Performance terms

Some Terms pertaining to performance from Martin Fowler that i beleive everyone ( both tech savvy and non tech savvy )should know

1. Response Time - The amount of time is takes for a  system | resource to process a request  from the outside.

2. Responsiveness - How quickly a system acknowledges a request  as opposed to processing it  e.g  Providing a progress bar during a file copy  improves the responsiveness of your user interface,  even though it doesn't improve response time.

3. Latency - Minimum time required to get any form of response, even if the work to be done is nonexistent ( you told the system to do nothing ).

4. Throughput - How much stuff you can do in a given amount if time.

5. Load - How much stress a system is under.

6. Load Sensitivity - How a performance measure ( such as reponse time ) varies with load. e.g lets say sys A has a response time of 0.2 seconds for 10 - 20 users and sys B as a response time of 0.2 seconds for 10 users that rises to 2 seconds for 20 users. In this case, sys A has a lower load sensitivty than sys B or B degrades more than A.

7. Effeciency - Performance divided by resources e.g A system that gets 30tps ( transactions per second ) on 2 CPU's is more effecient that a system that gets 40tps on 4 identical CPU's.

8. Scalability - How adding resources ( usually hardware ) affects performance.

a scalable system is one in which adding resources ( such as hardware ) gives you a commensurate performance improvement

Might end up making this some sort of tech blog

Yeah, I might end up blogging about my tech experiences on here. Since that’s what i do most of my time ( about 18 out of 24 hours in a day )

Why not? Express my opinion about a person or technology and maybe read this 5 years from today and tell you ( my future self ) that life totally sucks right now.

You’re living with your cousins, company isn’t making money, ex-fuck buddy demands you 400k  and you haven’t had a haircut in 2 weeks.

Coupled with that, you need to get money for that damn masters and passport dimwit. Your sister’s having her wedding ceremony in Minnesota in July, and you haven’t got a passport!.. let alone the visa.

uhhh!

Meanwhile, it’s 8pm sunday and you have to explain to vanessa tomorrow at 10am how far you are with erandboys ( all you’ve done is put a map and 3 screens with some animation, using fuse.. big deal. ). Think you can handle an all nighter at 26 like you could at 20?.. quick answer.. no.

Well, since you’re the only that i feel can sort of relate to my situation, imma start addressing you from now on.

Same App, Different ports

You know, i promised i wouldn’t make this a tech blog. But i really want to write what’s exciting to me, and this is.

So this node app i’ve built has a function that runs once every hour to fetch data from one external system and update ours.

Now, i’m updating to add another function that runs every minute to update another external system and was faced with the question of whether this won’t overload the other function.

Solution, run the same app on different ports and send calls for function 1 in one port and function 2 on the other port. Since they are different processes, one crashing won’t affect the other.

Today i was doing my usual rounds of crawling twitter and trying to download a video from this status( I found it funny ). only to open the network tab and see this when i filter only media requests

So i’m like huh?.. it’s saying no media and yet there’s a video right there, playing.

Well, this is when i think it’s one of 2 things:

1. It’s using some sand-boxed environment like adobe flash or java applets. Doubt that, html5 is the cool kid on the block.

2. It’s chunked the video stream and is making separate requests for parts of the video.( but why wouldn’t those requests show up on the network tab under media? )

Anyway, if i doubt 1), then onward to the console tab and see what requests this baby is making while the video is playing.

video.twimg.com sounds like something related to video, and it’s making mulitple similar looking GET requests. But the fuck is a .ts?

let’s see what inspecting one of those requests tells us about the Content-Type

video/mp2t. mp2t. hmmmm..... Well it’s a video file alright. and it’s chunking the video stream. but.

Bingo. An HDTV sample file. Basically a stream part for HDTV transmission.

Well, I’m about to take on a project that will see me making a mini youtube. Might as well learn how to do video properly.

Watching an anime called Nana.

And wondering what to write about on my blog( Is that a thing? writing that you’re thinking about writing? )

Well, i don’t really have anything to say. I’m not a writer. I’m a thinker.

I’m not a great thinker. Just that i actually contemplate multiple angles, approaches and possibilities that can apply to a particular scenario.I have to, if don’t want to spend 3 weeks debugging some cryptic error in an application.

Well that’s it. If i find myself writing about tech, I’ll take that as my queue to sign out.

7:10 pm and i have to integrate( connect ) my script with ken’s dashboard. which basically means setup my script to insert records into a table of his choice and populate the fields of his choosing

I also have to build the continuous integration( CI ) pipeline for nodejs, after building one for php and python.. uhhhhhh!

Let’s wait and see how this goes.

Work Software Engineer? Graphics Designer? 3d Animator? Musician?,Guitarist? Otaku? Rapper? Writer?, Novelist

You know, I’ve tried to be all these things. no. I’ve been every one of these things.

Still a software engineer, it’s what puts food on the table ( and my housemates turned landlords at bay.. living with cousins ain’t something i’d recommend )

So i opened a tumblr account under a pseudo-name mainly to store some interesting situations i encounter during my work and use it as a point of reference. also to rant.

I’m hoping to improve my poor writing, memory, narration and all that go in between… and ofcourse complain about life, which at 26 and in a 3rd world country.. just means whining about how broke I am.
