Hey y'all, this is a very heavy post to write, but one of our beloved community members and iconic panel editor @theweeklynark has recently had their home devastated by Hurricane Helene. Phone reception is incredibly spotty for them at this time so communication is difficult, but they've put forward some donation links in their bio, both to support the relief efforts that are working hard to help the victims of this tragedy, as well as help their own family so they can get back on their feet.
(^^^ full list of donation links, just tap right!)
(^^^ their GoFundMe; they've requested that people prioritize donations to the relief efforts to help their community at large, but whatever people can spare afterwards should go here !!!)
I cannot even begin to imagine how horrifying this situation is for all the people who have had their homes and way of life destroyed by the current onslaught of hurricanes. All the photos that TWN has shared of what's become of their home in the wake of Helene are like something out of a nightmare and it breaks my heart to see a fellow community member living it with each passing day. I truly hope their situation improves as soon as possible and that they never have to live through such an astronomically devastating event like this ever again.
So please, if you're able, consider donating to any of the above organizations / collections, every little bit helps. If you can't donate, then please share this post, more visibility means it can reach more people who can. Thank you 💖

another thing that's been talked to death but it really is something that rachel smythe spoke about how she wanted to "deconstruct purity culture" with lore olympus and shit like that but also in lore olympus virginity is a real tangible thing that exists and gods like eros can detect its presence or absence.

you know, for a comic that claims to be a "feminist retelling," it is incredible how meaningless and vapid the actual "feminism" tends to be
just using the latest update, where ouranos is verbally trying to tear rhea down and metis just kind of ... does this? and let's be clear, i don't expect metis to break into some kind of longwinded speech, considering the moment, but it doesn't like ... do anything.
is there even any reason to say rhea and metis knew each other? beyond just being fertility goddesses, have they ever actually met? metis reaching for rhea would have a lot more power if we knew of their relationship prior; because we don't know if there was one (and there very likely wasn't, rhea mentions metis to zeus while she's dying in his arms and tells him to use metis like ouranos used her) the casual aspect of this interaction falls flat on its face.
it's great to have girl boss moments and "fuck yeah" scenes, and those can be great as a feminist aspect, but feminism and women solidarity is more than that. it's something rachel has tried to do numerous times but can never actually stick the landing on. the concept of all the fertility goddesses working together could be empowering, but thus far, we haven't seen them connecting - they're just posing in their met gala reject dresses, framed in such a way that we see their breasts over and over. wouldn't this moment have been better if metis and the other fertility goddesses had put their hands on rhea's shoulders, or shown that they were together beyond ouranos? there wouldn't even need to be text; showing the three of them surrounding her, showing her love that she couldn't find with kronos, showing her that she wasn't alone.
if rachel wanted to prove that rhea was too badass to be affected by ouranos, then metis reaching for her just serves as pointless space filler. there's no point to her repeating "no, no, no" because it defeats the whole purpose of rhea being strong. it makes it seem like rhea is as fragile and timid as ouranos is trying to claim. again, we don't even know if metis and rhea know each other, and we have to remember that in previous chapters, rhea is the one who told zeus to consume her, and that metis slept with zeus when he was very much underage. we don't exactly have positive links between the two, so having metis act as some kind of comfort just feels. obligatory. like, throw in some surface level girl comfort.
visuals can be so powerful, and just seeing all the fertility goddesses rallying together facing ouranos, rather than separately posing, could have been so phenomenal. isn't that the whole point of this narrative? isn't the whole point that love goes both ways, that strength comes from connection and love (not just romantic, but maternal, friendship, allyship?)
unrelated, i don't think it's a coincidence that both persephone and rhea have been bashed by their father-in-laws in The Big Showdown, or that the bashing follows the same line of taunting. both have been called useless and weak, and it just seems to drive the point home that rhea and persephone are more or less twins. this is the most persephone-looking rhea has ever appeared, which is gross for a lot of reasons, but i digress.
showing, not telling, goes a long way, and it would be nice if we could see the actions of women supporting each other, rather than being told it's happening.

"Real love"
(TW: Mentions of SA and cheating)
That's what he says....
Tumblr media
Yet it really doesn't feel like he loves her the way he says he does. Even after watching these two get married, it doesn't feel as authentic as it should.
Which is why I'm giving examples of his "love" for Persephone
Tumblr media
Starting off with the earlier examples, all Hades feels for Persephone is lust, just straight lust.
Yet two weeks after knowing her, he claims to be in love with her.
Tumblr media
Then there's the boundary overstepping
Tumblr media
Even in the earlier seasons, he oversteps her boundaries. She literally told him she didn't care about the photographer, she didn't care how people perceived her by this tabloid. Yet here he goes and pulls out the guy's eye in the name of "justice". Now tell me, would you go and hurt someone who hurt someone else you're infatuated by under the name of "justice"? Probably not (I would hope not anyways 😭). What really gets me is how he did this for Persephone, but you would have never seen him do this for Minthe despite the fact that THEY WERE DATING!!
Not only does he overstep a boundary there, but during the trial he asks Persephone about Apollo, and how he assaulted her. Persephone dodges the question as she is already completely overwhelmed by the trial, but screw that Hades just has to know!!! After a guilty feeling Persephone gives him an answer, he (almost) makes the same stupid mistake again, hurting someone who hurt her under the name of "justice". You would think after talking this issue out with her the first time he would've learned his lesson but no 💀 the mummified blueberry has to have his way. (I am in no way defending Apollo in this situation but Jesus, Hades needs to fucking chill 😭).
As mentioned earlier, Hades would never do these things for Minthe. He would have never gone and killed someone for Minthe. For someone who's his supposed girlfriend, he really does not give two shits about her. Speaking of which...
Tumblr media
He has cheated on Minthe multiple times with Persephone with all the flirting behind her back when they were still together. All for someone he JUST MET a little after he was supposed to propose to Minthe. He was going to make Minthe his wife and drops it all for someone he just met. I'm aware he was settling when dating Minthe, but dude, dropping a huge commitment in the name of "love at first sight" is so messy. It makes you think if he really even loves the women he's dated the way he says he does 🤦🏽‍♀️.
Hades is a selfish, sloppy, perverted man when it comes to Persephone. His "love" for her is all just lust and infatuation. He fell for her so fast, and he never stopped to think if he really loves her the way he says he does. It truly shows how messy their relationship is, and how messy he is of a lover to her.
Also PSA, falling in love fast is not a bad thing, just really think about it first, get in touch with your emotions before pulling a Hades. ✌🏽

What’s crazy to me, he’s threatening the person who’s protecting Persephone’s identity from a stranger.
She doesn’t know Hades has “good intentions”. Just that Persephone is running from SOMEONE and now there’s an angry man looking for her.
Imagine if this was Apollo at her shop demanding to know if Persephone sold this stuff. Everyone would hate the merchant for betraying Hades UwU future queen. But when Hades does it it’s ok?

SPOILERS FOR LORE OLYMPUS EPISODE 280, THE FINALE.
*

Yeah so I just spent the last two days obsessively working on this.
I've been telling people for years that Rachel mixed up being infertile with being sterile. And now with the birth of Makaria I was accidentally proven right.
If you want to read it for yourself instead of on here, the link to the full google slides presentation is below.

TRIGGER WARNING ⚠️
Mention of SA || Lore Olympus Episode 277 (and 275)
It’s fucking sick how this comic handles confronting your abuser
Tumblr media
No, you don’t have to forgive your abuser.
Fuck that.
And the recent free episode…
Tumblr media
I’m appalled that the vulnerable minority of the comic (nymphs, satyrs) suffered more severe punishments. Like Minthe trapped as a sentient plant for years and Tori getting his eye torn out.
But a literal rapist? His punishment is… to love Persephone more? I thought Apollo was already obsessively in love with her?
Like yeah he has to live with “guilt,” but that doesn’t change the fact that he is an abuser who will prey on anyone else. He basically got away without consequences. 🤬
People handle assault differently, but this is a wrathful goddess who slaughtered an entire village and terrorized nymphs that did way less to her. The way she “punished” Apollo didn’t fit her character.

GOOD RIDDANCE LORE OLYMPUS 🖕
Not defending Leto, but pulling the veil of a woman of modesty is NOT FEMINISM!
Demonizing a complex character who was rightfully angry is NOT FEMINISM!
Terrorizing the working class is NOT FEMINISM!
Fetishizing your female protagonist for her childlike features is NOT FEMINISM!
Portraying a grieving mother as an evil helicopter mom is NOT FEMINISM!
Putting women down to lift your self-insert up is NOT FEMINISM!
Objectifying women is NOT FEMINISM!
Body shaming and slut shaming is NOT FEMINISM!
SPOILERS AHEAD AND POSSIBLE TW! More ranting…
Another point I want to make is how this comic coddles evil men but harshly punishes women who do not deserve it.
Kronos, a child abuser, was given a sad backstory (boohoo 🙄) and Hades forgave him.
Apollo, a literal rapist, got away with community service.
Hades, who enslaved human souls and targeted vulnerable younger women, was never held accountable. Not surprised there.
But the thousands of humans Persephone murdered, including women and children? Have to pay coins for an eternity of slavery.
Leuce? Her home was broken into, and her life was threatened.
Minthe? “I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream” type punishment. She was turned into a sentient plant for reporting a crime and having a mental breakdown at the wrong place, wrong time.
Seriously. Good riddance Lore Olympus.
