3) Kettcar - Ich vs. Wir

German bands were always difficult for me. I had little expectations when I first listened to the new Kettcar record and it really struck me. The first four songs gave me goosebumps while riding the dirty trains in Cologne, and this is not an easy task. I like how Marcus Wiebusch connects the humanity to political issues and makes them more relatable, seizable than any column in a paper. 

Best songs: Ankunftshalle, Wagenburg, Sommer ‘89 (Er schnitt Löcher in den Zaun)

2) The Smith Street Band - More Scared of You than You Are of Me

I first heard this Australian band in a Cambodian beach pub, ran by British students. Then I saw them live in Chicago and, oh boy, were they great. This is what raw, honest punkrock should sound like in 2017.

1) Enter Shikari - The Spark

This is not only my album of the year, but also a re-discovery of a band long forgotten. I first heard Enter Shikari in 2007 as a preperation for my first festival ever, Groezrock in Belgium, and for five seconds, I thought that trancecore was exactly the thing I was looking for all the time. Just like ska in 2000. But three claps later, I was not so sure. I never really listened to them again.

This year, a friend of mine twittered “Live Outside by Enter Shikari, actually not that bad”. I had to listen at least once to this. What the hell, this is a cheesy pop song and the singer can sing? Exactly what I want nowadays. The songs are cleverly written, not just simple pop songs, but also complex 4-6 minute ones with substance. Rou sings so good, it is even a big step compared to their 2015 output “The Mindsweep”. The album is on constant rotation since October 2017 and it has not changed since.

Deer Leap - Wind & Words

EP were not that popular in 2017, weren’t they? I counted two EPs, that got my attention. Deer Leap is one of my favourite emo bands, mixing 90′s emo with instrumental Post-Rock. Seriously one of the most underrated bands, even my band could open up for them.

City Light Thief - Death Trip

Let’s list the hell out of 2017!

Best 7 inch is easy, City Light Thief punches you in the face with one of their most agressive and honest outputs ever. This is not bandcontest-in-youth-centre-hardness, these are Touché Amoré like screams until you become really concerned for this band’s state of mind. This record is so important, it shows the ongoing struggle between the motivation you had ten years ago and the responsibilities you have now. I hope I will hear a lot more of CLT in the next years.

Stu, let me ask you a question: how did you not realize until then that you had too many eggs? Nobody sells eggs in a big cloth-covered basket, so you must have done that yourself. That means you spent god-knows-how-long opening up twelve whole cartons of eggs, carefully placing each egg one-by-one inside a big basket, and then covering it with a big picnic cloth… and at no point- at no point- did you ever stop and think “gee, there might be TOO MANY FUCKING EGGS HERE”

You really have lost control of your life.
