Here’s the thing: asexuality and desexualization are two very different things. 

Asexuality is a sexual orientation and identity. It’s a part of who someone is. 

Desexualization is the process of removing or ignoring sexuality. It’s often part of stereotypes.

Example of desexualization: forcing disabled characters into chaste maternal roles while abled characters get to have fully realized sexual/romantic lives.

Not an example of desexualization: writing a disabled character who is also asexual. 

Desexualization is a huge problem with representations of disabled people, neurodivergent people, people of color, fat people, and other groups. 

Writing people from those groups as asexual is not a problem, nor is it desexualization. Those are two different issues. 

Headcanoning an asexual character as a member of those groups is not a problem, and is also not desexualization. People can be fat, neurodivergent, disabled, non-white, and ace at the same time. Asexuals, people of color, fat people, ND people, and disabled folks all deserve to see themselves in fiction without being told their existence is problematic or a stereotype.

The thing I hate most about depression is that it tricks you into thinking you don’t have depression. It makes you think that nothing is wrong with you, that you just feel this way because you lack value as a person. Whether that’s in your relationships, your academics, or a view of yourself, it makes you think you aren’t good enough for any of that.
