Still Reading Carlyle
And I noticed he refers to money as an enchantment or drug putting our brave widdle Captains of Industry to sleep. I wonder if he got that from Spencer's 2nd Book of the Faerie Queene (a book I keep meaning to reread).
"Western" literature loves the theme of order vs chaos. Frye talks about how this plays out with desires and humors in Rennaissance poetry especially. We contrast rivers of regulation to the anarchy of the sea. Joyce in Ulysses gets what's been bugging me about the phrase "Mother Earth." If the Earth is more sea than land perhaps it would be better to say "Mother Sea." The frothy and chaotic (entropic) ocean out of which we crawled, and to which we will dissolve as all things do. No self-rejuvenating Mother Earth. Just the sea, and space.

Now Reading
Past and Present by Thomas Carlyle. Whenever I read a book I feel a drive to talk to someone about reading it--to let someone know I am reading it--and that always brings up the question "Would you recommend it?"

With Carlyle I find I can't say. I suppose if you're turned off by racism, anti-semitism, celebration of hierarchy, etc. then maybe Carlyle isn't the author for you. But what draws me to the act of reading him (aside from the fact that I reference him in my grad school application essay) is his influence as a reactionary thinker. Carlyle is the first, to my knowledge, to place capitalist society against an imagined idealized Middle Ages and say "See, this is what we must return to!" Of course, Carlyle perhaps has the advantage of actually having done some historical research, though a singular table-book by a singular monk perhaps does not warrant the kinds of large claims he makes. Still, you can see his influence today. There are alt-right bloggers who self-consciously mold their style off of his (and are all the worse for it). I'll likely post about him and his acolytes (and apostates) more as time goes on. I do think Carlyle's books, if read with discretion, offer one ample glimpses into the reactionary mind and streams of thought. His prose style is a kind of mimic-Habakkuk which nears stream-of-consciousness as he puts together everything he distastes: lazy aristocracy, historians, cash-value, Jewish merchants, etc. etc. babbles the stream...

"Funny you should say that, Mr. Frog, but those coffee grounds we found at the murder... Well, they were Wilkins Coffee. Now see, the thing that bothers me, is that the victim... Well, he didn't drink Wilkins."

space exploration and all science in general is only possible because of curiosity and the inherently human need to understand. without the love for discovery, we won't have anything at all. this is seen especially in space science. other fields of science are studied because they are necessary to life. space science is unique in that it barely affects us at all. so utility-wise there's no reason to study space. but we do it anyway. because science is the love for the unknown. science is the greatest culmination of curiosity. NASA has space rovers on mars. they name each rover based on the qualities that they think are the foundations of what humanity is. my favourite rover was named curiosity. she's so darling to me. to NASA, one of the most important human qualities is curiosity.
