This video resonates with me so much. I saw the thumbs down vs. thumbs up and I have to wonder why so much negativity. What I got out of this video, is that women of color, specifically black women feel the anxiety and underlying hatred associated with the history of the United States as well as the current presidential administration. The blatant racism that has been exposed within the last two years is undeniable, as well as the anti-black racism that has influenced other westernized minorities as well. I personally found this video healing and informative. As someone who yearns for a life outside of the United States, this speaks to me on a deep level. I fantasize about starting over in a place where I don't have the expectation to be ‘lesser than’ my white counterparts. That is the fabric of America and I am awake to see this country for what it is, and it is not positive. I do not imagine or perceive the United States as the ideal place to live because this country was not created for people like me to thrive. Sure, the ‘American Dream’ should be a goal for most Americans, but this is a falsehood because no matter how much effort and work is put into achieving that ‘dream’, doors are not easily opened for black people, and white supremacy and racism is still in effect in addition to the residual effects of slavery that plague the minds within the African diaspora. White supremacy is globalized, but there are ways outside of the United States where healing and preservation of culture are attainable. I would love to live in a place that does not place my skin color at the bottom when there are many advantages of melanin. I want to live in a place where my darker complexion isn’t demonized because of a desire for the ideal westernized European beauty standard. I do not want to feel the pressure of straightening my hair in order to succeed in relationships and career opportunities. I want to love myself and my blackness and not be shunned for it or for people of my peers to be threatened by it. To me, black American women need a safe space outside of the United States because for so long, these European standards have not allowed black women to be feminine, or real women. Every negative stereotype against women is associated with black women (loud and angry sapphire, asexual yet loyal Mammie, oversexed hypersexed Jezebel) and the judgment is instant, whether another has ever been around us or not. I am all for this distancing and retreat because healing needs to happen in a place that does not rely on European standards, or heavily influenced by European standards because although African decent people and European decent people are not the same species, our experiences couldn’t be more opposite.

I believe that art comes in many forms and is always open to interpretation. Art is not “matter-of-fact”. Art is a mirror. It reveals to the experiencer a piece of who they are whether this is conscious or subconscious, realized, and observed.

In the beginning, home was the land, air, and water...so legends are told
For in of the origin of soul encased within, the truth to behold
