Sprinkle Donut & Dewey, mix & Poodle/Siberian Husky mix (2.5 & 5 y/o),  McCarren Park, Brooklyn, NY • “Sprinkles was brought in as a stray – she was super pregnant. We were just fostering her, and then we really bonded. We call her Miss Donut, Sprinkles… if she’s in trouble, then it’s the full name. Our last dog was Gucci Mane – I never thought I was gonna get another dog again after him. I had him from 13 to 28. Dewey is very opinionated – he’ll yell at you if you don’t walk him at the exact time he wants to be walked. Sprinkles just got re-spayed – she got spayed in Texas, and they missed one part of one of her ovaries, so she started going through heat again and was super hormonal.” @miss_sprinkledonut, a rescue via @heartsandbonesrescues

Wilson, mix (9 m/o), McCarren Park, Brooklyn, NY • “We got him from a shelter – he’s from Tennessee. He has mostly Mountain Cur, as well as some Great Pyrenees, German Shepherd, and Saint Bernard. He’s an angel at home, and then is crazy in the real world. He loves howling at firetrucks – he thinks he’s a firetruck. He loves every person and dog a little bit too much. He’s a regular at a handful of bars around here. He’s literally perfect when I work from home – he sleeps by my toes and keeps them warm. He has a brother named Winger – if anyone knows Winger out there, we’d love to meet him.”

Daisy, Sato mix (5 y/o), N 14th & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY • “She’s not the most friendly dog – she barks a lot. I’m Puerto Rican, so I adopted her back home. I’ve always had dogs, but when I lived here for college, I didn’t have a dog. I saw her online, and I was like, I really want a dog. She’s from a shelter in Guaynabo. She’s a little bit anxious, but she’s very sweet. I swear she has nine lives – she jumped from my roof back home and split open her leg, and she was fine. She’s very loving, it just takes her maybe a month to warm up to people. My mom named her – she saw her face, and said she looks like a Daisy.”

Kaya, Boonie mix, McCarren Park, Brooklyn, NY • “She’s from Saipan. I think there’s almost the same amount of dogs as there are people at this point, because there’s not a vet on the island, so there’s no spay/neuter. Boonies are descendants of World War II dogs, so they’re all these really impressive breeds that have intermingled. They’re all incredibly agile, because they run up cliffs and through jungles. We would take her to the beach with five other dogs and let them off leash, and they would just dart into the jungle. It was so pure. You can sense her appreciation for getting her into a better life. The founders of @booniebabies are the most impressive girls I’ve ever met. They’re rewriting laws and legislation, they’re trying to infiltrate their schools to re-educate the students about it. They’re amazing.” A rescue via @booniebabies

Beck, Scottish Terrier, Berry & Grand St., Brooklyn, NY• “He doesn’t like to walk. He lives with a cat – they get along, but the cat’s in charge. He chases squirrels, but rats will run by, and he’s like, whatever. I’m like, dude, that’s what you’re supposed to do. He’s changed my life for the better. When we’re inside, he’s very nice, but when we’re outside, he makes me fight with him, so he’s taught me patience. I love him, though. He’s a good boy.”

Benjamin & Tim, Cocker Spaniel & mix (1.5 & 10 y/o), S 3rd & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY • “I’ve had Tim since 2015 – I found him when I was a senior in college. He was a little street dog in Coral Gables, and he’s named after Tim Riggins in Friday Night Lights. Benjamin is named Benjamin ‘cause my brother has his brother, whose name is Franklin. Tim is excellent at obedience, but Benjamin is still a little puppy. Anytime an ambulance passes, Benjamin automatically starts howling. His brother does the exact same thing, and they’ll match the pitch. Tim used to be scared of literally everything, and now he’s actually the best dog. He really helped fast forward some maturity, and Benjamin really reminded me how hard it is to have a puppy.”

ADOPTABLE: Fred, mix (4 y/o), McCarren Park, Brooklyn, NY • “We don’t know much about his history. He seems to favor women a little bit, so maybe there’s something there with men – not to say that he can’t bond. He’s open-minded. He’s very quirky – he buries his treats and bones around, and takes it very seriously. His ideal home would probably have a woman in it, and I think he would prefer to be the only child, two-legged or four-legged. But I really think he would be happy anywhere. He’s 100% house trained and crate trained, and sleeps through the night. He’s great being left alone – I work in person every day, and there’s issues. He takes maybe an ounce of patience in the very beginning, and then he’ll give it back to you tenfold.”
Fred is adoptable now via @heartsandbonesrescue!

Ernest, mix (8 y/o), McCarren Park, Brooklyn, NY • “You took a picture of him and his brother, Oscar, who died. I was told he’s Shih Tzu/Puggle, but it turns out he’s half Chihuahua, also. Oscar and Ernest were besties. I’d told you I always thought of them as brothers, but by their physical affection, sometimes I didn’t know if they thought of each other as lovers. Oscar was almost 18, so he was old, but super healthy until the very end. They were probably the sole reason I left my apartment during COVID. A lot of emotional support.”

Lucy, mix (4 y/o), S 3rd & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY  • “Over COVID, I got into fostering – she was supposed to be my fifth foster. I didn’t know anything – the organization I work with handed me a six week old puppy who had just been left there. She had been left at a vet in Brooklyn super sick. She eats anything – chicken bones, pizza crust. It’s like a buffet here on Sunday mornings. We did have an incident where she got high from something off the street. She was wobbling and looked like she was seasick. The vet said they were 99% sure it was THC. She’s also a big humper – blankets, inanimate objects…” A rescue via @animalhaven

Alvin, mix (5 y/o), S 3rd & Berry St., Brooklyn, NY • “He’s Chihuahua, Beagle, Pekingese, and Corgi. He was rescued from a hoard. He was found in an abandoned car in the parking lot of a Marshall’s. He was rescued with 40 or 50 other animals that were in the car – some were dead and some were alive. We’ve been working with a behaviorist to work through his trauma. He’s come a long way – he wouldn’t even leave his crate. We’ve healed each other. He’s taught me to be more resilient, loving, open, and kind. He’s been through horrible abuses of trust, and he learned to love again.” @alvinthebean, a rescue via @ehrdogs

Leo & Joey, Golden Retriever & Chihuahua mix, S 3rd & Bedford Ave., Brooklyn, NY • “He’s gonna be nine in October, so we got her to keep his energy up. They have a very little-sister/brother relationship — she loves to torment him and wants to play with him all the time. We dog sat for one of our friends who has a Chiweenie, and we fell in love with her, so we were looking for that type. She’s 50% Chihuahua, and has Rat Terrier, and weirdly some German Shepherd in her. Leo was on Barstool Sports a couple times. I swear, if they were on a deserted island together, she would keep him alive, because sometimes she’ll bring out her treat and leave it for him.” @goldenleomac, a rescue via @truenorthrescuemission

Cooper, Golden Retriever (5 y/o), 17th & Irving Place, New York, NY • “We’re from the suburbs – this is his first time to New York City. We’re exposing him to the city because we’re moving to Nashville. He helps me get off my phone more – hiking, exploring nature. I’m a nurse, and I was working in the hospital through the pandemic. The kids were home, and he was their pet therapy. He was the bright star in that very difficult time. Kids bike to our house to see him – he’s far more popular than we are.”

Maya, Siberian Husky mix (5 y/o), E 6th & Cooper Square, New York, NY • “I’ve had dogs my whole life – I think she’s the eight or ninth. I love that dogs are authentic. I wasn’t going to get another dog, and then I had a dream that I had to get another dog. I didn’t want just a random dog, I wanted my dog. So I went to the shelters, and I went, nice dog, nice dog, nice dog… that’s my dog!” A rescue via @sthubertsanimal

Toby, mix, Astor Place, New York, NY • “I just got him today from the ACC. I’m carrying him because he had neuter surgery, and I don’t want him to rip his stitches. I had another dog before, and it was time to get another dog. My mom died two months ago today, so it’s kind of fitting. I saw him yesterday, and we built a bond. My favorite thing about dogs is their quirks. Toby’s quirk is that he likes hanging out like this.”

Opal, Siberian Husky/German Shepherd mix (3.5 y/o), W 4th & Perry St., New York, NY • “She’s amazing. She shadows humans everywhere she goes. She loves our rooftop, and loves to play fetch. She’s very athletic. She’s my first dog – I’m a dog person, but never had a dog. We fostered her and then failed after about two weeks.” A rescue via @muddypawsrescuenyc

Scout, Rough Collie (1 y/o), Main & Cross St., Belfast, ME • “We have a path behind our house – he’ll run down it and go torment our neighbor’s chickens. He’s never gotten one, though. He’s never done herding work – I’ve thought about bringing him to a field with sheep, he doesn’t know how to herd, so he’d just chase them.”
