren! Tumblr, do yourself a favor and check out NBC’s The Village on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET!
