“Poor morals can be fixed and changed, Josh. It’s the desire to be good that can’t really be taught. That’s why I am helping you - true monsters wouldn’t have that desire. True monsters wouldn’t have the strength to last as long as you did in there without succumbing to those urges. Warden told me you were bitin’ people, even. But never actually took a proper bite.” Shadow hummed, almost as if he’d read the kid’s mind - though it was more his body language he’d read and assumed the rest from context.
Josh settled on the floor of the van just behind him and he reached a hand back to gently pat the kid’s shoulder. “Of course.” Shadow said softly, quieting for a moment before speaking again. “I was created by the Russian Government. They used DNA from their top operatives in the hopes of making a superior weapon. They did their job a bit too well and I broke out the moment I had a chance to. One of their scientists was an occultist and knew some hunters. He trained me how to fight supernatural creatures, so I decided to do what I knew. Most hunters aren’t my biggest fan, though - because I do this. They’re typically a shoot first, ask questions later kinda group.”
“I don’t want to be a monster..” He muttered softly, leaning into the brief touch he’s given. “It’s hard, there’s voices constantly, a craving.. but then I remember Hannah and what she became, what she had to do. I don’t want to be like that. No matter how hungry I get.”
He looked down at his own hands, his skin’s a little rougher and tougher than it used to be as are his nails and teeth. But he’s still very much human-looking in all aspects. “I’m glad you’re the one that he called then. I’d rather not be burned alive, though I’m sure it would be a great disco inferno.”
He chuckled, sobering up a bit after. “Though I’m sorry, for everything you went through. You didn’t deserve that either.”
Sam stared at him from his right, her blonde hair framing her face as she glanced at him from under her lashes. “That’s the best you can do, Josh? You can do better, you always do when trying to cheer someone up.”
“I’m trying, okay? It’s not like I can tell knock-knock jokes-” He sighed softly as she simply smiled at him.
“You got this, Josh.”
“Yeah, sure I do.” He ran a hand through his short hair and looked over his shoulder with a soft smile. “Sounds like a plan or a bad joke, an unturned Wendigo and a former Russian operative break out of prison to sleep in a night in a motel- it’s like the start of any epic adventure story.”

He considered Shadow's question, biting his lip as he recalled the events on blackwood mountain. "I didn't kill anybody.." he said very quietly.
He tucked his knees to his chest and rested his chin on top of them. "I tortured Ashley and Chris, made them think they were going to die but I didn't kill them. I didn't kill anybody. I just terrorized Sam and did horrible things to my friends. But I didn't kill anyone, I didn't kill anybody-"
It was the one consolation he had really. He rocked himself and hugged his knees. Shadow's words settling in his mind. Shadow had killed thousands by his own account and yet here he was helping Josh. Which proved to him that even killers could be good people and that not having killed anyone was not a good morality meter. He'd have to try to be better.
"Hey bo- eh, dude? Thank you, for everything." He quietly curled up on himself and settled on the floor of the van, at the back of the driver's seat just behind Shadow. A sign of trust and respect, for him at least. "I- you said you escaped? Escaped from what?"
thedisasterboys:
He stared in awe at the complete change the older man went through in a matter of seconds. Smiling brightly at how insanely cool that actually was. Imagine the things he could do if he learned something like that. “Okay. You have to teach me how to do that.”
So he didn’t protest when the Shadow told him to get in the back and get changed. Even though he could very well be driven to his death right about now, he didn’t care.
“Sure, whatever you say, boss.” He simply got in, changed out of the prison uniform and into the selection of simple clothes he’d been given. Just some jeans, a dark grey beanie, a blue and white plaid flannel shirt with a black shirt underneath and a black bodywarmer. Which worked for him, really.
He’d gotten changed when he saw the vague outlines of Hannah and Beth on the other side of the van, though by now his meds had kicked in and he merely sighed. “Would you just shut up? God, Hannah I wish you would just shut up.”
He couldn’t take this, it made him fidgety and itching for conflict in any kind of way. “Hey boss? Where are you taking me? Why are you helping me? Shouldn’t you be setting me on fire by now? I mean, I ain’t human anymore and I’m- insane to boot. What a freaking combo..”
He laughed softly and nodded. “Oh, I will. You’re gonna need to learn it if you’re staying with me.” Shadow flipped his curls away from his shoulder and stretched a bit before getting into the car and starting to drive after firing off a coded text to the Warden from a burner phone. It was made to look like a spam message but the Warden would know it meant they were in the clear.
Josh got changed and spoke up, likely talking to one of his sisters he was seeing. The question was a bit of whiplash, but Shadow took it in stride. “I’m taking you to a motel where we’re gonna spend the night before getting on the road. I’m helping you because you deserve a chance, Josh. Also I’m not your boss- call me Shadow, or Shane if you want something less abstract.” He chuckled lightly. “As for why I’m not setting you on fire - how many people have you killed, Josh? Because as far as humans go at least, my kill count is in the thousands due to the way I was raised and what I was forced to do before I escaped.” He glanced at the kid in the rear view.
“I kill monsters, Josh. Monsters aren’t limited solely to the supernatural, and you’re not a monster. You’re a kid who got dealt a shitty hand in life and who made some pretty big mistakes and dealt with things very poorly.” He hummed. “If you ask me, that shouldn’t earn you a death sentence. And letting you stay in that prison where you’re not gettin’ the help you actually need for what’s happening to you - that’s worse than death in my opinion. Th’Warden called me in because he knows I help supernaturals who want to try to live a better life, actually do it. I helped him a year or so ago when a vampire got into the prison and was killin’ people.”
That had been interesting, seeing as he’d infiltrated the prison as a prisoner.

“Just ‘cause your mind works differently doesn’t mean it ain’t right, Josh. Just means you have different things you gotta deal with than most.” Shadow said gently. “We’ll get you on your meds and it’ll get better, okay?” He had enough practice to be able to help Josh in that regard as well.
Getting the cuffs on the kid, Shadow took on the guard persona, walking the “prisoner” out towards the exit. The warden had made sure everything would go smoothly, of course. What Josh was saying made little sense to the hunter, but he wasn’t about to blow their cover by openly chatting about things in a way a guard wouldn’t.
Once they got to the car he’d stolen to transport Josh in, he took the cuffs off the kid with a chuckle. “Thank you for cooperating considering you coulda probably broken out of those.” Taking off his button down, he ditched the guard button down and the hat in the trash, taking his long hair down from the sock bun he’d had it in. Taking a makeup wipe to the makeup he’d had covering his tattoos, he tossed those in the trash as well and instantly looked like a completely different person in a matter of minutes.
Pulling a bag out of the trunk, he handed it to Josh. “I’m gonna start driving, you get in the back and change out of your prison uniform, ok?”
He stared in awe at the complete change the older man went through in a matter of seconds. Smiling brightly at how insanely cool that actually was. Imagine the things he could do if he learned something like that. “Okay. You have to teach me how to do that.”

Shadow smiled gently and stood. Good, the kid was willing to come with him. “I do. Mine are caused mostly by post traumatic stress. I’ll usually just touch things around me to remind myself what is real - it helps, at least for what I’m dealin’ with. Meds don’t really work on me, unfortunately.” He could hear the fight and figured it was the blood that was getting to Josh.
“Focus on me, kid. And yeah, if they’re open to it - eventually I’ll take you to em.” He promised. “I’m gonna have t’put handcuffs on you t’make it look real, okay? But I’ll take them off of you once we’re in the clear.” Shadow kept that gentle smile, taking out his handcuffs. “Just hang in there with me ‘till then, okay?”
Oh, he knew he was going to stick by this kid already. He had an affection for him he wasn’t entirely used to, Shadow definitely wanted to see Josh get better, see him succeed.
He stared at the handcuffs for a moment or two. He could easily break out of any human-made handcuffs, he knew that. Wouldn’t be any trouble at all. Still, he made himself fidget, a look of uncertainty passing over him before he finally nodded.
Holding out his arms he waited until Shadow had slapped the cuffs on him and then diligently walked with him. “Oh- I’m sorry. For me- My mind’s not right. Hasn’t been since I was eleven but after-” He let out a shaky breath “It got worse.”
They wouldn’t want to see him. Sam might, Chris wouldn’t. Not after what he’d done to them. But a part of him wanted to hope, he wanted to dream. So he merely hung his head and slowly stepped forward.
Stomach grumbling as he slowly walked through the halls, he kept his gaze fixated on the ceiling. Trying not to snarl back at a fading Hannah who was dragging Beth’s body behind her. How she did it while traversing the ceiling, he didn’t know. But then again, hallucinations didn’t have to make sense.
He let out a soft laugh. “‘We each owe a death, there are no exceptions, I know that, but sometimes, oh God, the Green Mile is so long.”

He quickly took the offered bag and water bottle, snatching them from the ground he downed two little pills quickly and washed them down with the water. He stowed the two little pill bottles in his shoes for safe keeping.
He didn't trust Shadow, though he also recognized that the hunter was probably his best shot at a normal life right now. So he nodded quietly and gathered himself off the floor. "Okay."
He cocked his head to the left, nostrils flaring as the smell of human blood hit him again. Some of the guys were in another fight in the courtyard.. and he could smell them- dear god could he smell them-
He twitched violently, ignoring the screeches of Hannah next to him as best as he could. "You- you said; hallucinations are a bitch? You have them too."
It wasn't a question as much as it was a statement. Because that little sentence brought him great comfort. He wasn't alone. "I'll get to see Sam and Chris again, eventually?"
If they ever wanted to see him again that was. He wouldn't blame them if they didn't. He slowly took a step towards Shadow and nodded. "Let's go."
thedisasterboys:
He was shaking, eyes wide as he stared at something next to shadow. It was Hannah and Beth, Hannah as a wendigo and she was ripping shreds of flesh from Beth’s decomposing corpse. He couldn’t hold back the sobs as he was forced to sit through his hallucination. That was what he would become too. He’d succumb like Hannah.
He finally focused back on the older man, the guard- no the hunter- and sniffled softly. “They’re ancient native American spirits who protect nature. They posses people and when the possessed people succumb to cannibalism, they turn into monsters who eat human flesh and can only see movement. Least, that’s what Sam told me. She also said my bite wouldn’t hurt anyone, I’m not infectious, I just shouldn’t eat anyone and I’d be fine. She’d come get me when I’m eligible for parole..”
He looked down at his own feet and placed his hands over his ears as Hannah let out an inhuman screech. “I want- I want my meds. I can’t take this.. I don’t want to see them.”
Shadow nodded with a gentle, empathetic smile and slid a baggie over to him, then rolling a water bottle over to him as well. “The warden gave me your meds. I’ve got em all with me. Hallucinations can be a bitch, huh?” He smiled sadly at that. “You’re right, though. And I’m gonna help you stay that way, Josh. You just gotta come with me, though.” He’d wait for Josh to take his meds before making any movements to leave - wanting to give the poor kid a breather.
“It’s gonna be okay. Just take a breath, take your meds, and we’ll get outta here no problem. I’m gonna help you, Josh.” He promised, resting his elbows on his bent knees. Shadow certainly didn’t envy what he was going through, but he’d do his best to make sure he had the best chance to be okay. “You’re gonna live with me for awhile, at least until you’re back on your feet and stable.”

Five inmates bitten, ten isolation cell doors and twelve cells destroyed. This wasn’t a run of the mills kinda guy they were keeping here. Warden Mills realized that relatively quickly after Joshua Washington arrived at Washington State Penitentiary. The young man was far stronger than anyone he’s ever had in his prison and he barely looked strong enough to keep his own body upright in the condition he was in. Red flags had gone off immediately. Not just by the way he acted, cause he was off his rockers on a good day, but everything screamed danger.
His most dangerous inmates were terrified of Josh. And that was saying something. There were also the biting incidents, five inmates bitten but thankfully they had been just puncture wounds. No major arteries had been hit, no one had had to go into an actual hospital. No stitched had been required.
Still, he strongly suspected that Josh wasn’t a human, not fully and for that he’d called in a favor from an old acquaintance. He called in Shadow.
-
Josh was sitting alone in the hallway, he’d broken out of the isolation cell again. Hallucinations and visions plagued him and this hunger- this never-ending hunger that kept screaming at him. He wanted it all to end, he wanted everything to be over. He wanted to stop hearing his dead sisters, wanted to stop seeing them. Maybe he should be taking his meds, the one Warden Mills tried to give him. But he couldn’t get close to anyone without feeling like he wanted to eat them.
“You should stay away from me!”

He laughed with a softness that Dean had yet to see - a genuine smile crossing his features as Charles complimented his name. It was more a callsign and one he mostly just used out of habit, but - he liked the old man and he made him laugh. That was in short supply for Shadow most days. “Oh, well - Mystery does happen to be my middle name, so that works out.” He teased gently, falling quiet as the other hunter very clearly gave the old man some medicine.
Well, it would seem that Dean Winchester was capable of kindness for non-humans after all. Color Shadow surprised. His focus went to the old man again as he went to get up, providing a sturdy support for Charles so he could do that. Prepared to politely decline the invitation - social things weren’t really his forte - he looked up at Dean as he spoke and exhaled a very soft sigh. Fuck all if he knew what to do at things like family gatherings, he’d never even had a family. Just handlers and pain.
But, he wasn’t wrong, Charles seemed like the type that would get offended if he declined. “Alright.” He conceded, a subtle clench of his jaw as he braced himself for the anxiety that was starting to creep in along his spine and into his stomach. This wasn’t a mission and he had to be himself, which was - uh - not the best thing, in Shadow’s opinion. He hadn’t been raised to be a normal social human being, after all. “I’m guessing you parked near my bike, Winchester?” The last thing Shadow wanted to do was put the old man on the back of his motorcycle, so hopefully Dean was close and could put him in that car of his.
“Shadow Mystery-” Charles muttered as he wobbled his way to a dark 1967 Chevy Impala that was parked near Shadow’s bike. “What a lovely name for a lovely young man.”
The old man turned towards the two hunters once he was halfway to the car and scoffed at the way they dilly dadelled. “You two pups better be comin’, you hear?”
“Coming Charles!” Dean answered automatically, he was used to Charles’s impatience by now. He’d driven him around a few times before this and knew what he could expect from the old wolf.
“You bet I did. Right next to her.” He pointed to the Impala, “Better get going before Charles blows up the freaking vehicles with his impatience. You don’t wanna keep him waiting, he’ll chew the leather seats.”
He wasn’t joking about that either. He couldn’t help but think back on Shadow’s smile though, the softness in those eyes as he looked at Charles. He shook his head to clear those thoughts and quickly let Charles into the car before he did destroy something. “You follow me there, I’ll introduce you.”
