WhatsApp on Friday announced that it has postponed its planned privacy update, which will give users more time to review the policy and accept the terms of the Facebook-owned messaging app.
The decision to postpone the privacy update has been taken due to "misinformation causing concern" among people, the company said.
"We're now moving back the date on which people will be asked to review and accept the terms. No one will have their account suspended or deleted on February 8. We're also going to do a lot more to clear up the misinformation around how privacy and security works on WhatsApp. We'll then go to people gradually to review the policy at their own pace before new business options are available on May 15," the blog post read.
The New York Times reported that since the announcement of the privacy update many users and some media outlets interpreted the notification as a marked shift in WhatsApp's data-sharing practices, mistakenly believing that the company could now read people's conversations and other personal data.
The concerns resulted in people switching to other
messaging services such as Signal and Telegram. This week, Signal became the No. 1 app in India, one of WhatsApp's biggest markets, on Apple and Android phones, the NYT said.
Reassuring people on these concerns, the company said, "the update includes new options people will have to message a business on WhatsApp, and provides further transparency about how we collect and use data. While not everyone shops with a business on WhatsApp today, we think that more people will choose to do so in the future and it's important people are aware of these services. This update does not expand our ability to share data with Facebook."

A 26-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide after consuming 'sindoor' (vermilion) when her husband refused to take her along to Surat where he worked, police said. Station officer (SO) of Suryava police station, Pradeep Kumar, said.
"Vikas Bind, a resident of Danpur village, married Saraswati Devi three years ago. Vikas used to work in Surat district of Gujarat and had come home during the lockdown. Four days ago, he left for Surat. Saraswati wanted to accompany her husband, but Vikas insisted that she stayed at home and looked after their two-and-half-year-old child," said Kumar.
The SO said Saraswati consumed 'sindoor' after Vikas left for Surat, but it was not clear how much of the substance she had consumed.
"As Saraswati's condition deteriorated, she was admitted to a hospital where she died on Wednesday," the police officer said. 'Sindoor' contains lead or mercury compounds and can be toxic.
Meanwhile, the body has been sent for post-mortem examination and the matter was under investigation, police said.

The merit of a democratic country is often given based on the freedom of speech and expression and that is what makes “media” the fourth pillar of democracy. However, looks like the credibility of India Media is put to question as it has evolved over the years, seemingly for worse.

The racket came to light after a woman, a resident of Ghatkopar east, approached the police on September 9 and lodged a complaint, he said.
In her complaint, the woman alleged that she lost at least Rs 8.16 lakh after a caller duped her by posing as an executive of a prominent job portal, the official said.
The complainant said she had posted her resume on the the job portal through its app. She later received a call from a person, who said he was calling on behalf of that 'placement service' company, he said.
"Through the calls, the caller gained the woman's confidence and obtained details of her bank account, debit card and one time password (OTP) and withdrew at least Rs 8.16 lakh from her account," the official said.
After losing money between August 31 and September 3, the complainant approached the Pant Nagar Police Station.
An offence was registrered under IPC sections 419 and 420, as well as the IT Act against unidentified persons.
During the investigation police got information related to the caller's mobile number, he said.
With the help of technical details, the police team raided the fake call centre in Delhi and arrested five persons identified as Aashique Iqbal Narul Hasan (27), Rahul Tilakraj (21), Ravi Hokla (24), Devesh Kumar Singh (23) and Aditya Kumar Singh (31), the official added.
Police recovered eight hard disks, 23 mobile phones, 47 SIM Cards, 12 debit cards, 11 PayTm cards and cash of Rs 1.74 lakh from the accused, he said, adding that a probe is on.
